LG Eclipse LS970 pops up in FCC docs, ready to prop up Sprint's LTE lineup

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire and by the looks of this latest FCC filing, LG’s LS970 is all but a lock for Sprint’s LTE lineup. Rumored to bow on that carrier as the Eclipse, the heavyweight handset, allegedly outfitted with a quad-core Krait processor, companion Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB RAM, has already been the subject of several leaks, leaving little of its spec load to the imagination. And now with the outing of these Commission docs, we can confirm that this uberphone does indeed pack 3G/4G radios tailored for the Hesse-led operator (CDMA 820 / 850 / 1900; LTE Band 25), as well as support for NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi a/b/g/n, GPS and SVLTE (simultaneous voice and data). While we can’t be exactly sure as to its actual screen size, that reported 4.67-inch figure does appear likely given its 5.2 x 2.8 inch (130.9 x 71.6mm) dimensions. That’s about all we were able to glean from the spate of included tests, but if you call Big Yellow your wireless home and are itching for a GS III alternative, this could be your next.

Sony Reader PRST2 up for preorder at J&R

We first caught sight of Sony’s latest reader when it mysteriously swung past the FCC, but now the PRS-T2 has arrived to spill the beans at Park Row’s most famous resident. J&R’s pre-order page reveals that the 6-inch touchscreen WiFi-only device is packing a 800 x 600 E-Ink display, a battery promising two months life and a built-in stylus. Software options include six dictionaries, Evernote Clearly, Facebook for Reader and a free copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The electronics superstore has the device listed as “coming soon,” and when it arrives, will set you back $130 — but, as its write-up notes, that’s the price you pay to avoid being bothered with adverts.

Foursquare brings nearby checkins back to BlackBerry and iPhone, will never let you miss a pub crawl again

The Foursquare 5.0 revamp wasn’t all good news for some of the location service’s most loyal fans: the design quietly scrapped the option to only see check-ins from nearby friends. After much clamoring, Foursquare has found a way to tuck it back in, starting with BlackBerry and iPhone users. A pull or a tap now filters between check-ins worldwide and just those from friends gallivanting around town — just in case you’d rather not see your international friends enjoying the weekend before you do. Android phone owners will have to take Foursquare’s word that their update is “coming soon,” but those who can get it today on other platforms will likely appreciate knowing exactly when it’s time to join friends at that fourth consecutive bar.

Ouya

If for whatever reason you didn't back Ouya's efforts on Kickstarter when it was live, no matter. Starting right now, you can head on over to the Ouya website and place your pre-order for an Ouya console and controller. Ouya has set up several options for ordering, so if you need more than one controller you can order it directly with your package. The price list looks like this –

U.S. Orders

  • 1 Console = 1 Controller = $109.99
  • 1 Console = 2 Controllers = $139.99
  • 1 Console = 4 Controllers = $199.99

International Orders

  • 1 Console = 1 Controller = $119.99
  • 1 Console = 2 Controllers = $149.99
  • 1 Console = 4 Controllers = $209.99

The pricing includes $10 for shipping in the U.S., and $20 for international shipments. The expected time of delivery is listed as being April 2013. That's still quite a wait, but if the funding was any sort of indication, you might want to get your pre-order in while you still can. Full disclosure — Android Central is one of Ouya's Kickstarter backers.

What is hard-drive clutter, and why is it bad? When people think of things that take up space in their hard drive, usually they think of the files they’ve made, including documents, pictures and media. They may also think of the programs they use to run those files. While you can delete some files or uninstall some programs, the greatest waster of hard-drive space is invisible.

MIT Media Lab's Tensor Displays stack LCDs for lowcost glassesfree 3D handson video

Glasses-free 3D may be the next logical step in TV’s evolution, but we have yet to see a convincing device make it to market that doesn’t come along with a five-figure price tag. The sets that do come within range of tickling our home theater budgets won’t blow you away, and it’s not unreasonable to expect that trend to continue through the next few product cycles. A dramatic adjustment in our approach to glasses-free 3D may be just what the industry needs, so you’ll want to pay close attention to the MIT Media Lab’s latest brew. Tensor Displays combine layered low-cost panels with some clever software that assigns and alternates the image at a rapid pace, creating depth that actually looks fairly realistic. Gordon Wetzstein, one of the project creators, explained that the solution essentially “(takes) the complexity away from the optics and (puts) it in the computation,” and since software solutions are far more easily scaled than their hardware equivalent, the Tensor Display concept could result in less expensive, yet superior 3D products.

We caught up with the project at SIGGRAPH, where the first demonstration included four fixed images, which employed a similar concept as the LCD version, but with backlit inkjet prints instead of motion-capable panels. Each displaying a slightly different static image, the transparencies were stacked to give the appearance of depth without the typical cost. The version that shows the most potential, however, consists of three stacked LCD panels, each displaying a sightly different pattern that flashes back and forth four times per frame of video, creating a three-dimensional effect that appears smooth and natural. The result was certainly more tolerable than the glasses-free 3D we’re used to seeing, though it’s surely a long way from being a viable replacement for active-glasses sets — Wetzstein said that the solution could make its way to consumers within the next five years. Currently, the technology works best in a dark room, where it’s able to present a consistent image. Unfortunately, this meant the light levels around the booth were a bit dimmer than what our camera required, resulting in the underexposed, yet very informative hands-on video you’ll see after the break.

Sure, Amazon’s Cloud Player works — as long as you’re in the U.S. or willing to do some tinkering — but it’s fairly simplistic at the moment. There are plenty of features missing which we’d like to see added — but since Cloud Player is a Web app we don’t have to wait for Amazon!

Google Chrome users, for example, can add playback hotkeys with an extension called keyMazony. Once installed, you’ll have keyboard control of your Amazon Cloud Player queue. keyMazony commands will work as long as you’re in the same Chrome window as Cloud Player, even if its tab doesn’t have focus. The key combinations are customizable as well — just make sure you don’t set up a combo that conflicts with another extension or Chrome’s built-in keyboard shortcuts.

flickr

It sure is nice to see some new developer action over at Flickr. The relatively slow-moving photo-sharing service has just announced a new sharing update, which consists of several new and easy ways to embed or link to your photos:

  • Share from Photo page: There’s a new sharing option on each and every photo page. When logged off, the button shows only Facebook and Twitter options. But once you log on, you get Tumblr and Blogger too, and can configure other sharing venues as well.
  • Share non-public content on Facebook: This doesn’t sound like a great idea, but you now can share private photos on Facebook if you’re so inclined (and if you trust your privacy settings).

That’s the gist of the update; it makes it easier to show off your pretty pictures in a plethora of places.

