google talk guru answersBots — like the kind which automate IRC rooms and Google Wave — are a good thing to know about. There are plenty of useful bots worth knowing about, too, including the Google Talk Guru.

Just add guru@googlelabs.com to your GTalk buddies, and you can start firing off questions. Lifehacker suggests that the same types of queries supported by Google SMS will work, though we didn’t have any luck getting a response out of the Guru with phrases like “score detroit red wings” or “sushi R3N 1Y1.”

Still, Guru does answer a good variety of questions and it works right within your favorite IM app. It’s well worth adding to your friend list, especially for getting answers on the go on your mobile device of choice.

Motorola Droid Pro getting its Gingerbread update

Motorola Droid Pro Gingerbread

The rumors are true, folks. While your phone likely is still languishing with Froyo (hey, could be worse), the Motorola Droid Pro (read our full review) is getting its Gingerbread update. And why shouldn’t it? We found the Droid Pro to be a more-than capable (if a little small) 3.1-inch Android smartphone, with the front-facing QWERTY keyboard that so many of us had been wanting.

Anyhoo, back to the update. Looks like it’s Android 2.3.3 (Build number 4.5.1-110-VNS-11, if you’re into that sort of thing). You’ll have the updated version of Motorola’s Blur skin (which isn’t the worst thing in the world), as well as all the tweaks that Gingerbread can muster.

Thanks, Eric!

Look at what one curious tipster stumbled upon while thumbing through Best Buy’s mobile app — it’s the five-inch version of Samsung’s soon to be released Galaxy Player. The PMP is, for most intents and purposes, the Galaxy S handset devoid of that pesky 3G and calling functionality — in fact, it’s still known as the Galaxy S WiFi elsewhere in the world. Priced at $270, according to the app, the 8GB touchscreen player has two cameras (a VGA on the front and and 3.0 megapixel on the rear), a microSD slot, and an FM tuner. Back in March, we heard that the music player would be hitting our shores this spring, between this and its FCC appearance a couple of months back, we’ve got our fingers crossed that it will still make it in under the wire.

[Thanks, Josafat]

I wrote a book in 2004 about hackers, spammers, and other nerds and I thought I’d like to share it with the world. It’s currently available on Amazon and B&N and is $9.99 for the print edition and an inexplicable $9.49 in the Kindle edition. It is apparently not available for the Nook. The book is 7 years old and is nearly out of print. It is about spammers, hackers, and viruses and I wrote it for a general audience like my dad who may or may not be all that technically savvy. It’s not a How-To as much as an exploration of the personalities in hacking.

You might even be an avid fan of Mobile Safari on your Apple iPad, but if you’re too addicted to Chrome on your desktop device, we’ve got to tell you that your favorite desktop browser is now available on your favorite tablet too! Take a bow for iChromy!

Though the thing doesn’t come straight from the Google guys, it’s yet not that far from the ripping desktop version! Some of what it has to offer in its features-list is a set of gems that’ll be like déjà vu while you fall in love with those ‘first-by-Chrome’ features on the iPad version, all over again.

Ominibox

Do you like your address bar to also act as your big-bad-booty search engine text box where you can just put your search terms and hit return? And you also like it because it saves important space on your browser? You have it here on iChromy too! WIN-WIN, Ominibox!

Next is, the omniscient tabs in Chrome – always sitting on extreme top of your screen, with no need for an additional title bar, and all tabs collectively forming a replacement for the conventional title bar and hide the address bar. Hence more space for the web content and more room for reading. When you feel the need for the address bar, just tap the tab and ‘boom’ comes the address bar in a flash, just as you can see below!

Offline Reading and Social Sharing

What’s more that’s out of the extraordinary? The services it comes with! It’s up to you now, whether to read it later (offline) via the “Read It Later” service or just push the web page you’re viewing on your iPad to the highly renowned Instapaper services, which is also there in the offerings; apart from others such as Google Reader, Evernote, Pinboard and your daily social sharing band wagon of Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr etc, all there, in one cute little iChromy.

Context Search

We might also want to tell you that iChromy lets you directly search from the context menu. And you would always love the open link in new tab option which comes with iChromy as you long press a web link and opt for various opening options that are offered by the browser.

It’s not Perfect but… it’s Free!

Anything bad about iChromy? Yes. Currently, only 10 bookmarks are shown in the bookmark popover window.

Apart from Chrome’s thunder pace, what’s more that can take me close to getting this app at last? The price. It’s free. It’s priceless.

Why would a group of researchers develop a table full of rods that mimic the movements of microscopic hairs? It’s a fair question, and Keio University’s Yusuke Kamiyama certainly doesn’t offer up much in the way of real world applications for such technology. He is, however, happy to demonstrate the cool functionality of the metallic cilium, which appear to drift around as though underwater, until coming into contact with an external stimuli. The rods react to touch by congregating near the area of contact, with movements executed by biometal rods that communicate with an external PC. Scientists hope that research from the project will be useful at some point, but in the meantime, at least we know where to turn if we get a major mucus blockage. Video after the break.

Developer Spotlight: Lin Jinjie of PhocusTiPb’s developer spotlights are like DVD/iTunes Extras for the App Store — a weekly look behind the scenes at the programers and designers that bring you the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps and games you love. This week Rene talks with Lin Junjie.

What’s your name Lin Junjie. It’s a Chinese name, so Lin is the last name and Junjie is my given name. Also happens to be exactly the same as a popular Chinese pop singer, so I get quite a number of wrongly directed tweets from his fan girls or people telling the whole world what song they’re listening to.

What’s your company’s name? Phocus LLP, and its main business here in Singapore is photography (explained later).

Where are you based? I’m based in Singapore, a really tiny island on the equator where the only seasons are rainy or sunny.

What’s your website address? http://www.dueapp.com

What’s your Twitter ID? Company account at @dueapp, personal account at @jjlin

What apps do you make? Currently just one: Due for iPhone and iPad.

What apps, other than your own, are currently among your favorites? Carcassonne, Instapaper, Camera+, Simplenote, OmniFocus for iPad.

How long have you been a developer? I was very late to the party. I started developing only less than a year ago in July 2010. That was about a month after my graduation from communication school, and a year after I started my first business—a photography school based in Singapore.

I’ve always been a geek since my Dad bought our first PC in the 90s, but it was only in July 2010 that I decided to take time off my photography business to pursue my childhood interest of programming. So I started picking up Objective-C and embarked on my first project, a reminder app that eventually became known as Due.

What primary computer setup do you use for your iOS development? I’m using a 3.5-year-old MacBook Pro 15″ non-unibody, propped up on a Rain mStand, hooked up to an external monitor and a Bluetooth keyboard most of the time. Most of Due was made while I was using a 22″ Dell monitor on dual-monitor setup. I recently replaced the 22″ with a Dell 30″ and went with a single monitor setup instead. I find a large single monitor works a lot better with Xcode 4′s single layout design than two smaller ones.

The other major thing I did recently was to replace my MBP’s hard disk drive with an SSD, and now it feels like it could last me another 2 years before Apple could tempt me with their new notebooks.

