AMD’s Trinity APU can do some remarkable things, but we still don’t know exactly what magic ingredients make its Piledriver cores superior to the tepidly received Bulldozer. Now though, a firm called Cyclos claims it’s supplying ‘resonant clock mesh’ power-saving technology for use in the new module. In speaking to the media, it’s revealed that this will help to enable a “4+ GHz” factory clock speed, which sounds high if it definitely refers to an integrated chip with low-power credentials. As for the resonant clock mesh itself, it’s a bit like KERS for processors: it recycles clock power instead of letting it dissipate and thereby enables higher clock speeds in “next generation SoCs that also require ultra-low power consumption.” We also know that the technology is financially backed by ARM and Siemens and has seen precious little implementation prior to AMD — which is fine, so long as all that resonance doesn’t make our rig hum even louder.

Nuance today announced that its popular Dragon Go! app for Android and iOS has been updated with direct access to travel website Expedia. Using the app's voice commands, users can now look up hotel reservations, current airfare, or user reviews for the thousands of listings available through Expedia. The travel site joins Dragon Go's already respectable content ecosystem, which includes Facebook, Fandango, Pandora, Spotify, and more. 

For those unfamiliar, Dragon Go! is Android's anti-Siri, using third-party content in its search results. Users can throw a number of different commands at the software, and Dragon Go! will use results from the content partner it deems fit. And for those embarrassed by telling their phones to "look up hotel prices in New York for this weekend" Dragon Go! also responds quite nicely to text input.

If you're still skeptical, you can check out Nuance's other Android apps, including Dragon Dictation and Swype, for an idea as to how the company's software works. If you've already got Dragon Go! installed on your device, watch out for notification about the recent addition of Expedia. You can hit the link below to grab Dragon Go! from the Android Market, unless of course you're running Ice Cream Sandwich, in which case you'll have to wait, as compatability is still listed as "coming soon."

EDIT: Ice Cream Sandwich users do have a way to snag their own working copy of Dragon Go!, though stopping by the Android Market won't help: you'll need to grab the latest Swype Beta, which comes with an integrated, Android 4.0-ready Dragon Go! build.

Shot Shot Pirate is very satisfying, because each level is short and to the point. You know what you have to do and you just do it.

As you may have gathered from the name, you’re cast in the role of a pirate. Your goal is to shoot at a diamond and make it fall off a tower of bricks. The height of the tower changes as you progress through the levels. It’s not enough to just make the diamond fall off the tower of bricks – it has to fall below a certain line (drawn on the screen) for the level to be completed.

There are also different kinds of bricks, with some heavier than others, and different kinds of ammo. You only get a certain amount of ammo for each level, and when it’s gone, you lose. But don’t worry! If you don’t make it on the first try, it’s very easy to restart the level and just give it another shot (or three).

All in all it’s a cute game. I’ve seen similar games with better graphics and music, but the game delivers on its main promise – a few minutes of pure time wasting!

You know those fridge magnet kits composed of a whole bunch of words? The ones you put all over your fridge door and then try to arrange into all sorts of juvenile and/or amusing sentences. Well, Farragomate is the social, webby version of that very same pastime.

You get to play with a bunch of random strangers in real-time, and make up sentences out of a pre-set collection of words, including some fairly naughty ones, and all players’ nicknames. As you can imagine, some of the results are not child-friendly.

There are ten rounds to a game. Once a round is done, players get to vote for their favorite sentence from that round. You can’t vote for your own creation, of course. There’s in-game chat, too.

I think the vocabulary could be made a bit more eclectic, but even as it is, it’s a nice way to spend a few minutes and meet random strangers on the Internet (always a thrilling experience).

Have you ever wondered what the Web was like before the Mosaic Web browser? If you were born in the last 20-odd years, or you only discovered your inner geek recently, did you miss out on monochrome monitors and the dial-up BBS era? Well, here’s your chance to get a sneak peek at history: grab the ChromeLite extension and marvel as the entire Web is transformed into ASCII characters.

Now, ChromeLite isn’t really all that functional. For the most part, it simply strips images and converts text into a monospaced terminal font. There are a few Easter eggs inserted — such as a fun message at the bottom of YouTube (image after the break) — and some fun ASCII art, but that’s about it. Rather oddly, most JavaScript continues to work — so you can still enjoy Google Instant Search!

ChromeLite was actually made by Google as an April Fools’ joke — and indeed, an annoying ‘you can uninstall this!’ message appears at the top of every page — but we’re kind of hoping that Google, or another developer, takes ChromeLite and turns it into a real ASCII browsing extension with configurable settings. If anything, it will provide an easy way to save bandwidth and CPU time.

We originally reported on SPDY way back in November 2009, when Google introduced it as yet another experiment in making the Web faster, like Go, Native Client and speculative pre-connections. Over the last 18 months, though, SPDY support has found its way into the stable build of Chrome.

SPDY is basically a streamlined and more efficient version of HTTP. At its most basic, SPDY introduces parallel, multiplexed streams over a single TCP connection — but at the same time, SPDY allows for prioritization, so that vital content (HTML) can be sent before periphery content (JavaScript, video). All in all, the SPDY protocol can halve page load times, which is obviously rather significant.

