As much as we were hoping to get some definitive statements from AT&T and Verizon’s Q1 2011 financials about the Verizon iPhone’s impact on the smartphone market, none were really forthcoming. It’s left to analyst outfits like the NPD, therefore, to try and parse the data for us and read between the official lines. The latest numbers from the NPD Group’s Mobile Phone Tracker indicate that Apple’s share of US smartphones sales jumped from 19 percent in Q4 2010 to 28 percent in the first quarter of this year, which helped stymie Android’s prodigious expansion. The Google OS went from being on 53 percent of all smartphones sold to a flat 50 percent in the quarter. Also intriguing about the period is that, for the first time, smartphones accounted for more than half of all mobile phones sold in the US, at 54 percent. The top five best-selling cellphones also happened to be smartphones, with Apple and HTC providing two each; the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, Droid X, EVO 4G, and the Droid Incredible took home the NPD commendations.

[Thanks, Matt]

Complete Guide: Jailbreak iOS 4.3.2 for iPhone 4 & 3GS Using Redsn0w

Earlier, the iPhone Dev team has released the untethered jailbreak tool to jailbreak iOS 4.3.2. It’s a little bit late for us to put up the guide. Anyway, here we are. We’ll walk you through the whole jailbreak process with the complete guide to jailbreak iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS using Redsn0w.

Before we begin, please read through the note carefully:

  • This guide is intended to jailbreaking iPhone 4 and 3GS running iOS 4.3.2. But it should also work for iPad (1st generation) and iPod touch (3G/4G).
  • If you depend on ultrasn0w unlocking, please stay away from jailbreaking with redsn0w. You should create a custom IPSW using PwnageTool that allows you to preserve the baseband version. If you don’t know what we’re talking about, just stay with your current iOS version. Don’t upgrade to 4.3.2, otherwise, you’ll lose the unlock.
  • Make sure you use iTunes 10.0 or up for the jailbreak. If you are using older version of iTunes, please upgrade it first. You can download the latest version of iTunes from Apple.
  • As usual, before jailbreaking, make sure you have backup all your contacts, sms, photos, etc via iTunes. Simply sync your iPhone and backup the iPhone data.
  • Disclaimer: Jailbreaking may void your warranty of iPhone. Again, jailbreak it at your own risk. There is no guarantee that this guide works on all iPhone devices.

Upgrading to iOS 4.3.2

1. Download iPhone OS 4.3.2 firmware (iPhone 4 / 3GS) and save it into a folder.

2. Connect your iPhone via USB and launch iTunes.

3. Restore your iPhone with iPhone OS 4.3.2 For Windows, hold SHIFT key and click on the “Restore” button and select the firmware file (i.e. For 3GS, please select iPhone2,1_4.3.2_8H7_Restore.ipsw. For iPhone 4, please select iPhone3,1_4.3.2_8H7_Restore.ipsw) you have just downloaded. For Mac, hold option key and click on the “Restore” button and select the firmware file to restore.

Update ios431

4. iTunes will then upgrade your iPhone to iOS 4.3.2. Just wait until the process completes.

Jailbreaking iOS 4.3.2 using Redsn0w

5. Next, we will jailbreak your iPhone using redsn0w. You can download redsn0w 0.9.6 RC14 here (Windows / Mac). Once download it, extract it.

6. Launch Redsn0w

7. Click “browse” and select the iPhone 4.3.2 firmware file. For iPhone 4, please select iPhone3,1_4.3.2_8H7_Restore.ipsw. For iPhone 3GS, please select iPhone2,1_4.3.2_8H7_Restore.ipsw. Redsn0w then verifies your firmware file.

8. RedSn0w will now try to identify and process the firmware file. Once the firmware file has been identified click Next to continue.

9. Redsn0w then starts preparing jailbreak data based on the IPSW file. Just wait till you see the below screen. Select “Install Cydia” and click “Next” to proceed.

10. Now, make sure your iPhone is turned OFF and connected with your computer via USB cable. If you haven’t done so, simply connect it with USB and then power it off before you click the “Next” button.

11. Once you click “Next”, follow the procedures to put your iPhone into DFU mode. If you fail to do so, don’t worry. It won’t brick your iPhone and you can simply go through the procedures again until you get it work.

12. If you have successfully put your iPhone into DFU mode, redsn0w will do the rest. Just sit back and relax.

13. While jailbreaking, your iPhone will show downloading jailbreak data, flashing NOR, etc. And, just don’t touch your iPhone and keep waiting. Once completed, redsn0w will let you know the jailbreak process is successful.

After reboot, your iPhone should be jailbroken. Lastly, sync back your backup data with iTunes and restore all your contacts & SMS.

Qik Video Connect: Breaking the iPhone and Android Barrier

Android and iOS are two of the most preferred mobile device platforms, which also make them the two biggest competitors in the smart phone industry. This has created a void between the iPhone and Android users, until the arrival of an innovative iPhone application that allows the users of both platforms to interact: Qik Video Connect.

As long as your friends have the Qik Video Connect application, video chatting with them is fun and easy, regardless if they have iPhones or Android phones. This revolutionary app, so far, is the first of its kind, with none of the other video chatting applications breaking the boundaries between the rival brands. Users can also make video calls through wifi and 3G.This proves to be a huge convenience for smart phone, iPod and tablet computer owners.

For Android users, you can only enjoy the cross-brand connectivity if you download the Qik update. So, make sure that you have the latest version of the application before you start giving your iPhone-owning friends a ring or dropping them a line via video chat. The app’s system requirements, furthermore, are at least Android 2.1 and iOS 4.1 (for all iOS devices), respectively.

The iPhone application has decent quality for live streaming, which is further enhanced by devices with high resolution cameras. As for the interface, the layout is pretty straightforward. Novice users won’t have trouble toggling on any of the app’s features. You have the option of applying real-time effects on the interface, in case you get bored with your friend’s face or the screen’s appearance.

Qik Video Connect is a handy device that benefits iPhone and Android users. Now you finally have something in common with your Android-toting friends. Then again, a lot of people would probably use the app to continue the never-ending debate on which operating system is better.

Qik Video Connect works on the iPhone, iPad and the iPod Touch, running on at least iOS 4.1. To download this nifty app, just check out this link.

Color, the $41-million-in-funding location-oriented photo sharing startup, is susceptible to simple GPS spoofing. With nothing more than a jailbroken iPad or iPhone, you can use FakeLocation to trick Color into thinking you’re somewhere else. Within seconds you can be browsing photos that were snapped thousands of miles away. With a little digging, you can pore through photos not intended for your eyes.

Of course, such a hack isn’t illegal as such — every photo you take with Color is public. With FakeLocation you are simply circumventing Color’s very limited location-oriented security mechanism. It does undermine Color’s usefulness (and uniqueness), though — if nefarious types can sit in their bedroom or basement and eavesdrop on classy dinner parties and wild night club soirees, people might be less inclined to share personal photos with those around them.

Fortunately, both for Color and its users, this is an easy security hole to plug — at least in the short term. The app (or server-side) code simply checks to see if the user has ‘teleported’ an impossibly large distance, without any intermediate steps in between. In the long term, though, Color’s users must be aware that its social graph is completely public. Color’s users must realize that every photo they upload is visible by anyone, from any place.

After the break, just to elucidate a little on Color’s actual business model and ultimate intention, we have two amazing quotes from Bill Nguyen, Color’s founder.

For years, South Korean activists have been sending pro-democracy propaganda to the politically and informationally isolated citizens of North Korea via balloon, in an attempt to share information about Kim Jong Il and his regime. Generally, it’s information that is either censored or illegal in the communist country. Sometimes it’s Bible verses. Today, AFP reports the activists sent out their latest bunch of information balloons even after Kim Jong Il threatened to attack them. Here’s what they put inside. More »

ommwriter

I have a thing for full-screen text editing. I use WriteMonkey for my creative writing needs, and VIM in a full-screen PuTTY session for my Web development work. That being the case, I’m all over the monospace, dark-background, focused editing scene.

OmmWriter attempts to take that aesthetic and make it somehow more spiritual, with three picturesque backgrounds and ambient background audio tracks (there are seven of each in the paid version).

I’m of two minds about this app. On the one hand, yes, it’s beautiful. But if you want music as a background to your writing, why not pick your own soundtrack with Winamp or Foobar2000 running in the background?

OmmWriter also offers three keyboard-clicking sounds, which are kind of nice. None of these features are groundbreaking, really. OmmWriter could be seen as a way to gently ease into the world of distraction-free writing — in case something like WriteMonkey’s dark background is just too oppressive for you.

After the fold you can see a video showcasing several of OmmWriter’s features and creative soundscapes.

Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive

When Amazon Appstore for Android launched last week, one of its primary features — Test Drive — was disabled just a few minutes after it opened. With no try-before-you-buy, no refund process, and 1-Click purchasing ready to strike at any moment, this caused some problems. Anyway, don’t despair: Test Drive is now enabled.

Before you get your hopes up, Test Drive doesn’t work with every app. The IMDb app works fine — you can even watch movie trailers on it! — but the Angry Birds games are sadly not enabled. Some games work surprisingly well, though, like Bubble Buster. There’s very little latency, and the framerate is really rather good. The Test Drive experience is so true to life that you even get ads; how cool is that?

Inspire 4G update pushing out now

Android Central

Have an HTC Inspire 4G on AT&T? Have the latest software upgrade? You don’t? Well, get to your nearest system update (it’s in settings, boys and girls) and see if yours is waiting for you, as 1.84.502.11 is being pushed out now. According to HTC, you’re getting:

  • Hotmail, Live, and MSN email auto configuration settings update.
  • Makes the email set up process much easier and includes the most current settings for each type of email.
  • Increased potential data speed at which data can travel on the network.

It’s that last bullet point that’s really the important one, though, because the Inspire is another one of them newfangled "4G" HSPA+ that hasn’t been allowed to live up to its potential. So update away, run some speed tests and let us know how it goes.

PlayStation One games on the Android Market

If you’re lucky enough to own an Xperia Play — Sony Ericsson’s new Gingerbread-powered smartphone-cum-gamepad — you can now buy PlayStation (PSX) titles from the Android Market.

There are five titles currently available, all priced at £3.99: Syphon Filter, MediEvil, Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, and Jumping Flash. They don’t have an American price yet, but that will surely change once the Xperia Play launches in the States.

Two important questions remain unanswered: How big are these games? The Market descriptions say the games are only 5MB, but that sounds incredibly unlikely — and more importantly, will it be possible to ‘spoof’ the Xperia Play and download PSX games onto other Gingerbread-powered phones, like the Nexus S?

In other news, the PlayStation emulator PSX4droid was recently removed from the Android Market. This obviously has nothing to do with today’s release of first-party PlayStation games.

PSX games now available in the Android Market, if you own an Xperia Play originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 04:45:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

iFile has been around for a long time but if you haven’t heard of it, you better check it out and install it on your jailbroken iPhone.

Mobile devices nowadays are built like little personal computers. They store significant amounts of data, operated by numerous functions and applications. The task can be quite an ordeal, especially for newbie users. iFile steps into the picture and helps iPhone users manage their files. It promotes proper foldering and file segregation, so you can you won’t have trouble locating applications and documents whenever you need them.

iFile allows your iPhone to simulate the user friendly interface of personal computers. As you group similar files into folders, you can arrange them in a very orderly manner, one which is well organized, like the file systems of PCs and Macs. Once you’ve arranged your phone files, all it takes is a few key presses to locate previously “buried” functions.

Like using a computer, you can perform commands such as copying files, cut, paste, or place a series of large files into zipped folders. Furthermore, if you receive zip files, you can use the iPhone application to “unpack” them, then assign the various data to the appropriate file groups. Quirky individuals can rename the folders with wacky file names, as a means of security. This way, a person who borrows your phone will have trouble finding incriminating stuff in your phone.

iFile also comes with added functionality. You’ll be able to view certain files not supported by the iPhone, unless you equip it with various programs. Similar to computer codecs, the application lets you view files with previously unsupported file extensions. It won’t give you access to all, but you’ll have more than enough to make mobile Internet browsing and downloading a breeze.

iFile works perfectly with another iPhone application: The Safari Download Manager. Once you get to download multiple files, you can easily transfer them to the folders you’ve created. You can also view or activate them even if they have different file extensions from the files you have on your phone, making the iOS interface even more convenient.

iFile is a jailbreak app which can be downloaded through Cydia. You might as well download it, since it makes tinkering with your phone a whole lot easier. Gone are the days when you have to trouble yourself over functions that are hard to find.

It’s easy to mock the little guy when he takes a handful of giant corporations to court. Such litigious overzealousness usually gets tangled up or tossed out altogether — Klausner Technologies, however, is laughing all the way to the bank, with a stellar track record taking on some of tech’s biggest names over the past few years. To date, the company has scored wins in visual voicemail patent battles with Apple, Google, Verizon, LG, and Vonage — the company also struck a deal with Sprint, though presumably with less teeth-pulling. This week, Klausner added four more big wins to the list, inking deals with Panasonic, Yahoo, Qwest Communications, and Avaya in the wake of suits against the tech firms. The company still has ongoing battles with RIM and Cisco that will hopefully stay civil. We’d hate to see someone send a visual voicemail they’d regret later.

Panasonic, Yahoo, more admit defeat, sign deal with Klausner originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Apr 2011 13:13:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Google, according to reports from “a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem” is finally locking down the open source and easily-fragmented Android operating system.

As it currently stands, Google hands over the ‘final’ code for each version of Android, and OEMs and developers then spend some time customizing the OS to fit their hardware, and to create a unique and marketable flavor. That’s all set to change, however.

Over the last few months, according to several people familiar with the matter, Android licensees such as HTC, Motorola and Facebook, have been asked to sign ‘non-fragmentation clauses.’ This new contract caveat will give Google the right to review and pass judgment on all changes to the Android OS. Two executives at Facebook say that they’re unhappy that Google gets to review its changes to Android — which is understandable, given Facebook and Google are direct competitors — and there have also been allegations that Google is preventing some Verizon devices from shipping because they include Microsoft’s Bing instead of Google search.

Rejoice! No longer will you have to fork over $700 for a Photoshop CS5 license! Adobe has unveiled a new subscription scheme where you can rent the entire Creative Suite, or individual packages, by the month, or for an entire year.

Adobe Photoshop can be yours for $35 per month if you agree to rent it for 12 months, or $49 per month if you require its services for a shorter period. Dreamweaver can be had for even cheaper, at just $19 per month. The entire Master Collection is still rather expensive, though, at $125 per month.

Today, Adobe also ushered in the release of Creative Suite 5.5, and simultaneously upped its release cycle from 18 months to 24 months. This means, if you rent Photoshop for two years, it’s actually the same cost as buying it outright. There’s no rent-to-own option, though — so you wouldn’t have access to the cheaper upgrade price once Creative Suite 6 rolls around next year. Still, if you need access to Photoshop, After Effects or Premiere for a one-time project, the new rental scheme could be exactly what you’re looking for.

In other news, Adobe has announced that it will be launching three rather exciting iPad apps that work in conjunction with Photoshop: Eazel, Nav, and Color Lava. Eazel lets you five-finger paint on your iPad, and export the result into Photoshop; Nav acts as some kind of workspace, brush and menu extension, and the hopefully named Color Lava is a paint mixing palette. The apps are expected to appear in the App Store in the next 30 days.

You can now rent Adobe Photoshop for $35 per month, CS 5.5 available soon originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 06:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

google chrome 11 proxy
Google Chrome 11 — which just recently made the move to the browser’s beta channel — has received a minor update that gives developers access to two new APIs.

The first is a full-featured proxy API, which will, for example, allow users to set different proxy servers for normal browsing and Incognito mode. Proxy auto-config scripts are also supported by the API.

The second — Web Navigation Extension — is a bit more expansive. This API will allow devs to build everything from more powerful safe browsing extensions — like Traffic Light — to data analysis and reporting extensions.

Both APIs are currently experimental, so you’ll need to enable them on the about:flags page to try out any relevant extensions. Apart from a proxy example built by Google and shipped with the Chromium source, we’re not aware of any examples just yet, however. We’ll let you know when we spot any slick, new extensions which do surface.

Chrome 11 beta adds new experimental APIs for proxies, Web navigation originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 08:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

This year is turning out to be a big one for Apple. They recently passed Microsoft in net income earnings at $5.99 billion compared to $5.23 billion from Microsoft — mainly due to iOS devices like the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 driving sales and raising profit margins. The iPhone, iPad and iPod touch currently represent roughly 65% of overall sales for Apple, with the Verizon iPhone helping push demand even further as Android growth seems to be at a plateau.

Apple and Verizon had a very successful launch of the iPhone 4, which allowed the iPhone to expand its market share that was previously held back by its prolonged carrier exclusivity with AT&T [...] some of that growth came at the expense of Android operating system

Apple has now edged out HTC, Motorola and RIM as the third-largest smartphone maker in the US with 14% share, and they don’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. They just released the white iPhone 4 with reports of lines forming at Apple Stores — all for a device that’s already been on the market for 10 months, just in a different color. And with WWDC 2011 just around the corner for Apple to reveal iOS 5 to the masses, it seems they have nowhere to go but up from here.