(Photo of my desktop a year ago. Since then the 22″ monitor has been replaced with a 30″, and the iPhone 3GS with an iPhone 4.)

What iOS device(s) do you personally use most often? iPhone by a huge margin. For some reasons I still find myself uncomfortable to be whipping out an iPad during my commutes, even if I have both the iPhone and iPad with me.

While iPhones are everywhere here in Singapore, the iPads are relatively uncommon. Their large and super bright displays also attract a lot attention from curious strangers. So I tend to feel self-conscious when using it, almost like everyone is staring at what I’m doing (like right now I’m answering this in Simplenote on my iPhone rather than my iPad, even though I’ve both with me).

The other reason is that I tend to do quite a bit of writing during my commutes. In theory, the iPad with its near full-size keyboard should have been better suited for such tasks. In practice though it is way harder, if not impossible, to type if you commute by trains and buses and can’t get a seat.

But other than that I really enjoy the experience of using an iPad and I feel like I should use it a lot more than I currently do.

What mobile devices, other than iOS, do you currently use? Only the iPhone and iPad.

What’s your favorite thing about developing for iOS? My favorite part about developing for iOS is that anyone, even someone like me—completely new to the Mac/iOS development scene and without the advertising monies and distribution platforms of traditional publishers—can potentially make it big on the App Store as long as you make a great app.

It’s almost like everyone is equal on the App Store. Well in practice I think Apple does pay more attention to apps from big name publishers or developers, and tend to feature them more, but it’s about as good as a distribution platform can get for lone wolf developers like me.

For Due to sit alongside apps published by Apple, EA and get the same kind of exposure is not something I could dream of pre-App Store.

What’s your least favorite thing about developing for iOS? Probably the wait for review and approval. Sometimes I could have shipped another update in the time it takes Apple to review and approve an update.

What feature would you most like Apple to add to the iOS 5 SDK? An overhaul of the notifications system that everyone is looking forward to. For me, whose app depends entirely on it, I’m really excited to see what Apple brings to the table, and what I could do with it for users of Due.

In addition to the qualms that most people have with the current system (too obtrusive, transient, etc), there are a few serious limitations at the moment that I’m hoping gets addressed. For instance, recurring local notifications are limited to every one second, minute, hour, day, week, and so on. This is the reason why the auto snooze function found within Due is limited to every minute and hour, and nothing in between. An auto snooze with finer intervals also happens to be the top support request I get, and I feel severely handicapped that it’s not something within my control to fix until Apple improves the SDK on local notifications.

There are other things I look forward to, including better control of notification volume and vibration, as well as the length of sound alerts. This one is a long shot, but I also wish Apple could allow apps to run code with the tap of a button in the alert itself without launching the app to do so. In the context of Due, that would allow users to postpone a reminder, or to mark it as done, without launching into Due and interrupting whatever they were doing then.

What feature would you most like Apple to add to the App Store? To enable developers to respond to user reviews on the App Store. I’m greedy, so another one would be to see a list of apps that have been purchased before (and to download them again if they’re not already installed), and to properly reflect them as a free download if a user were to download it again (I believe Apple is doing something on the iPad now, but the iPhone still doesn’t reflect this correctly).

There are quite a number of occasions where customers have bought Due on their iPhone, and wish to have it on their iPad (or vice versa), but weren’t sure if they would be charged again since they needed to tap on the $4.99 and ‘Buy now’ to download it again.

If we were to eavesdrop on you while you were coding, what curse word would we hear you use the most? I’m not sure, I think I’m the really quiet sort when working…

What do you do when you’re not coding iOS apps? I photograph (it’s a joint portfolio with my partner, so not all photos are mine) and teach photography, catch up on my Instapaper and RSS feeds, work out (Kettlebell, swimming and badminton lately).

What should we look for from you next? I’m planning for a Mac version of Due, but I’m finding it incredibly difficult to pull myself away from updating the iOS version because it is so close to me and I use it so frequently, I keep finding new ideas and ways to tweak it.

I also have plans for something other than Due, but seeing that I’ve yet to even sort out my time and resources with regard to the Mac/iOS versions of Due, I think I better not say anything at this point of time!

What’s the best, funniest, or most creative use of Due you’ve heard about from a user? I don’t think this one is considered funny or creative, but I find myself amazed that a number of people have close to 64 active reminders set up within Due at once. Sixty-four happens to be the maximum number of local notifications that an app could schedule under iOS, so very occasionally I get to hear about users who wish that they could add more. I don’t know, but as much as I depend on Due, I think I would go crazy with 64 reminders beeping at me.

The other unexpected thing I learnt was how Due was helping users cope with ADD. Just recently Dave Caolo from 52 Tiger started a series of review on iPhone apps that help users cope with ADD.

I’ve also received a number of emails from users with ADD, and knowing that your app has made a positive impact on people’s lives is truly gratifying. This is perhaps one of the biggest reasons why my heart lies with making productivity apps.

Thanks Junjie!

Antares ain’t the first company to provide individual control to each string on a guitar (hello, Roland!), but the outfit’s new ATG-6 technology takes things one step closer to being acceptable by the mainstream. Rather than forcing users to process separate string signals via an external device, this here rendition aims to tuck everything within the body. In the demo just past the break, a Seymour Duncan HEX pickup is used, and while it’s connected via a MIDI cable, it’s most certainly not a MIDI guitar — that’s strictly used for control. It’s also worth pointing out a key quote from Antares product manager Max Mobley — he’s using a $99 guitar “with about $40,000 worth of technology inside of it,” giving us the impression that this is nowhere near mass commercialization.

Rather than using auto-tune to utterly destroy the genuineness of music (and produce one of the most hilarious Bud Light commercials to date), these axes are hoping to provide legitimate guitarists with added functionality; things like flawless intonation and bolstered tonal flexibility. The system is reportedly capable of constantly monitoring the pitch of each individual string to ensure that every riff and lick is in tune, but it’s smart enough to back off when you want to manually manipulate things. We’re told to hang tight for more details, but for now, we’d invite you to have a glance at the company’s current progress (and a brutal flashback from 2008) below.

The Week in Android News

News

Another week in the Android books — with a long holiday weekend, to boot — and just a few days away from the upcoming reader meet- up (which you are attending, correct?) Lloyd dropped a little treat for us this week with the announcement of the new Android Central T-Shirts, which we know you ordered one already, right? Well, either way, at some point this week you probably slept, attending a meeting, or forgot to check the site so you probably missed something, so let’s take a look below at some of what you may have missed.

You might think yourself too grown-up to be wowed by shiny, glittery things, but we doubt many will be able to watch NVIDIA’s new Glow Ball tech demo without a smidgen of childlike glee. Built to run on the company’s quad-core Kal-El processor, it shows us the first example of true dynamic lighting on mobile devices and also throws in some impressive physics calculations like fully modeled cloth motion. Instead of the pre-canned, static lights that we see on mobile games today, NVIDIA’s new hardware will make it possible to create lighting that moves, fluctuates in intensity, and responds realistically to its environment — all rendered in real time. The titular glow ball can be skinned with different textures, each one allowing a different amount and hue of illumination to escape to surrounding objects, and is directed around the screen using the accelerometer in your tablet or smartphone.