The best bit, though, is that SPDY is an open-source project. HTTP 1.1 is a lumbering beast that needs to be replaced before low-latency real-time computing really becomes a reality, and SPDY is one of the best options currently on the table. To be honest, we’re not sure why SPDY hasn’t received more coverage — it’s awesome in every way. At the moment, though, the only way to help speed up SPDY’s proliferation, is with an experimental Apache mod.

As far as actually ‘trying it out,’ your best bet is downloading Chrome, hitting up some Google sites, and then checking chrome://net-internals to see your active SPDY sessions. SPDY is a transparent replacement for HTTP, though, and as such it’s rather hard to see its effects. Google’s sites definitely feel fast in Chrome, but there are more technologies than just SPDY at work.

You’ve heard of singin’ in the rain (and have likely seen the movie). You may have even attempted it once or twice, but tableting in the midst of a downpour? That doesn’t exactly conjure the same whimsy and spontaneous dance numbers. Yet, Pantech’s making such joyous, on-the-go content consumption possible with the aptly named Element. It’s yet another addition to the growing stable of LTE devices propping up AT&T’s newly expanded 4G fort. Rather than run the risk of this being seen as another garden-variety Honeycomb tablet, though, Pantech’s imbued this guy with waterproofing.

Of course, that’s not all this skinned Android slate’s bringing to the party. With a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8060 CPU complemented by 1GB RAM, a 1024 x 768 TFT XGA display and a healthy 6,400mAh battery, this impermeable tab stands on equal spec footing with its post-PC peers. At $299 on two-year contract, it’s certainly priced to sell, but should you dish out the dollars for a middle-ground tablet from the likes of a lesser-known manufacturer? Does a limited and possibly frivolous imperviousness to water warrant your attention? Should you stash that plastic until Pantech confirms an ETA for that Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade? Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft’s slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what’s new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft’s official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn’t resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that’s something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.

One click; just one single well-aimed click. That’s all you get in Boomshine.

That single click triggers a chain reaction; circles start exploding, and other circles colliding with the shockwaves explode as well, creating their own shockwaves, which then catch other circles.

It’s been done before, yes, but this one is a great iteration. The soundtrack is mellow, with lots of piano and some nice percussion (not electronic – it sounds like drums).

At each level you need to make a certain number of circles explode to go on to the next level. I got up to level 12, where you get 60 circles and need to make 55 of them explode. And then I kept trying and trying, but simply couldn’t get it. I did get to 54 circles a couple of times, but as they say, you don’t get points for trying.

There’s no time limit, so you can carefully study the pattern of motion and place your click at the exact right place to create the best chain reaction. I’ve found that clicking near the middle of the screen works quite well, especially if the balls are slowly moving in that direction. By the time the first shockwave dies off, the oncoming balls usually hit it and the chain reaction continues.

The world of the E-Reader/Budget Android tablet is a battleground between Barnes and Noble and Amazon. The Nook Tablet is an excellent device with one key drawback. It costs $50 more than the Amazon Kindle Fire. The battle looks set to ignite once more though as there are apparent plans in place to launch an 8GB variant of the Nook Tablet. 

According to documents obtained by The Verge, Walmart will be launching this device at 12.01am, on Wednesday Feb. 22. The key in all this is with that reduced on-board storage, should come a reduced price. The 16GB Nook is priced at $249, so realistically we would expect an 8GB version to be priced similarly to the Kindle Fire. Wednesday isn't that far away, so we don't have too long to wait to find out.

Microsoft, citing Google’s tyrannical 95% share of the European search market, has lodged a formal complaint with the European Commission. It’s not like Microsoft is breaking any ground here — the European Commission has been investigating Google’s alleged violation of European competition law since November 2010 — but there’s no doubt that the addition of Microsoft’s gravitas will affect the proceedings.

Microsoft’s complaint reads like a sincere and plaintive cry for help against the Google Overlord. Microsoft lists no less than six damning reasons why Google’s behavior is anti-competitive — from Windows Phone 7′s incompatibility with YouTube, to its nefarious handling of Google Books — and finishes with a wide-eyed plea to the European Commission to please find Google guilty.

For those of you that have been following Microsoft’s own antitrust troubles over the last decade, don’t worry: MS is quick to point out the irony in the situation. “There of course will be some who will point out the irony in today’s filing. Having spent more than a decade wearing the shoe on the other foot with the European Commission, the filing of a formal antitrust complaint is not something we take lightly. This is the first time Microsoft Corporation has ever taken this step. More so than most, we recognize the importance of ensuring that competition laws remain balanced and that technology innovation moves forward.”

It sounds like Microsoft, having well and truly gone through the wringer, wants Google to be held similarly accountable. That’s fair enough, right?

