There are hundreds of thousands of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps for just about everything — so how come the one you need, the one you know just has to be there, is so hard to find? Enter TiPb’s new weekly feature where staff and readers alike sort through the App Store and help you find just the right App for That. This week, George asks:

Next Month, I’m going to a YouTube gathering in London called Summer In The City. As its a YouTube gathering there is going to be alot of video taking. However, I’m only going to take my 16GB iPhone (and clothes and stuff), so was wondering if there was an app that would let me store the videos when I ran out of room, as I can’t put it on a computer or anything.

To see what we found for George, follow along after the break!

Dropbox [Free - iTunes link] is the perfect solution for George! Dropbox is an iPhone and iPad apps that allows users to upload videos, as well as other files, that can later be accessed from a computer or other iOS device.

A free dropbox account provides 2 GB of space (with incentives to increase that). If George is concerned about space, he can subscribe to the 50 GB or 100 GB plan. They are priced at $10/mo and $20/mo, respectively, but he can cancel his subscription after returning from his trip and transferring the videos to his computer.

Anyone else have any App for That suggestions for George? Let him — and all of us — know.

Having trouble finding what you need in the app store? Send us an email to iosapps@tipb.com and let us know what you’re looking for, and we’ll do our best to find you just the right App for That!

Fotopedia North KoreaThe problems with visiting reclusive North Korea is that there are few commercial flights going there.  You also need to receive explicit official permission and an entry visa from the Government of North Korea to enter the country.  Fotopedia’s App on North Korea is then a very convenient way to gain an insight into the people of North Korea.

The App’s author is photographer Eric Lafforgue, and he allows us a glimpse into the secretive life of the North Koreans.  There are more than 1300 pictures sorted by theme, location, and events.

Eric Lafforgue traveled to North Korea between 2008 and 2010, shooting images of everything that he could, playing a ‘cat and mouse’ game with his supervisors (oh yes, I forgot to mention that your trips to Korea requires supervision).  In this app, he managed to capture rare photos of farmers and health care facilities.  I am guessing these photos are rare because they want to hush any news of a famine, and lack of healthcare in North Korea.

Fotopedia North Korea Screenshot #1

There are many images of propaganda posters, military training, children’s athletic corps, and monuments to Kim Jong-il.  Despite the numerous photos, I cannot help but to wander what more can be seen if Photographer Eric Lafforgue went off the approved track and took the un-authorized photos.

One of the many photos that stuck to my mind is that of children sitting and walking ON a six lane road, oblivious to the cars around (the highways are pretty empty there).

Fotopedia North Korea Screenshot #2

As with all Fotopedia apps, the images come with a helpful toolbar that allows users to get information on the photos from Wikipedia, pull up a map of the location of the photo, bookmark individual photos for your favorites collection, and search for other photos in the categories of Arirang Festival, Propaganda, North Korean Leaders, Korean People’s Army, Traffic Officers, Places, People, and Themes.

If traveling by App is your thing, you may also be interested in Fotopedia’s other Apps, Heritage, National Parks, Memory of Colors, Paris, and Dreams of Burma.  Fotopedia North Korea is free and available for the all iOS devices.

Logitech Revue hits its promised $99 price point

Logitech Revue

Logitech announced in its earnings call last week that its Revue Google TV set-top box would get a deep discount to $99 — that’s $200 off what it initially sold for — and that pricing is now in effect. Logitech’s site actually still says $299. But add the Revue to your cart, and it can be had for $99.

We can argue about functionality and usefulness all day. But for access to Pandora, Netflix, a full browser, Youtube’s sweet "Leanback" display, Amazon’s movies and a handful of other features, $99′s pretty tough to beat.

Purchase: Logitech Revue; Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Mozilla Messaging, citing Mozilla’s increased focus on Web-borne communications, will be reintegrating with Mozilla Labs.

The Messaging subsidiary was formed in 2008 to focus on Thunderbird, but given Mozilla Labs’ current focus on identity and contact management, it now makes sense for the groups to be merged. Thunderbird will be unaffected by the change — some URLs might change, but that’s it — and presumably Messaging’s F1 and Raindrop will thrive in the Labs playground.

What this means for the end user — for the hundreds of millions of Firefox users — is that the next big additions will be communication- and messaging-oriented. Contacts and F1 will be almost certainly be baked into Firefox 5 or 6, both of which will be released this year — and, who knows, there might be something else even more exciting up Mozilla Labs’ sleeve!