Flickr adds to sharing options, now easier to share photos across the Web originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 03:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

We’ve already heard that Microsoft was temporarily using “Windows 8-style UI” as a substitute for “Metro” now that the latter is on the outs, and it looks like they may now have a permanent replacement. According to some unnamed sources speaking to ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley, Microsoft has decided to simply use “Windows 8″ as a name for all things once known as Metro. That means “Metro-style applications” will now be known as “Windows 8 applications,” and that the “Metro user interface” will now be the “Windows 8 user interface.” What’s more, Foley also notes that the phrase “Windows 8 apps” has already turned up on the promo page for Lenovo’s new ThinkPad Tablet 2, which also indicates that the traditional Windows 8 apps will simply be known as “desktop” apps to distinguish the two. We’ll keep you posted if we hear more on the change from Microsoft itself.

Firefox 4 usage share graph

Using some early numbers from both StatCounter and Net Applications, Mozilla’s noisiest hominid, Asa Dotzler, has illustrated Firefox 4′s meteoric rise to around 5% of Web browser global usage share. Internet Explorer 9, which launched two weeks ago, seems to be enjoying a much more casual stroll in the park with just 1.5% of the global Web usage share.

Interestingly, we can see IE9 dipping between March 20 and 21, just before the ‘Important’ Windows Update rolled out. It’s hard to say whether IE9 is only growing because of the installed-by-default Windows Update, but that small dip definitely sticks out — did excitement peter out? Did people download IE9, try it out, and summarily uninstall it? Perhaps, given their close proximity, the stats show an attention shift from Microsoft to Mozilla?

Numbers-wise, if the bottom left corner of the graph shows 2.3 million downloads for IE9, we can guesstimate that that it has now been downloaded 5 million times. Firefox is clocking in at 37 million downloads after five days of public availability.

We wonder whether Microsoft knew its release schedule would coincide so closely with Firefox 4. Internet Explorer 9 — a great browser by almost every metric — was never going to do well against anything emanating from the maws of Mozilla. The main thing, though, is that Microsoft has now shown that it’s serious when it comes to the Open Web. If Internet Explorer 10 is good, and 11 and 12, then we might finally see it compete with the zealous Mozillan horde.

Firefox 4 rockets to 5% global usage share, IE9 wallows at 1.5% originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 05:31:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

avg livekive dropbox

A while back, we told you about AVG’s new LiveKive service, a new cloud synchronization and backup tool which appears to have been named after a vat in which mash is made during the brewing process. But enough about AVG’s odd choice of monikers — LiveKive has launched and is now ready to accept your files into the AVG cloud.

LiveKive takes aim at services like Dropbox and SugarSync, though at the moment it’s lagging behind in terms of features. As it stands, LiveKive is only compatible with Windows and OS X. There are no mobile clients yet, though with AVG’s strong presence on Android we wouldn’t be surprised to see an app arrive in the near future.

The company is offering a heck of a deal right now, however. If you sign up for a paid account during the launch phase, you can score unlimited storage for $80 for a whole year. You can’t even score 50GB per year at that price from Dropbox, so if cost and space are more important to you than cross-platform availability, LiveKive might be worth checking out.

If you’re not interested in ponying up any cash at the moment, you can still get a 5GB account free of charge. Just head on over, and create a LiveKive account.

Amazon Android Cloud Player appIt’s hard to believe: our world-spanning network, our Internet, which is the cornerstone of free speech and free society — which, on a good day, is capable of causing populist revolutions – is still crippled by banal geolocation restrictions. We are, of course, talking about Amazon’s two latest offerings, both of which are only available in the United States. Last week it was the excellent Android Appstore for Android, and today it’s the Amazon Cloud Player for Web and Android.

Along with Cloud Player, Amazon also launched Cloud Drive, which is basically just like any other cloud storage digital locker. It’s not particularly feature rich, and there’s no real reason to use it over something like SugarSync or SkyDrive — it does work outside the US, however.

Its primary purpose, as far as we’re concerned, is that it stores your your Cloud Player music in a subdirectory. You get 5GB of Cloud Drive storage for free, and then it’s $1 per gigabyte per year if you need more space.

The Amazon Cloud Player itself will not, to put it bluntly, blow your mind. It works, but it’s very much an early, and possibly rushed, release. Let’s dive in to the Web and Android players for a closer look.

windows 8 welcome screen

It’s not really a secret the Microsoft had planned on bringing bits of Windows Phone 7′s Metro UI to Windows 8, but we haven’t seen a lot of really telling evidence. However, with the Windows 8 milestone 3 build now available to Microsoft Connect partners, it was really just a matter of time before we started to get a peek.

Thanks to Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, we’ve now had a glimpse at what the Windows 8 welcome screen will look like. As you can see, the typography is very Metro indeed. Within Windows also mentions that the background image is customizable, and we’re wondering if it might not pull from your current Windows 8 theme. This particular shot shows the CTRL + ALT + DELETE login option, but we imagine you’ll still be able to log in by clicking your account picture tile as well.

Rivera and Thurrott also mention that the tablet version of the welcome screen will allow you to log in by swiping a pattern on the screen — as you can on current Android devices.

Akamai peak internet speeds jumped 25 percent year-to-year in Q1, Germany tops the mobile world

If you thought world internet access speeds were facing a large-scale slowdown, you can stop fretting for now. Data from Akamai suggests that average speeds were just 2.6Mbps, but that was a healthy 14 percent improvement over the fall and a noticeable 25 percent better than early 2011. Average peak internet connection speeds surged just as much in the first quarter of this year: at 13.5Mbps, the average maximum was a 10 percent season-to-season boost and that same 25 percent versus a year before. The leaders remain Asian territories with that ideal mix of dense populations and high technology, culminating in Hong Kong’s blazing 49.3Mbps typical downlink. Akamai attributes much of the growth in peak speeds to an explosion in “high broadband” connections, where 10Mbps is the minimum — countries like Denmark, Finland, South Korea, Switzerland and the US roughly doubled their adoption of extra-fast access in the past year.

Before cheering too loudly, we’d point out that mobile speeds are still trudging along despite HSPA+ and LTE making their presences felt. The most consistent speed came from an unnamed German carrier, which neared 6Mbps; the best regular American rate was 2.5Mbps, which underscores how far even some of the most developed countries have to go. There’s also a clear gap in regular landline broadband quality if we go by the US’ own National Broadband Plan standards. Just 60 percent of US broadband is over the 4Mbps mark, putting the US at 14th in the global ranks. We’re hoping that projects like Google Fiber can raise expectations for everyone, but you can hit the source shortly to get Akamai’s full study.

