Color, the $41-million-in-funding location-oriented photo sharing startup, is susceptible to simple GPS spoofing. With nothing more than a jailbroken iPad or iPhone, you can use FakeLocation to trick Color into thinking you’re somewhere else. Within seconds you can be browsing photos that were snapped thousands of miles away. With a little digging, you can pore through photos not intended for your eyes.

Of course, such a hack isn’t illegal as such — every photo you take with Color is public. With FakeLocation you are simply circumventing Color’s very limited location-oriented security mechanism. It does undermine Color’s usefulness (and uniqueness), though — if nefarious types can sit in their bedroom or basement and eavesdrop on classy dinner parties and wild night club soirees, people might be less inclined to share personal photos with those around them.

Fortunately, both for Color and its users, this is an easy security hole to plug — at least in the short term. The app (or server-side) code simply checks to see if the user has ‘teleported’ an impossibly large distance, without any intermediate steps in between. In the long term, though, Color’s users must be aware that its social graph is completely public. Color’s users must realize that every photo they upload is visible by anyone, from any place.

After the break, just to elucidate a little on Color’s actual business model and ultimate intention, we have two amazing quotes from Bill Nguyen, Color’s founder.

SiriIt is indeed raining jailbreaks for iPhone 4S! Just days after the Absinthe Jailbreak of iPhone 4S, iPad 2 Untethered On iOS 5.0.1, here comes another iOS 5 untethered jailbreak – SiriToggles, that works as a voice-activated personal assistant exclusively on the iPhone 4S and promises to add new functions to Siri.

SiriToggles as a third party application works with any device running Siri, even comprising those that have had the voice-recognition assistant ported to them.  It not only enables Siri to turn services like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Airplane mode on and off using vocal commands; but also to do tasks like adjusting screen brightness, launching applications, finding battery life estimate, etc.

SiriToggles is available for free in the Big Boss repository through the Cydia Store. This new jailbreak app has indeed opened up a gateway of opportunities for the jailbreaking developer community to create apps that can add more functionality to Siri.

Will SiriToggles inspire more jailbreak?

If you remember, the launch of Siri with the iPhone 4S had generated a lot of interest for the Nuance-technology enabled speech-recognition tool since its inception, including a few grievances too about Siri being selective to accents and even its limitations in catering to information about certain geographical regions.

SiriToggles, can be an inspiration to all the developers in business if more such apps can be developed for addressing the flaws in Siri. And going by the news of the US Government contemplating terming jailbreaking as illegal, some path-breaking apps at the Cydia Store must be definitely on your wishlist.

While we look forward to knowing your wishlist for the Cydia Store here, also do let us know if you could get the best of Siri with SiriToggles. But before you get SiriToggles, you’ll require to jailbreak iPhone 4S.

So, what are you waiting for?

SwitchMe brings makeshift guest account to Android root users, so lend that weirdo your phone

Wouldn’t it be absolutely splendid if you could hand your phone over to a friend (or complete stranger) without fear of them mucking up your system or digging into your personal bits? Yes, we’d absolutely love to see guest accounts become standard issue on all handsets, but until that day arrives, a new application called SwitchMe will work in a pinch. Word of caution, this app requires root privileges, which may deter many folks.

Rather than allowing multiple sessions to run simultaneously, as you’d expect on a desktop computer, SwitchMe lets users easily jump between different installations of Android — they exist separately and don’t talk to each other. Naturally, this also allows hobbyists to easily jump between their favorite ROMs, and gives developers clean sandboxes for app testing. The first hit is free, but if you want to manage more than two installations, you’ll need to buy the unlock key for $1.98. Still, those who find the SwitchMe useful should consider tossing the developer a few bones.

Update: As a commenter pointed out, multiple ROMs are not supported at this time. The developer has verified this, stating that any content inside /system cannot be changed. Bummer.

[Thanks, Alan]

Strava Cycling Review: A Must Have App For Cycling Lovers
I’ve always been an avid cyclist and I strongly believe cycling is one of the best ways to stay fit and build your stamina. I’ve always been an avid cyclist and I strongly believe cycling is one of the best ways to stay fit and build your stamina. While I’ve used a number of cycling apps on my iPhone, I’ve been searching for that elusive app which offers a complete riding experience coupled with accurate measurements and full social integration. I had heard of Strava as a company which forced users to have a dedicated GPS device or use separate apps to track their rides and then upload the data. The company recently released it’s Strava Cycling iPhone app and there was no way I could resist reviewing it.

Once installed, the app prompts you to sign up for an account.

As is the norm with most social media enabled apps these days, Strava Cycling lets users sign in using their Facebook credentials using Facebook Connect.

Once you are signed in, you can start recording your time by hitting the Play button in the New Ride tab as shown below.

Once you complete the ride, the results would appear in the Feed tab. The ride details contains a number of useful parameters such as ride time, distance covered, elevation gain, average and maximum speed as shown below.

The Strava Cycling app is pretty flexible in terms of customization. You can configure the desired units and email alerts using the Settings tab as shown below.

The “Profile” tab contains all your riding stats from the last month of riding. The app does a wonderful job of keeping track of the number of total rides, miles ridden and feet climbed. Your profile also shows the following additional stats – average rides per week, average distance biked per week, average time spent biking. I love the way Strava Cycling breaks down the cycling stats based on month, year and overall records.

All in all, I liked Strava for two reasons – simplicity and accuracy. The app is extremely simple to use with zero learning curve – just what cyclists and riders need. Secondly, I matched the Strava app stats with a GPS recorder and I was amazed by the accuracy of the app.  However, I would like to see future versions of Strava offer better social media integration with the ability to share cycling information between fellow cyclists over Facebook and Twitter.

Despite those limitations, I would still regard Strava Cycling as one of the best cycling apps that I’ve used till date.

Thieves using Apple Stores to replace stolen iPhones
Acoording to a report by Reuters, Apple’s generous customer service may be causing huge problems for victims of iPhone theft. The warranty plan is tied to the iPhone and not

Acoording to a report by Reuters, Apple’s generous customer service may be causing huge problems for victims of iPhone theft. The warranty plan is tied to the iPhone and not the person who owns the phone; this means anyone can take an iPhone to an Apple Store for service or replacement.

The ease of trading in stolen iPhones and selling their replacements makes them nearly as tempting as grabbing cash. In cities from coast-to-coast, reports of iPhone thefts are common. While some thieves sell the phones through the traditional channels of fencing stolen goods, examples abound of stolen iPhones being brought back to Apple, as if broken, for either replacement or a discount on a new unit. ”Apple seems to have not considered stolen devices and instead is relying on the honor system,” says Robert Siciliano, a consultant for Intel Corp’s technology security unit McAfee and an identity theft expert. “The honor system is devised with the mindset that we are all sheep and there are no wolves.” Siciliano says he has known of this problem for a while, but doesn’t see any immediate solution. “Until consumers scream loud enough about this issue, Apple probably won’t do anything about it.”

While this approach is fantastic for the honest iPhone owners, thieves are using Apple’s good nature to carry out a type of laundering for stolen iPhones. When a phone is reported as stolen, a carrier can blacklist it as stolen and disable it by using its device specific IMEI number. If the device has been swapped or replaced at an Apple Store, that security measure has now been bypassed. This enables a thief to sell on or use a brand new iPhone without fear of recrimination.

Apple has yet to comment on the findings within the report but let’s hope a simple solution can be found that will not cause pain for the honest amongst us. The last thing we need is for Apple to change its policies and make life more difficult when it comes to iPhone service and replacement.