Hands On with GoGo Navigator App for iPhone – 3D Navigation on the Go!
It’s been long you haven’t come across an exclusive navigation app. May be it’s time to learn about the GoGo Navigator app for iPhone that I stumbled upon a few days back. It’s been long you haven’t come across an exclusive navigation app. May be it’s time to learn about the GoGo Navigator app for iPhone that I stumbled upon a few days back. To begin with the review, I’d like to tell you that it’s a very deeply featured app with lots of functionality to offer. So what’s the first point that makes it stand out? The 3D navigation! Yes, 3D navigation, that too, turn by turn. To put it on a platter, the GoGo Navigator app incorporates features such as live traffic, real time 3D navigation, signpost display, text-to-speech voice guidance, lane guidance, countless onboard Point Of Interests to name a few features.

Let’s first have a look at the main app screen that contains useful icons such as POIs (Point Of Interest), Address, Where Am I, Local Search, Point on Map and many more, apart from three fundamental buttons, “My Route”, “Traffic” and “Settings”.

The app gives you detailed options, so that the navigator can be optimized according to your needs. Have a look at the Routing Options, and within them, the Avoidance Options below.

Well, you might have started to like the app already for its detailed options, let’s take you to a superb option, which the app calls Where Am I. If you feel lost at any stage during a commute, hit this button! It translates your whereabouts according to your X-Y co-ordinates, providing you Nearest Address on Left, Nearest Intersection, compass, zoom-able map view, and many more interesting sub-options. Not to forget, that you can favorite your current location on this Where Am I option screen, which actually leads to the following transition:

Let’s now try the Local Search option. This option is powered by Google search and work son two fields, “What” you want to search and “Where” you want it to be. You can keep the “Where” field empty so that the app can make use of your current location coordinates and suggest places that are nearby, by default.

Let’s have a look at the 3D navigator functionality now.

The picture above might give you an idea of its 3D nature. As I mentioned, it’s a turn by turn navigator, which means that the navigator keeps adjusting and updating its route according to different road conditions and provides complete instructions on where to turn and when. Opting for Details gives you the following:

Lastly, let’s have a look at the Traffic and On My Route list options from the main screen. The app sends you in-app messages about the upcoming signpost displays and their distances etc.

The app makes use of the accelerometer, so feel free to make use of the screen width as per your liking.

This was more of a hands-on review, while there’s still plenty of stuff that can be dug out from app’s official iTunes location where it awaits your download. Here’s a list of all the naviigator fetaures:

  • Turn-by-turn voice directions
  • Real-3D
  • Live Traffic*1
  • Text-To-Speech (speaks street names)*2
  • Real Signpost display
  • Lane Guidance
  • Auto re-routing
  • Pedestrian Mode
  • Precise voice guidance with adjustable volume
  • Multiple routing options; faster time, shorter distance
  • Search by Address, Point on Map, ZIP and more
  • Intelligent POI searching: search by phone number, Address, Category, POI name, partial word
  • Ability to save and edit favorites
  • Recent destinations stored
  • Quick POI features (Home, Office, and Emergency POIs)
  • Auto zooming (at intersection & on speed)
  • Route Planning: create and save route itineraries
  • Fuel cost calculator (customizable)
  • Route summary for trip information
  • Speed Limit warning: adjustable audio/visual warning
  • Simulation control

GoGo Navigator supports the following languages: US, English, Latin Amer. Spanish, CA. French and Korean.

The app cost may be just a fraction high, but looking at the stand out 3D feature and the depth in functionalities, $29.9 may actually be a fair price, to be honest.

Concert footage from LG’s ‘Bring Your World Alive’ event in Hell’s Kitchen now on Youtube

LG Thrill party

LG’s mighty proud of the Thrill 4G, and we can’t say we blame them — check out the hands-on and see why.  To celebrate the launch, they threw a big bash on July 25 in New York with musical guest Jane’s Addiction, and the concert footage from the party is now on line for every one to have a look at.  At their ComeAlive Youtube channel, they’ve dropped nine videos of the band having a loud good time, as well as the crowd.  Maybe even more interesting to us Android fans, on Aug. 4 they will be uploading a full documentary shot in 3D with the LG Thrill 4G to their channel.  Should make for a great look on any stereoscopic 3D device, like the Optimus 3D or the EVO 3D.  Of course with word that the LG Thrill may be delayed, it’s may be a few weeks until you can actually watch in on a Thrill.  In the meantime, check out the band at the source link.

Want to charge your Photon 4G and use the kickstand? Flip it over

Read Part 1 of our Motorola Photon 4G review

Photon 4G kickstand

The best part about having the best Android community around? Easy answer to stupid problems. See, as Android Central Forums member Quis points out, when you’re using kickstand on the Motorola Photon 4G like in the picture above, you can’t charge at the same time because the microUSB port is resting against the table/desk/laptop whatever. Oops.