Evernote, the popular multi-platform ‘digital memory’ app, has done some serious re-tooling of its Web interface. In addition to a more polished UI that more closely mirrors the look of Evernote on the desktop, the update brings features like notebook stacks and snippet view to the Web.

Auto-saving is now enabled as well, and you can select multiple items by holding down the Cmd or Ctrl key on your Mac or Windows keyboard. If you’ve got items stored in your notebooks that you want to share with friends or co-workers, Evernote has improved that process, too. You can quickly post an item to Facebook, share it via email, or generate a Web sharing link to paste into an IM conversation or status update.

GameStop Mobile will not be an MVNO company still testing sales of prepaid SIMs from other carriers

In a recent interview with us, GameStop CEO Paul Raines confirmed that GameStop Mobile — an entity that appeared to be on the brink of selling prepaid GSM SIM cards to GameStop patrons — is nothing more than “a mockup.” If you’ll recall, an entire website launched back in May showcasing what appeared to be GameStop’s portal for hawking SIM cards that relied on AT&T’s network to provide service. At the time, the collective held its breath awaiting a confirmation of truth — after all, it’s not exactly easy to pry a data-only SIM out of AT&T’s hands, particularly one that’s free of a contract. Sadly, the CEO informed us that it was “just a creative thing,” noting that it “wasn’t even an idea being pitched.” Continuing, Raines stated:

“We don’t have an MVNO (laughing). If you are trying to provide your customers with a bundle that comes with a pre-owned phone and will allow them to play games, make calls, and everything else — you don’t have to have a network to do that; you can sell SIM cards and pre-paid plans, those things exist, and we are in the process of testing several to see which ones makes sense.”

Of course, accidentally publishing an entire website dedicated to the idea seems a bit crazy for something that wasn’t even being pitched — what kind of designer has that much free time? — but at least the story has an ending for now. “For now,” we say, because the aforementioned pitch could finally happen now that AT&T’s Mobile Share plans are debuting this month.

Prior to the unveiling of the new iPad 3, there was a lot of speculation and rumors about what processor would be on board and what features the new tablet. The older iPad 2 came with an A5 processor which included a dual core graphics processor and 512mb of RAM. The graphics processor takes care of all the display functions whilst the main processor handles all of the other functions. A lot of the rumors prior to the new iPad [...]

Federal appeals court says warrantless wiretapping is legal

A federal appeals court has ruled today that the US government can tap into Americans’ communications without worrying over frivolous things like “being sued” by its people. In what most sane civilians will probably see as a depressing loss of protection, a three-judge panel of the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that citizens can sue the United States for damages stemming from the use of information collected via wiretap, but not for the collection of information itself. In typical pass-the-buck fashion, Wired reports that Judge Michael Daly Hawkins and Judge Harry Pregerson added the following: “Although such a structure may seem anomalous and even unfair, the policy judgment is one for Congress, not the courts.” Alrighty. For those unaware, the back and forth surrounding this issue extends back to Congress’ authorization of the Bush spy program in 2008, and more specifically, a pair of US lawyers and the now-defunct al-Haramain Islamic Foundation — a group that was granted over $2.5 million combined in legal fees after proving that they were spied on sans warrants. The full report can be found in the PDF below.

Scientists generate 281gigapixel cell map using electron microscope

Electron microscopes can produce incredibly detailed and even 3D views of sub-cellular structures, but often at the cost of losing the bigger picture. Researchers at Leiden University in the Netherlands, however, have leveraged a technique called virtual nanoscopy that enables researchers to observe the whole of a cell and its intricate details in a single image. With the method, the team stitches together nanometer resolution photographs of what’s gone under the scope to create a map with adjustable zoom a la Google Maps. Their study created a 281-gigapixel image (packed with 16 million pixels per inch) of a 1.5-millimeter-long zebrafish embryo. If you’d like to take a gander at the ultra-high resolution fish or read up on the group’s findings for yourself, check out the source links below.

wordswithfriends

As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience… and that’s being rather charitable.

You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up.

Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What’s nice is that it doesn’t lose your saved games – this screenshot shows a game I’ve started before the update and continued after updating.

How’s the new update working out for you? Let us know in the comments!

Soon iPhone users won’t see the YouTube app on their handsets and will have to go to the YouTube website from the Safari browser. Apple won’t be including the app in iOS 6, as its licensing deal with YouTube is now ending. The video-sharing social networking service is now owned by Google, of course, and this could be Apple’s latest move to reduce the presence of its rival.

A good mobile application is a fine balance between simplicity and functionality. You’re using it on the go, so you don’t have a lot of time to sit there and fumble with the phone to figure it all out. But you also need it to be powerful enough to let you do whatever it is you’re trying to get done.

Hello Expense is one mobile app that gets it right. It’s an expense tracker that lets you use your Android-powered phone to quickly log the money you spend and then analyze it and see where it all went.

I recently had the chance to use it in a real-life situation – a road trip that took a few days and involved quite a few expenses. Logging each expense took seconds, and at the end of each day I could get a great overview of how much money I spent on each category so far.

Categories and tags are user-configurable; the app also sports its own number pad to make number entry easy, regardless of what keyboard you’re using.

Microsoft Office RT may lack macros, add-ins, other features

Well, the good news, as you already know, is that Office RT will be preloaded on all Windows 8 RT tablets — at least in preview form. The bad news, even if you spring for the full version, you may be dealing with a limited product. Word on the street is, that in order optimize performance and battery life, Microsoft pulled a number of features from the ARM-friendly version of its productivity suite. Among the missing features is support for macros, third-party add-ins and VBA scripts. A small number of other features are also reportedly on the chopping block, but without a final product to put our fingers on, it’s not clear which ones are getting axed.

The social network Cloud Girlfriend
Cloud Girlfriend, despite what it sounds like, doesn’t really have anything to do with cloud computing. Rather, it uses a cloud of women to pose as your girlfriend on Facebook, or your favorite social network of choice. The service is scheduled to launch ‘soon,’ and there’s no indication of how much it will cost.

With the tagline ‘The easiest way to get a girlfriend is to already have one,’ Cloud Girlfriend promises to be a very interesting startup indeed. The brains of the operation, David Fuhriman, speaking to CNET, says it’s all about fulfilling Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. “CloudGirlfriend.com can fulfill Maslow’s higher needs, even though the users know that the interaction is virtual. They will interact with a real person and see real profile images of the girl with whom they interact. This interaction can build confidence and esteem as well as provide real training experiences in navigating a friendship and a relationship.”

Our concern, of course, is that it’s very nearly April 1. We’re also worried by the fact that Fuhriman has a name that sounds ominously like a social subculture that we’ve grown strangely attracted to here in the Download Squad bunker.