Windows Phone 7.5 gets multiple Google Calendar sync, additional Gmail features

Google’s improved how its calendar and email services interact with Windows Phones running the Mango update. Users can now cram up to 25 different calendars into the Metro OS’s built-in calendar app. The setup’s not exactly seamless; you need to navigate your Windows Phone to the Google Sync page, login and check the boxes found there. While testing on our phones, although one device was able to immediately sync, the other couldn’t pick up on our multiple calendars. We had to delete and re-assign our Google account to the phone in order to get it working. However, once we did, the Metro styling lent itself well to multiple calendar listings, with the ability (like the web-based Google Calendar) to assign colors to each.

At the same Google Sync page, you can now choose to enable the “send mail as” feature if you’re using multiple addresses, with the option to delete unwanted emails instead of archiving. However, aside from replying from the same address that you received emails to, we haven’t discovered a way to assign new mails to our multiple guises. We were able to send messages through our own Engadget mail account, although that’s then used on all future missives. Despite these rough edges, it remains a welcome bit of extra functionality. Are we still longing for a dedicated Gmail app? Definitely. We just hope those devs don’t drop the ball.

This is the LikeBelt: a concept device that inserts an NFC chip into a belt-buckle. Instead of tapping your mobile device on a “check-in” tag, you get the belt buckle close enough to do the same. There are only two downsides: how close you have to get and where most people’s belts are situated. Suffice to say, the Quagmire-style movements required to ensure a connection aren’t the sort of thing you’d do in front of your parents, priest or spouse. The creators provide instructions on how to build your own at the source link, but before you consider it, we insist you watch the video of it in action after the break. No, seriously.

No, it’s not another Fast & Furious sequel, it’s something much quicker — 800 billion times quicker, to be precise. Scientists at DESY (Germany’s largest particle physics center) are premiering the Guinness World Record-holding fastest “movie” to a select audience at its light sources users’ meeting. The film was shot using an X-ray Laser, and splitting the light in two. By firing one beam off on a minuscule detour (0.015 millimeters) and delaying its arrival by 50 femtoseconds, two separate images are captured. Okay, so two frames isn’t exactly Lord of the Rings, but it’s still the smallest interval ever recorded. This technique won’t be popping up in Hollywood any time soon — instead, it’s actually used for snapping subatomic glimpses of ultra-fast molecular processes and chemical reactions. Despite the brevity of this record-breaking flick, the plot is apparently still more complex than Tokyo Drift.

NimbleBit calls out Zynga over Tiny Tower clone Dream Heights

Powerhouse social gaming company Zynga, as you may or may not know has a new app on the market called Dream Heights that looks strikingly similar to small indie developer NimbleBits’s award winning Tiny Tower — so much so that NimbleBit has called Zynga out on the matter.

Dream Heights was released last week, albeit solely to the Canadian App Store, which is a common place for freemium apps to be tested before wider release. Since then many in the community have remarked on the similarities to Tiny Tower. While the games each have their own unique styling, the premise for them both is identical and there is no denying the similarities between the two.

NimbleBit let the community — and more importantly Zynga — know they were indeed aware of the situation, when Ian Marsh tweeted out a comedic image addressing the issue. Later Tweets from David Marsh, lent some more color to the matter, referencing Zynga’s failed purchase attempt of NimbleBit.

“Even when you refuse to go work for Zynga, sometimes you end up doing work for Zynga anyway,”

There are plenty of copy-cat apps in the iTunes App Store and Apple does have guidelines that attempt to help stop such things from happening. Stoneloops is an example of a game that has been MIA from the App Store for years following an infringement complaint. But that was a case of a huge developer using legal muscle against a small, indie developer. This is exactly the opposite way around.

How effective NimbleBit can afford to be is a big question. No matter how you look at though, it’s a pretty shady move on Zynga’s part — even if they’re not the only ones out there doing it. Just because Zynga can copy a game doesn’t mean they should, and the fact they tried to legitimately buy NimbleBits first and failed, then copied the game, only makes matters worse.

Sony Xperia S boasts ‘dirt-repellent’ coating and ‘fast charging’

Android Central

As launch day approaches, more technical details of Sony's new Xperia S are starting to trickle out. We learned all the key specifications at CES (where we also got some hands-on time with the device), but now two interesting new features of the Sony flagship phone have come to light, according to Swiss tech site PocketPC.ch.

Firstly, the site reports that a Sony Ericsson product manager told them the Xperia S has a "dirt-repellent", "UV-active nano-coating". We're not even going to pretend to know what that means, but if it protects the device from scrapes and daily wear-and-tear, we're all in favor. For what it's worth, the presence of an "anti-stain shell" has already been confirmed on the official Sony Ericsson Facebook page.

The product manager also reportedly spilled a few details on the new battery tech employed by the Xperia S. The phone is said to use improved lithium-polymer technology that's capable of recharging in half the time taken by earlier models, with ten minutes of charging time apparently being enough to power the device for a whole hour.

The Xperia S is due to launch in Europe from the second week of March. Its American counterpart, the AT&T Xperia Ion, will land stateside during the second quarter.

It hit two million paying subscribers in September of last year and 2.5 million in November, and now Spotify has hit another big milestone. According to the Financial Times, it now has three million subscribers paying for one of its premium services, which reportedly represents more than 20 percent of its active user base. As the FT notes, that percentage is up from 15 percent in March of last year, and Spotify says that its “active” users don’t include folks who signed up for a a free trial of its premium service but didn’t continue to use the free service. Interestingly, the company also revealed that over half of its paying subscribers are under 30, which Spotify’s Ken Parks says is a “remarkable number of people who are generally hard to monetize.”

Tweet from anywhere on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with TwitkaFly [jailbreak apps]
Twitkafly allows you to tweet from virtually anywhere with a quick swipe or tap on your jailbroken iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. It isn’t bogged down with too many buttons or cheesy graphics.

TwitkaFly allows you to tweet from virtually anywhere with a quick swipe or tap on your jailbroken iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. It will add a Twitter shortcut to your notification center pull down and allow you to program a quick gesture for composing straight through Activator. The interface is clean and very iOS 5 like. It isn’t bogged down with too many buttons or cheesy graphics either.

The utility supports the following features –

  • Tweet right from anywhere using Activator
  • QuickReply to Twitter, Tweetbot, and Tweetings push notifications
  • Retweet tweets
  • Tweet Photo
  • Open links from tweets
  • Custom animations/transitions
  • Amazing notification UI
  • Tweet #NowPlayingTrack
  • Landscape mode in iPad
  • 100% retina display support
  • Blacklist users and more

Twitkafly ties into your existing Twitter app so you can handle notifications through it once you choose your client through Settings. Currently TwitkaFly supports the official Twitter app, Tweetbot, and Tweetings. I’m assuming more clients will eventually be added. It’s compatible with any iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 4 or higher. The only issue I’ve had so far is when I link it with Tweetbot. Whenever I click a notification it re-springs my device. If I link it with Twitter or Tweetings, it works fine. Hopefully that’s just a bug that’ll be hammered out pretty quickly.

If you’re using LockInfo or IntelliscreenX you shouldn’t have any compatibility issues and it should just tie straight into your existing notification program. You’ll just notice the addition of a QuickTweet button in the bottom left or right hand corner of notification center.

TwitkaFly is already available for purchase in Cydia. They’ve got a lite version available for free and a paid version for $1.99. Hit the link below to check it out and then let us know what you think! You can also check out more jailbreak apps and utilities in our apps, hacks, and themes forum.

windows 8 app store

Windows 8 images continue to leak onto the Internet, despite Microsoft’s wallpaper-based pleas to those with access to the early releases. Today’s installment courtesy CNBeta shows the upcoming Windows App Store, which will likely feature prominently in Windows 8.