It wasn’t all that long ago that we saw a student turn a tablet into a Braille writer, and now some researchers from Georgia Tech have done the same thing for smaller touchscreens, too. The Yellow Jackets produced a prototype app, called BrailleTouch, that has six keys to input letters using the Braille writing system and audio to confirm each letter as it’s entered. To use the app, you simply turn the phone face down, hold it in landscape mode and start typing. As you can see above, it’s currently running on an iPhone, but the researchers see it as a universal eyes-free texting app for any touchscreen. Early studies with people proficient in Braille writing show that typing on BrailleTouch is six times faster than other eyes-free texting solutions — up to 32 words per minute at 92 percent accuracy. GNOME 3, after more than two years of development, has been released into the wild. GNOME 3 is not merely the logical successor of GNOME 2: it is an entirely new project, started from scratch, to create a “completely new, modern desktop designed for today’s users and technologies.”

The best way to check out GNOME 3′s new features — and it has lots of new features — is to run a live version of openSUSE or Fedora, or simply head over to the GNOME 3 website and watch the (rather pretty) introductory videos. If you want a synopsis, though, here it is: GNOME 3 looks a lot like Mac OS X, with a healthy dollop of iOSesqueness for good measure, but yet it still somehow retains an underlying feel of Linux.

The overall aesthetic is very simple, very elegant, and despite being slightly out of fashion, there are plenty of rounded corners, too. The main addition, workflow-wise, is the addition of an app-launcher-cum-alt-tab screen, where you can launch apps, or flip through your open windows. For a complete list of the new features and changes, check the GNOME 3 release notes.

Despite GNOME 3 being officially launched, there aren’t actually any releases for existing, stable Linux distros — it’s the live CD/USB images, or Ubuntu users will have to wait for the launch of 11.04 for a GNOME 3 PPA, but it will break Unity in the process. Fedora users will have to wait for for the May 24 release of Fedora 15. Of course, if you’re feeling crazy, you can always build GNOME 3 from source.

Last time around, Apple was cognizant not everyone has broadband to download a 4GB OS, offering solace to those with slow internet with a (pricey $69) USB stick alternative. Times change though, as Cupertino’s confirmed to Pocket-lint that the recently unveiled OS X Mountain Lion won’t be offered with a physical counterpart. Apple’s reasoning? “It was an interesting test, but it turns out the App Store was just fine for getting the new OS.” So there’s that. High time you took the plunge and upgraded to broadband apparently, or contemplated moving within the vicinity of an Apple Retail Store’s willing WiFi. That or you could just buy a new machine. Your call.

I have a thing for physics games, and I’ve been known to post the occasional platformer or action game here and there. But Let it Slide is one of the brainiest games I’ve posted to date.

The idea is very simple, and far from original: You get a board with pieces arranged in a particular pattern; you have to slide those around until you get the special piece into its target location.

It’s not even about finding out where the target location is – you can just hover over “dim tiles” and instantly see where you’re supposed to bring the special piece. But getting it there is a whole different story.

There are five tutorial levels, which I strongly recommend you do. Then there are twenty “beginner” levels, but that’s really a misnomer. If those are the beginner levels, I don’t want to know what the intermediate and advanced levels look like!

Every time you finish a level you get a score based on how many clicks it took you – each level has a “par” (the minimum number of clicks it could be completed in), and your performance is compared to that gold standard. Because it’s such a brainy game, getting it right is quite satisfying. I was downright proud of myself when I managed to finish a few levels. All in all, quite recommended, especially if you’ve got a few minutes of quiet. It might actually help you focus better later on.

So, you’re a ball. A Tarzan Ball, to be precise. You’ve earned the nickname thanks to your astonishing ability to shoot out a lengthy ‘vine’ (I hope it’s a vine) at objects, and then pull yourself towards those objects.

That’s a handy ability to have, especially since you’ve got no legs, no arms, and no other means of transportation. In Tarzan Ball, the rope is everything. But you don’t just swing around the screen aimlessly – that wouldn’t be much of a game now, would it?

Instead, your goal in life is to collect “targets”. Each level has one of these “targets” hidden away somewhere on the screen, usually behind some kind of barrier. Once you navigate close enough to the target, you can shoot your rope at it and just reel it in. That’s when you pass the level.

You can’t die in this game, but it can still be very frustrating. It’s actually one of the tougher games I’ve posted recently. Still, if you enjoy physics games, this one is quite nicely made.

From Zatz Not Funny comes word that TiVo owners are being notified their access to Blockbuster On Demand will come to an end March 31st, ending a run originally announced three years before. While this certainly affects TiVo’s ability to offer the one box to search multiple services idea introduced with the Premiere, it could be more telling about Blockbuster’s plans for the current incarnation of its internet movie service. As forum posters on TiVo Community point out, the list of supported devices is rapidly shrinking, with Vizio and Western Digital WD TV Live owners getting their own Dear John letters only a year or so after the app originally rolled out. Currently, the list of connected TV devices is limited exclusively to Samsung HDTVs and Blu-ray players, plus some cellphones and tablets. Once upon a time, Blockbuster desired an On Demand presence in “nearly every connected device” — not to mention “major market presence” for the now Redbox-owned Express kiosks — but after its purchase by Dish Network clearly those days are over. Now the only question is if / when we’ll see a new service that better fits with the already announced Movie Pass package and what devices it might work on.