Fellow forums member RickNY points out the easy fix — the Photon’s kickstand is sturdy enough to support the phone backwards. And, sure enough, flip it over and the phone stays up, and the widget clock works, too. Easy solution to a dumb problem. Nicely done, folks!

libra

I’m getting fat; that’s what you see on the screenshot to the right — my gradual move from chubby to portly. But never mind the numbers, look at the pretty graph!

If you’ve ever read The Hacker’s Diet, this graph should be instantly recognizable. Each point shows the weight for a given day, while the trend line lets you see if you’re gaining or losing weight.

When I use my “main” PC, I have a homebrew solution for creating and maintaining this graph. But I’ve had to find a temporary solution for Android, and Libra is it.

It’s a beautifully simple app, very true to the spirit of The Hacker’s Diet. You can create a shortcut on your homescreen that brings you right into the data entry screen, so you just tap the shortcut every morning, feed in your weight for the day and hit OK, and then you get to see your progress (or lack thereof) on the graph.

The app remembers the previous day’s weigh-in, which makes it easy to enter today’s weight (as they’re usually not too different). The graph is zoomable and scrollable, and most importantly, you can export the data to CSV so you’re not locked into the app.

If you ever need to track your weight using an Android device for any period of time, Libra is one excellent solution.

windows phone 7

Happy first birthday, Windows Phone 7! One year on, and the fledgling mobile operating system has 36,000 active developers in its AppHub community, 1.5 million downloads of its Developer Tools, and 11,500 apps in its Marketplace.

Microsoft is quick to take a couple shots at competitors’ app stores, beating its chest about not re-counting tanslations of an app or “lite” apps, “increasing tonnage” by supporting apps from other mobile platforms, and not listing wallpapers as a category.

That’s all fine and dandy, but we spend a lot of time sifting through WP7 app feeds — and we’re still not seeing a lot of awesome apps on the platform. We think a few marquee apps would’ve made a pretty nice first birthday present — along with a much smoother update process for WP7 users.

TiPb Picks of the Week
TiPb.com Picks of the WeekEvery week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. TiPb.com Picks of the Week

Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game.

To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break!

Tapatalk – @Alli_Flowers

If you’re reading this review on TiPb, you probably read the TiPb forums too. And you’ve probably tried perusing the forums on your iPhone…which is admirable, but can be a a less than pleasant venture.

Tapatalk gives you the large screen experience on your iPhone’s small screen. Not just a mobile view, Tapatalk has to be activated on the forum server – and it’s been activated on TiPb. So when you view the TiPb forums from Tapatalk, you see everything you would from the desktop, but neatly arranged rather than just squished into a smaller space.

You can choose to view avatars, and they will appear in tiny thumbnails above the posts. Of course, Tapatalk gives you the option to turn them off. I rather like having the avatars on. I recognize them and know who’s posting from viewing the picture.

Do you view only certain sub forums? You can choose just the ones you want to see. I prefer to read all new, and there’s an option for that as well. Anything you can do from the desktop, you can do through Tapatalk. The latest update even gives you all the moderation options, so I can zap spam from anywhere!

Tapatalk comes with a wide variety of forums listed. You just have to navigate to the one you want. I’m hoping that at some point they add in a search feature to make it faster to go straight to the forum you want. Available for both Android and iPhone, you can read all the forums you want, provided their admins have activated the Tapatalk plugin.

HulloMail – @chrisoldroyd

One of the frustrations of moving your iPhone from the O2 network in the UK, is that it is currently the only network to support Visual Voicemail. Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange and 3 all skipped this really nice feature. So what are your options? Well HulloMail does a really good job of filling the gap. It is basically Visual Voicemail with loads more additional features.

The HulloMail iPhone app offers an easy way to manage your voicemails visually, send, receive and share voicemails, instant voice messaging to mobile and email, no matter which operator you use. There are two versions of HulloMail, a free version which is ad supported and a paid version which costs $6.99 a year. The paid version gives you some extra features like an ad-free service for a year, individual greetings, longer voicemails of up to 5 minutes and priority access to more features in the coming months.

If your network does not support visual voicemail, give HulloMail a try, it is an excellent voicemail management tool.

AirDrop – @iMuggle

Ok, it isn’t an iOS app but it’s still awesome. This past week I’ve been digging through Mac OS X Lion more and more. AirDrop is one of my absolute favorite features. I bought a new MacBook Pro recently and I prefer syncing my devices to that instead of my iMac since I always have it with me. AirDrop easily allowed me to copy certain pictures, files, and other items I want on my Pro quickly and easily.

The interface is dead simple. All you do is drag the item you want to transfer to another Mac to their circle and they accept the transfer. Easy as can be. I can see myself using this a lot at home when family or co-workers need to transfer files quickly. Dropbox is great but for quick access to files you need on your hard drive, AirDrop is a much better solution that’s built-in.