NVIDIA demoed the new goodness on a Honeycomb slate with 1280 x 800 resolution and the frame rates remained smooth throughout. In order to emphasize the generational leap that we can expect with Kal-El, the company switched off two of the four cores momentarily, which plunged performance down to less than 10fps. That means the simulations we’re watching require a full quartet of processing cores on top of the 12-core GPU NVIDIA has in Kal-El. Mind-boggling stuff. Glow Ball will be available as a game on Android tablets once this crazy new chip makes its way into retail devices — which are still expected in the latter half of this year, August if everything goes perfectly to plan. One final note if you’re still feeling jaded: NVIDIA promises the production chip will be 25 to 30 percent faster than the one on display today. Full video demo follows after the break.

It looks like the G2x saga isn’t over quite yet; after first disappearing from store shelves due to quality concerns “high demand,” the dual-core Android smartphone is getting a slight price hike from T-Mobile. As of May 27th, the out-of-stock Froyo handset decided it was worth an extra Grant (quite the presumptuous fellow, no?), dialing in with a new price of $249 after rebate. An internal screenshot describes the price hop as a reaction to inventory constraints. The supposed effects of supply and demand aside, this price adjustment feels a little shaky amid reports of botched WiFi handoffs, overheating, light leakage and reboot issues. With any luck, the G2x will return to store shelves sporting a worry-free update to Gingerbread; but if you aren’t counting on it, you can still snag one at Amazon to the tune of $99. Oh, and look: plenty in stock, too!

Andy Rubin Android K version

Dunno how we all missed this during Google IO — but we did. There in the demonstration of how you can resize widgets is either a fun little Easter egg, or a very excited Andy Rubin, who on May 6 apparently sent an e-mail with the following subject line:

K release — I’ve got the BEST name ever …

Now all we have to do is figure out just what ol’ Andy came up with. Any ideas?

O’reilly make some of the best computer books in the world. They also sell them as DRM-free e-books in a bunch of formats, including PDFs and Mobi for Kindle.

They usually offer one “Deal of the Day”, which is a 50% discount code for a book chosen for that one day. But just for for today, they’ve created a discount code — DDJPN — that gives you a 50% discount on their entire catalog, and they give a part of the proceeds to aid Japan relief efforts.

So far they’ve raised over $60,000, and the day is still young. So if you’ve been recently hankering after some nerdy book (or three), now would be a great time to grab one.

O’Reilly helps Japan, offers entire e-book catalog for 50% off, today only originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 22 Mar 2011 14:35:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Alaska Airlines has decided to ditch paper and will begin using the iPad for flight manuals, further propelling its popularity in the aviation space.

Alaska Airlines has become the first major US airline to hop on board the paperless bandwagon [...] the airline has announced that it will be replacing its traditional flight manuals with iPads.

Earlier this year the FAA approved the iPad for flight charts used among pilots for Executive Jet Management, and this is another big step for airlines and pilots to get into the paperless game.

So don’t be surprised if a year (or less) from now you see most pilots strolling about with their iPad before taking off!

windows 8 wallpaper

With Windows 8 milestone 3 now up for grabs for select Microsoft Connect partners, it’s inevitable that leaked bits and pieces will start popping up around the Web. In fact, the first “official” wallpaper image from the still-brewing OS is already making the rounds.

As you can see, it’s got a similar feel to the good ol’ Windows 7 default background, but features a more subdued smattering of cerulean hues. Those of you who want to use the Windows 8 wallpaper on your current desktop can download it from our file dump.

A few other details have been revealed, too. According to ZDNet’s source, the Windows 8 Jupiter libraries and Twin UI are starting to take shape — though all that’s been located thus far are “[various files] scattered throughout the OS” and the aptly-named twinui.dll.

Windows 8 wallpaper available to download, Jupiter and Twin UI spotted originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 10:45:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Sprint EVO 3D aiming for the fourth week of June?

Sprint EVO 3D

We just ran across the latest edition of the Sprint Playbook, and not surprisingly, the highly anticipated HTC EVO 3D makes an appearance. But along with all the specs and talking points — which we’ve definitely seen before — is the header, which points to the fourth week of June as a targeted release date.

We will, however, couch that by saying nothing’s official yet, and we all know how release dates are subject to change. (And this seems to go against Radio Shack’s "rough launch date" of June 4-ish, which we weren’t all that confident in anyway.)

Anyhoo, it’s coming, and we might now have a more solid target window, folks.

The other day we were in Las Vegas, in a hotel that like all of Vegas stank of cigarettes and losers, which by definition included us for being there. We sat at a sushi restaurant, or what started with sushi and ended with samba ? three kitchens with little crossover from latin to salmon. And so we sailed across the generations, talking music and the history of salesforce, and arriving at the movies. And in particular Citizen Kane. Orson Welles? defining moment, the intersection of melodrama and politics, of the end of the age of controlled media and the dawn of what we now call social media. The story of Charles Foster Kane, a stand-in for Hearst who started wars when there was a dearth of headlines. We saw him in a fake newsreel standing on a balcony with Hitler, saw the arc of his life at the center of the Golden Age where Washington and Hollywood were two sides of the same coin. And as we were swept along in the daring pop media that the film invented, we became a generation of one.

If you have a burning desire to make phone calls or send SMS messages on your iPad 3G, you’ll be happy to know that a group by the name of iPhoneIslam has demonstrated a jailbreak application that enables calls, SMS and FaceTime via phone number on an iPad 3G.

The hack will be called PhoneItiPad and should be available in the Cydia app store before WWDC. The hack requires no additional hardware but you obviously need a jailbroken iPad 3G. This means no iPad 2 support until there is a jailbreak released for that.

Once installed you get an iPhone dialler screen which unfortunately is just the iPhone version blown up 2x. It does look a little ropey; they are working on a full resolution version for this. SMS messages do work perfectly in full screen mode on the iPad. The demo video shows how it all works and it does look like a handy feature to have.

Take a look at the demo video after the break. Then pop back here and let us know if you would welcome the ability to use your iPad 3G as a phone?

Firefox slow-addons list

Mozilla, continuing its year-long crusade to speed up Firefox startup and shutdown times, has published a name and shame list of the Firefox’s slowest add-ons.

The list is just one part of Mozilla’s new efforts to highlight slow add-ons, and to help developers make their add-ons more efficient. Over the next two weeks, ‘slow performance warnings’ will be introduced in the add-on gallery so that users can see, before installation, which add-ons will slow down their browser. If that isn’t enough to spur developers into cleaning up their add-ons, Mozilla has also begun reaching out to developers of slow add-ons with tips on how to improve add-on performance. Finally, add-on developers will soon have the ability to perform ‘on-demand performance testing,’ so that they can test their add-on before it’s deployed publicly.