Up until a couple of years ago, I used to turn to RescueTime to figure out how I spend my time online. Then it got too complex, and I stopped using it. Personal Activity Monitor is like a vastly dumbed-down version of RescueTime, and I mean that as a compliment. It’s free and bare-bones — all it does is track what applications you’re using and for how long.

A big drawback at this point is that it doesn’t integrate with Web browsers to help you analyze how you spend your time on the Web. Still, if your work doesn’t require constant Web app use, knowing how long you’ve used a browser overall might be enough to help you manage your time.

Burrito Bison is a pretty simple game, but if you’re into gummy bears you might find it addictive.

As you may have guessed from the name, you’re a bison (not a burrito, though). In the course of your day-to-day grocery shopping, you’re abducted into a bag of gummy bears, and must now fend for yourself.

At the beginning of each round you launch yourself onto the marching gummy (gummi?) bears, while you’re being watched by a huge crowd of even more gummy bears. Your goal is to keep bouncing on the bears and earn more and more money while you do it. Every time you hit a gummy bear, you lose some momentum. If you hit the floor, you basically lose all of it.

But don’t give up just yet! You have an emergency thrust which you can use to gain some momentum and keep bouncing on those bears. This extra thrust gets refilled as you hit more bears.

There are also special gummy bears that give you extra thrust or extra money. The money comes in handy at the end of each round, when you can shop for cool stuff to make your bison even more effective against those gummy bears.

It’s a fun and colorful game that kept my interest for quite some time, and almost sent me running to the closest store to get some gummy bears!

Okay, see that snaking line coming in from the right on the screenshot? That’s you. And see those large round circles? Those are supposedly grapefruits, only they won’t sit still – they keep moving up and down and cutting across your path. And if you touch one, you die!

That’s what you have to deal with in Line Grapefruit. But that’s not all – you’re also on a time limit. In fact, you have a very limited amount of time to make it through the “path” (for lack of a better word). You need to snake your way through the winding trail without touching anything. The good news is that a grapefruit only kills you if it touches the end of the line – once you’ve made it past the grapefruit, nothing happens if it crosses the path you’ve made.

This is not an easy game, but it’s quite unique – I can’t recall seeing another game quite like it.

Remember that controversial Motorola Droid 4 root method we talked about last week?  You might have skimmed over the part where the method was presumed to work on just about any Motorola device, but it seems to be true — the Motorola Droid  XYBOARD (both versions) have been rooted using the method.  

There's not a lot to actually do with your XYBOARD that needs root just yet, but we're sure all that will change soon now that an easy method is available.  It looks simple enough — install some drivers then run a batch file to root the tablet.  You can find all the particulars and the needed files at the source link, and of course join the discussion in the forums if you hit a snag.

HTC sends word via its official Facebook page that in addition to the handful of phones already announced, Verizon's Rhyme, Droid Incredible 2 and Thunderbolt will be getting the latest version of Android later in the year. And on the Canadian side, the manufacturer has confirmed that the HTC Raider on Rogers and Bell will also see ICS in the months ahead.

We have more good news related to Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, and can confirm that upgrades are planned for Verizon Wireless customers with the HTC Rhyme, HTC Thunderbolt, and DROID Incredible 2 by HTC, as well as the already announced HTC Rezound.

 

In addition, the HTC Raider is on the list to receive ICS for customers of Rogers and Bell in Canada. Stay tuned for more news on Ice Cream Sandwich releases in the coming weeks.

So great news for owners of those phones, especially the long-suffering Thunderbolt, which took long enough to get bumped from Froyo to Gingerbread. HTC expects to begin updating international handsets to ICS in the next month, starting with the Sensation and Sensation XE.

We originally reported on SPDY way back in November 2009, when Google introduced it as yet another experiment in making the Web faster, like Go, Native Client and speculative pre-connections. Over the last 18 months, though, SPDY support has found its way into the stable build of Chrome.

SPDY is basically a streamlined and more efficient version of HTTP. At its most basic, SPDY introduces parallel, multiplexed streams over a single TCP connection — but at the same time, SPDY allows for prioritization, so that vital content (HTML) can be sent before periphery content (JavaScript, video). All in all, the SPDY protocol can halve page load times, which is obviously rather significant.

The best bit, though, is that SPDY is an open-source project. HTTP 1.1 is a lumbering beast that needs to be replaced before low-latency real-time computing really becomes a reality, and SPDY is one of the best options currently on the table. To be honest, we’re not sure why SPDY hasn’t received more coverage — it’s awesome in every way. At the moment, though, the only way to help speed up SPDY’s proliferation, is with an experimental Apache mod.

As far as actually ‘trying it out,’ your best bet is downloading Chrome, hitting up some Google sites, and then checking chrome://net-internals to see your active SPDY sessions. SPDY is a transparent replacement for HTTP, though, and as such it’s rather hard to see its effects. Google’s sites definitely feel fast in Chrome, but there are more technologies than just SPDY at work.