We’ve got our doubts about the authenticity of the image. In addition to showing several of the built-in games which already ship with Windows, Opera is listed — and a competing browser seems like an odd inclusion this early on. Of course, with the browser ballot still in place in the EU for quite some time, Microsoft would probably need to include rivals like Opera and Firefox to stay out of trouble. We’re also not sure why Clickgamer is shown beneath Angry Birds instead of Rovio — the game’s actual publisher.

It’s still early, of course, so it’s entirely possible that the Windows App Store image is genuine but merely using placeholder images and text for now. Anyone else thinking Windows Marketplace might be a more logical name? You know, to keep things consistent with Windows Phone and keep Apple’s legal eagles at bay.

Microsoft is planning to bring Xbox Live to Apple iPhone and iPad
Microsoft is planning to bring more Xbox Live experiences to Apple’s iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, as well as Google’s Android platform.

Microsoft is planning to bring more Xbox Live gaming to Apple’s iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, as well as Google’s Android platform.

“While the Xbox Live experiences and games always work best on the Windows platform, we understand that some Xbox fans may be using other types of devices. To satisfy that need, we are working to extend a few of our Xbox experiences and titles to other platforms.”

All of Microsoft’s current XBox efforts have done well on iOS and Microsoft isn’t exactly a company to leave to money on the table or avoid recognition, it’s another avenue for both of those things if Microsoft puts the effort into it. No mention was made of when we could expect to see these efforts put into to place but if we had to wager a guess, we’d bet it’s not all that far off.

Given that Microsoft’s Windows Phone is still — as some would say — ‘ramping up’, it only seems logical that Microsoft would target iOS and Android users as well, especially considering the market share Apple and Google have in the mobile space.

Microsoft has already made a small foray on iOS with the release of My XBox Live and Kinectimals, but who knows what could be next. Halo, anyone?

PlayStation One games on the Android Market

If you’re lucky enough to own an Xperia Play — Sony Ericsson’s new Gingerbread-powered smartphone-cum-gamepad — you can now buy PlayStation (PSX) titles from the Android Market.

There are five titles currently available, all priced at £3.99: Syphon Filter, MediEvil, Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, and Jumping Flash. They don’t have an American price yet, but that will surely change once the Xperia Play launches in the States.

Two important questions remain unanswered: How big are these games? The Market descriptions say the games are only 5MB, but that sounds incredibly unlikely — and more importantly, will it be possible to ‘spoof’ the Xperia Play and download PSX games onto other Gingerbread-powered phones, like the Nexus S?

In other news, the PlayStation emulator PSX4droid was recently removed from the Android Market. This obviously has nothing to do with today’s release of first-party PlayStation games.

battlepaint

In BattlePaint, you play a cube. In fact, you’re not even a cube — just a square. But boy, are you fast! And you can shoot in all directions. That’s important, because there are baddies coming in from all over the place.

The “baddies” are swarms of other squares, in all sorts of pretty colors. They track you all over the screen, and you run around very quickly and just shoot, shoot, and shoot some more. If that doesn’t sound very emotionally deep, it’s because it isn’t. But it’s fun!

After you shoot a baddy, it splashes paint as it disappears. You need to skate across this blob of paint and “eat it up” to get points. This game is fast. It clocked in at around 60-70 FPS on my system, and was loads of fun to play. It does tend to insult you when you die, though, but don’t be offended — I don’t think it’s personal.

Here at Macworld 2012, Western Digital demoed a preview of their essentially finished, yet not final, MyBook Thunderbolt Duo. Scheduled to ship in Q1 for an “aggressive price,” the unit plays host to two 3.5-inch drives, which’ll come stuffed from the factory in either 4TB (2x 2TB) or 6TB (3x 3TB) configurations. On the outside, you’re looking at the MyBook aesthetic you either love or loathe, but around back you’ll find all connectivity has been gutted, save for power and two Thunderbolt ports. The latter means that up to six can be daisy-chained off one interconnect, which when setup in RAID 0 equate rather speedy transfers, like 700MB/sec reads and 500MB/sec writes in the four-unit demonstration configuration we toyed with. And it’s future proof too, as there’s a door up-top which enables plebes to swap drives should the need arise. We’ll keep an ear out for pricing, but until that day arrives, peep them in the gallery below, or in video form after the break.

  • Waves: Make your icons move in waves (vertical and horizontal)

You can use these settings alone, or in combinations.

Apple hiring new chip specialists in Isreal

Calcalist reports that Apple is hiring a number of chip experts to fill up their new Isreali research center — the one aimed at developing new chip configurations that could help power future iPhone and iPad devices.

The company reportedly received “several hundred resumes” for various engineering positions. Specifically, Apple is seeking hardware engineers in chip development with strong emphasis on electrical circuits, analogue and hardware testing and verification.

News that Apple was interested in opening an Israeli research facility first surfaced back in December. Rumor had it they were interested in being in close proximity to the Technion Institute of Technology, an area already home to Intel, Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Qualcomm.

According to this new report, Apple’s recent acquisition of flash-storage wizards, Anobit has nothing to do with this new research facility. Instead these new specialists will focus on research and development of silicon, chip circuitry and hardware testing/verification.

The new facility should be up and running by the end of February, however it is unlikely we’ll see new chip technology from these R&D efforts in the next iPhone or iPad given the lead time required.

Konstruct generative augmented reality art for iOS

If you have an artistic temperament, but you weren’t blessed with steady hands or an eye for color, Konstruct might be the app for you. Not only does the iPhone app let you produce generative art using words, warbles and whistles, but it also uses augmented reality to bring your artistic creation to life.

To get started, you first need to print out the Konstruct marker and place it wherever you’d like to create your AR sculpture — it could be on your living room wall, or on the floor of your bathroom, it doesn’t matter. Open the app, point your iPhone at the marker, and start making some noises! Once you’re done, you can save your creation, or simply wipe the slate clean and start again.

The volume of your voice affects the size of the shapes that are drawn on the screen, and you can move your head around to alter the path of your ‘brush’ — but to change the shape of your brush or modify the color palette you have to use a menu. Without knowledge of the app’s internal workings, it’s hard to say what the actual difference between whistling, talking and singing is — and judging by the developer’s affinity for whistling in the demo video (after the break), the app probably doesn’t perform that much analysis on your input.

Still, Konstruct is just a prototype! A later version could do away with menus and rely entirely on the location, tonality, quality and amplitude of your voice — and judging by the the words of the developer, James Alliban, there is definitely more in store for Konstruct: “The idea of transforming entire cities into user generated virtual art galleries really appeals to me. I see Konstruct as an early prototype that will hopefully be realised in this form in the future.”

Download Konstruct for free from the App Store (iPhone 3GS and 4 only)

opera 11.10

The crew in Oslo keeps plugging away at Opera 11.10, and the latest snapshot build includes a number of improvements to Opera’s built-in email client — as well as HTML5-related additions.

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail — such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.

Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.

You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.

Update: The Opera 11.10 RC is now available, as pointed out by SlashZaku in the comments. Thanks!

The developer of iCab Mobile, a feature-rich alternative to the Safari Web browser on iPad and iPhone, has been ordered by Apple to remove its ability to download and install JavaScript modules.

Presumably it’s not the fact that iCab can execute JavaScript that’s causing Apple to apoplectically puff and splutter, but rather its ability to download modules. Both Apple and Google frown upon apps that contain market-like functionality, and someone at Apple probably thought that iCab’s JavaScript modules looked like a bit too much like discrete apps.

Alexander Clauss, iCab’s developer, has rather a lot to say on the matter. “Maybe if I would have called the modules ‘smart bookmarks’ and would have made installing them much more complicated, Apple would have never asked to remove the ability to download them from the internet. The great user experience of installing modules has probably created a suspicion that these modules are more than just a piece of JavaScript code. From a pure technical point of view, if Apple does not allow to download modules (JavaScript code), Apple would also have to disallow to load web pages in general, because these do also contain JavaScript code.”