Mozilla reports that the average Firefox add-on slows down Firefox’s start-up time by 10% — which means, if you install 10 add-ons, you will double your start-up time. On fast desktop PCs that kind of slowdown might be negligible, but on older computers, laptops and smartphones, it could be the difference between a 5 and 10 second startup. Mozilla has obviously realized that while massive performance gains might’ve been made with Firefox 4, the addition of third-party add-ons can destroy any user-perceived improvements.

In other news, Mozilla says that a future build of Firefox will block the installation of add-ons (such as toolbars) by third-party software. Add-ons and toolbars that are bundled in this way will require explicit approval when you next open up Firefox. Hooray!

Mozilla publishes name and shame list of slow Firefox add-ons, cracks down on tardy devs originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 04 Apr 2011 05:15:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Best Buy preps for Galaxy Tab 10.1′s arrival

Read our Galaxy Tab 10.1 review

Galaxy Tab 10.1 at Best Buy

We’re a little more than a week away from the June 8 launch date of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (and the 8.9-inch version as well), and that means it’s just about time for retailers to get their acts together. First out of the gate is Best Buy, which has just listed the Android 3.1 (guess it’s going to launch with the update) tablet on its website as "coming soon" — which, as we all know, it is.

Best Buy doesn’t list pricing, but we figure it should be in line with the $499/$599 16- and 32-gigabyte versions mentioned back at CTIA in March. Just a few more days, folks.

Earlier this week, I took part in Infinity Ventures Summit (IVS) Spring 2011 in Sapporo [this and many of the following links are in Japanese], a two-day, invitation-only event that takes place twice a year in Japan. IVS attracted over 400 people from the domestic and international web industry this time and is organized by VC firm Infinity Venture Partners (which just raised US$41 million for their IVP Fund II). Apart from panel discussions and presentations, some hours of the program gave a total of 14 Japanese start-ups the chance to present their services onstage. Here’s a rundown of all companies that participated at the IVS launchpad this time.

HTC Sensation hands-on video and initial review

HTC Sensation

Since its announcement in April, the HTC Sensation has become one of the most anticipated phones of 2011 so far. Combining a sleek unibody design with a dual-core CPU and the shiny new HTC Sense 3.0, the Sensation emerged as a seriously desirable piece of hardware. But it isn’t the only dual-core Android contender, and competition is tough among high-end smartphones, so the Sensation’s success is not a foregone conclusion.

We’ve spent the past couple of days getting acquainted with HTC’s next big thing, and you can check out our initial thoughts and hands-on video after the jump.

TiPb.com Picks of the Week

Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game.

To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break!

MyPad+ – @iMuggle

I’ve tried a lot of Facebook replacement apps for iPad. So far, my favorite has been MyPad+. If you use the official Twitter for iPad client, you should feel right at home. I personally like Twitter for iPad so MyPad+ suits me well.

Friended and Friendly always seemed to be missing a lot of timeline information. I haven’t experienced that with MyPad+ yet. I’d really like a Facebook app with notifications but I guess we can’t have everything we want.

For now, MyPad+ is definitely my favorite. What about you guys?

Writing Kit – @reneritchie

Writing Kit is a text editor for iPad. But not just. It’s a markdown text editor for iPad. But not just. It supports Text Expander, CloudApp, Evernote, Facebook, Posterous, Tumblr, Instapaper, and Twitter. But not just. It has a built-in outliner. But not just. It supports fonts and pinch-to-change font size. But not just. It lets you tap margins to move backwards or forwards one character at a time, or double tap for one word at a time. But not just.

It also has a built in web browser and power searcher so you can quickly jump back and forth to look up information and write up content.

And support for DropBox is coming soon.

Yeah. Just. Yeah.

Tweetlogix for Twitter – @andrewwray

I’ve been playing around with a few different Twitter apps recently and finally landed on Tweetlogix as my go-to Twitter client for the iPhone. The app has so many features that are missing from other popular Twitter apps that I’ve stopped looking for the “best Twitter app” altogether at this point. Tweetlogix is polished, extremely snappy and takes up very little system resources (RAM) despite everything it can do. When testing against some of the other popular Twitter apps, I discovered the memory footprint of Tweetlogix is roughly half of apps like Tweetbot and Twitter for iPhone, which is great for power users and those who like heavy multi-tasking.

One awesome feature I find myself using on a daily basis is the ‘Now Playing’ option, which tweets what track the iPod app is currently playing and includes an iTunes link for anyone interested in checking out the tunes you’re into. This is particularly useful for me whenever I’m listening to my favorite podcasts for the week.

The app also features light and dark themes, inline image previews, customizable tap-and-hold actions for links and so much more. The feature list is so long, I’d need an entire article by itself to go over everything it can do. If you’re looking for a low-priced and feature-heavy Twitter app that’s also extremely responsive and well thought out, check out Tweetlogix — you won’t be disappointed! (Thanks for the recommendation Brad!)

[$1.99 - iTunes link]

Splashtop Remote Desktop for iPad – @chrisoldroyd

This week’s pick is a remote desktop application that is simply brilliant. You install a small bit of software on your PC or Mac and then install the app on your iPad. When you run the app on your iPad, it scans your network, finds the machine running the software and you can then take control. The app works simply but perfectly. You can control screen scrolling, window scrolling and left and right mouse clicks all with gestures. The most impressive part is the speed. You can even play Flash games on your iPad using this app connected to your PC. It is one of my most used iPad applications. I just leave my laptop in the office and do any PC tasks on my iPad when at home. You can also connect remotely over 3G or even 4G. I just love this app!

[$4.99 - iTunes Link]

Easy Release – @llofte

As a photographer, I need permission to use photos of my clients online, so I have them sign a model release – on my iPad. Easy Release is a great app that is pre-bundled with industry standard release forms but also allows you to add your own. When I have a photo shoot, I just enter the client’s basic information and Easy Release does the rest. It displays the custom release for the client to read, they “tap to agree”, then sign the release directly on the iPad. I even have my clients sign with a Ten One Design Pogo Sketch so that the process feels more traditional. After the signature is obtained, Easy release emails a PDF version to me and my client. Perfect.

[$9.99 - iTunes link]

Labelbox – @lollerscates (Reader’s Choice)

While there are plenty of apps to tweak photos, Labelbox is unique. This app allows you to add a variety of preset labels to give your photos an artistic, creative flair. It’s simple to use and there’s even a screen dedicated to step-by-step directions.

[Free, with in-app purchases - iTunes link]

Your pick?

You’re part of the team as well, so we will be choosing one reader to make a submission each week! Just look for the announcement on [twitter](http://www.twitter.com/llofte] or our Facebook page each weekend for a chance to be picked! In the meantime, jump into the comments and let us know your pick of the week!

We’ve already seen a glimpse of ASUS’ “pad or phone” duo — likely to be named PadFone — hanging out in their latest teaser pic, and now thanks to the folks over at Notebook Italia, we can finally gaze at their much brighter, non-silhouette form. Despite the awkward cropping, the leaked product shot above echoes the same shape and set of Android soft keys as seen previously. Upon closer inspection, though, we believe that the newly-shown silver bar is just the phone’s volume rocker, rather than a potential docking port. So how do the two physically bond together, if at all? Until tomorrow’s launch event, your guess is just as good as ours.

boomshine

One click; just one single well-aimed click. That’s all you get in Boomshine.