Stanford researcher Jonathan Mayer has discovered a curious Safari loophole that allows Google to track a user’s browsing activity via cookie-laced web ads. As it turns out, Apple’s browser normally accepts cookies from sites that a user visits, but automatically blocks them from third-party advertisers. As Mayer found out, though, advertisers can still circumvent this filter by enticing users to interact with ads in different ways. In the case of Google, the search giant embedded a “+1″ button on ads produced with its DoubleClick technology, as part of an opt-in feature for Google+ users. If a user was logged in to Google+ and had agreed to see +1 ad displays, he or she would have a cookie planted on their device, thanks to a system that sent invisible forms from Apple computers or iPhones. This made it seem as if a user actually submitted the form intentionally, thereby convincing Safari to allow cookies. These cookies were only temporary, with shelf lives of up to 24 hours, but they could open the door for many more, since Safari allows sites to plant them after having received access to install at least one.

After the Wall Street Journal notified Google of this loophole, the company promptly disabled it and duly apologized, adding that it didn’t realize that its +1 system would plant tracking cookies on a user’s device. “We didn’t anticipate that this would happen, and we have now started removing these advertising cookies from Safari browsers,” Google’s Rachel Whetstone explained. “It’s important to stress that, just as on other browsers, these advertising cookies do not collect personal information.” An Apple spokesperson, meanwhile, issued the following statement: “We are aware that some third parties are circumventing Safari’s privacy features and we are working to put a stop to it.”

Ah, compatibility, she can be a cruel mistress, prone to leaving your favorite devices out in the cold and your wallet a few bills lighter. Apple’s latest OS update, Mountain Lion, is no different. OS X 10.8 won’t run on just any Mac, so, the question is, will it run on yours? Well, if you’ve got any machine from 2009 or newer the answer is yes. Older than that and things get a little bit shaky. iMacs are the most forgiving, with support starting on the mid-2007 models. Any Pro desktop from early 2008 on should be fine, while Xserves get cut off at early 2009 along with the Mac Mini. The original Air is already getting turned aside and you’ll need a late 2008 model (or newer) for the update, while vanilla MacBooks are nearing total obsolescence as support starts with the aluminum models from 2008. Lastly, those of you rocking 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pros should be golden starting with late 2007 models. Oh, and any 13-inch Pro should be good to go.

It has emerged that the underlying cause of RSA’s SecurID gaffe was the recently-reported zero-day vulnerability found in Adobe’s Flash Player.

The exploit, which used specially-crafted Flash embedding in Excel spreadsheets, was first reported on March 15 and has since been fixed. RSA was hacked sometime in the first half of March when an employee was successfully spear phished and opened an infected spreadsheet. As soon as the spreadsheet was opened, an advanced persistent threat (APT) — a backdoor Trojan — called Poison Ivy was installed. From there, the attackers basically had free reign of RSA’s internal network, which led to the eventual dissemination of data pertaining to RSA’s two-factor authenticators.

The attack is reminiscent of the APTs used in the China vs. Google attacks from last year — and indeed, Uri Rivner, the head of new technologies at RSA is quick to point out that that other big companies are being attacked, too: “The number of enterprises hit by APTs grows by the month; and the range of APT targets includes just about every industry. Unofficial tallies number dozens of mega corporations attacked [...] These companies deploy any imaginable combination of state-of-the-art perimeter and end-point security controls, and use all imaginable combinations of security operations and security controls. Yet still the determined attackers find their way in.”

What we’d like to know, though, is whether the attack on RSA was caused by Adobe’s lackadaisical approach to patching Flash — or was it the other way around? Was it the RSA attack that first brought the zero-day vulnerability to Adobe’s attention?

By now, you’ve seen all that RIM’s 2.0 software update for the PlayBook is prepared to give — just not in your own hands. But that could all very well change if news of a February 21st release date, supposedly confirmed by the lips of Waterloo’s own during an early morning webcast, prove true. According to BerryReview‘s sources, the roll out is purportedly scheduled for next Tuesday, falling neatly in line with earlier reports that it would hit users’ slates sometime later this month. So, if you’ve been clinging to that understated tab and looking forward to an OS-future populated by a native email client, address book, BlackBerry Bridge enhancements and social networking integration, well, it appears your dreams are about to come true.

Update: Looks like the reports were too good to be true. A rep from RIM has clarified that while no specific date has yet been announced, the 2.0 update is still on track for a February release.

TripAdvisor, the popular travel planning tool, has just launched an app for Windows Phone 7. Just like the mobile website, the app allows you to search for anything travel-related — from hotels and flights to restaurants and points-of-interest to visit once you reach your destination.

Geolocation is supported, which allows TripAdvisor to quickly locate places nearby. But while that’s a neat feature, it’s also a bit of a downer — because, really, it’s about the only feature TripAdvisor for WP7 brings to the table that its mobile Web app doesn’t already offer (its browser-based geolocation doesn’t work with WP7 at the moment).

While it’s nice to see Windows Phone 7 users getting some big-name apps, it’d be even nicer if we saw some packing a bit more swagger.

Still, TripAdvisor for WP7 might just be worth installing on your device if you’re frequently on the go — at least until a better browser arrives with the Mango update.

Apple released a developer preview for OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion today, and it finally makes the Mac an equal iCloud citizen, alongside the iPhone and iPad. Previously, iCloud could be enabled as a sync tool for OS X, and a way to re-download iTunes content, but versions of apps like iWork for Mac weren’t updated to take advantage of Documents in the cloud.