Finally, just stop and think about it for a second. Because your cloud girlfriend will be entirely virtual, she could be based anywhere. She could be underage — or overage — or she might be someone who you know in real life. She could even be a relative of yours, and you’d never know.

Let’s not forget this is the Internet we’re talking about, folks. Worst case scenario, she could turn out to be a hairy, male truck driver from Texas. Such as… your dad, perhaps?

torus

As far as Tetris goes, most variations look quite similar. You’re usually looking at a “wall” of bricks directly from the front. Torus takes that notion and throws it away; as you might have guessed from the name (or screenshot), this Tetris clone is played on a ring-like 3D surface.

You rotate the ring itself with the arrow keys, while a Tetris-like piece slowly (excruciatingly slowly, in fact) descends from the top. As soon as you make a solid line, it disappears.

Not all pieces are Tetris-like; some of them wouldn’t really work with a regular Tetris game but are a good fit for Torus’ 3D format.

Torus is ideal for playing at the office, because it has absolutely no soundtrack. The game is dead-quiet. It’s also very very slow (slow enough for me to mention it twice in one post) so you can safely look away for a moment and then keep playing. Also, as soon as the game loses focus, it automatically pauses.

Bottom line: It’s an impressive demo of the power of HTML5; if it were a bit faster, it would have some serious addictive potential.

Apple releases iOS 6 beta 4 to developers

Apple has just released iOS 6 beta 4 (10A5376e) for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad to developers. iOS 6 beta 4 is currently available to paid developers via Apple’s developer portal, developer.apple.com and as an over-the-air (OTA) software update via Settings, General, Software Update on iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

iOS 6 was introduced at WWDC 2012 on Monday, June 11. Beta 2 was released on two weeks later on Monday, June 25. Beta 3 was released three week later on Monday, July 16. Now, Beta 4 has followed 3 weeks after that. While slightly longer between releases, iOS 6 is sticking to a more regular, Monday schedule than last year.

We previous looked at how many betas there might be for iOS 6, using past release schedules as checkpoints, and how iOS 6′s flagship features compare to those of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Windows Phone 8, and Blackberry 10.

If reports of a September 12, 2012 Apple special event are accurate, that will likely be the date for an iOS 6 Gold Master (GM) seed for developers, with general public release following on or around September 19, shortly before the new iPhone 5 launch rumored for September 21.

Thanks Ronald!

Qualcomm demos touchfree gesture controls powered by Snapdragon

Tablets are for touching — that much is understood. But Qualcomm’s making it so your fingers will be mostly optional, thanks to the Kinect-like powers of its Snapdragon CPU. To highlight this, the company’s uploaded a couple of videos to its YouTube channel that showcase two practical use case scenarios for the gesture tech: gaming and cooking. Using the device’s front-facing camera, users will one day soon be able to control onscreen avatars, page forward and back through recipes, setup profiles and even wake their slates all with simple hand or head movements. Alright, so tactile-free navigation of this sort isn’t exactly new, but it does up open up the tablet category to a whole new world of innovation. Head past the break to peek the demos in action.

Google, according to reports from “a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem” is finally locking down the open source and easily-fragmented Android operating system.

As it currently stands, Google hands over the ‘final’ code for each version of Android, and OEMs and developers then spend some time customizing the OS to fit their hardware, and to create a unique and marketable flavor. That’s all set to change, however.

Over the last few months, according to several people familiar with the matter, Android licensees such as HTC, Motorola and Facebook, have been asked to sign ‘non-fragmentation clauses.’ This new contract caveat will give Google the right to review and pass judgment on all changes to the Android OS. Two executives at Facebook say that they’re unhappy that Google gets to review its changes to Android — which is understandable, given Facebook and Google are direct competitors — and there have also been allegations that Google is preventing some Verizon devices from shipping because they include Microsoft’s Bing instead of Google search.

speedtest

Speedtest.net is pretty much the go-to site for quickly figuring out how fast (or slow) your connection really is and comparing the numbers your ISP boasts with what it actually delivers. And now it’s got a new coat of paint and a couple of neat features. In brief:

  • New UI: The map widget is much improved; it actually looks like a map now, and it’s easy to see where you are.
  • Smart server selection: If there are several test servers nearby, Speedtest will now ping each to see which has the least latency and use that for the test. You can still specify servers manually, too.
  • User accounts: You can sign up for a free account and aggregate results from several computers/connections.
  • Speed Wave: This new feature lets you add your test results to the results of many other users, and get a nice composite view.

All in all, you get some nice, new functionality and a snazzier interface to boot. Nice!

Yes, iOS 6 beta 4 removes YouTube app... and that could be a good thing

iMore is getting a steady stream of reports that iOS 6 beta 4 removes the native YouTube app from the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. This isn’t a huge surprise, as iMore reported back in May that Apple was going to be using iOS 6 to remove as much of Google as possible from their mobile operating system. Access to iOS user data is hugely valuable to Google, and Apple doesn’t want Google having that kind of competitive advantages. That’s why Apple has gone to the trouble of building their own native iOS 6 maps app, that’s why they’re using Siri to intermediate and broker queries away from Google, and it might also be why the YouTube app is gone from the iOS Home screen.

9to5 Mac caught wind of the removal almost immediately, and other sites are reporting it now as well. But here’s thing — it might not be entirely bad news. I might even be good news. Frankly, the ongoing animosity between Apple and Google has lead to iOS having substantially worse Google-powered apps than Android has been enjoying for a while now. While Apple and Google argued over turn-by-turn and Latitude, Android got better and better maps. The iOS YouTube app also lagged behind the Android YouTube app so much many preferred to use the pure Google web app instead.

For those of us who want the best of Apple and the best of Google, removing Google from the built-in apps — apps that only get updated when Apple updates the entire iOS firmware stack, if Apple chooses to include them in that update — could end up being great news.

For the same reasons Apple releases many of their apps into the App Store, and Google has decoupled some of their from the core Android OS and moved them into Google Play, If Google releases proper Google Maps and YouTube apps into the iOS App Store. Due to past federal scrutiny, it would be hard if not impossible for Apple to reject them, and it would allow Google to be Google and Apple to be Apple, and let iOS users once again enjoy the best of both worlds.

iOS YouTube was introduced after Apple first showed off the iPhone but before it launched in 2007. Back then, getting video on mobile was by no means and easy task. Times have changed. Flash on mobile was attempted and failed. H.264 video has become more and more prominent. The iOS YouTube app is no longer needed. YouTube.com or a dedicated Google YouTube app would far better serve Apple and Google users.