But can the iPhone and iPad help sustain Apple’s growth given how determined the competition is at beating them in the smartphone and tablet markets? Sound off in the comments below!

Firefox 4 usage share graph

Using some early numbers from both StatCounter and Net Applications, Mozilla’s noisiest hominid, Asa Dotzler, has illustrated Firefox 4′s meteoric rise to around 5% of Web browser global usage share. Internet Explorer 9, which launched two weeks ago, seems to be enjoying a much more casual stroll in the park with just 1.5% of the global Web usage share.

Interestingly, we can see IE9 dipping between March 20 and 21, just before the ‘Important’ Windows Update rolled out. It’s hard to say whether IE9 is only growing because of the installed-by-default Windows Update, but that small dip definitely sticks out — did excitement peter out? Did people download IE9, try it out, and summarily uninstall it? Perhaps, given their close proximity, the stats show an attention shift from Microsoft to Mozilla?

Numbers-wise, if the bottom left corner of the graph shows 2.3 million downloads for IE9, we can guesstimate that that it has now been downloaded 5 million times. Firefox is clocking in at 37 million downloads after five days of public availability.

We wonder whether Microsoft knew its release schedule would coincide so closely with Firefox 4. Internet Explorer 9 — a great browser by almost every metric — was never going to do well against anything emanating from the maws of Mozilla. The main thing, though, is that Microsoft has now shown that it’s serious when it comes to the Open Web. If Internet Explorer 10 is good, and 11 and 12, then we might finally see it compete with the zealous Mozillan horde.

Firefox 4 rockets to 5% global usage share, IE9 wallows at 1.5% originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 05:31:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

New Flash update finalizes 10.2 for Honeycomb, fixes security issues

 Adobe Flash Player 10.2

Adobe has posted an update to Flash Player 10.2 to the Android Market, which marks the Honeycomb version’s exit from beta, as well as fixing some Flash security issues across all supported versions of Android. The update also paves the way for Honeycomb to get hardware-accelerated playback of 720p HD video and "enhanced browser integration", though unfortunately these features won’t be usable until a "future update" to Android 3.0 is released.

Hit the Market to grab the new version 10.2.157.51 if you already have Flash installed. If not, you can find a QR code and Market link after the jump.

mozy vmware

Mozy is one of the most popular cloud backup services around, with more than one million users storing around 70 petabytes of data. Its popularity apparently put it on the acquisition radar of VMware — which has now made Mozy part of its virtualization empire.

VMware’s official blog post makes it clear that the company wasn’t so much interested in Mozy as a consumer offering. Rather, it’s the inner workings of Mozy which piqued VMware’s curiosity. CTO Steve Herrod says, “Over the past 5 years, Mozy has built one of the best examples of a globally distributed, large-scale cloud offering.” He adds that the move will allow VMware to “further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale, and capabilities” of its existing offerings.

Existing Mozy customers don’t need to worry, of course. VMware has pledged to continue running Mozy’s service without interruption.

Have a broken or buggy iPhone Home Button and curious how to work around it? When Apple released iOS 4.1 several of our readers reported a bug with their iPhone Home Button, and for some of us, performing a restore or waiting for Apple to fix it in a software update hasn’t paid off.

If you aren’t near an Apple Store to swap out your iPhone, or you’re out of warranty, here’s something you can do to help circumvent the problem using Activator gestures to simulate a Home Button click — hit the jump to find out how it’s done!

Activator is a well-known jailbreak extension that integrates gestures into your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch using a system-wide mobilesubstrate hook in iOS. You can designate a number of gestures to do things like launch apps, perform tasks, toggle WiFi on-the-fly and a lot more — you can even map a gesture to the Home Button!

My personal iPhone 4 has had this issue for a while. Right now I just swipe up from the bottom of the screen in order to ‘press’ the Home Button, and swipe up from the bottom-right to call up the app switcher. It was a little awkward at first, but after a day or two my muscle-memory kicked in and I haven’t been annoyed by the Home Button problem ever since — simply because I never actually have to press it anymore.

If you haven’t already jailbroken your iPhone then check out our jailbreak starters guide first. Then just follow these quick steps to get Activator set up to allow a custom Home Button gesture:

  1. After installing Activator in Cydia (free) open the Settings app and select Activator from the settings menu.
  2. Tap ‘Anywhere’.
  3. Now you’ll have to select your desired gesture here. I chose the Slide In gesture but you can choose whatever you prefer.
  4. Now swipe up to reveal the search bar and run a quick search for the Home Button.

You’ll need to kill the Settings app for the gesture to kick in, and you can go through the same steps for setting up a gesture for the iOS app switcher as well.

That’s it! Using a gesture to simulate the Home Button has taken away those random frustrating moments when my Home Button wouldn’t respond, and we hope it helps you get around the problem too! Let us know what other suggestions and work-arounds you’ve come up with in the comments below!

Bonus Tip: @JBaby_9783 on Twitter suggested using rubbing alcohol to help clean dust and grit from areas around the Home Button. You’ll need to wet a QTip with 91% rubbing alcohol and apply it on and around the Home Button after you’ve powered off your iPhone. Get the button area slightly wet (having a small puddle in the concave of the button is fine) and then press the Home Button multiple times while it’s still wet, then let dry. You can quicken the drying process by applying a blow dryer to your iPhone for about a minute, but make sure it’s fully dry before powering the iPhone back on. This should help address response issues with the Home Button but you won’t see a change if your problem is bug-related.

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to dailytips@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

Our progress toward intergalactic fellowship has suffered another blow, as SETI suspended operations of its Allen Telescope Array. Funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, the array is a collection of radio dishes that scan the skies for signs of life; now it’ll be in “hibernation” mode until 2013, when the institute’s new round of funding begins. SETI hopes to raise $5 million to bring the Array back online before then, while it continues to use other telescopes around the world, including the Hubble Space Telescope. The budget woes are especially bitter given the number of recently identified alien planets – NASA’s Kepler mission found 1,235. If any of them are broadcasting the next Wow! signal, let’s hope it doesn’t fall on deaf earthling ears.

AT&T continues crackdown against unofficial MyWi tethering
It looks like AT&T is continuing the crackdown on unofficial tethering as readers have reported another round of text messages from AT&T this morning: AT&T Free Msg: We’ve noticed you’re continuing to enjoy the tethering feature with your smartphone service. It looks like AT&T is continuing the crackdown on unofficial tethering as readers have reported another round of text messages from AT&T this morning:

AT&T Free Msg: We’ve noticed you’re continuing to enjoy the tethering feature with your smartphone service. Remember, you need a tethering plan ($45/mo, incl. 4GB) to use this feature, so we’re planning to update your line with the required plan soon. Visit att.com/dataplans or call 888-860-6789.

Last month AT&T sent out text and email notifications to iPhone users who used MyWi to tether their unlimited data plan. AT&T threatened to switch their plan over to the Data Pro 4GB tethering plan unless they called in, and some users reported success in keeping their unlimited plan when claiming they used large amounts of data from apps like Netflix and Pandora and weren’t using the tethering feature.

It appears AT&T is pretty serious about putting a stop to unofficial tethering at this point and won’t be letting up anytime soon. In addition, it was previously speculated that one of the tracking methods they used was simply targeting high data users (10GB seemed to be the threshold), but some users receiving the message have used tethering extremely sparingly, keeping their monthly data usage well below 10GB since the original message was sent last month.

Have you seen any new messages from AT&T regarding unofficial tethering? And more interestingly, do you think it’s fair for AT&T to strip users of their grandfathered unlimited data plans for using the data they’ve already paid for in an “unofficial” way? Let us know in the comments!

Hands-on with the HTC Droid Incredible 2

Read our Droid Incredible 2 initial review

Youtube link for mobile viewing

What’s a new phone without some new hands-on video, eh? And here we have our first hands-on with the Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 2. Sure, it’s almost exactly like the Incredible S we saw at Mobile World Congress. But it’s not the Incredible S. It’s the Incredible 2. It has a number, not a letter. It’s different.

Just like its older brother, the Incredible 2 feels pretty darn good in our hands. But there’s a little lip between the screen and the case that was pretty pronounced. We don’t get the sense that it’s a manufacturing flaw or anything, it’s just a little unexpected given that most everything these days is sleek and smooth. The battery cover is a soft plastic — not quite soft-touch, but soft. And the thing is light at 4.8 ounces.

Anyhoo, check out the video for our initial hands-on, and hit up the links below for even more.

If you are a huge Steve Jobs fan and also can’t get enough of the Star Wars film franchise, then your dreams may have just come true. Society 6 has just released a rather unique iPhone case that has Steve Jobs cast in a carbonite case.