Now that Windows 8 images have begun leaking out, it’s only a matter of time until developers start releasing mods for Windows 7 which mimic upcoming features. Over at Into Windows, they’ve spotted one such mod already.

In the earliest Windows 8 images, we saw Windows Live integration on the taskbar. In the far right corner, there’s a user tile displayed. If you’d like to do the same on Windows 7, download Taskbar User Tile from DeviantArt user AngelWZR.

Once installed, your current picture will appear on the taskbar. Click it, and a menu appears which allows you to log off, switch users, and access the control panel. Right now, the mod only works if your taskbar is displayed on the bottom of your Windows desktop.

So this professor comes up with a new toilet cleaner that works by “eating” the dirt; or so he thinks. That’s how the plot starts for Tasty Planet. You play the role of the toilet cleaner, but you’re not really a toilet cleaner after all — you’re a blob of gray goo that can eat anything that’s smaller than yourself.

As you chomp away, you grow — and as you grow, you can eat bigger and bigger stuff. The first level pits you against microscopic particles; by the time I stopped playing, I got all the way to eating cats and dogs. I know that sounds disturbing, but it’s a really cute game, and there’s no gore or anything like that.

Supposedly you keep growing and growing until you’re able to eat whole planets (hence the name). The challenge factor comes when you realize you can’t touch any critter larger than yourself – you’ll get “bitten” and become smaller. In the beginning you’re so small, that a single touch can kill you. Later on, you’re big enough that touching larger animals doesn’t kill you on the spot, but it does reduce your size. Each level is timed, so if you’re not large enough by the time your clock runs out, you need to start again. As long as you don’t touch the larger animals, you should be fine.

All in all, a fun, addictive little game. It’s available for iOS, too.

Ever since the debut of Ice Cream Sandwich, the masses of Motorola owners have yearned to discover when (if?) their devices would receive Android’s latest and greatest. Well, Moto’s finally let the cat out of the bag, setting out domestic and global timelines for its tablets and phones to get Android 4.0. Xoom WiFi owners here in the states have been enjoying ICS for a month, and Family Edition owners can expect the same tasty treat in Q2 of this year. Poor Kodak just can’t catch a break these days. Nearly a month after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and mere days after shuttering its digital camera business, the sputtering company now finds itself the target of no less a behemoth than Apple. Yesterday, Cupertino’s legal team asked a US Bankruptcy Court for permission to go after Kodak on two legal fronts: with a patent infringement lawsuit in a Manhattan district court, and a corollary complaint in the ITC. According to Bloomberg, Apple’s patent suit focuses on technologies that Kodak uses in its line of digital cameras, printers and digital picture frames. Unfortunately for Kodak, printers are one of the product areas it recently decided to focus on, as confirmed in last week’s restructuring announcement. Salt, meet wound.

These two companies, of course, have been involved in an ongoing ITC battle over Kodak’s image transfer technology, with the latest salvo coming last month, when the camera company launched a fresh batch of litigation against both Apple and HTC. If the bankruptcy court grants Apple’s request, the company will head straight to court, in the hopes of obtaining a block against Kodak’s allegedly infringing products. Kodak, meanwhile, could file a request to hold off the district level case until the ITC ruling comes through, though Apple said yesterday that it would press forward, regardless. The company was also quick to point out that it’s not legally bound to request permission to sue a court-protected bankrupt company, but did so “out of an abundance of caution,” which is really considerate, if you think about it.

Not into that whole $500 fuse-melting monster graphics card thing? Then good news for you: AMD has finally brought out two more affordable models in its 28nm Radeon HD range. The 7770 is priced at $169 and claims to be the world’s first reference GPU that comes factory clocked to 1GHz. Meanwhile, the 7750 comes in at $109 and boasts a low enough wattage (75W, versus 100W for the 7770) that it doesn’t require its own power connector. Both cards pack 1GB RAM and run on AMD’s Cape Verde architecture, which makes them slightly different to the Tahiti-powered 7900 series, although they do inherit key top-end features like ZeroCore Power, PowerTune and Eyefinity 2.0.

Reviewers have mixed opinions, as befits a healthy blogosphere, but the low-power 7750 generally comes off slightly better, especially for those looking to build a budget or HTPC rig. AnandTech likes the power-to-performance ratio of both cards, but dislikes the price-to-performance of the 7770, noting that the older 6850 still offers more in this respect — at least for gamers. HotHardware concludes that AMD might have “technically” priced both cards “just right,” considering how they stack up against NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX560 and 550, but in practice those NVIDIA cards deliver a lot more punch for just a few extra dollars. To celebrate the imminent marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Royal Collection will release an Android an iOS app that chronicles the last seven royal marriages, including Queen Victoria’s marriage to Prince Albert in 1840.

Ironically, the app won’t actually feature anything to do with William and Kate’s marriage — rather, it will focus on the “tradition, splendor and romance” that are intrinsic to British royal marriages. “[The app] will share the stories of past royal weddings and offer a wealth of historical context for the ceremony on April 29.”