In conclusion, to circumvent Apple’s draconian decree, iCab Mobile now simply comes bundled with some 20 JavaScript modules. The ability to download modules made by third-party developers has been disabled, however — but even then, Clauss says that you can simply contact him and ask for your module to be bundled with the next version of iCab.

As SOPA‘s aftershocks continue to ripple across the US, a slightly different brand of techno-political drama is unfolding over in Europe, where the European Commission today announced a new set of online privacy regulations. The new legislation, unveiled this morning, was crafted with the intent of giving consumers more control over their online data, and places more pressure upon private companies to protect user information. According to Reuters, offending firms could be fined at rates of up to two percent of their yearly turnover. The laws, designed to overhaul the 1995 Data Protection Directive, will also make it easier for users to access their data, giving them the power to demand that their personal information be deleted, as long as there are no “legitimate reasons” for a company to store it. Companies, meanwhile, will be required to inform authorities of a data breach as soon as possible, “if feasible, within 24 hours.”

Though the rules have raised some concerns among web companies, EC privacy commissioner Viviane Reding wasted no time in heralding them as the foundation of a safer and more prosperous digital environment. “The protection of personal data is a fundamental right for all Europeans, but citizens do not always feel in full control of their personal data,” Reding explained. “A strong, clear and uniform legal framework at EU level will help to unleash the potential of the digital single market and foster economic growth, innovation and job creation.” If approved by the European Parliament and all EU member states, the laws would probably go into effect toward the end of 2013.

What would you do with $97 billion in the Apple bank? [Giveaway]

Following their Q1 2012 results, Apple now has a staggering, mind-boggling, almost unbelievable $97 billion dollars in the bank. That’s cash reserves bigger than most other companies and countries… combined. That’s a money bin even Scrooge McDuck could drown in.

What would you do if it were your money? Return it to the shareholders? (Pfft, what fun is that?) Buy all of Apple’s competitors? Buy a Hollywood studio or carrier network? Buy your own subcontinent? Buy the moon? Or just blow it all on candy and dancers?

Seriously — or at least as seriously as such a question could be posed! — what would you do with Apple’s $97 billion in the bank?

Leave a comment below with your best, most comedic, most tragic, most utterly entertaining answer and you’ll be entered to win a $97 gift certificate for the iMore Store. (Yeah, $97 dollars, not $97 billion — we’re not made of Apple bucks!) Contest starts now and ends Sunday, Jan. 29 at midnight PT.

Acer Iconia A200 review

Acer's got a decent affordable Android tablet here, but the shortcuts are apparent

Acer Iconia Tab A200

Meet the Acer Iconia Tab A200. We've seen a lot of Android tablets in the past year or so. A lot of Honeycomb tablets. And let's be perfectly frank here — after a while they can start to look a lot alike. And so we're a wee bit surprised that we're as enamored as we are with the Iconia A200. On one hand, it's more of the same. The specs are familiar. The form factor's familiar. The software is relatively unchanged.

But Acer's tweaked and nipped and tucked, and it's produced a solid tablet that looks good, feels good and, most important, doesn't do a number on your wallet.

So join us after the break for our Acer Iconia Tab A200 review.

The Good

Feels great in the hand, includes a full-size USB port and HDMI out. Gets rid of the rear camera.

The Bad

Gets rid of the rear camera, and the front camera is horrific. Door hiding the microSD slot is nearly impossible to open. Awaiting an update to Ice Cream Sandwich.

Conclusion

See what we did there with the camera thing? Maybe you'll miss it. Maybe you won't. Either way, Acer's come up with a tablet that falls in the middle of its Iconia range, but it just as easily feels like it could sit at the top.

Over on the Internet Explorer Blog, Microsoft has posted results from an extensive comparison of the top five Web browsers. The goal: to determine whether Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 4, Chrome 10, Safari 5, or Opera 11 is able to squeeze the most life out of your laptop’s battery.

A baseline was determined with test systems sitting idle, and then browsers were pointed at about:blank, a news site, the HTML5 Galactic demo, and the IE9 fish tank demo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, IE9 came out on top — though Firefox 4 was a very close second on nearly every test. As you can see, the other browsers didn’t necessarily fare quite as well, with Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera all posting significantly worse scores. In Opera 11′s case, a laptop battery would last over one hour more with Internet Explorer 9 installed.

But what we’d really like to know is where did Microsoft find the dilithium crystals required to run a Galactic Total Power Consumption test…

IE9 and Firefox 4 post top marks in Web browser power use comparison originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 07:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

TapDeWiggle ModGet ready to bring in some new jailbreak tweaks for your iPhone Homescreen. Considered to be one of the most favourite and visible zone of the iPhone, it also calls for creative modulation.  Presenting to you the latest jailbreak tweaks from Cydia and interestingly both have something to do with the Homescreen.

Exit Wiggle Mode with ‘Jailbreak Tweak’ TapDeWiggle

This new jailbreak tweak made available in Cydia allows you to exit wiggle mode without having to press the Home button. Here, all you need to do is just touch any empty space and end the jiggling and wiggling of the app icons promptly. So, TapDeWiggle proves to highly beneficial in case the Home button in any (given) case ceases to work. It is pretty obvious for anyone using the iPhone that it is unimaginable to do without a working Home button.

However, the ‘jailbreak tweak’ TapDeWiggle offers the perfect solution for such an erroneous situation. TapDeWiggle allows iPhones users to bypass the physical button when it comes to leaving wiggle mode behind. You can currently download TapDeWiggle for free from the Cydia Store.

‘Jailbreak Tweak’ SpringPod – Adding Individual Music Controls to your Home screen

You might at the first instance say that there is nothing new when we say that you can ‘add individual music controls to your Home screen in the form of app icons’, mainly for jailbroken iPhones. However, SpringPod brings this jailbreak tweak with a difference – a different approach and some more enhanced customization options to the table.

Here SpringPod, along with play/pause controls brings previous, next, rewind, fast forward, and volume functions directly to your iPhone’s Springboard. In short, this jailbreak tweak available at the Cydia Store for just $0.99 is the perfect option for all those who enjoys music. SpringPod offers you some exciting options like the capability to theme the music controls with three built-in theme layouts. It also features Activator options for bringing up certain details about your ‘now playing’ track.

SpringPod can be an asset for quick and easy control of your Music app by using the buttons in the multitasking tray. It especially proves to be useful if you’re listening to music in the background while you use other apps on your iOS device or in case of a faulty Home button.

What do you think about these jailbreak tweaks? Would you like to have them for your jailbroken iPhones?

Sprint Epic 4G Touch update

Sprint today is rolling out the EL29 update for the Epic 4G Touch (aka the Samsung Galaxy S II). This is the update we first told you about a week ago when the source code dropped. And today, the update has begun to push out to devices. Here's the official changelog:

  • Security update
  • Dismissing multiple calendar alerts
  • Commercial Alert System (CMAS) activated

The Epic 4G Touch update — officially to software version S:D710.0.5S.EL29, if you're into that sort of thing — will be released in stages, Sprint says, with all devices scheduled to receive it within the next 10 days or so.

We're also expecting the Carrier IQ software to have been stripped from this update, and that may be included in the "Security update" bullet point. (But why not just come out and say it?) Sprint previously announced that it has quit using Carrier IQ for analytics data after a couple of months of user outrage, and we've already seen Sprint remove the softare from its HTC ROMs.

To get the update for your Epic 4G Touch, just look for the notification in the aptly named notification bar, then send things on their way. Or if you've told it to install later, head to menu>settings>about phone>system updates>update Android to get things going.

UK network O2 apologizes for disclosing phone numbers to websites
Earlier today, we posted a report from TNW that showed UK carrier O2, had been transmitting phone numbers to every website visited via their 2G or 3G network.