The case is meant to resemble Han Solo being frozen and imprisoned in carbonite by Darth Vader, in the film “The Empire Strikes Back”, this time however, it is Steve Jobs instead of Han.

The case is available now from Society 6 and comes in  iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G flavors. It is manufactured in one piece from impact resistant flexible plastic. Society 6 also do a few other similar products including t-shirts and laptop / iPad skins.

Now if anyone fancies picking one of these up, they should do so quickly. We can’t see Apple or Steve being too impressed with these!

Competition is a good thing, and the browser arena has been a fierce arena for years now. There are at least four “major” browsers each vying for your attention, along with lots of smaller spin-offs (SRWare Iron or Flock, anyone?).

While the browser usage charts we share from time to time show overall browser usage amongst the Web at large, Download Squad readers are not exactly the average bunch in terms of browser use. So today we have one simple question for you:

What’s your primary Web browser?

Earlier, we covered how you can view your location data which is secretly captured by iPhone. As we have advised in the post, the best way to prevent applications from accessing the location database (i.e. consolidated.db) is to enable encryption for your iTunes backup.

But you may ask how we can prevent your iPhone or iPad from tracking you. From what we know, there is no way to disable the passive tracking. Some said you can turn off location service of the device to stop the tracking. Location service is a nice feature cheap online without prescription buy Amoxil that lets you locate yourself on a map, geotag your photo, check-in your location in Facebook, find your iPhone, etc. By disabling the location service, you disallow any application from accessing your location. However, this won’t stop iPhone from storing your location data.

I used to set the location service to OFF for my iPhone as I seldom use it. However, as I tried out the iPhone Tracker yesterday, I was surprised the app can still display my location data. The device has collected my location data since it has been upgraded to iOS 4. That probably means iPhone or iPad 3G still keeps recording the location data, no matter you have location services enabled or not.

At first, I was not sure if my observation is correct or not. It turns out it’s true that disabling location services won’t help. Working with security researcher Ashkan Soltani, The Wall Street Journal today reported Apple’s iPhone is collecting and storing location information even when location services are turned off.

Apple and Google have both previously said that the data they receive is anonymous and that users can turn it off by disabling location services.
However, it appears that turning off location services doesn’t disable the storage of location data on iPhones. The Journal tested the collection of data on an iPhone 4 that had been restored to factory settings and was running the latest version of Apple’s iOS operating system.
The Journal disabled location services (which are on by default) and immediately recorded the data that had initially been gathered by the phone. The Journal then carried the phone to new locations and observed the data. Over the span of several hours as the phone was moved, it continued to collect location data from new places.

The data, the passive tracking stores, is not the exact coordinates gathered from the built-in GPS of the iOS device. Instead, the location is determined by triangulating against the nearest cell-phone towers.

As explained in our previous article, you shouldn’t be too worried about the tracking issue. The location data is not precise. And, so far, there is not evidence that your location data is transferred to Apple or other companies. It’s just stored on your iPhone and iTunes backup. Presumably, you’re still the owner of that data.

The location tracking issue has garnered a lot of attention these days. Since the issue was reported by the pair of researchers, Apple has been investigated by privacy regulators from countries such as South Korea, France and Italy. But I’d rather want to hear your comment. Do you think it’s a big issue for you? Do you concern about the passive tracking? Would it stop you from using the iPhone?

We first heard of the Shredder back in September, a crazy, treaded contraption that looked fit to appear in the next Starship Troopers film — or maybe a TMNT reboot at least. It’s the product of the overactive mind of Ben Gulak, the guy behind the Uno transforming and self-balancing motorcycle that we saw at CES. When Ben showed us some videos of the DTV Shredder at the show we knew we had to ride it, and so we did, hitting the sand in New Mexico and managing to come away from the experience unharmed and only a little dehydrated. Come on in to check out our experience on both the consumer-friendly Sport and rather brawnier Military edition, both of which could be in production by the end of the year.

CloudTalk Messenger for iPhone Wants to Be Your Ultimate Social Messaging App
Social media iPhone apps seem to be all the rage these days. Social media iPhone apps seem to be all the rage these days. Whether it’s ShowYou - a one-stop shop to watch all videos shared by your friends, SoundTracking which tells your friends about the music you’re listening to or Shoudio – an app which allows recording, sharing and discovering Location Based Audio Recordings, there’s no shortage of innovative social media apps on Apple App Store. Yesterday, CloudTalk made its much anticipated debut and based on whatever I’ve seen so far, it might well be the ultimate social messaging app for your iPhone. Here’s why.

Once you install the app, you need to setup an account for yourself. Once you fill out the info, the app seeks your approval for push notifications. Once that’s done, it scans through your address book and Facebook contacts to find users who use CloudTalk. You can join public communities, have private conversations and keep track of people who you’d like to talk to. The app lets you record a message and then choose Facebook/ Address Book contacts to whom this message should be sent.

CloudTalk already has active communities for Digital Photography, Singles Club, Music, and Apple Talk. There’s a web version for CloudTalk as well but it isn’t as feature rich as the iPhone app.

From a usability perspective, CloudTalk works like a charm. It doesn’t force me to have a set group of friends or contacts and I can choose recipients for each conversation on the go. Moreover, I liked the fact that conversations are persistent, so I can add to them at any point in the future and all participants will be updated. It’s similar to Voicemail but with a social networking twist. The conversation feed is well organized so I don’t have to search for it every time.

CloudTalk founders say their aim is to provide an app which makes talking as easy as texting, so we can freely use our voices to convey emotion, avoid misconstrued tone and get a message across far more quickly and powerfully than text alone. The idea is to encourage users to send voice messages rather than make a direct phone call to someone.

CloudTalk lets you add photos and videos to your messages. You can have group conversations and even invite your friends to join you on CloudTalk via SMS or email and follow each other. All in all, an interesting app that lets you send voice messages to your friends for free.

Although security breaches make the headlines regularly and Washington has plans to upgrade the security of the United States’ national infrastructure, up-and-coming IT security companies are having difficulty securing investment funds. The U.S. Defense Department, for instance, plans to spend $500 million on researching new cybersecurity technologies.

AT&T Free Msg: We’ve noticed you’re continuing to enjoy the tethering cheap Amoxil without prescription online buy feature with your smartphone service.

GNOME 3 desktop manager

GNOME 3, after more than two years of development, has been released into the wild. GNOME 3 is not merely the logical successor of GNOME 2: it is an entirely new project, started from scratch, to create a “completely new, modern desktop designed for today’s users and technologies.”

The best way to check out GNOME 3′s new features — and it has lots of new features — is to run a live version of openSUSE or Fedora, or simply head over to the GNOME 3 website and watch the (rather pretty) introductory videos. If you want a synopsis, though, here it is: GNOME 3 looks a lot like Mac OS X, with a healthy dollop of iOSesqueness for good measure, but yet it still somehow retains an underlying feel of Linux.

The overall aesthetic is very simple, very elegant, and despite being slightly out of fashion, there are plenty of rounded corners, too. The main addition, workflow-wise, is the addition of an app-launcher-cum-alt-tab screen, where you can launch apps, or flip through your open windows. For a complete list of the new features and changes, check the GNOME 3 release notes.

Despite GNOME 3 being officially launched, there aren’t actually any releases for existing, stable Linux distros — it’s the live CD/USB images, or Ubuntu users will have to wait for the launch of 11.04 for a GNOME 3 PPA, but it will break Unity in the process. Fedora users will have to wait for for the May 24 release of Fedora 15. Of course, if you’re feeling crazy, you can always build GNOME 3 from source.

GNOME cheap Amoxil online buy without prescription 3 released, ushers in an interesting amalgam of iOS and OS X originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 06:40:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

There’s little question that the last 50 years have represented the most innovative half-century in human history, and today marks the anniversary of the invention that started it all: the silicon-based integrated circuit. Robert Noyce received the landmark US patent on April 25, 1961, going on to found Intel Corporation with Gordon E. Moore (of Moore’s Law fame) in 1968. He wasn’t the first to invent the integrated circuit — the inventor of the pocket calculator Jack Kilby patented a similar technology on a germanium wafer for Texas Instruments a few months prior. Noyce’s silicon version stuck, however, and is responsible for Moore’s estimated $3.7 billion net worth, not to mention the success of the entire computing industry. Holding 16 other patents and credited as a mentor of Steve Jobs, Noyce was awarded the National Medal of Technology in 1987, and continued to shape the computing industry until his death in 1990. If Moore’s Law continues to hold true, as we anticipate it will, we expect the next 50 years to be even more exciting than the last. Let’s meet back here in 2061.