Unfortunately, the app, which has been lumbered with the fantastically creative name of ‘Royal App,’ won’t be available until April 18 — just 11 days before Kate’s big day. It won’t be free, either: it’ll cost the rather princely sum of £1.79, or three of your Tea Party-loving dollars. The money will go to the Royal Collection, though, which is a good cause!

Poor Kodak just can’t catch a break these days. Nearly a month after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and mere days after shuttering its digital camera business, the sputtering company now finds itself the target of no less a behemoth than Apple. Yesterday, Cupertino’s legal team asked a US Bankruptcy Court for permission to go after Kodak on two legal fronts: with a patent infringement lawsuit in a Manhattan district court, and a corollary complaint in the ITC. According to Bloomberg, Apple’s patent suit focuses on technologies that Kodak uses in its line of digital cameras, printers and digital picture frames. Unfortunately for Kodak, printers and picture frames are precisely the two product areas it decided to focus on, as confirmed in last week’s restructuring announcement. Salt, meet wound. If the bankruptcy court grants the request, Apple will head straight to court, in the hopes of obtaining a block against Kodak’s allegedly infringing products. Kodak, meanwhile, could file a request to hold off the district level case until the ITC ruling comes through, though Apple said yesterday that it would press forward, regardless. The company was also quick to point out that it’s not legally bound to request permission to sue a court-protected bankrupt company, but did so “out of an abundance of caution,” which is really considerate, if you think about it.

Moments ago, Mozilla stripped the release candidate moniker from Firefox 4 Mobile and pronounced it fit for public release. If you have a Nokia N900 phone, or a fairly-modern Android 2.0-or-later device, go ahead and install it from the Market, by using scanning the QR code after the break, or by visiting Firefox.com/m.

Accompanying the release is the launch of Spark, a cute social game that’s designed to fuel the adoption of Firefox 4 Mobile, much like last week’s use of Glow and Twitter Party during Firefox 4 PC’s release.

While the browser still feels a little rough around the edges, it’s definitely worth trying out if you’re still using Android’s stock browser. Its JavaScript performance is significantly better than any other Android browser, and if you use Firefox on your PC, its built-in Sync functionality is awesome.

Over the next few days we’ll have plenty of tips and tricks for Firefox 4 Mobile, and a list of the best add-ons available for the new browser.

It’s hard to believe: our world-spanning network, our Internet, which is the cornerstone of free speech and free society — which, on a good day, is capable of causing populist revolutions – is still crippled by banal geolocation restrictions. We are, of course, talking about Amazon’s two latest offerings, both of which are only available in the United States. Last week it was the excellent Android Appstore for Android, and today it’s the Amazon Cloud Player for Web and Android.

Along with Cloud Player, Amazon also launched Cloud Drive, which is basically just like any other cloud storage digital locker. It’s not particularly feature rich, and there’s no real reason to use it over something like SugarSync or SkyDrive — it does work outside the US, however.

Its primary purpose, as far as we’re concerned, is that it stores your your Cloud Player music in a subdirectory. You get 5GB of Cloud Drive storage for free, and then it’s $1 per gigabyte per year if you need more space.

The Amazon Cloud Player itself will not, to put it bluntly, blow your mind. It works, but it’s very much an early, and possibly rushed, release. Let’s dive in to the Web and Android players for a closer look.

In news that will no doubt shake the very bedrock of your belief system, Apple has asked Toyota to remove its Scion theme and its advertising from ModMyi, a Cydia repository. The Scion theme has been available for weeks, but after it received a ton of press in the last couple of days, Apple finally lashed out.

It’s not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal – but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn’t matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.

This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia’s creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!

As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.

So this professor comes up with a new toilet cleaner that works by “eating” the dirt; or so he thinks. That’s how the plot starts for Tasty Planet. You play the role of the toilet cleaner, but you’re not really a toilet cleaner after all — you’re a blob of gray goo that can eat anything that’s smaller than yourself.

As you chomp away, you grow — and as you grow, you can eat bigger and bigger stuff. The first level pits you against microscopic particles; by the time I stopped playing, I got all the way to eating cats and dogs. I know that sounds disturbing, but it’s a really cute game, and there’s no gore or anything like that.

Supposedly you keep growing and growing until you’re able to eat whole planets (hence the name). The challenge factor comes when you realize you can’t touch any critter larger than yourself – you’ll get “bitten” and become smaller. In the beginning you’re so small, that a single touch can kill you. Later on, you’re big enough that touching larger animals doesn’t kill you on the spot, but it does reduce your size. Each level is timed, so if you’re not large enough by the time your clock runs out, you need to start again. As long as you don’t touch the larger animals, you should be fine.

All in all, a fun, addictive little game. It’s available for iOS, too.

Verizon’s Droid 4 was officially released last week, so naturally, iFixit spent the weekend pulling the phone apart for all to see. Among the nuggets of knowledge uncovered during the teardown is the discovery that the fourth iteration breaks from Droid tradition in a couple of not-so-positive ways. First off, Moto decided to integrate the keyboard into the motherboard, meaning if one of your keys quits working, you’ll have to replace the motherboard, too. Not only that, but the Droid 4′s battery is purportedly no longer user-replaceable, though iFixit’s deft disembodied hands were able to pry it loose with some effort. It’s not all bad, as the teardown did confirm that the handset does, in fact, pack the promised 16GB of onboard storage. Mozilla Messaging, citing Mozilla’s increased focus on Web-borne communications, will be reintegrating with Mozilla Labs.