Earlier today, we posted a report from TNW that showed UK carrier O2, had been transmitting phone numbers to every website visited via their 2G or 3G network.

After the backlash on Twitter, O2 acknowledged and fixed the issue at 2pm GMT today, followed by an apology on their blog, including a Q&A to explain exactly what happened and who was affected.

We have seen the report published this morning suggesting the potential for disclosure of customers’ mobile phone numbers to website owners. We investigated, identified and fixed it this afternoon. We would like to apologise for the concern we have caused.

The issue occurred after a routine maintenance update on January 10th, that accidentally sent user phone numbers to website hosts, along with the standard log of technical information required from the device.

Q: Why did this happen? A: Technical changes we implemented as part of routine maintenance had the unintended effect of making it possible in certain circumstances for website owners to see the mobile numbers of those browsing their site.

Technical information is normally sent to websites so that servers can deliver a ‘device-optimised’ experience. Carriers add your phone number to this information, when sending data to ‘trusted partners’, to enable services that require; age verification, premium-content billing, and carrier specific services.

It seems that O2 have fixed the problem now, but after 15 days… is it too little, too late?

It’s still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple’s mobile platform. And it’s even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple’s tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you’re searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as “touch and decide,” Bing Voice Search is also built in — making it easy to start a query without using the iPad’s on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

  • 2 Exclusive Levels - Two exclusive levels build specifically for smartphones using the accelerometer.
  • New Moves - All of Sonic's classic moves are available, including the newer Homing Attack which will add a new level of control and excitement.
  • Classic Sonic Stages - Race through 4 unique zones containing 4 acts each as well as 7 special stages.
  • Special Stages Return - A staple of the Genesis-era games, the special stages return allowing fans to collect the 7 Chaos Emeralds and unlock Super Sonic.
  • Revamped Classic Boss Battles - Dr. Eggman returns with new and improved mechas and will go berserk when he accumulates damage.

The previous release Sonic CD, was a great port for Android users and from the looks of it – Sonic 4 Episode 1 will fit that bill as well. It's available right now in the Android Market for $4 — download link can be found past the break for you all. Once you play through it, you can take satisfaction in knowing Episode 2 isn't that far off.

Motorola to continue pushing 'smart actions', wants to make you look cleverer

Motorola’s automated smartphone rule system first appeared on its Droid Razr; a way of sidestepping laborious menu hopping for everyday tweaks and extra functionality — with some location-based awareness thrown in. Motorola’s senior VP, Alain Mutricy, recently announced that the company plans to continue the roll-out of this smart actions system, presumably on its Razr series, which will also see further expansion this year. The VP added that Motorola will focus on its high-end hands in the US, continuing to roll-out LTE capable handsets. Moto’s earnings report will arrive soon and should set the stage for whatever else its new owners are plotting for 2012.

Samsung cracks open Galaxy Note, reveals tabletphone components within

Galaxy Note teardown

Usually we have to wait for some brave individual to take screwdrivers, spudgers and the like to a device before we get to see what's lurking inside. This time, however, Samsung's saved you the trouble of voiding your warranty and being left with a heap of broken circuitry, with an official teardown of the Galaxy Note, its unique phone/tablet hybrid.

If you've never looked inside one of these things before, it's always amazing how so much "stuff" is packed within a (relatively) small device. In the case of the Galaxy Note, the S-Pen stylus integration requires a special digitizer to detect the pen's presence and the amount of pressure, as well as a WACOM chip to process pen input.

Hit the source link for a more detailed breakdown of what's inside the Galaxy Note, or check out our full review for more on the device itself.

Now that its famed light field camera has finally become official, Lytro is looking to the future, with an eye, apparently, toward the cellphone market. During a recent interview with PC World, Lytro executive chairman Charles Chi described his company’s new sensor in greater detail, and talked at length about its purportedly superior battery life. He also divulged a few hints about Lytro’s roadmap. When asked whether the firm would ever license its technology to a smartphone manufacturer, Chi confirmed that Lytro has “the capital to do that, the capability in the company to do that, and… the vision to execute,” before launching into an explanation of what it would take for such an initiative to succeed:

If we were to apply the technology in smartphones, that ecosystem is, of course, very complex, with some very large players there. It’s an industry that’s very different and driven based on operational excellence. For us to compete in there, we’d have to be a very different kind of company. So if we were to enter that space, it would definitely be through a partnership and a codevelopment of the technology, and ultimately some kind of licensing with the appropriate partner.

Far from a confirmation, to be sure, but it seems like the handset market is at least on Lytro’s radar. Read the full Q&A at the link below.

MIT and Google open-source App Inventor code, public release of MIT’s version on track for April

MIT

You guys probably know this by now, but I was a fan of App Inventor.  Watching my wife use it to create her own application just sucked me in, and I loved the whole idea of a way for anyone to make an Android app.  When we heard that Google was shutting it down, I was sad, but the news that MIT was going to pick up the pieces and run with it lifted my spirits again.  Recent news makes me even happier — MIT and Google have released the full source-code for the service, and folks at MIT's Center for Mobile Learning have said that the public release of the re-vamped service is on track for an April release:

So far (knock on wood) our development effort is on track for releasing the MIT Public App Inventor Service in the first quarter of this year. While unexpected issues can always arise, we're guardedly optimistic that people who plan to run App Inventor courses or workshops can anticipate being able to use the MIT service by mid-April.

With the release of the source and the JAR files you have the choice of running your own local copy, or jumping in and using MIT's version once it goes live.  See the links below for more information, and remember us if you give it a try and come up with your own app — we'd love to check it out!

So this professor comes up with a new toilet cleaner that works by “eating” the dirt; or so he thinks. That’s how the plot starts for Tasty Planet. You play the role of the toilet cleaner, but you’re not really a toilet cleaner after all — you’re a blob of gray goo that can eat anything that’s smaller than yourself.

As you chomp away, you grow — and as you grow, you can eat bigger and bigger stuff. The first level pits you against microscopic particles; by the time I stopped playing, I got all the way to eating cats and dogs. I know that sounds disturbing, but it’s a really cute game, and there’s no gore or anything like that.

Supposedly you keep growing and growing until you’re able to eat whole planets (hence the name). The challenge factor comes when you realize you can’t touch any critter larger than yourself – you’ll get “bitten” and become smaller. In the beginning you’re so small, that a single touch can kill you. Later on, you’re big enough that touching larger animals doesn’t kill you on the spot, but it does reduce your size. Each level is timed, so if you’re not large enough by the time your clock runs out, you need to start again. As long as you don’t touch the larger animals, you should be fine.

All in all, a fun, addictive little game. It’s available for iOS, too.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 making an appearance on the London Eye

Android Central

The London Eye has been given a little taste of Android. Each capsule on the giant big-wheel that towers over the city has been given a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

In partnership with the current sponsors of the tourist attraction, each Tab has been pre-installed with a custom app giving you an interactive guide of the scenery. We'd love to be able to show you this in all its glory, but there's not many images floating around at this point.

Maybe it's time to head down to London again. Wonder if you can play Angry Birds while you're up there?

Firefox 4 save tabs

When Firefox 4′s tab grouping tool, Panorama, had its keyboard shortcut changed to the finger-breaking combo of Ctrl+Shift+E, we thought Panorama would get dropped before FF4′s final release — but, thankfully, it made the cut!

If you’ve used Firefox 4 and Panorama, you might have noticed that Mozilla’s new browser doesn’t always save your tab groupings when you close the browser — a bit of a pain, if you spend a long time setting up the perfect groups! This is tied into the removal of the ‘Save and Quit’ dialog box — and enabling Panorama tab group saving is just a matter of re-enabling the Save and Quit dialog.