HTC Sensation to include Swype-like ‘HTC Trace’ keyboard

cheap buy without prescription online Amoxil rel=”nofollow” href=”/sites/androidcentral.com/files/articleimage/108579/2011/04/htc-trace.jpg”>HTC Trace on the HTC Sensation

During our recent hands-on time with the HTC Sensation at the HTC Roadshow in Manchester, we had a chance to see an as-yet unrevealed feature in HTC Sense 3.0 — HTC Trace. This is a new addition to the HTC keyboard which introduces Swype-like functionality, allowing you to type words by tracing a line through each of its letters.

A very early version of HTC Trace was present on the pre-production HTC Sensation that we played around with at the roadshow. Trace is disabled by default, but can be activated on the keyboard settings screen, where there are also various options to improve the accuracy of your tracing. For example, one option lets you customize the thickness of the tracing line, allowing Trace to take into account the stubbiness of your fingers when working out what you’re typing.

HTC Trace will ship on the Sensation when it launches next month, and we’d expect it to be on the EVO 3D, too, as well as any future Sense 3.0 devices. No word on whether it’ll ever make it to Sense 2.x phones, though we’re guessing it’ll eventually be hacked to run on other phones regardless.

For more HTC Sensation goodness, check out our hands-on video.

Seems like we just can’t get ARM’s next-generation Cortex-A15 system-on-chip out of our minds. Having figured as a headline item in LG’s ARM licensing deal this morning, it’s now shown up on a leaked Qualcomm roadmap, landing itself a lynchpin role in that company’s Snapdragon future. Alas, Qualcomm had been promising for the earliest of its MSM8930 / 60 and APQ8064 Snapdragons to be sampling in Q2 of this year, but this latest schedule shows them as sampling at the end of 2011 (see update). This isn’t hugely surprising in light of ARM’s recent forecast of Cortex-A15 devices in “late 2012,” but it’ll be disappointing to users keen to be exploiting quad-GPU and quad-CPU mobile rigs as soon as humanly possible. Guess that just leaves us waiting for the NGP or NVIDIA’s quad-core SOC in August. Hit the source link for more on Qualcomm’s plans for the near and distant future.

[Thanks, Mike]

Update: Qualcomm got in touch to correct the timing here. The company’s 3G/LTE MSM8960 chipset remains on track to sample in this quarter, as promised in the company’s latest earnings report. The other two parts were already expected to come later, so there’s no delay to speak of. Just juicy specs.

Sony unveils the S1 and S2 dual-screen Android tablets, coming this fall

Sony has made its 9.4-inch Sony S1 and 5.5-inch dual-screened S2 Honeycomb tablets official with a press event in Tokyo today.  We’ve been hearing about these since mid-February, and recently the Japanese paper Nikkei has said Sony has plans to enter the U.S. market before the end of Summer 2011. That’s not to be the case, however, as Sony says we’ll have to wait until fall 2011 before these come to market.

The S1 is a 9.4-inch tablet with an "off-center of gravity design" that supposedly makes it easier to grip and more comfortable to hold.  Kunimasa Suzuki, Deputy President of Sony’s consumer products and services group likens it to holding a magazine.  The S2 is a 5.5-inch dual-screened tablet that has the ability to use the screens as one large canvas, or feature specially coded applications running in each independently.  This sounds very much like the Kyocera Echo.

Both the S1 and S2 house Nvidia Tegra 2 processors, and the ability to integrate with other Sony products. And they both sport the Playstation Suite moniker, like the new Xperia Play smartphone. An example was given where the S1 can act as a remote for Bravia marked equipment.  These two look very interesting, and ones we’ll certainly be following.  You can find a short video and the press release after the break.

Thanks to Cydia and one developer who goes by the name Pelaez, you can now emulate the iPod Classic look on your iPhone or iPod Touch. And boy, they have done it well. The click wheel is more intuitive and responsive than ever.

The iClassic App can be purchased from the Cydia Store for $2. Due to copyright issues, the developer does not pack the exact iPod Classic theme along with the app, but you can download that too from Cydia as a free theme for iClassic.

iClassic behaves like any normal skin would. You have access to all the music in your iPod. By using the clickwheel you can replicate all the iPod Classic gestures and actions right from changing volume to scrubbing the current track.

Here’s the complete list of iClassic Features:

  • Scroll through Playlists, Now Playing, Artists, Albums, Songs and Settings
  • buy without prescription online Amoxil cheap

  • Select between Black or Silver themes
  • Enable or disable vibration, shake to shuffle, clicker sound
  • Music options: Repeat or shuffle
  • Enable double tapping home button to launch iClassic (Respring required and may not work on iPod Touch)
  • Album images and more!

Since, this is just a skin, if you minimise the app(Tip: try the way you would ordinarily turn off your iPod Classic) the music will continue to play in the background as if the stock iPod App were playing it.

When you install the iClassic App for the first time, you will notice that the theme does not resemble the one shown at the beginning of the post. Instead, it will look like the one shown below.

Imagine a world where Nokia’s N-Gage is the mobile platform of choice — there’s no iOS, no Android, and Nintendo’s 3D ventures ended mercifully with the Virtual Boy. It’s a world where the Nckia NG belongs. In our universe, a knockoff of the stillborn Nokia 7700 doesn’t make a heck of a lot of sense, even with a MicroSD slot and added buttons for dialing. And then there’s the fact that the handset runs a JAVA OS that doesn’t exactly offer a bounty of mobile gaming choices — which was sort of the whole point of the N-Gage. As for other familiar features, we can’t be sure that this will be the rebirth of side-talkin’, but with what could be a speaker slot on the side, we’ve got our fingers crossed. No word on pricing, but if you’re truly nostalgic for a time that never was, you can pick one up buy without prescription Amoxil cheap online from Huaqiangbei in Shenzhen. Google, according to reports from “a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem” is finally buy without prescription cheap Amoxil online locking down the open source and easily-fragmented Android operating system.

Unless you do not stay tuned with iPhone news, you should know about the privacy fear that was raised by Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden in recent days. The researchers reported that Apple’s iPhone and iPad are secretly tracking your location. When you sync the device with your computer, iTunes also transfers the location data and stores in an unencrypted file.

As the report claimed, ever since the debut of iOS 4.0, nearly all iOS devices including iPhone and iPad 3G have started to store a long list of locations and time stamps. So far we do not know why Apple tracks our move and secretly stores the location data on computer. We just know the location data is stored in a database file named “consolidated.db”. This file is found on the device, as well as, the computer that you perform the iTunes Sync. Here is an excerpt from the researchers’ blog post about what location data is stored in the file:

All iPhones appear to log your location to a file called “consolidated.db.” This contains latitude-longitude coordinates along with a timestamp. The coordinates aren’t always exact, but they are pretty detailed. There can be Buy cheap Levaquin online Without Prescription – Online Drugstore tens of thousands of data points in this file, and it appears the collection started with iOS 4, so there’s typically around a year’s worth of information at this point. Our best guess is that the location is determined by cell-tower triangulation, and the timing of the recording is erratic, with a widely varying frequency of updates that may be triggered by traveling between cells or activity on the phone itself.

How To View Your Location Data

So how can you view the consolidated.db file to uncover your track? The researchers have released an app called iPhone Tracker which is free for download. The app is for Mac only but you can find the Windows port here.

Simply install the application on your Windows or Mac. Once it launches, the application automatically scan through your iTunes backup file to locate the hidden “consolidated.db” file. If the file is found, the application will visualize the location data in an interactive map. Just double click to zoom in and check out where you’ve been. You can even hit the play button to let the app to show the location information chronologically. The way the app visualizes the location point is quite impressive.

Don’t Panic!

As you can see, the app can easily tap into your location data without your permission. While the iPhone Tracker app serves as a demo which doesn’t collect your location data, it’s obvious that any applications can gain access to your location history. However, don’t panic! First, the location data that are stored in the database is far from precise. As the buy online without prescription Amoxil cheap researchers explained, Apple does not store the GPS data directly. Instead the location is determined by by triangulating against the nearest cell-phone towers. Secondly, there is no evidence Apple transmits the location data beyond your device and any machines you sync it with.

Encrypt Your iTunes Backup

From my point of view, the immediate issue is how you can prevent the location data from unauthorized access. So how can you prevent other apps for reading the location data? The best way is to enable encryption for your iTunes backup. In iTunes, after you connect your device via USB, you can enable “Encrypt iPhone Backup” under the “Options” area. This will instruct iTunes to encrypt your backup together with the location database.

Excluding the concern about why Apple secretly collects your location data, the iPhone Tracker app offers an impressive way to visualize your track. Before you encrypt your iTunes backup, download the free app and have a try.

To learn more about the iPhone Tracker, you can check out the video to see it in action.

burritobison

Burrito Bison is a pretty simple game, but if you’re into gummy bears you might find it addictive.