The Messaging subsidiary was formed in 2008 to focus on Thunderbird, but given Mozilla Labs’ current focus on identity and contact management, it now makes sense for the groups to be merged. Thunderbird will be unaffected by the change — some URLs might change, but that’s it — and presumably Messaging’s F1 and Raindrop will thrive in the Labs playground.

What this means for the end user — for the hundreds of millions of Firefox users — is that the next big additions will be communication- and messaging-oriented. Contacts and F1 will be almost certainly be baked into Firefox 5 or 6, both of which will be released this year — and, who knows, there might be something else even more exciting up Mozilla Labs’ sleeve!

BB10 has shown its pretty face, and we'll be damned if there's not a lot there to love. There should be, as Research in Motion has certainly borrowed more than a bit in the UI department from Android, as well as a little from Windows Phone 7.  We're not knocking them for it (OK, maybe just a little), because RIM has needed a serious refresh to their image among consumers for a while now, and using what people (and pundits) have been praising makes perfect sense. We'll let you look the whole thing over at CrackBerry, where you can see B10's homescreen widgets in action, but we have to call out a few things here.

Just as it is with Android, the application tray looks like it's done well, with 16 icons per page, well spaced and high resolution. We're not sure, but there are probably more than 16 apps for BlackBerry, so you'll have a multi-page design, and you have full time access to the buttons that RIM deems important across the bottom.  Speaking of which, notice the widgets on the homescreen.  We can't decide just who should be flattered the most here, because they look like a healthy mash-up of an Android phone with WP7's Metro interface thrown in.  It's pretty, and functional. It's also going to makes those BlackBerries look all the same, or would if more phones were getting it. We fully expect to see BlackBerry fragmentation rants across the 'tubes any second now.  

All kidding aside here folks — we want RIM to succeed in a big way in their quest to keep things afloat. If all the competition dies off, the winner(s) have no reason to keep trying to make things better. We all want things that are better. We're happy to see RIM pulling what works from other mobile operating systems, and changing it up to fit better with theirs. If BB10 turns out to be the best thing since sliced bread, Google will have to rethink how to slice bread and give us more with the next version. We all win here, and winning is a very good thing indeed.

The big news that had the world of green transportation buzzing this week was Tesla’s unveil of its brand new Model X luxury car and we also saw the blazing fast Lightning GT EV hit the track for the first time. We also shined light on the futuristic solar-powered SPV car while Mitsubishi’s i-MIEV electric car stole the greenest vehicle title from the Honda Civic and the Boulder EV became the first electric truck capable of hitting 70 mph. We were also excited to announce that San Francisco is set to launch its electric bike sharing program, French cyclists won the controversial right to run red traffic lights, and Volkswagen unveiled its Think Blue Beetle, which is made from 2,805 pieces of recycled trash.

Energy news sent shock waves around the world this week as Inhabitat reported that the US approved its first nuclear power plants in 30 years and the temperature of Japan’s damaged Fukushima nuclear plant suddenly soared up to 45 degrees celsius. We also saw an energy-generating “Solar Tulip” power tower spring up in Spain, and a 10-year-old girl discovered a new molecule that stands to improve energy storage. Meanwhile, we brought you the scoop on the world’s next tallest skyscraper in Azerbaijan and industrial giant AAB announced plans for a worldwide electric vehicle charging network.

In recycled design news, we saw a colossal statue made from 4,200 Coca Cola crates rise up over Cape Town and we shared a set of larger than life beasts made from recycled motorcycle parts. We also brought you a brilliant line of lamps made from recycled e-waste and a set of LEGO-like Earth Blocks made from coffee beans and tea chaff. As it currently stands, Google hands over the ‘final’ code for each version of Android, and OEMs and developers then spend some time customizing the OS to fit their hardware, and to create a unique and marketable flavor. That’s all set to change, however.

Over the last few months, according to several people familiar with the matter, Android licensees such as HTC, Motorola and Facebook, have been asked to sign ‘non-fragmentation clauses.’ This new contract caveat will give Google the right to review and pass judgment on all changes to the Android OS. Two executives at Facebook say that they’re unhappy that Google gets to review its changes to Android — which is understandable, given Facebook and Google are direct competitors — and there have also been allegations that Google is preventing some Verizon devices from shipping because they include Microsoft’s Bing instead of Google search.

LTE isn’t quite as wide spread in the Old World as it is over here in the western hemisphere but, as many European countries race to get their 4G deployed, top notch devices are already starting to roll in. The GT-P7320, better known as the Galaxy Tab 8.9, just passed through the Global Certification Forum, bound for unspecified EU nation. This particular model supports both HSPA on the 900MHz and 2100MHz bands, and LTE over 800MHz and 2.6GHz. Carrier, release date, price — pretty much everything about the device’s debut is a mystery at this point. But, with Mobile World Congress just a couple of weeks away, we’re sure it won’t hold on to its secrets for long.