That single click triggers a chain reaction; circles start exploding, and other circles colliding with the shockwaves explode as well, creating their own shockwaves, which then catch other circles.

It’s been done before, yes, but this one is a great iteration. The soundtrack is mellow, with lots of piano and some nice percussion (not electronic – it sounds like drums).

At each level you need to make a certain number of circles explode to go on to the next level. I got up to level 12, where you get 60 circles and need to make 55 of them explode. And then I kept trying and trying, but simply couldn’t get it. I did get to 54 circles a couple of times, but as they say, you don’t get points for trying.

There’s no time limit, so you can carefully study the pattern of motion and place your click at the exact right place to create the best chain reaction. I’ve found that clicking near the middle of the screen works quite well, especially if the balls are slowly moving in that direction. By the time the first shockwave dies off, the oncoming balls usually hit it and the chain reaction continues.

What level did you reach? Screenshots please!

Rumored Ice Cream Sandwich test device surfaces

Ice Cream Sandwich test bed

Update: Tech Hog has pulled the post and picture. That proof it’s real? Proof it’s fake? News at 11.

ZOMG, might this be Google’s next Nexus device? Could be. According to Tech Hog (yeah …) what you see here indeed is testing platform for Ice Cream Sandwich  — ICS. And if you had any doubts about how Honeycomb features were going to be merged into the smartphone platform, you need only count the number of buttons you can see on the front of this thing. While it’s possible they could be the kind of magical disappearing capacitive buttons you see on a few phones now, we’re more than willing to bet the home-back-menu-search functions will be moving to software, just like in Android’s tablet OS.

Anyhoo, two manufacturers said to be in the running for the next Nexus device are HTC (natch) and LG. The device is said to be in testing with HSPA+ and Sprint’s CDMA. No real surprise there. As for when we’ll see release? We’d figure later in the year, much as we know you guys would like it out … yesterday.

Just when we thought ancient wooden boxes were all the rage among camera collectors, a compact beauty has shattered our theories — this 1923 Leica 0-series just sold at auction for €1,320,000, or about 1.89 million in US money. Curiously enough, the exact same auction house reportedly sold the exact same camera four years ago: No. 107, the first Leica to be exported, allegedly for a patent application inspection in New York. In 2007, it fetched a relatively paltry €336,000, which was apparently still a world record for Leica cameras at the time. Quite the return on that investment, no? Find more pictures and details at the links below.

Apple iOS vs Android – One Man’s Opinion
There has been much debate about how Android will overtake Apple in terms of handsets using these Operating Systems. The outcome of this behemoth battle will inevitably affect Apple and Google as tech companies. ios vs androidThere has been much debate about how Android will overtake Apple in terms of handsets using these Operating Systems. The outcome of this behemoth battle will inevitably affect Apple and Google as tech companies. As a user of both these phones, here’s why it doesn’t really matter to me.

It’s all about the Apps

The single differentiating factor that pushed the drive toward smart phones is the App Store.  Before the iPhone, Windows Mobile and Treo sort of ruled the smart phone ecosphere. However, little emphasis was place on a single click mechanism (for installation and payment) to get Apps that worked on the phone.

Some App developers had to go to 3rd party websites to market their wares. The problem was that developers were at the mercy of these site for payment. Apple changed all that with automated payment reports and payment procedures. Developers realized that they were paid more (or at lease more regularly) developing and selling Apps for the iPhone.

Then there is the problem with certain Apps that didn’t quite work with your phone. Pre-iPhone Apps were written for specific phones and while it may have loaded for some phones, it didn’t quite work right for some others. Apple took care of that for with a singular hardware (and software) standard for the iPhone.

Android on the other hand has licensed their OS to an army of phone manufacturers. This translates to a wide range of different standards for Android Apps to work under. A recent comment by Netflix product team member Roma De emphasizes this fragmentation problem:

But developing streaming-playback support for the entire Android platform — host to over 300 different Android-powered devices — is a major ordeal. “In the absence of standardization,” wrote De, “we have to test each individual handset and launch only on those that can support playback.”

We can surmise that there are 300 different Android Powered devices (and counting).  Does that mean that all of Android’s half a million Apps support these devices and generically worked?  I doubt it, and until Android makes some standardization (via their API), there is bound to be disappointments with getting the ‘some’ Apps to work.

A Unified App Store

Despite its deep reach, Android’s App Store is not available for all countries.  This has brought some grief to users and developers who cannot get paying Apps into certain counties.

Security

A recent report states that Android Phones are vulnerable to snooping. While a patch has been made in an update, the report states that 99.7% of devices are running on an older OS that still makes the phone vulnerable. This vulnerability makes the phone:

Susceptible to an attack in which someone could access calendar and contact data over an unencrypted Wi-Fi network

While there may have been vulnerabilities with iOS, they are few and were addressed quickly.

This recent vulnerability highlights the dangers of an Android open system. The very system which has attracted hordes of Android fans. Apps that lets users customize the Android system can be the very same Apps that reach into its core to steal sensitive (and potentially valuable) data.

One Man’s Opinion

These are just my opinions. I own both phones and the Android is my “second” Phone. I like the flexibility of Android and the Google Apps experience – the way the phone is optimized for Google related Apps.

The iPhone is the “go-to” for me. The touch screen works in responding to my touch and the browsing the App Store is always a great experience.

That being said, I believe that there is a need for both of these systems in the technology ecosystem they occupy. I cannot fathom a world with just one dominant player because it leads to too much complacency in managing the product’s development and users.

Meanwhile, I look forward to see how Google will address their fragmentation problem with the release of Honeycomb and more importantly, how both Operating Systems can cohabitate in the new tech age that is constantly being re-crafted.

All of this FUD about fragmentation may be solved when Honeycomb is finally released. Honeycomb will come with tools designed to address fragmentation that will broaden compatibility. Apps written for Android dating back to v1.6 will be supported. It will also run on both tablets and smartphones; getting it to run right on the latter is allegedly what is taking so long.

But, if you actually use Hyper-V and are hankering for a good backup solution, Altaro might be worth checking out.

The beta run is limited – Altaro are looking for just 250 testers. All participants will get a free license key to the final, production version. So if you’re interested in helping test Hyper-V Backup, get yourself over to Altaro now and join the beta.

There aren’t many iPad photo-taking apps yet, although there are plenty for editing. This may be because the iPad 2 is so new. It may also be because the iPad’s camera is so awful, an embarrassment along the lines of putting a pair of drum brakes onto Alberto Contador’s race bike.
One thing is certain, though. [...]

For the first time PC sales are set to decline and Citi analyst Walter Pritchard is pointing the finger firmly in the iPads direction. The graph above shows consumer PC sales growth percentages. Month on month they show positive growth; even through the disastrous Windows Vista period and the global recession. If you look closely, between March 2010 and March 2011 you can see a massive decline in growth with it bottoming out in December 2010 and hitting negative figures in March 2011. Now what happened in March 2010 that could have triggered such a decline in PC sales over the following 12 months?