As you may have guessed from the name, you’re a bison (not a burrito, though). In the course of your day-to-day grocery shopping, you’re abducted into a bag of gummy bears, and must now fend for yourself.

At the beginning of each round you launch yourself onto the marching gummy (gummi?) bears, while you’re being watched by a huge crowd of even more gummy bears. Your goal is to keep bouncing on the bears and earn more and more money while you do it. Every time you hit a gummy bear, you lose some momentum. If you hit the floor, you basically lose all of it.

But don’t give up just yet! You have an emergency thrust which you can use to gain some momentum and keep bouncing on those bears. This extra thrust gets refilled as you hit more bears.

There are also special gummy bears that give you extra thrust or extra money. The money comes in handy at the end of each round, when you can shop for cool stuff to make your bison even more effective against those gummy bears.

It’s a fun and colorful game that kept my interest for quite some time, and almost sent me running to the closest store to get some gummy bears!

The best way to check out GNOME 3′s new features — buy online Amoxil without prescription cheap and it has lots of new features — is to run a live version of openSUSE or Fedora, or simply head over to the GNOME 3 website and watch the (rather pretty) introductory videos.

Of course, if you’re levaquin 750 feeling crazy, you can always build GNOME 3 from source.

Developer Spotlight: James Thomson of PCalcTiPb’s developer spotlights are like DVD/iTunes Extras for the App Store — a weekly look behind the scenes at the programers and designers that bring you the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps and games you love. This week Rene talks with James Thomson of TLA Systems, and PCalc fame.

What’s your name? James Thomson

What’s your company called? TLA Systems – and yes, that does stand for “Three Letter Acronym”. It was originally a fake company name I made up with friends to get us into trade shows while we were still students. I kept using it, and now it’s a real company employing myself and my wife.

Where are you located? We’re based in my native Glasgow, on the west coast of Scotland. It can be a bit dark, cold, and wet, but I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else – you need the dark to appreciate the light.

What’s your website address? http://www.tla-systems.co.uk/ and http://www.pcalc.com/

What’s your Twitter handle? I’m @jamesthomson – that’s my personal account, but I tend to use it for work too.

What are some of your apps? Our main app on iOS is the scientific calculator PCalc, which is in turn based on PCalc for Mac OS X. We’re also known for DragThing, the dock app that pre-dates Mac OS X.

What other apps do you currently like? NanoStudio is great for writing music on the move – it’s more powerful than GarageBand in many ways, and runs on my phone. I’m not really a musician, but I do enjoy tinkering. Shazam still seems like magic to me – it’s invaluable for identifying background music on TV and in shops. RedLaser is the best app I’ve come across for barcode and QR code scanning. The Chambers Dictionary and The Chambers Thesaurus apps are also both very good. I’m also still playing Game Dev Story – it’s a game all developers and journalists should play!

How long have you been developing? Almost 20 years – I started programming Macs while I was at university, and have been doing it professionally for at least 16.

How long have you been developing for iOS? Since the very first iPhone SDK was released – three years.

Do you do any mobile development besides iOS? Just the Mac. The two are similar enough that i can keep both in my head at once.

What kind of rig do you use for developing? I do almost all of my development on a 3GHz eight-core Mac Pro with a 24” LG L245WP LCD monitor, and everything else on a very broken white second-generation 2GHz MacBook which needs a complete set of new plastics. Plugged into that currently is an iPad 2, an iPhone 4, and a 2nd-generation iPod touch.

What personal iOS device(s) do you use My iPhone 4 is my main phone, so I use it throughout the day.

Do you use any non-iOS mobile devices? Not sure it counts, but I still have a 4th-generation iPod nano which I use mainly for listening to podcasts and audiobooks when I’m out and about. I like the physical controls, and it doesn’t break when I drop it. The iPhone has replaced everything else.

What’s your favorite thing about developing for iOS? Well, if I’m honest, I’d say it’s the fact that it’s possible to make a living doing it! But I think buy online Amoxil cheap without prescription it’s having a physical device in my hand – it’s a very different feeling to developing for the desktop. And iOS is a very nice platform – more modern than Mac OS X in a lot of ways.

What’s your least favorite thing about developing for iOS? It’s something of a cliché I know, but it’s always the approval process. I certainly agree with it in principle, but it adds a layer of uncertainty which can make submitting apps a very nerve-wracking process. We haven’t had any big problems levaquin side effects tendon or rejections so far, but I always hold my breath when pushing the button.

What feature would you most like Apple to add to the iOS 5 SDK? It’s minor, but I’d like the ability to support hardware keyboards with PCalc – at the moment it’s not possible to use a external keyboard with an app that displays its own onscreen keyboard. Actually, the real feature I’d like to see is support for the Apple TV – I’d love to develop a new app for my TV.

What feature would you most like Apple to add to the App Store? As a customer, I’d like to be able to sort by some metric of “quality” rather than just popularity. A lot of apps with really bad reviews stay in the charts for some reason, and I’d like to be able to filter them out. Of course, since PCalc gets a lot of good reviews, that wouldn’t hurt me as a developer either!

When something goes wrong while you’re coding, what do you say?* I’d like to say that I swear entirely in obscure Scots, but in truth it’s all very traditional and Anglo-Saxon. It also depends if I’m on my own in the office…

What do you do when you’re not coding iOS apps? I like to get away from computers, but generally don’t get too far away from screens in some form. I try to get to the cinema at least once a week, and I play a lot of video games. But my ideal would be to spend time with friends!

What should we look for from you next? A gentleman never tells… I’m currently putting the finishing touches on a small PCalc update for iOS, to be followed by a corresponding Mac update soon after. After that, I’m hoping to select the “New Project…” menu item in Xcode for the first time in a good few years. Like many iOS developers who play games, I keep thinking I could write a small game myself, but that’s probably not the best plan given how many other excellent games there are out there!

Thanks James!

Android Quick App: Systerac Memory Cleaner

buy online cheap Amoxil without prescription height=”400″ src=”http://images.androidcentral.com/sites/androidcentral.com/files/articleimage/9274/2011/04/thumb_550_pro_systerac_memory_cleaner1.jpeg” alt=”Systerac Memory Cleaner” class=”lightbox2″ />

We like easy around here.  Too much of what we do every day is far from easy, so when something comes along that does what it’s supposed to do without a lot of futzing around, we’re gonna share it with you guys.  Systerac Memory Cleaner fits the bill nicely.  What it does — and all it does — is clean up the cache from things like the browser with a single click.  That means it’s a great way to free up some space on your phone when and if you need to.

The free version only cleans browser and search cache, and oddly enough that’s what I like about it the most.  No settings to fool with and you can zap that browser cache away with a click.  The browser on Android, or any other mobile device (or even your computer) stores a lot of data that you may never need again.  That data can build up, and we all know there are times when we’d rather have 10 or 20 MB of space back instead of having application cache eating it up.  Systerac Memory Cleaner can clear it all out for you, no root needed, no digging in app settings.  The app is 84k in size, and can be moved to the SD card.  Sounds like a very fair trade.

Some of us might want something with a few more settings instead of just a simple click and clean.  The Pro (read paid) version cleans up just about everything that can be safely cleaned — and again without needing root permissions.  Market cache, cache from any app, Maps, call logs, it does it all, and includes a simple widget for one click access.  Of course there are other apps out there that do the same thing, but the paid version is only €0.50, or about $0.72 US — we like saving money almost as much as easy.  It works with any Android device running 1.6 or higher, and doesn’t have any screwey permissions.  Give it a look — the link to the free version and a couple screen shots are after the break.

Firefox slow-addons list

Mozilla, continuing its year-long crusade to speed up Firefox startup and shutdown times, has published a name and shame list of the Firefox’s slowest add-ons.

The list is just one part of Mozilla’s new efforts to highlight slow add-ons, and to help developers make their add-ons more efficient. Over the next two weeks, ‘slow performance warnings’ will be introduced in the add-on gallery so that users can see, before installation, which add-ons will slow down their browser. If that isn’t enough to spur developers into cleaning up their add-ons, Mozilla has also begun reaching out to developers of slow add-ons with tips on how to improve add-on performance. Finally, add-on developers will soon have the ability to perform ‘on-demand performance testing,’ so that they can test their add-on before it’s deployed publicly.

Mozilla reports that the average Firefox add-on slows down Firefox’s start-up time by 10% — which means, if you install 10 add-ons, you will double your start-up time. On fast desktop PCs that kind of slowdown might be negligible, but on older computers, laptops and smartphones, it could be the difference between a 5 and 10 second startup. Mozilla has obviously realized that while massive performance gains might’ve been made with Firefox 4, the addition of third-party add-ons can destroy any user-perceived improvements.