Just please, Google, don’t make it a thin UIWebView wrapper around the mobile YouTube site. If you release a YouTube app — and I really hope you do — make it as good if not better than your much-improved Google+ for iOS app.

The next iPhone's nanoSIM cradle allegedly leaked

Rumors about the new iPhone have basically everything but the screen shrinking. That includes the SIM card and its ejectable drawer. French site NoWhereElse scored some photos of what it claims is the new tray, alongside the 4S version for comparison. As you can clearly see, the new SIM slot is narrower and the insert has a slightly different cosmetic design. If the part turns out to be legit, it will hardly come as a surprise. Apple made a big push for a nano-SIM standard to be adopted over competing designs from Nokia, RIM and Motorola. If the rumors and Cupertino’s reliable refresh schedule hold up, you wont have to wait long to find out for sure. The next iPhone is expected to be announced next month. Hit up the source link for a few more photos.

The next iPhone’s nano-SIM cradle allegedly leaked originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 06 Aug 2012 14:42:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Here in the world of Linux, with hundreds of distributions to choose from, it seems safe to say that there’s something for just about everyone. Of course, that doesn’t mean we can’t all dream a little. While Linux is famous for its virtually infinite customizability, sometimes we may wish our favorite distro were a little bit different, even if just in some minor way.

Slices is a beautiful new iPhone Twitter client and it’s unlike any Twitter client you’ve seen before. It’s loaded with features, has a gorgeous look, and is extremely responsive. But its killer feature, and the reason for its name, is its ability to chop up your timeline into mini user-created feeds called Slices.

The first thing you’re probably wondering is, how does a “Slice” differ from a “List”? Lists are something you create and maintain, and are stored on Twitter’s servers as part of your Twitter account. Slices are also something you create and maintain, but they’re stored on Slices’ web site. That might sound redundant, and there’s certainly a confusing amount of overlap, but in theory Slices should be faster, easier, more granular, and more powerful than Lists. For example, Slices does conveniently, automatically create Tech & Science, Celebs, and TV & Movies Slices. They’ll also create carefully curated Slices around other things that might be of interest, like live events, let you carve up your timeline in mini-feed Slices, and offer you up a variety of other Slice categories.

Slices for Twitter is actually a very beautiful and fast Twitter client. A lot of thought was put into its design and it’s incredibly responsive. One of my favorite features is that along the top of the timeline, there are tabs for home, mentions, and direct messages. Tapping one of these does not switch your timeline view, but quickly pops up a little box that displays the desired Tweets. If you want to change your main timeline view, you can do so via the left side-panel.

Slices also has a mute feature called Zip It. With Zip It, you can choose to have any user, #trend, or keyword temporarily hidden from your timeline. Unzipping is very easy and quick to do.

The Explore feature of Slices is a bunch of popular Twitter users separated into sections. Along the top is a left-to-right scrollable list of sections and tapping on one will show the users in that list. Some sections are further separated into categories. For example, the Sports section has categories for Headlines, NFL Football, Baseball, MBA basketball, etc. One of the sections that many people may find useful is Live Events.

Slices is available for free, but is ad-supported. The ads can be removed with an in-app purchase for $4.99. Unfortunately, Slices doesn’t support push notifications.

The good

  • Gorgeous
  • Blazing fast
  • Explore sections and categories of users
  • Live Events stream
  • Shortcuts to you popups of your timeline
  • Zip It feature (mute)
  • Bookmark your favorite Twitters users and lists

The bad

  • Does not support push notifications
  • What’s the advantage of creating a Slice?

The conclusion

The first thing that popped into my head when I launched Slices for Twitter was “ohhhh! Pretty!” I’m definitely a big fan of its looks. Next, I become incredibly confused (and still am) about the appeal of creating a Slice when I already have Lists. Further, why would I spend time creating a Slice when it’s not going to be carried over to any other Twitter clients I may choose to use? But after I moved on and starting diving into everything else in Slices, I was continually more and more impressed. It’s filled with the “little things” that, together, create a beautiful experience. Not to mention — it’s smoking fast. Since Slices is free to download, I recommend all Twitter users as least give it a try. What do you have to lose?

windows 8Select Microsoft Connect partners — major players like HP — have been given their first taste of Windows 8. According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven’t been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore — which is being referred to as History Vault — has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We’ve also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It’s believed that you’ll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that’s left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.

Motorola RAZR V goes on sale at Bell, gives Canadians very thin slice of an Ice Cream Sandwich

Bell’s version of the Motorola RAZR V might not be the media darling that is the Atrix HD, but that shouldn’t dampen the interest for Canadians that can at last buy what’s potentially a slick deal for an Android 4.0 phone. For $30 on a 3-year contract, or $400 contract-free, the carrier is offering an arguably improved version of the late 2011 RAZR (Droid RAZR for Yankees). Although it bulks up slightly to a third of an inch thick, it’s still a skinny, Kevlar-clad wedge. The primary upgrade outside of the OS is a swap-out of that frankly mediocre Super AMOLED screen of the original RAZR smartphone for a much nicer ColorBoost LCD — sorry, ColourBoost. Otherwise, you’re getting the familiar 1.2GHz processor, 14.4Mbps HSPA+ data and 8-megapixel rear camera, although Motorola has shaved the built-in storage to 4GB to keep the costs down. We’d still be tempted to snag the Galaxy Nexus across the aisle to get us a taste of Jelly Bean for the same money, but Canucks with a penchant for Smart Actions now have an option outside of Rogers to get their fix.

Android

Android. The word itself makes each of us think of futuristic mechanical things that evolve quickly and know no bounds in their abilities. It's a good word, and perfect to describe the devices we hold with such high regard around these parts. And like the androids we think of from Hollywood movies or dusty old science fiction novels, our phones and tablets are slowly working their way into every nook and cranny of our life, taking over one step at a time. We embrace it, we benefit from it, and most of all we enjoy it.

But Android is changing. Very few phones are released with stock Android, and the custom versions (don't call them skins) are getting more and more intricate and polished. OEMs are putting a lot of work into the software running on the phones they sell, making them stand out as their own product. Join me after the break, and let's talk about what Android is, what it isn't, and what might happen in the future.

Pantech P9090 Magnus swings by FCC with AT&T LTE

Despite cranking out plenty of high-end devices in Asia, Pantech has built itself a reputation in the US as a budget OEM — but continues to improve its products regardless. Having already proven its ability to crank out LTE phones on the cheap with the Burst, it appears ready to follow up with another phone on AT&T’s next-gen network, as evidenced by documents released by the FCC this afternoon. This particular handset, dubbed the Magnus on its WiFi certification paperwork, sports quad-band LTE (700 / 850 / 1700 / 1900), a radio combo that’s starting to be quite the trend for AT&T-bound phones recently — likely done to ensure the GSM carrier’s refarming efforts go as smoothly as possible. The federal docs also reveal the presence of NFC (suggesting this will come with Android 4.x included), and Bluetooth certification tells us we can also expect it to offer the 4.0 standard. The paperwork is fuzzy on more details, but we hope its arrival is just around the corner.