Open a new tab and head to about:config. Click through the warning and type ‘quit’ into the filter box. Double click browser.showQuitWarning to change its value to true (see image after the break). That’s it — now you’ll have the option of saving your tabs, and thus tab groups, when you close Firefox.

Evernote for Android – Now with auto-titles, improved layout, save and continue

Evernote

Evernote is in the process of rolling out the latest iteration of their popular Android app. Today's update will push Evernote into v3.5, and it brings along plenty of changes as well. So what's new? We'll tell you as it was told to us:

  • Auto titles – There are times when you need to remember something on the go — a fast snapshot or a quick voice memo. Evernote is great for that. The problem was, how to find those notes later? In this update, we’ve come up with a great solution: auto-titles for untitled notes. Now, Evernote will create a title based on the content of the note and time that the note was created, making it much easier to find it later.
  • Improved image layout in notes - We’ve also made some improvements to how snapshots appear inside your notes. There is now padding around images, so if a note contains several images, they show up nicely spaced and easier to view. As always, if you tap on an image, you can view it in full-screen view. A long tap lets you annotate it in Skitch.
  • Save anytime - If you compose lengthy notes on your phone or tablet, then you’ll like our new Save feature. Tap the Save button in the note and a version will be saved to your device’s memory. No need to exit the note. When you’re finished, tap Done and the note will Sync.

Those are some pretty nice changes and personally, I'm glad to see the auto titles option added. I have countless notes in Evernote already named "Untitled" but better late then never to have implemented it. Also, remember — Evernote integrates amazingly well with Skitch so be sure to grab that as well if you haven't already.

Apple touts 85 million iCloud customers, sets service as strategy for next decade
Apple made their predictably astronomical financial statements tonight, but one tidbit in particular stuck out – their emphasis on iCloud.

Apple made their predictably astronomical financial statements tonight, but one tidbit in particular stuck out – their emphasis on iCloud and its 85 million customers. Specifically, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that iCloud isn’t a product, it’s their strategy for the next decade.

iCloud is still relatively new, having launched with iOS 5 last summer as a replacement of MobileMe. It’s a bit more involved, and offers a lot more in terms of functionality, which you can see in our full iOS 5 walkthrough. It’s interesting to hear Apple positioning the service as such a high priority, but  since they’ve pretty much owned the hardware game for the last couple of years, it’s the next logical place to go. Having full-bodied services back them up will only serve to cement the iPhone and iPad as leading mobile devices.

Quick show of hands – how many of you actively use iCloud on a regular basis? How many of you sign up for it and forget you have it?

For the financial nitty-gritty of Apple’s quarterly results, the PDF report for their Q1 2012 can be found here.

Tokyoflash Kisai Optical Illusion watch is more than meets the eye, smells like teen spirit

Back in the mid-90s, Magic Eye had a brief reign as the monger of stereogram cool — you know, those hidden 3D images you could only see with crossed vision. While the flames of that mini-craze mercifully died out, it appears some diehard, grunge-era revivalist over at Tokyoflash is prepping a wrist piece comeback for the low-tech made notorious by Mallrats. Reincarnated as the Kisai Optical Illusion, this concept-to-design LCD watch incorporates high-resolution diagonal lines on its touch screen display that reveal the time to trained eyes. But if your peepers are out of practice, don’t worry, there’s also a handy shortcut button that ought to clarify things a bit. As with all of the outfit’s pretty, but pointless chronological kit, this particular limited edition model will retail for $179 as part of a special two-day sale, after which it’ll jump to $199. Like what you can’t see? Then bust out the flannel, lace up those Docs and prepare your plastic for processing when this digital ticker hits virtual shelves.

Apple TV doing well, 2.8 million sold last year with record sales in December
Apple’s Q1 2012 results have now been announced and to no one’s surprise, it was another record breaking quarter.

As part of Apple’s record breaking Q1 2012 financial results, Apple CEO Tim Cook took the time to break out Apple TV numbers — 2.8 million sold last year with half of those sales, 1.4 million, coming in the last quarter.

Cook insisted that Apple TV is still a hobby for Apple and while there was pressure to comment on the Apple iTV Television rumors, Cook managed to dodge his way around those questions simply by stating there was nothing else to talk about in that area. Of course, that’s what Apple said about phones and tablets, once upon a time.

Totally avoided by analysts and Apple execs alike — Apple TV 3 rumors. Where’s our Apple A5 powered, 1080p update already?

It seems like only yesterday Apple unveiled iCloud to the world at WWDC, just a puff of vapor. Now look at it. The company has just confirmed the service has swelled to 85 million users as part of its Q1 2012 earnings call. That’s more than twice as many iPhones as it sold in the same period, but of course it’s worth noting that iCloud is, of course, free, so there’s no penalty in people sticking their head in and seeing how things feel.

New ‘Experiments’ Gmail feature discovered in Android 4.0.3

Android Central

The Android 4.0.3 update for the Asus Transformer Prime brought with it some improvements to the Google Apps. However small any changes may be, nestled among them the Gmail application has received an interesting new feature menu known as "Experiments."

Experiments at the moment consists of a couple of new features which are probably not quite ready for the prime-time.

The first of these, enables full text search. Pretty straight forward this one, but still pretty useful. It allows you to index an entire message to search for keywords.

The second may not be immediately obvious as to its function. The contact chip is bascially the name entered into the To, Cc, and Bcc fields when composing a new message. Enabling this function allows you to long press on one of these contact chips, and simply drag and drop to another box.

At the moment, the updated Gmail app is rolling out with Android 4.0.3. But, enter the Android community, as the apk has been extracted from the Prime and is working just fine on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. It has been tried on Honeycomb, but ran into some nasty force close issues meaning this is purely for Ice Cream Sandwich guys.

If you're keen to try it out for yourselves, hit the source link where you'll find a handy download.

A longstanding bone of contention when registering for a Google+ profile was that you were required to use your actual name. Google had gone so far as to delete entire accounts based on psuedonyms. But Google has finally decided to allow for these nicknames and other established identities to be used on Google+, which is definitely a huge plus for folks out there who have built themselves around the alternative identity. While they will still be watching over the nicknames, and have restrictions put in place, this is definitely a huge step in the right direction.

It's been approximately 254 days since (give or take) the last 3D-capable Android smartphone was announced. Two hundred fifty-four glorious days of not squinting, not forcing 3D pictures on our friends and family.

There's a good chance that in a month, we'll see that 3D-less streak come to an end. A new render of a 3D LG device — possibly to be dubbed the Optimus 3D 2 (awkward) or the LG CX2 (only slightly less awkward) — has come from Pocketnow. You can see the stereoscopic cameras — as in two of them — buried beneath that watermark, and indeed it would surprise us not one bit to see it unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Specs are a tad better than the original Optimus 3D (read our full review), with a 4.3-inch NOVA display powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor. DLNA, NFC and other standard smartphone specs are said to be tucked in there as well.

Oplab

After finally getting the OP-1 up for order last January, Teenage Engineering is getting its second product to market — Oplab. The latest offering is meant to compliment its slick synth, but we can see plenty people falling in love with it on its own. The Oplab is a tinker kit and DIY platform, akin to Arduino or Microsoft’s .NET Gadgeteer, but designed explicitly for generating and manipulating sound. The main board, which retails for $299, is home to a trio of USB ports (two of them hosts), three MIDI connections (one in, one out and one sync) and a pair of CV in and CV out jacks. There’s also a bank of switches for changing settings and a host of connectors for plugging in various sensors. The Swedish company is offering a number of add-ons for $49 apiece: an accelerometer (Flip), a piezo microphone (Tap) and a pressure sensor (Poke). Strangely enough, there’s also a $149 a sneaker that has a rubber pouch that you can slip one of the aforementioned sensors into. Hit up the source link for more details and to order yours now.