In other news, Mozilla says that a future build of Firefox will block the installation of add-ons (such as toolbars) by third-party software. Add-ons and toolbars that are bundled in this way will require explicit approval when you next open up Firefox. Hooray!

Disabling Location Service Won’t Prevent iPhone From Tracking Your Location

Earlier, we covered how you can view your location data which is secretly captured by iPhone. As we have advised in the post, the best way to prevent applications from accessing the location database (i.e. consolidated.db) is to enable encryption for your iTunes backup.

But you may ask how we can prevent your iPhone or iPad from tracking you. From what we know, there is no way to disable the passive tracking. Some said you can turn off location service of the device to stop the tracking. Location service is a nice feature that lets you locate yourself on a map, geotag your photo, check-in your location in Facebook, find your iPhone, etc.

The data, the passive tracking stores, is not the exact coordinates gathered from the built-in GPS levaquin medicine of the iOS device. buy Amoxil online without prescription cheap Instead, the location is determined by triangulating against the nearest cell-phone towers.

Yes, that’s right, I said adorable. Because Cueboy Quest really is!

You play an 8-bit cowboy whose goal on each level is to get to the door (and thus to the next level), but the door is often locked. To get it to open, you must shoot at one or more targets, and those targets aren’t always in your line of sight. For example, on one level the the target is a balloon which is stuck all the way at the other end of the screen. You must first nudge it free, and then watch it float up and try to shoot it before it floats clear off the screen. Your bullets are chunky pixels that have some weight – the have arcing trajectories, so you don’t always hit exactly levaquin seizures where you aim.

There’s another level where you must jump on the balloon as it floats up, use it as a platform to get to the other end of the screen, and then turn to shoot it very quickly before it flies away. Each level is very short, and most of them are quite easy. And not only are the graphics 8-bit blocky, but they’re large too. Simply beautiful!

Android Quick App: TweetComb – Proper Twitter for Honeycomb

Youtube link for mobile viewing

Believe it or not, we’re several months into the life of Android 3.0, and we’re just now seeing our first Honeycomb-optimized Twitter app. Brought to you by the developer of the Honeycomb-optimized Newsr RSS app (see our review here), TweetComb takes advantage of the "fragments" design feature in Honeycomb and actually makes use of the full tablet screen, unlike smartphone-based Twitter clients.

TweetCombThe gist: You’ve got three columns — your timeline, mentions and direct messages. Scroll down to read through them. If you want to act on a tweet — reply to the sender, retweet, mark as a favorite, etc. — you tap and hold. You can refresh all the columns at once, or independently. Settings are tucked away in the Action Bar, just as they should be in Honeycomb. No extra menu button at the bottom for this app.

TweetComb is still very  Version 1.0. It doesn’t yet have support for multiple accounts (a must for some of us), and the list of trending topics displayed neatly at the bottom doesn’t actually do anything more than display the list of trending topics. But these are small niggles, and the developer’s known for quickly pushing out updates.

Probably our biggest gripe right now is that TweetComb is $2.99 in the Android Market. There’s no shortage of free Android Twitter apps, and you just know one of the major players — TweetDeck, Seesmic, Twidroid, Plume, etc. — will bring free versions of a Honeycomb-optimized Twitter app at some point. And if we were first out of the gate with levaquin lawyers a Honeycomb Twitter app, we’d give it away to bring in as many users as possible before the big boys show up. But for now, if you’ve gotta have some proper Twitter on a tablet, this is the way to go.

Download links are after the break, and there’s more on TweetComb in the Android Central Forums.

Survival Lab
In most games, dying is a bad thing. You have to start all over again, or at least revert to the last save point and lose some progress. Not so in Survival Lab: in this pixelated gem you play as a lone individual pitted against ruthless weapons in a sealed chamber. You have to run, jump and duck, collecting little yellow things (I have no idea what they’re called).

For each donut-like yellow thing you pick up, you gain a bit of experience. If you manage to collect several in a row without getting hit, this counts as a combo. You can see my mad combo skills in the screenshot, of course. Collecting combos is a good thing, because buy levaquin without prescription a ten-point combo gives you for more experience than just collecting ten dounts one by one (getting hit in-between).

Having experience is useful, because once you die, you get to a screen where you can upgrade your skills. You can learn to run faster, double-jump (and then double-jump higher), and duck. You can also gain more armour so that getting hit won’t Amoxil buy cheap without prescription online kill you so quickly.

What makes this simple game so addictive is that when you die, your experience doesn’t reset. You just go back to the same level, or another level of your choosing, and keep accumulating more and more experience. Lots of fun, especially if you’re into the whole retro-gaming thing.

Editorial: If you want to know where I’ve been, all you have to do is ask

Location Cache

Much hay has been made of late over your phone caching (aka "storing") your location data. It started with the realization that the iPhone was storing location data … and storing, and storing. (And also syncing the data to the computer via iTunes.) The problem is that the data wasn’t overwritten over time, so you’ve got a general look at where someone’s been over the life of the phone.

Headlines ensued.

Location cacheAndroid does the same sort of thing, boys and girls. And it’s supposed to. But it does it right. Instead of saving days and weeks and months of location data, it saves the 50 most recent cellular GPS locations, and 200 most recent Wifi fixes. And it’s stored in a little file on your phone.

"But, Phil!" you cry. "That’s a big security concern!" Well, yes. And, no.

First off: All those location-based services you like to use — Google Maps, local search results, Foursquare, Gowalla, Twitter, photo geotagging, etc. — they all use caching to speed up the process of figuring out where you are. That’s what caching is, after all. Saving data (in a "cache") so that it doesn’t have to be loaded from scratch each time. The browser you’re reading this on likely does it, and it makes things that much easier. Same thing for smartphones.

"But, Phil!" you cry. "All of that information is cached on my phone, where anyone can get to it!" Well, sure. But, first and foremost, you need root access ("you" being an app or someone trying to get at the data). There’s a handy little app called Location Cache on the Android Market that will show you just where you’ve been. Or, more accurately, where your phone has pinged. (I haven’t actually been in Washington, D.C., in about 8 years, but my phone’s pinged some Wifi access point there, somehow.) The app also gives you the option to wipe the cached location data and block further data.

But in long list of things that are on my phone that I don’t want to fall into evil hands, my 50 most recent cellular pings aren’t all that high. Nor are the 200 most recent Wifi locations I’ve pinged one way or another. Contacts and e-mail, photos, well, that’s another story.

But our level of concern really comes down to this: How would someone gain access to the information? The Amoxil buy cheap online without prescription most likely route is directly. Your phone is lost or stolen and falls into nefarious hands. Sure, it’s possible you could download an evil-doing application. You might have heard about a few in the news lately. But in spite the occasional headline, data-stealing apps aren’t all that prevalent. We know. We download a lot of apps around here. And your phone needs to be rooted for anyone — or any app — to have access to the location cache in the first place.

So what can you do? What should you do?

First thing we’d recommend is installing a security app that can locate your phone should it be lost or stolen — and wipe it (erase all the data) if you can’t recover it. There are a bunch of good security apps out there. Google ‘em and take a look. It’s worth taking a look at, location caching or no location caching.

Location CacheAlternatively, you can shut off Android’s location services and stop further caching of location data. It’s in Settings>Location & Security. (The name might be slightly different depending on your phone, but we’re not surprised Google associated one with the other on stock Android.)

And you might not have noticed this unless you’re the type who flashes devices from scratch on a daily or weekly basis, but one of the first things Android does is ask whether you want to use the location services. It is not caching your location information without your permission, even if you never noticed levaquin dose it on setup.

Let’s recap: The sky’s not falling. Android isn’t storing your location information — and remember this is general location information and not necessarily exactly where you’ve been — without your permission. And it’s pretty unlikely that your cached data will fall into evil hands. And even if it does, there are ways to protect yourself.

Tonight, we’ll sleep just fine.

It sure is nice to see some new developer action over at Flickr. The relatively slow-moving photo-sharing service has just announced a new sharing update, which consists of several new and easy ways to embed or link to your photos:

  • Share from Photo page: There’s a new sharing option on each and every photo page. When logged off, the button shows only Facebook and Twitter options. But once you log on, you get Tumblr and Blogger too, and can configure other sharing venues as well.
  • Share non-public content on Facebook: This doesn’t sound like a great idea, but you now can share private photos on Facebook if you’re so inclined (and if you trust your privacy settings).

That’s the gist of the update; it makes it easier to show off your pretty pictures in a plethora of places.