SLIPS synthetic liquid repeller is inspired by carnivorous, enemy to insects and graffiti artists alike

When a team of Harvard researchers wanted to create the ultimate liquid- and solid-repelling surface, they looked toward the Nepenthes pitcher plant, where curious insects check in and never check out, thanks to slippery walls that lead to their tiny, horrific fate. The tropical plant inspired the creation of SLIPS (Self-healing, Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surface), a synthetic material that utilizes nano/ microstructured substrates, capable of repelling just about anything you can throw at it. During a visit to the hallowed Crimson halls, the team was kindly enough to show off the material through a series of messy, messy demos, dropping water, motor oil, liquid asphalt and newly-mixed concrete on aluminum and glass. The team even went crazy with a can of black spray paint, comparing the results to a Teflon surface. The outcome was the same in all case — an amazingly repellent material.

The team has published a number of papers on the stuff, including ones that demonstrate its ice- and bacteria-repelling properties. Oh, and like its natural inspiration, SLIPS does a great jobs keeping bugs off its surface. You can check out our demos and one unhappy ant filmed by the SLIPS team. No insects were harmed in the making of our video, at least — and the lab assures us that ant had a good life before learning the hard way why it shouldn’t mess with Harvard scientists.

Splashtop Remote Desktop now available on Windows 8, gives you all the access you need

With Splashtop currently holding spots in a slew of Android slabs, Cupertino’s notorious iDevices and even HP’s cadaverous TouchPad, the next obvious step was to set up its Remote Desktop shop inside Redmond’s upcoming Windows 8. And smartly enough, that’s exactly what Splashtop’s done. In preparation for the eventual release of Microsoft’s tile-friendly OS in a couple of months, the service has let it be know that its new (and very handy) tablet application’s now ready to take advantage of the system’s native gestures while doing what it does best — which is giving remote access to both Mac and Windows PCs. Given its “consumer preview” status, the Splashtop app isn’t fully cooked just yet, but it should give anyone a good idea of what to expect once the real deal becomes available.

Android CentralAlready extensively leaked ahead of its expected launch at the Sony IFA press conference, the Sony LT30 "Mint" appears to be a smaller version of the company's H2 2012 flagship, the LT29i "Hayabusa" (known as the Xperia GX in Japan).

Now it seems we may have stumbled across the final branding for this device, as a newly unearthed DLNA testing certificate identifies the LT30 as the "Sony Xperia T." It'd certainly tie in with Sony's letter-based naming scheme, and clearly position it above the Xperia S in Sony's smartphone line-up. Specs are rumored to include a Snapdragon S4 dual-core CPU inside, a 720p display, 13MP camera and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, complete with on-screen buttons.

The name might also lend some credibility to unconfirmed rumors that the "Hayabusa" will come to market under the name "Xperia Z." That'd certainly leave plenty of letters in between for any intermediary or entry-level devices Sony might have planned.

Whatever letters Sony picks out of its bowl of corporate Spaghettios, we'll be live in Berlin, Germany later this month to cover the resulting products.

GOgroove speaker

Android phones and tablets have a lot of different options for playing music. Whether you're streaming it, playing it locally, or creating your own the best way to share is with a stand-alone external speaker of some sort. The included speaker options will work in a pinch, but let's be honest — nobody is buying any mobile device for the great speaker quality. When you're in a group, an external model is a must.

So what better way to listen to a song or two than with a Bugdroid styled speaker? Enter the GOgrove Pal Bot. It looks a lot like Android's beloved mascot, and is a simple connection via the 3.5mm jack on all modern Android phones and tablets. The specs say it lasts 6 hours on a charge when played at full volume (the only way to play music) and at under a pound it looks to be pretty damn portable.

Sure, there are probably a lot of options out there that offer better audio quality, but they don't look like Bugdroid! For a day at the beach or a camping trip this one should suffice, and it's only $30 at Amazon. As a music lover and certified Android nerd, I had to pass this one on as soon as I saw Aces and 8s showing it off in the forums.

Kobo for Android gets updated with support for more languages, deeper Facebook integration

App updates are always nice, right? Well, if you’re an avid user of Kobo’s intellectual offerings on Android handsets and slates, you’ll be happy to know the all-things-eReader service has rolled out a fresh update to its eBooks application. Most notably, this new version brings support for an array of new languages within the app, such as French, Italian, Dutch, German and Spanish. That’s not it, however, and in addition to gaining a “multi-language experience,” Kobo’s eBooks application now also offers an in-book progress indicator, a two-page landscape view for folks using tablets and the ability to share current readings with friends on Facebook or Kobo Pulse. As usual, you’ll find the refreshed goods inside Google’s Play store, link for that is down below.

Should you ever find yourself needing to discuss the state of the robotic hand in the early 21st century, Harvard professor Robert Howe seems about as good a place to start as any. The professor founded the school’s BioRobotics Laboratory in 1990 and has devoted a good deal of his time to the quest for perfect robot extremities. The last few years have seen a number of breakthroughs for Howe and his team including, notably, the SDM (Shape Deposit Manufacturing) hand, an adaptable and rugged robot gripper that utilizes a single motor to manipulate its eight joints. Such machines have, in the past, often relied on precise image sensing to determine the exact size and shape of an object, in order to configure their digits perfectly before attempting to pick it up. The SDM hand is a lot more forgiving. The pulley system at play distributes equal tension to the fingers in an adaptive transmission that allows motion to continue in other fingers, should one’s movement be hampered.

The joints themselves are extremely compliant as well, adapting and conforming to the shape of an object, thanks in part to their ability to pivot in three dimensions. The Shape Deposit Manufacturing technology used to create the fingers, meanwhile, adds an important level of durability, letting Howe bang them against a table (a trick he happily performed for us) and expose them to water — both features that are quite often absent in more complex (and far more expensive) models. The SDM technology, developed at Stanford, allows for the creation of fingers that are a single piece, with their parts embedded in plastic. The larger model shown off by Howe serves as great visual when describing the benefits of the single motor system, but the team has also developed a smaller version, with the requisite motors embedded in a far more compact chassis, which we also got a peek at.

The hand will likely be targeted at home and office use, with some key applications for assisting the disabled. Check out a video of Howe describing the technology to us during our visit to the school and a clip of the SDM doing its thing in the labs, which should help feed your desire to watch robot hands get banged by hammers.