When driving, moving around, traveling, or simply riding in a car, things can get hectic, and distractions abound. If you’re driving you don’t want to take your eyes off the road in order to move forward with typing or utilizing your ipad in anyway. In some states doing so could result in a hefty fine and ticket, which is bad news no matter how you slice it. Getting moving forward with a way to make sure that you can use the navigation, or any other option from your device while driving or riding around, is as simple as looking into an iPad headrest mount. This allows passengers to be able to work, or let passengers watch their favorite programs without having to annoy the driver or have them continually switch through content in order to get things done. This type of problem is often times a leading cause in some accidents, as distracted driving is something that plagues the roads in these modern times.

Instead of spending money trying to mount television monitors into the seats, or having to upgrade all sorts of electronics for your vehicle, you can simply get a good headrest mount and stream all the media you want or play music with your latest gadget. When looking at the different options that you have to choose from, you’ll want to select one of the better reviewed options, so that you’re getting a high quality mount. Consider the following couple of peripherals that you can purchase today.

Arkon iPad Head Rest Mount with Custom Fit iPad Holder – This option is a great reviewed item that is under $40 and works quite well. It mounts easily on the head rest comes with a custom holder, and can be used by an adult or a child, as long as they know how to use the mighty gadget. The holder fits snug and is adjustable to fit most head rests without problems.

DBTech New iPad 2 Car Headrest Mount – This option can help you get entertainment to the riders and leave the driver alone under $20. This well reviewed option is great for backseats and the company guarantees that it fits all vehicles. Whether you have a minivan or a sedan, you’re in for a treat with this easy to use option.

The above two options are just a couple of the available models that you can look into. A good iPad headrest mount is an easy to use option that will replace the need for lugging around portable dvd players, television screens and much more. Try it once, and you’ll see how impressive this latest technology really is.

Google+ now allowing the use of nicknames and other established identities

Android Central

A longstanding bone of contention when registering for a Google+ profile was that you were required to use your actual name. Google had gone so far as to delete entire accounts based on psuedonyms. But Google has finally decided to allow for these nicknames and other established identities to be used on Google+, which is definitely a huge plus for folks out there who have built themselves around the alternative identity. While they will still be watching over the nicknames, and have restrictions put in place, this is definitely a huge step in the right direction.

Galaxy Nexus case review: Case-Mate Barely There case

Case-Mate Barely There Case for Galaxy Nexus

Case-Mate's "Barely There" series of cases has a reputation for offering a good level of protection against knocks and bumps, without turning your phone into a bulky, unpocketable brick. The latest Barely There case for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus continues this tradition, with a sturdy yet sleek design that covers the most vulnerable areas of the device.

The case has a soft touch finish all over, which means it feels great in the hand, and its sleek lines fit in well with the rounded design of the Galaxy Nexus. As you'd expect from a premium case, you also get cut-outs for all your major ports and buttons, including the rear speakers and noise-cancelling microphones. While it doesn't provide all-over protection, the Barely There case for the Galaxy Nexus strikes a good balance between protection and aesthetics. One particularly useful feature is the raised lip around the left and right edges, which raises the device up slightly when it's laid flat, protecting the screen from scratches.

The Case-Mate Barely There case fits both the Verizon LTE Galaxy Nexus and  international GSM version, so whichever model you have, you'll be good to go.

We've got more photos after the break.

It looks like Sony’s been reading our daily email missives, bemoaning the state of its PlayStation certified gaming selection. The message appears to be getting through, with several PSP titles getting spotted over at the Entertainment Software Rating Board with PlayStation certification. Ahead of any official fanfare, there’s no big hitters here just yet, but titles like Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror and Daxter are likely to be more resonant with gamers than the pitiful offering we’ve seen so far from its PS Store app. Alongside Syphon Filter and Daxter, PS3 port Fl0w and Pinball Heroes were also spotted getting their contents okayed by the ESRB. Unsurprisingly, there’s no detail here on release dates or technical requirements — something that we reckon could be important, given the technical gap between the Xperia Play and the dual-cored innards of Sony’s tablets. It’s also worth noting that Pinball Heroes is already available on the Tablet P. Sorry Sony, but we’d still trade all of what’s been leaked here for a portable version of the original Metal Gear Solid — without hesitation.

Firefox 4 racks up 25 million downloads in 3 days

If you’ve had your head under a rock for the last few days, here’s this week’s Firefox news in brief: Firefox 4 was finally released.

Yes, 13 months after the initial release of Firefox 3.7 alpha 1 and four more alpha builds, a renumbering to 4.0 and 12 beta releases, and finally a release candidate (or two), Firefox 4 has been released into the wild.

Just like every other Firefox release, initial reception for the new browser has been nothing short of insane. 7.1 million downloads were registered in the first 24 hours and the download rate continued to accelerate, clocking in more than 15 million downloads after two days. At the time of writing, three days in, Firefox 4 has been downloaded over 25 million times. In case you’re wondering, the United States accounts for 7 million of those downloads, just beating out Germany’s Firefox-downloads-per-capita.

But now that you’ve installed Firefox 4 (you have, right?), what do you do now? Well, obviously, in true Download Squad fashion, it’s time to tweak Firefox 4 using add-ons and about:config hacks!

First up is an add-on called Stratiform that lets you change every aspect of the Firefox 4 browser chrome — including the color of that orange button!

What if Apple had come to market with a Microsoft Surface-style multitouch table?

Imagine for a moment that Apple had come to market with a Microsoft Surface-style multitouch table, then take a look at these concept pictures of what it could have been. Forget workstations showing off blue screens of death, instead replace those thoughts with beautiful functional workspaces where placing your iOS device on the table could initiate an iTunes or iCloud sync.

The desk could sync with your Mac or potentially have a Mac built in, perhaps with a portion of the desk’s surface angled upward to serve as a display. Tactile keyboards could likewise be replaced by a digital touch-sensitive version (endlessly configurable to your preferences for individual apps), and any part of the desk’s surface could be cordoned off as a trackpad area. Files could be transferred easily between Macs, iPhones, iPads, and so on by sitting the devices on the desk and swiping file icons across its surface from one device to the other. Shared files could be passed between coworkers via digital inboxes, designated digital “trays” that collect documents sent from other iDesks. And of course, the desk would wirelessly sync to your iCloud account to keep calendars, contacts, and other data updated across all your gizmos.

Now wake up and stop dreaming! Unfortunately this is just an artist’s rendition created by designer Adam Benton. It is worth looking at as it may show what the future could hold in the workspace. If it turns out anything like these concept pictures then exciting times are ahead.

google voice search

Google Voice Search has just introduced localizations for Latin America, Indonesia and Malaysia, enabling native language search for hundreds of millions of users.

Google’s official blog post offers some interesting insights into the process of collecting and analyzing the speech data needed to expand support. Thousands of hours were spent gathering voice samples and choosing key regional accents to analyze, and International Program Manager Linne Ha is clearly very appreciative of the Google users who helped the company complete the expansion. Without an enthusiastic base of users to lend a hand, Google Voice Search’s polyglot powers would have been nearly impossible to deliver.

Could we see 802.11ac 5G gigabit Wi-Fi in iPhone and iPad in 2012?
802.11ac, sometimes referred to as 5G or gigabit Wi-Fi, hasn’t been finalized and Apple seldom if ever speaks ahead of time about the incorporation of new technology into the iPhone, iPad, or Mac lines, but they were aggressive in adopting 802.11n while it was in the draft stages and 802.11ac appears to have even more to recommend it.