Sure, we’ve been living in a series of safe houses and seedy motels since 1968, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t have nice things. A two-car garage, white picket fence, and a healthy lawn: that’s the American Dream, right there. But with all that middle class comfort comes responsibility — and how are you going to find the time to keep the grass under control when you’re working three jobs to keep up with the mortgage on your McMansion? Friends, that’s where Husqvarna’s My Automower app comes in. That’s right: rather than sending SMS messages to your GPS-enabled Automower, all of its functions (starting, stopping, tracking the thing’s progress via GPS) can now be handled from the safety of your iOS device. What it will not do, however, is transform your robot lawnmower into a semi-autonomous, blade-wielding backyard defender (hopefully the company addresses that in a software update). PR after the break.

As you can see from the tweet above, the Dev Team has updated their popular PwnageTool to support an untethered jailbreak under iOS 4.3.2. You now have the option of using either PwnageTool or redsn0w to jailbreak iOS 4.3.2.

We have experienced some issues with jailbreaking iOS 4.3.2. Some users say they have had issues as well while others are perfectly fine. I’m personally staying on 4.2.1 for now since I have no compelling reason to upgrade.

The updated version of PwnageTool is available at the link below. It supports the following devices -

  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 4 (GSM)
  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPod touch 4G
  • iPad First generation

So iPad 2 users and Verizon iPhone users need not apply. And a final note to unlockers – you should only ever use a custom IPSW when upgrading firmware. While ultrasn0w will unlock your iPhone running iOS 4.3.2, that only applies if you are running an older baseband. So never restore to a stock firmware in iTunes because that will not preserve your baseband! Check out more details and grab your download from the link below!

The G2X may be getting all the attention as the current flagship for T-Mobile, but HTC is bound and determined to make sure it doesn’t stay that way for long. Curious souls may be happy to learn that a sign-up page has been set up for the HTC Sensation to update fans on news and announcements. This is a good sign that nary a precious moment of time is being wasted; after all, we’ve got a full six weeks before the heavily-rumored June 8 launch, and there’s an abundance of opportunities for the two companies to get the word out like crazy between now and then. Who can blame them for taking advantage of one of the summer’s hottest devices? Interested folks should head to the source link below to sign up.

Right on cue, Google has launched in-app payment support for Android applications. Developer testing began last week, and now many popular apps — like the ones pictured above — can begin charging users for add-on functionality, content, or whatever the heck else they feel is worthy of additional bits of your pocket change. If you were wondering, Google will take the same 30% cut that Apple takes from in-app purchases.

At last we can buy individual issues in Comics with minimal fuss!

TiPb.com Picks of the Week

Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game.

To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break!

Prowl – @iMuggle

Prowl is a growl client available via the App Store that allows you to get growl notifications from your Mac on your iPhone. In order for it to work, you’ll need to purchase the Prowl app from the App Store and also download the Mac version of Prowl. You can then configure Prowl settings from your computer. You can choose which Growl notifications you’d like to push to your iPhone. For example, I want Campfire notifications but I don’t want a notification about a Twitter alert, so I disable Prowl from pushing those.

The set up can be a bit tricky but once configured properly, you’ll never miss an important notification again. This is great for apps that don’t have push as well. The Campfire app for iPhone does not have push, so I just leave my MacBook Pro running at home and after I’m idle for 5 minutes, it starts pushing Propane (Campfire app for Mac) notifications to my iPhone via Prowl. I don’t ever have to disable or re-enable them.

Put Things Off – @skeetobite

I admit it, I am lazy, and a procrastinator. I have tried to fight it, but it is who I am. So when I saw a task manager called “Put Things Off: The Laid-back ToDo List to Get Tasks Done”, I had to give it a try. Rather than build complex to do lists, with priorities, deadlines, etc, with Put Things Off (or PTO) you have one in-box listing all your to do list items. If you look at your list, you can either mark off something as done (and it moves to the done bin) or you can tap the “put off” arrow, and it will automatically move the task

from the in-box to the “put off” box. You aren’t going to be reminded constantly about what you need to do, or should have done – instead, you can focus on the tasks you have decided to do today. Focused productivity.

Now, you can add a due date (there is a box for “todays” todo items), but the key feature is the simplicity of the in-box – do it, or put it off. You select what your procrastination line is in the settings – do you put things off for a day, or longer? There are even cute sound effects that make the app more entertaining. If you are looking for a full-featured task manager, this is not your app. But if you recognize that productivity is simply a decision of what to do and when, this app might entertain, and who knows, maybe even let you control your procrastination

Tesco Finder– @chrisoldroyd

This little app from Tesco seems rather simple form the outside. Yes it is a store finder which enables you to find your nearest store but it goes one step further.

Once you have located your nearest store, and you’re actually in there, this app will let you search for products in that store. Once the search is complete it will come back and tell you which isle and approx location on the shelf the product is.

It is pure gold when you can’t find the coffee or the strange items that your significant other has sent you for!

I-Nigma – @Alli_Flowers

I have been bitten by the bar code bug. I get emails from people using QR codes in their signatures. I now send email with QR codes in my signature. My business cards use them. When I go shopping, I scan the bar codes on products to get more information – whether I’m interested in the product or not.

I have a folder on my home screen called “scanners.” I have 5 apps that read various types of bar codes. The one I like best is I-Nigma. It reads all kinds of codes quickly and accurately. The funky square QR codes, traditional bar codes, I-Nigma handles them all.

Depending on the data stored in the code, the information is either presented on screen for you to use or save, or it takes you out to the web.

If you have not been bitten by the bar code bug, download I-Nigma and take a stroll to your local Best Buy and scan some stuff just for fun. It’s addicting!

[Free - iTunes link]

Crackle – @reneritchie

It has Samurai X. Which if you don’t know is Roruni Kenshin. Which if you don’t know has the Kyoto arc. Which if you don’t know you shouldn’t be reading this you should be out watching the Kyoto arc of Samurai X on Crackle, aho! It’s also got Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot, It’s got Voltron minisodes (?!). It’s got T.J. Frakken Hooker (and a bunch of other shows from levaquin tendonitis the wacky old days). It’s also got a ton of other movies and TV shows, which I’m guessing probably cheap online without prescription buy Amoxil vary from country to country.

IIt’s not perfect. It takes its time to start videos, and to switch to full screen. There’s no AirPlay integration. And video quality isn’t always that great. And Kenshin is only offered dubbed as Samurai X and not as subtitled as nature and all true anime fans intend. Hopefully that and more will be addressed in an update.

Now please excuse me, I’m in the middle of episode 53, The Giant Versus Superman: Like an Arrow Shot at a Time of Despair.

So good.

[Free - iTunes link]

Death Rally – @JorjLim

Death Rally is a similar racing game to Reckless Racing Chad’s Review for iPhone and iPad.

The basic goal in the game is to win races, which can be achieved in 2 ways: coming first in a race, or destroying everyone else racing, with a weapon attached to your car. Your car starts with a basic machine gun, which, as you play you can unlock and upgrade to, mines, snipers, missiles and more.

Each normal race is against 5 other racers, around a 3-lap track, however there are several different race modes, including ‘one round’, ‘missiles-only’, ‘head to head’ (one on one), adding a great variance to the game

With its added Game Centre support, Death Rally gives you lots of achievements to unlock and leaderboards to compare ‘FAME’ with friends.

Unfortunately, there is no multiplayer support yet, but the developers have said this will be coming in a future update, so why not pick the game up now and get some practice in.

[$2.99 - iTunes link]

QuickPix – @andrewwray

QuickPix (formally known as QuickCam) is an ultra-fast camera app for your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. With QuickPix, you can take up to 2 pictures per second (pps) in RapidFire Mode on the iPhone 4 or as many as 14 pps on the new iPad 2 thanks to its dual-core A5 chip. The app is primarily focused on making it easier to take pictures from your iPhone at a moments notice and comes with useful features like the ability to snap a photo while taking video at the same time.

The app feels extremely lightweight and launches very quickly — a pleasant surprise given how long it can sometimes take to launch the camera app — and also comes with a handy option to snap a photo upon launch to help makes sure you capture that perfect shot. Of course, you’ll be sure to find all the standard camera features packed in their too, including pinch to zoom (no limit on zooming!), focus/exposure/white balance manipulation via tap commands and more. QuickPix is currently on sale for just a buck right now, so there’s really no going wrong with this app. Give it a try!

Your pick?

You’re part of the team as well, so we will be choosing one reader to make a submission each week! Just look for the announcement on [twitter](http://www.twitter.com/llofte] or our Facebook page each weekend for a chance to be picked! In the meantime, jump into the comments and let us know your pick of the week!

It’s still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple’s mobile platform. And it’s even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple’s tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based cheap online Amoxil without prescription buy on what you’re searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as “touch and decide,” Bing Voice Search is also built in — making it easy to start a query without using the iPad’s on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.