Sid the Science Kid Read & Play is a new app by PBS Kids that is designed to develop early science exploration. It features two story books, jokes, games, sing along music videos, coloring pages and more!

There are two different stories included with Sid the Science Kid: The Trouble with Germs, and What’s That Smell. For each story, you can choose to read it yourself, have it read to you, or set it on Auto Play.

In The Trouble with Germs, Sid’s dad has a cold, so when his mom and dad tell Sid that he needs to keep washing his hands to prevent himself from also getting sick, Sid wants to know more about germs since he can’t see them. When his mom shows him a picture of germs from a microscope, Sid gets really intrigued and tells his friends at school which then invokes an impromptu lesson about germs from his teacher.

In What’s That Smell, Sid is disgusted by his baby brother Zeke’s diaper and is intrigued about the fact that he can smell Zeke’s diaper even though Zeke is down the hall and in a different room. Sid’s mom reminds him that Zeke’s diaper is not the only smell that he can smell from far away, but also other things like his dad’s famous pancakes. Again, Zeke takes the topic to school and his teacher teaches the class about smell and molecules and how they interact with the wind and our noses.

Other sections of Sid the Science Kid includes Sing Along Music Videos, a Coloring Book, a game called I Sense to practice what you know about senses by identifying traits of different objects based on how they feel, smell, sound, and look, a Sticker Book, and a Spot the Difference game.

I’ve spent a little time with Sid the Science Kid and am impressed. The stories are fun and interesting. On Auto Play, the pages turn nice and fast. If your child is a fan of the show, I definitely recommend picking this one up. If you do, let us know what you think!

Blazing trails is hard work. Following them is easy. Whether you’re an explorer, twin machetes in hand, hacking your way through the densest of underbrush, a developer launching a breakthrough app into a crowded app store, or a consumer electronics giant, packaging existing technologies in a way that finally makes them exciting and accessible to the mainstream, it can cost a fortune and take a tremendous amount of time and effort to bring a winning product to market.

And relatively little to copy it.

That’s simply the reality of the modern market. Whether you’re a boot-strapping indie dev who managed to produce a hit game only to see a giant gaming house replicate it almost exactly, or a mega corporation who releases market-changing — even market-creating — mobile devices only to see a string of like-designed products take over that market — or at least make the attempt — that’s how the world works.

Samsung almost embarrassingly copied Apple products from power plugs to icons, mobile to desktop, and the massive manufacturing partners and retail competitors are now fighting it out in court solely to determine how much, if any, of that copying was legal. And Apple has copied their share of ideas and implementations as well over the years.

Indeed, innovation stands on the shoulders of what came before, great artists steal inspiration from the great artists that came before, and everything is a remix.

While that might suck for the indie dev who watches the replicated versions of their hard work hit the app store — in some cases over and over again — and it might suck for Apple seeing their delightful interface ideas get promiscuously given away for free, it changes nothing.

Even in the case of smash hits, innovators enjoy only a narrow lag between launch and replication to truly reap the profits of their creations. If something is good, if something works, if something is successful, it will be copied, it will be cloned, it will be knocked off. Is it really any coincidence that the company whose products copied Apple’s the most have also been the most successful in their own platform space?

The only way to combat copyists and hold copying at bay is to take those windows of success and build on them, and do it in a way that’s not as easy to copy.

That’s why Apple doesn’t just sell phones and tablets.

They sell iTunes and iCloud. They sell AirPlay and Siri. They sell an experience that becomes something that “just works” together. They sell something that, once you buy in, buying in even more provides even greater value than the sum of the parts.

You can own an iPad and a different company’s phone or media box or computer. But owning an iPad and and iPhone and an Apple TV and a Mac brings you far greater value. Your apps look the same and work the same across your devices. Your music and movies and TV shows play across devices. Your personal information, browser tabs, and reading positions sync across everything you own.

You can download a network-sponsored app on your iPhone, have the same app just appear on your iPad, and your family can be AirPlaying any event in the Olympics on your big screen TV only minutes later.

That’s just one example of many that Apple absolutely nails. It’s functionality, customer experience, and brand affection that’s non-trivial to copy. It’s a product strategy that’s almost incomprehensible to those who’s strategy is to copy.

Right now, Apple is spending millions of dollars on lawyers, battling Samsung across continents, and revealing prototype devices and product histories they would never have otherwise revealed, because they’re indignant that Samsung has copied the iPhone and iPad the way Samsung has likely copied refrigerators and countless other products for decades.

When Steve Jobs launched the iPhone he said Apple was 5 years ahead of the competition. Now, 5 years later, even the competition’s best new devices can’t match the multitouch user experience of iOS in consistency or quality, or the content of iTunes in accessibility or availability. But they are matching and even beating Apple when it comes to individual features and functionality.

Apple’s reaction to Samsung is understandable on a very human level. Most of us have likely wished we could do the same thing when we’ve felt copied or ripped off. Including those who have felt copied by Apple.

It sucks, really and truly. But ultimately it’s a losing battle at best, and a distraction at worst.

Tim Cook said Apple couldn’t be the developer for the world, but the alternative is much, much worse.

Regardless of how Apple vs. Samsung plays out, or individual app copying plays out, it’s not in the courtroom that innovation has to win. It’s in the product design labs, go to market strategies, and retail shelves. Because the copying never stops. And the only thing worse than being copied is losing the ability to innovate and becoming a copyist.

google talk guru answersBots — like the kind which automate IRC rooms and Google Wave — are a good thing to know about. There are plenty of useful bots worth knowing about, too, including the Google Talk Guru.

Just add guru@googlelabs.com to your GTalk buddies, and you can start firing off questions. Lifehacker suggests that the same types of queries supported by Google SMS will work, though we didn’t have any luck getting a response out of the Guru with phrases like “score detroit red wings” or “sushi R3N 1Y1.”

Still, Guru does answer a good variety of questions and it works right within your favorite IM app. It’s well worth adding to your friend list, especially for getting answers on the go on your mobile device of choice.

Facebook has announced that its two mobile sites — m.facebook.com and touch.facebook.com — have been unified, bringing a simpler mobile experience to Facebook users. And there are a lot of those — a quarter billion, according to Facebook.

Smartphone users won’t be losing any functionality because of the consolidation. If your phone supported the enhacned features offered by touch.facebook.com, the new site will automatically flip the switch when you visit.

Rolling the sites together helps simplify things for Facebook’s developer team. Now changes can be pushed to a single site instead of two separate sites, which makes it easier to ensure that all mobile users receive a nearly identical experience regardless of the device they’re using.