The new 802.11ac standard achieves much faster wireless networking speeds than the existing 802.11n specification (in use on the latest Mac, AirPort and iOS devices) by using 2 to 4 times the frequency bandwidth (from 80 to 160MHz), more efficient data transfers through sophisticated modulation, and more antennas (up to 8; existing standards support up to 4, while Apple’s Macs currently use up to 3).

With everything from AirPlay to iTunes Wi-Fi sync to the downloading of content from iTunes Netflix and other online repositories becoming increasingly front and center in iOS, better, faster Wi-Fi will be huge plus. (Especially if when we see the eventual move to 1080p content on the rumored Apple TV 3.

The link below says Apple’s working on 802.11ac, though the article doesn’t say where that assertion comes from. Still — I want it, and hopefully we’ll indeed get it sometime this year if not the next.

Yahoo Messenger Big Brother censorshipWe’ve all thought it, but never dared think it could be true: what if Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL actively monitor our instant messenger chats? What if mentions of ‘bomb’ and ‘underage’ are tracked and sent to law enforcement agencies? What if chat providers don’t agree with the things we say, or the links we share, and filter or censor the content of our transmitted messages?

Well, it looks like our fears may actually have some basis in reality: Yahoo Messenger strips FilesTube links from instant messages. It doesn’t tell either party that a URL has been removed from chat — it just deletes it. Poof. FilesTube, in case you were wondering, is one of the largest file hosting meta search engines on the Web — it indexes RapidShare, Megaupload, Mediafire, and many other ‘cyberlocker’ services.

It’s fairly obvious why FilesTube links are being removed — the Censor General at Yahoo is probably one of those perplexed primates who think all uses of BitTorrent are illegal — but this situation poses a far more important question: is Yahoo censoring messages on the client side, or the server side. Does the messenger client itself maintain a list of ‘blacklisted’ words — and if so, why are we not told that FilesTube links are banned? What other words and terms does Yahoo protect us from?

Transportation

We're back for the second weekly Android Central photo contest, and this week's theme is transportation.  Anything that you use to get from point A to point B is fair game (see our example photo above), and we're looking forward to seeing another round of great pictures from you guys and gals.  Come Sunday, we'll pick the cream of the crop and show them all off (check out last week's finalists, they're amazing) — and the winner this week get's an extended battery from ShopAndroid.com for his or her phone so they can carry a bit of extra juice and take a few more pictures.  We've also adjusted the rules a little, so read the next bit carefully:

  • Pictures must be taken with an Android device.  Yes, your iPhone or DSLR takes great pictures, but we're all about Android here.
  • Only one picture per person.  If you send in more than one, even if it's the best one, you're disqualified.
  • Entries must be accompanied by the name of the phone (or tablet) used to take them, and the name you want used for photo credit should you make the final cut. In other words, we want to know which phone you used!
  • Photos must be sent as an attachement.  With so many entries, we just don't have time to visit your Picasa or Flickr album.

Pick out your best photo, and send it to pics@androidcentral.com.  Good luck to everyone!

burritobison

Burrito Bison is a pretty simple game, but if you’re into gummy bears you might find it addictive.

As you may have guessed from the name, you’re a bison (not a burrito, though). In the course of your day-to-day grocery shopping, you’re abducted into a bag of gummy bears, and must now fend for yourself.

At the beginning of each round you launch yourself onto the marching gummy (gummi?) bears, while you’re being watched by a huge crowd of even more gummy bears. Your goal is to keep bouncing on the bears and earn more and more money while you do it. Every time you hit a gummy bear, you lose some momentum. If you hit the floor, you basically lose all of it.

But don’t give up just yet! You have an emergency thrust which you can use to gain some momentum and keep bouncing on those bears. This extra thrust gets refilled as you hit more bears.

There are also special gummy bears that give you extra thrust or extra money. The money comes in handy at the end of each round, when you can shop for cool stuff to make your bison even more effective against those gummy bears.

It’s a fun and colorful game that kept my interest for quite some time, and almost sent me running to the closest store to get some gummy bears!

windows home server 2011 whs

Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft’s slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what’s new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft’s official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn’t resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that’s something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.

An evaluation download for Windows Home Server 2011 will be made available in April — we’ll let you know when the links are ready.

Same as the Mac version, the Absinthe tool enables untethered jailbreaking for iPhone 4S running on iOS 5.0/5.0.1 and iPad running on iOS 5.0.1. The tool is simple and the jailbreak process is very straightforward. But to cater for those who are new to jailbreaking, we’ll walk you through the whole jailbreak process.

Warning: This guide is for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 ONLY. If you’re looking for iPhone 3GS/iPhone 4 jailbreak guide, check out here. For jailbreak guide of the original iPad, you can check out here.

What You Need

Jailbreak Procedures Using Absinthe

Step 1: Make a backup of your iPhone 4S (or iPad 2) using iTunes. This ensures you can recover the data even jailbreak fails.

Step 2: Attach your iPhone 4S (or iPad 2) you wish to jailbreak to your computer via USB.

Note: Users who are using iPhone 4S and want a carrier unlock (e.g. ultrasn0w) should NOT update to iOS 5.0.1 and stay on iOS 5.0. You can apply the jailbreak staying on that firmware version. Also make sure to remove any passcodes or VPN settings you’ve set.

Step 3: Launch the Absinthe tool and press the jailbreak button after the device is detected.

Please use administrator mode to run Absinthe tool. You can right-click on the Absinthe tool and select “Run as administrator”.

Step 4:The Absinthe tool will go through various steps: Sending initial data, waiting for reboot, waiting for device to finish booting, Preparing jailbreak data, and Sending payload data. Just wait for a while and let the tool jailbreak your device.

Step 5: Once completed, an icon named “Absinthe” will appear on your device.

Tap on the icon and you will be redirected to greenpois0n.com which will install Cydia on your device replacing the Absinthe icon as shown in this image.

Note: In case you receive “error establishing a database connection” message, don’t panic. Just go to Settings > General > Network > VPN > On and retry.

Now your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 should be jailbroken with cydia installed. If you experience any problem, feel free to leave us comment below.

App for That: How to take passport photos with your iPhone

There are hundreds of thousands of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps for just about everything — so how come the one you need, the one you know just has to be there, is so hard to find? Enter TiPb’s new weekly feature where staff and readers alike sort through the App Store and help you find just the right App for That. This week, our very own Chris Oldroyd asks:

I need an app to produce passport compliant photographs for a new passport. Any ideas?

To see what we found for Chris, follow along after the break!

ID-Photo – Biometric passport/ID photos [$1.99 - App Store link] is and iPhone and iPad app for creating passport and identification photos. It knows the sizing requirements in 14 countries and will set up your photo to be printed at the legally required size.

When taking your photo, ID-Photo overlays guidelines onto the camera so that you can be certain that your photo will meet the requirement. It also lets you make adjustments to contrast, brightness, sharpening, and grayscale. Additionally, the app has a list of tips for taking your photo and examples of both acceptable and unacceptable photos.

Once you photo is prepared, it is very easy to email or print to an Airplay compatible printer. Just tell ID-Photo the paper size and it’ll take care of the rest!

Anyone else have any App for That suggestions for Chris? Let him — and all of us — know.

Having trouble finding what you need in the app store? Head on over to our App for That Forum and let us know what you’re looking for. The TiPb community will do our best to find you just the right App for That!

hp google cloud print

HP has become the first major OEM to deliver support for Google Cloud Print in retail-boxed printers. In an official release, HP announced that its ePrint-enabled printers are now fully Cloud Print compatible. Just sign in to your Google account, pick your HP ePrint device, and you’re ready to fire off a print job from anywhere you’ve got Internet access. Well, as long as your app supports Cloud Print as well — like Gmail and Google Docs, for example.

We’re curious, though — how many of you are still printing? Like our pals at Engadget, our printers have been mostly gathering dust for the last few years.