Ok let us remind you! Apple introduced and launched the iPad!!

With WWDC quickly approaching, the rumor mills are heating up with what we should expect at Apple’s annual conference known for big announcements. We’ve learned a little bit more that speaks to what to expect ? including a couple of big, widely-requested things. First of all, a lot of sites seem to be working themselves into a tizzy about the so-called “iPhone 4S”. While it has already been widely reported that there will not be any major hardware announcements at WWDC this year, people seem to be letting their imaginations get the best of them anyway. This site, for example, notes that Apple is pushing for British journalists to fly out for WWDC. And today, there’s a report about Australian journalists getting the same message. Both conclude this must be for the “iPhone 4S”.

Zinio for iPadMagazine subscriptions have never gotten such a boost with the introduction of subscriptions for the iPad.  I never subscribed to any Print magazine as my travels keep me rotating residences annually.  Zinio is the App that solves all that with its broad range of top selling magazines available digitally for the iPad.

I was pretty glad to see Zinio had all the magazines like MacWorld, T3, Wall Paper, and National Geographic which I could subscribe to, or simply buy an issue.

Old magazines either end up being horded (thus wasting space) or being thrown away.  With Zinio, you get to back up and synchronize all your previous purchases on your iPad, iPhone, Mac or PC.  Which kind of makes me want to upgrade my iPad to the 64GB version.

Zinio for iPad - Magazine SubscriptionWith the iPad, magazines bring the added dimension of exclusive content, rich media, and interactive features, something which tradition Magazines do not have.

The App itself is pretty straightforward and you navigate within 3 sections:

Featured – Where they feature some of their Magazines

Library – This page shows all the magazines you have downloaded – You can also filter them by the publication date of the magazine

Shop – Where you browse the major categories of Magazines that interest you.  Tap the magazine and input your Credit card (or Paypal) details to purchase.

As there isn’t the traditional paper, printing, and distribution costs involved, digital subscriptions are generally cheaper and can be quite a bargain.

Here are some of their popular selections:

Business & News — Bloomberg BusinessWeek, The Economist, HBR
Men — Maxim, Esquire, Car & Driver, Men’s Fitness, Outside
Fashion — Elle, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Nylon, Harper’s Bazaar, BlackBook
Home / Lifestyle — Saveur, Oprah, Dwell, Wine Enthusiast
Tech — T3, Macworld, PC World, PC Gamer, X-Box World, Layers
Science — National Geographic, The Smithsonian, New Scientist, Science
International — Vogue France, Esquire UK, Hola Mexico, GQ Japan

Arguments Against Digital Subscriptions

While I have made my case that digital subscriptions are:

  • Cheaper
  • Greener (less paper)
  • Provide Richer content with regards to its interactive aspects
  • Space Saving (And less of a fire hazard when hoarded)

Many old school subscribers (like my mom) still prefer the feel of actual paper while they browse their magazines.  There are also some freebies that magazines give with their Print copies that aren’t available for digital subscriptions.  As for me, I think Zinio will remain on the Home Page of my iPad for quite a while.

Atrix Certificate Updater

Although it took a little longer then what I’m sure most of us would have preferred, Motorola has now issued a fix for anyone who has been experiencing banking applications not working on their Motorola Atrix. The issue arose shortly after the 4.1.83 update was released and while it didn’t affect all banking applications, it did affect quite a few.

In order to get things up and running again, you can now grab the Atrix Certificate Updater from the Android Market. Keep in mind though, the updater only works of you’re on software version 4.1.83 but that shouldn’t be a problem considering anyone having the issue would have had to of installed that update. Jump on past the break for the download link.

‘Tis a sad day in the world of Google… at least for developers who use any of a handful of ill-fated APIs. As the search giant’s API list has grown in recent months, it’s making the decision to cull a few in the effort of “spring cleaning.” In fact, a grand total of seven new APIs were launched during Google I/O alone, but it looks as if the end is nigh for the Blog Search API, Books Data API, Image Search API, News Search API, Patent Search API, Safe Browsing API (v1 only), Translate API, Transliterate API, Video Search API and Virtual Keyboard API. Of those, Wave is most unsurprising, but Translate likely hurts the most — particularly for jetsetters who relied on those baked-in services to wrap their heads around various tongues. According to Goog, the Translate API has been officially deprecated “due to the substantial economic burden caused by extensive abuse.” A pretty ominous phrase, to be sure, and further proof that a few rotten apples can ruin things for the whole of us. Hit the links below to get a glimpse of the full damage — we’re warning you, it ain’t pretty.

On the very first episode of TiPb TV we joked about the 11 inch MacBook Air being more like an iPad pro, but deep inside Apple’s secret labs they might be working on making it exactly that according to Japanese blog Macotakara

Few weeks ago, DigiTimes told that Apple to launch MacBook Air with Sandy Bridge and Thunderbolt in June-July. And additionally, an anonymous source told more information, Apple already made test equipment of Thunderbolt MacBook Air driven by A5 processor.

According to this source who saw live A5 MacBook Air actually, this test machine performed better than expected.

While Apple has been big on taking iPad ideas “back to the Mac” this year, if true it would have to be a proof of concept. Because, as much as I love my iPad 2 for things like Infinity Blade, I quickly run back to my 11 inch MacBook Air to run Photoshop and other intensive apps. Having all that power in a tiny portable is still too good to give up, even if an Apple A5 MacBook Air would have 48 hours of battery life and other benefits.

That’s assuming it would be running Mac OS X Lion, which they no doubt have experimented with on A5 (just as they experimented with earlier versions of Mac OS X on Intel back in the PowerPC days). If it’s running iOS 5, then I have to wonder if it would have a touch screen, which is something Apple said they don’t think works on a laptop.

What do you think? Do you want to add MacBooks to the A5 family? To the iOS family? Would it be the best of both worlds or the worst?

TiPb – The #1 iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch Blog

Not a fan of the official Facebook for iPhone app, desperate for an alternative, but still need to get notifications? Join the club. I’ve never been a fan. Their cryptic “bug fix” updates never seem to improve anything and notifications are always so finicky. More often than not, I open my Facebook app to find several notifications that were never pushed to my iPhone. On top of that, the timeline can be choppy or jump randomly. And the whole “liking comments” just seems to decide on its own whether or not it’s going to work that specific day.

If you feel the same way, hit the jump for some workarounds and alternative solutions to using the Facebook for iPhone application.

There’s a few ways you can ditch the Facebook for iPhone application (and still receive notifications). Unfortunately, unlike Twitter there aren’t any real alternative apps. However, these are the two solutions I found to be the best alternatives to using the official iPhone app.

Facebook web app + Boxcar

This is one thing I use as a fall back method when Facebook for iPhone app decides it doesn’t want to push notifications to my device anymore. It works rather well. You can even route the Boxcar notifications to open the mobile site for Facebook. I actually prefer the layout and functionality of the mobile site. I’m not quite sure why Facebook has not just implemented a lot of this into the native app. They recently integrated liking comments but it hardly ever works or shows up. It always works in the mobile web version.