The new Facebook mobile can also check to see if your phone supports geolocation. If it doesn’t, you won’t be seeing much of Facebook Places — which obviously relies heavily on geolocation. Images can also be optimized on the fly to keep page performance from suffering on less powerful devices. You can see the three different versions of the share button below, courtesy our friends at TechCrunch.

Apple Store App updated to add iWork checkout feature for Macs

The Apple Store app for iOS has been updated with the option to have Pages, Keynote, or Numbers pre-installed on any MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, or Mac Pro. When you order your new Mac you can choose to have the software installed prior to you receiving the computer.

If you don’t need all of the iWork apps you can choose only the ones you need and each will be priced just as they are in the Mac App Store at $19.99. Other than adding the new feature to have the iWork suite pre-installed, we haven’t noticed any other changes. While it’s nice to have a computer come with pre-installed software we’re interested in how this works in relation to the Mac App Store and tying to your Apple ID. Perhaps when you check out Apple will just tie the purchase to whatever Apple ID you used to check out.

If anyone has went through the process and added any of the iWork apps as a pre-installation, were you able to re-download them again through the Mac App Store on other Macs? Let us know!

Denon’s got a snazzy new pair of iPhone speaker docks to show the world — the Cocoon Home and Cocoon Portable. The Home features AirPlay streaming from iPhones, iPods, Mac and PCs through 100 watts of total power. Its 25-percent smaller sibling has 50 watts of power and battery life of up to five hours. Both docks will be hitting this summer for $599 and $499, respectively. We’re crossing our fingers for a Steve Guttenberg spokesman deal. Full press details after the break.

windows 8 welcome screen

Apparently this Microsoft patent has something to do with using mobile devices with the Kinect system or using mobile devices with kinect built-in or creating a Holopac with your Kinect phone? I really don’t know. If Microsoft made a tablet with Kinect controls, that would be really awesome for mobile gaming, but I’m pretty sure that’s not what’s happening here. Embracing geotagging how to journal your trips and contribute to Google Earth with snapshots

Geotagging. It’s not exactly a long, lost art, but it’s certainly not something most folks bother to do after a trip. Avid travelers, hikers and the general outdoorsy crowd have been embracing the feature for years, though, and it’s actually seeping into the mainstream without most individuals even noticing. How so? Smartphones. Given the proliferation of iPhones, Android handsets and Windows Phone devices making their way onto the market — coupled with the explosive use of geo-minded social networks like Path, Instagram and Foursquare — an entire generation is now growing up in a geotagged world. Phone users have it easy; so long as there’s a data connection and an embedded GPS module (commonplace in modern mobile devices), there lies the ability to upload a photo with a patch of metadata embedded. Snap a shot at a national park, upload it, and just like that, viewers and friends from around the world now have an idea as to what a specific place on the Earth looks like.

For travel hounds like myself, that’s insanely powerful. I’m the kind of person that’ll spend hours lost in Google Earth, spinning the globe around and discovering all-new (to me, at least) locales thanks to the magic of geotagging. It’s sort of the photographic equivalent to putting a face to a name. By stamping latitude, longitude, altitude and a specific time to any given JPEG, you’re able to not only show the world what you saw, but exactly when and where you saw it. It’s a magical combination, and with GPS modules finding their way into point-and-shoot cameras — not to mention external dongles like Solmeta’s magnificent N3 (our review here) — there’s plenty of opportunity to start adding location data to your photos. For more on the “Why would I want to?” and “How would I best display ‘em?” inquiries, let’s meet up after the break.

Droid RAZR HD

Just yesterday we saw some new images of the Motorola RAZR HD appear online, and today another couple of pictures have come out. Showing off the entire back, as well as the about screen showing the device running Android 4.0.4, these new images bring hope to this being a final design style. Unlike yesterdays pictures, this one is showing Verizon's iconic 4G LTE branding on it, meaning this could be the unit we will see on Verizon, and hopefully sooner than later. This is still an engineering unit, as you can clearly see on the left hand side, so here's to hoping that this thing is flying right through the approval process, and will be making its way into consumer hands shortly.

I have a thing for full-screen text editing. I use WriteMonkey for my creative writing needs, and VIM in a full-screen PuTTY session for my Web development work. That being the case, I’m all over the monospace, dark-background, focused editing scene.

OmmWriter attempts to take that aesthetic and make it somehow more spiritual, with three picturesque backgrounds and ambient background audio tracks (there are seven of each in the paid version).

I’m of two minds about this app. On the one hand, yes, it’s beautiful. But if you want music as a background to your writing, why not pick your own soundtrack with Winamp or Foobar2000 running in the background?

OmmWriter also offers three keyboard-clicking sounds, which are kind of nice. None of these features are groundbreaking, really. OmmWriter could be seen as a way to gently ease into the world of distraction-free writing — in case something like WriteMonkey’s dark background is just too oppressive for you.

After the fold you can see a video showcasing several of OmmWriter’s features and creative soundscapes.

Samsung starts massproducing 4x faster mobile flash memory, kickstarts our phones and tablets

Samsung isn’t content to leave fast NAND flash memory to traditional solid-state drives. Its Pro Class 1500 promises a big jolt to the performance of frequently pokey smartphone and tablet storage. By how much? That name is a clue — it reaches 1,500 IOPS (inputs/outputs per second) when writing data, which along with 3,500 IOPS data reads is about four times faster than any previous embedded flash chip Samsung has tested. In the real world, that leads to as much as 140MB/s when reading data and 50MB/s for writes. The speed comes after Samsung has thrown virtually every trick in the book at its new chips, including a dense 20-nanometer manufacturing process, quick toggle DDR 2.0 memory with its own controller and a new JEDEC memory standard with 200MB/s of bandwidth to spare. Samsung hasn’t named customers for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB parts that are rolling out of the factories, although we’d do well to remember that a flourishing phone business doesn’t guarantee that the only major customer is Samsung itself: even in the face of legal challenges, Samsung still has at least one noteworthy client that tends to snap up much of its flash supply.

Lenovo teases IdeaTab A2107 and A2109, hints at September US availability

Lenovo’s been racking up its IdeaTab portfolio with slates like the S2109 and S2110, but apparently there’s a lot more where that came from. The Chinese company’s currently showcasing two new US-bound, ICS-based IdeaTabs on its website, starting with the 7-inch A2107 which had previously made the rounds in China under a different moniker, and followed by a 9-inch (1280 x 800) A2109 that’s said to be “full size fun on a small budget.” Unfortunately, full spec and pricing details are relatively scarce at the moment, though Lenovo’s product page does tell us they should both be available at some point next month. For now, feel free to head over to the source link below if you’d like to give ‘em a quick view.