Simply download Boxcar from the app store, create a login and customize your Facebook notifications how you’d like them. And you can have a different sound other than tri-tone which may be a plus for those of you like me that have tons of friends that use tri-tone. I like my sounds to be unique so I know whether or not my iPhone is going off.

Facebook web app + Facebook native app

Another route is to keep the Facebook native app installed but use the web app. If notifications aren’t a huge issue to you and you just want a more steady user experience, simply keep notifications active but use the mobile site instead. I simply turned off badges and hid the app in a folder. That way, I still get notifications for Facebook but I can choose to use the mobile web version instead.

The only downside to this method is if you open a Facebook notification, it will still bring it up in the native Facebook for iPhone app. I simply tap close and then launch the mobile web version. All the notifications will be right at the top of the web version. Not the best workaround but it’s definitely a more stable user experience than the native app in my opinion.

Do any of you have a better way to use Facebook on your iPhone? Let us know in the comments!

Boxcar – Free

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

It’s been almost a year since the producers of The Hurt Locker filed a lawsuit against 5,000 alleged pirates suspected of distributing the film via BitTorrent. Now Voltage Pictures has updated its complaint, adding almost 20,000 IP addresses to the list of defendants. That makes it the largest file-sharing lawsuit of all time – a crown previously held by the company behind The Expendables, according to Wired. The plaintiff has already reached agreements with Charter and Verizon to identify individual users, but no such deal with Comcast, who owns nearly half the supposedly infringing addresses. Linking those addresses with user accounts would let Voltage manage individual settlements — probably somewhere between $1,000-$2,000 — rather than continue legal action. All of this eerily echoes the Oscar-winning film’s plot, about an adrenaline junkie who couldn’t resist downloading just one more movie. Or defusing one more bomb. We’re a little fuzzy on the details, but venture into TorrentFreak to scan for familiar IP addresses.

iOS 5 Map app will still use map data from Google?

Mark Gurman, writing for 9to5Mac 9to5Google received a tip saying that although Apple may improve the Maps app for iOS 5, they’ll still use Google for the actual map data, just like they’ve done since iOS 1 (iPhone OS):

Now, sources have told 9to5Google that although Apple is working to improve the iOS Maps application, iOS 5 will not bring an Apple developed maps service and Google Maps is still in.

This makes a lot of sense. There are two major map data providers, TeleAtlas, which is now owned by TomTom, and Navteq, now owned by Nokia. Almost everyone else has to license the data from them, with the exception of Google who has since re-mapped and compiled their own map database. The companies Apple purchased, PlaceBase and Poly9, seem to do really interesting things with map data, but don’t seem to have any map database themselves, and while Apple has been compiling location data, there’s no evidence they’ve re-mapped roads the way Google has. (Though they may be in the process of doing that.)

So if Apple is working on updating the iOS Maps app, my best guess is it will be in the layers above the raw map data, and once again they’ll use user interface and experience, and very cool software as the differentiator, no the pipes themselves. If you own the UI, you can swap out the pipes whenever you want, like they swapped out Skyhook for Google, and then Google their own database for location.)

Anything specific you’d like to see in iOS 5 Maps?

A few years back, the Department of Transportation recommended that auto makers give car owners a heads up when they slip event data recorders — also known as “black boxes” — into new models. Now, it looks like the department is considering taking its policy a step (or several) further: a memo reveals that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration plans to propose later this year that all new passenger vehicles have EDRs. So far, heavy-duty vehicles appear to be excluded, and either way, it’s unclear how many years auto makers might have to work black boxes into their future models. Interestingly, when we asked a DoT staffer for clarification, he reminded us that the agency hasn’t issued a press release and said he wasn’t sure where Wired and other outlets were getting their information. Indeed, the Transportation Department hasn’t proposed such a law yet, though it’s pretty safe to say it’s at least pondering it. Hit the source link to pore over the 197-page doc for yourselves (tip: we suggesting paying particular attention to page 54). [Warning: PDF source link]

There’s been a lot of talk of things coming to an end at NASA lately, but there are also some new beginnings, and the space agency has now officially filled in one big gap. It’s announced that the so-called Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (or MPCV) will be its go-to space exploration vehicle for missions beyond Low Earth Orbit — presumably, the individual spacecraft will get names more up to the level of boldly-named vehicles like Endeavor and Atlantis. If it looks a little familiar, that’s because the MPCV will be based on the Orion spacecraft that was developed under the now-canceled Constellation program and, like it, it will be built by Lockheed Martin. Once its put into service, the spacecraft will be capable of carrying four astronauts on missions up to 21 days, and it could even be used as a backup for cargo and crew delivery to the ISS — to actually get into space, it would blast off atop a heavy lift rocket, and then splash down Apollo-style in the Pacific Ocean. Head on past the break for NASA’s official announcement.

A few more deets on the initial Droid X Gingerbread push

Droid X Gingerbread

Sitting by your Droid X waiting on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update? It ain’t happening just yet. Yeah, Verizon said it’s starting today, but in limited numbers, folks. And remember how Motorola sought out an initial batch of testers? They just got their marching orders, which read thusly:

    • The update will be pushed late tonight. If you go to bed, it should be waiting for you in the morning. West Coast members and night owls may be up to see it.

    • It’s a good idea to keep your phone charged if possible and plugged in overnight. You don’t have to keep it on, but you can.

    • If you are rooted, you must flash back to the standard Droid X software to receive the update. (Even then we can’t guarantee the update will work.)

Again, that’s for the folks who got in on Motorola’s initial testing. We’re willing to bet someone will leak out the update file for manual installation. But it sounds the vast majority of us will have to wait until early next week — likely after the Memorial Day Holiday.

Together, we’ve created 0 to 100, a poignant glimpse of the true face of the human lifespan: 101 portraits of folks at every age, from mere weeks to a full century old.

The Project started in Australia and culminated in this App, a PhotoBook, a website, and an exhibition.  As the name of the App suggests, it captures people from ages 1 to 100.  Each page is a portrait with an attached quote.  Some portraits include videos.  The quotes and videos have are interesting statements made by the subjects and should bring a warm smile to your face like it did to me.

0 to 100 Project iPad App

Just when I thought that I can’t do much more with an iPad, I chanced across this Free App to cause me to think about how much more an iPad can be.

You see, I am a serial reader.  I don’t mean novels, even though I have a few on iBooks.  I devour news on politics, current affairs, and tech matters.  The iPad has made it even easier for me to subscribe to and catch up on all matters that interest me.  So much that I have got to limit myself to what I subscribe to in order to balance out my non-iPad time.

The 0 to 100 project is an App to share with family and friends.  Flipping through the beautifully shot photos and reading the attached quotes somehow makes me wonder where we were before, where we are now, and where we’re going to be.  If that does not do it for you, there is always a FaceMaker feature to let you switch facial features, always good for a laugh.

CPUPiling on cores is one way to boost performance, but it’s not necessarily the most efficient way — researchers at North Carolina State University have developed a new prefetching technique for processors that could boost performance by up to 40-percent. As you may know, any data not stored in a CPU’s cache must be pulled from RAM, but as more cores are added they can create a bottleneck by competing for memory access. To counter this designers use prefetching to predict what information will be needed and grab it ahead of time, but guessing wrong can hurt performance. Researchers tackled this problem from two fronts: first, by creating a better algorithm for divvying up bandwidth, and second, by selectively turning off prefetching when it might slow the CPU. Full PR and an abstract of the study being published June 9th are after the break.

iOS notifications Concept

TechCrunch has word that iOS 5 will include an all-new, completely revamped notification system with widget support to boot.

The other big news for iOS5 — and yes, I’ve completely buried the lede here, thanks for reading! — two things: completely revamped notifications and widgets.

We’ve previously heard that Apple was planning on giving iOS notifications a major face-lift, and Apple did hire the man responsible for webOS‘ elegant notification system, so this really could be the next generation improvement a lot of us have been hoping for.

Throwing cold water on those holding out for new iPhone hardware, however, they once again suggested Apple has no plans of bringing a new iPhone to the party at WWDC.

Apple is pushing for journalists to come to WWDC because the software announcements will be huge (and they likely know that journalists hearing there will be no iPhone 5 announcement may choose to stay home instead this year). And the changes will be vital for all developers in the Apple ecosystem(s) to know about.

In addition, rumors that Nuance technology would be fully baked into iOS 5 doesn’t sound likely according to their sources, but they’re still hearing iCloud will be in full effect at the announcement.

There are plenty of great iOS notification concepts floating around, but we’ll have to wait for WWDC to get a real grasp on the new system and what kind of widget support will be included.

What do you think it could look like?

PayPal goes on the defense, sues Google over trade secrets

PayPal goes on the defense, sues Google over trade secrets

Well, that didn’t take long at all. Having only announced Google Wallet yesterday, Google is already facing some distaste for the service from the competition, namely — PayPal. Summed up in what turned out to be a 28 page PDF statement.

PayPal is claiming protection of trade secrets as the reason for the lawsuit, and that Google allegedly lured PayPal executives Osama Bedier and former general manager and vice president of PayPal Merchant Services Stephanie Tilenius away from PayPal.

If what PayPal alleges turns out to be true, then we’re guessing this will be a long drawn out case that could have some serious implications for those involved.

We love teasers, but the wait can be unbearable sometimes. Luckily, all it takes is a tweak in the URL to uncover ASUS’ upcoming Computex teaser pics ahead of time, as discovered by our eagle-eyed reader Anas. As you might have already figured out, the image on the left — which just went live — seems to be just a reminder of the Eee Pad MeMO’s June launch, though the words “A Tablet That Jumps Out at You” could also imply a device bearing 3D functionality of some sort. Maybe ASUS managed to upgrade said 7-inch Honeycomb tablet just in time? We shall see.

But the real meat here lies in the remaining image, which is scheduled to close the loop on the “Pad or Phone” teaser campaign this coming Sunday. What’s new is merely the intriguing line “How about Both?” below the old text, accompanying the silhouette of what appear to be a large tablet and a smaller phone-like device. Could this mean ASUS is toying with the idea of an Atrix-like docking combo, except the lapdock is instead just a tablet? We could well be stretching here, but hey, ASUS does say it wants to “break the rules,” right? Stay tuned as we’ll find out more at Computex 2011 next week.

[Thanks, Anas A.]

Update: It should be noted that the phone-docking idea we’re referring to is not related to the MeMO and MeMic duo — look at the second pic closely and you’ll see that the smaller device has four Android soft keys, whereas the MeMic has different buttons. Check out the close-up after the break.

TiPb – The #1 iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch Blog

Passwords are an important part of having an online presence. I always tell friends and family that you should never ever have the same password for all of your accounts. (Do they listen? Probably not.) Either way, having the same password means if someone gets hold of one of your accounts, they could potentially have access to all of them. Having separate passwords is the best idea but then comes keeping track of all of them. Apps like 1Password and DataVault set out to solve that problem.

I took a look at both of these popular password management apps and pitted them against each other. Follow along to see which one came out on top!

Management & Syncing

When it comes to password management, I want to have easy access to my passwords regardless where I’m at. Both of these apps seem to provide that. Both 1Password and DataVault have iOS apps, desktop apps, and syncing services. So if you need to reinstall your desktop client or iOS client, you won’t have to re-enter all your passwords.

I’ll have to give the edge to DataVault on this one simply for the fact that they offer many more ways to sync your data than 1Password does. 1Password currently offers wifi syncing and syncing with Dropbox. DataVault offers the same but also offers syncing with MobileMe, iTunes file sharing, ad-hoc, and sync servers such as Box.net. So if you don’t feel comfortable syncing with Dropbox or over wifi, DataVault may be a good option.

Features and control

Both apps have tons of features. You can create any kind of entry imaginable from logins, credit card accounts, bank accounts, and more. The desktop clients also offer a ton of profile options to auto-fill forms. Even though we are talking about the iOS version of these apps, I think it’s still important to talk about their desktop counterparts since they do work together for one single solution.

In my testing, both seemed efficient and did their job well. Feature-wise they’re about even.

Interface and ease of use

I’m the type of person that doesn’t want to spend an hour learning to use an app before actually being able to utilize it. (I’m a Mac user for a reason!) I somewhat felt this way while using DataVault. The interface felt uncoordinated and clunky. I had to figure out what exactly I was supposed to put in each field and a lot of times, I was entering things in the wrong fields. DataVault is definitely a powerful application but I just felt as though entering information was a task in itself.

1Password seems a lot simpler. Entering a login or password is easy and doesn’t require much work. I also like that I can set two passwords. One being a 4 digit number and the other being a master. I can easily require a master on sensitive passwords and only a 4 digit code for passwords that aren’t so sensitive. I use the 4 digit code option on things like forum passwords or membership passwords that don’t have any financial data attached. It allows me to access those passwords much quicker.

From a user experience standpoint, I much prefer using 1Password.

Pricing

DataVault and 1Password for the iPhone are both $9.99 at regular price. The desktop clients will vary. As of now, DataVault for Mac and Windows is on sale for $9.95 (regular price is $19.95). 1Password for Mac and Windows is a bit steeper as it starts at $39.99 and goes up from there if you’d like to purchase bulk or family licenses. The setup was a bit easier on the desktop version of 1Password opposed to DataVault.

Conclusion

When it comes down to it, DataVault may be a cheaper all-in-one solution if you want a complete password management solution but 1Password is definitely just as appealing. For me, I prefer the ease of use of 1Password over DataVault. Some users may want to save the $20 difference on the desktop client and spring for DataVault. The features and syncing capabilities are present in both apps. I do wish 1Password would add MobileMe syncing but for now, Dropbox syncing has always worked just fine. Since Dropbox is free, I somewhat consider it a non-issue for most.

If you decide to try one of these apps out (or already use one or the other), let us know which you prefer. If you prefer a different password management app, let us know why in the comments! Also check out the gallery below for more screenshots of both applications!