[$29 for Mac OS X Lion - Mac App Store link]

Tweetbot / Birdbrain – @sethclifford and @llofte

Leanna – Now with push notifications, my favorite Twitter app of all time is even better! I haven’t been using Tweetbot exclusively because of lack of push, but now that it’s here, I’ve deleted all other twitter apps from my phone. Such a great Twitter app!

Seth – I’m doing a Twitter Two-Fer this week, mostly because they’re apps that other writers have either chosen as previous picks of the week, or covered in reviews already. However, they’re both getting heavy use from me this week, and they’re both useful.

Tweetbot, as everyone knows already thanks to Leanna, is a gorgeous Twitter app made by Tapbots, who are collectively responsible for some of the nicest looking apps in the App Store. I wasn’t sure how I felt about it initially when it launched because I felt like there was too much shoved into the interface, even though some of it was hidden in cool, little easter-egg-y ways. I’ve since changed my tune, as the recent addition of Twitter push and my tiring of the native Twitter app coincided this week and I gave Tweetbot another look. It is solid. I’m still finding cool little functions as I play with it, and the UI makes complete sense to me now. As with so many things in life, sometimes you just need to walk away and give something a second look later to truly appreciate it.

Birdbrain is an app that Ally reviewed a long time ago, and it hasn’t had a ton of updates since then, but I love using it regardless. It’s basically a statistics dashboard for your Twitter accounts, showing you all kinds of useful stuff: followers, who you follow, replies, retweets, et. al. in the frame of changes over time. So you can see a chronological history of your Twitter activity and perform all kinds of actions from within the app relating to your account. If you’ve turned off the Twitter email follow notifications (and who hasn’t at this point?), it’s a cool way to see what’s changed on your account and who’s currently listening to you spew nonsense into the void that is the interwebs.

Both great apps, especially in tandem. Have at ‘em.

[Tweetbot - $2.99 - iTunes link] [Birdbrain - $2.99 - iTunes link]

Deadly Exchange – @reneritchie

You might have heard about this new podcast we’re doing, Superfunctional, which is all about dealing with the wrist, neck, and other pain we geeks are often prone too, including using cool stuff like standing desks and Vibram shoes (of course!). The host of the show, Geoff Gluckman, likes to say that if we get ourselves functional, feed our bodies the motion they crave, and move through our lives, we’ll be able to sprint across the street when we’re 90. I plan on taking him up on it and finding out.

Geoff has another side to him, however — he’s an author and his novel, Deadly Exchange, is now available on iBooks and Amazon Kindle. I’ve just bought. If you’re looking for some summer reading and like spy thrillers, give it a try. It can be like a book club. Only totally disorganized.

[$2.99 - iTunes iBooks link - Amazon Kindle link]

Command & Conquer Red Alert for iPad – @skeetobite

My pick of the week is Command & Conquer Red Alert for the iPad. This is a real time strategy game, where you undergo a variety of missions with various objectives. As you progress through the levels, you get more skilled units to asset in your objective. Starting out is easy – you have simple tasks and relatively little opposition. You move your pieces around the board and try to outmaneuver, outthink, or just out-muscle you opponent (although I have found that luck is limited in the long run). As you progress through in campaign mode, however, it becomes more and more difficult. The large iPad screen makes this game easier to play (easier to control your units) as well as visually more appealing. As an added bonus, there are multiple game play modes as well – I was mostly playing campaign mode, but there is also a multiplayer mode (for head to head action). There is also a skirmish mode for a quick battle. I have found myself spending too much time this week with this strategy game – it’s one that can suck you in easily!

[$4.99 - iTunes link]

Pocket God – @applecpugeek (Reader’s Choice)

I just love Pocket God so much! It is very very addicting and fun. In the game, you basically try to kill pygmies or save them from getting killed. The pygmies like us playing with them, so now it seams like mean is the new fun! My favorite mini game in Pocket God is the underground runes.

[$0.99 - iTunes link]

Your pick?

You’re part of the team as well, so we will be choosing one reader to make a submission each week! Just look for the announcement on twitter or our Facebook page each weekend for a chance to be picked! In the meantime, jump into the comments and let us know your pick of the week!

90 second iTunes previews starting to roll out internationally

The new, longer 90 second iTunes music previews seem to be finally rolling out internationally. They aren’t available on all songs yet, and in my testing of the Canadian iTunes Store, it seems hit in miss as to whether you’ll get them or not, but at least some songs are going the full 90 seconds.

After a November 2010 notification to record labels Apple originally switched to 90 second previews in the US back in December of last year. Why it took that email so long to reach beyond American borders is unknown, as is how long it will take to fully roll out now that it has begun.

In an effort to crowd source this, let us know if you’re seeing the 90 second previews, what country you’re in, and whether or not the 90 second previews are everywhere or just on a few songs.

Firefox 4 MobileMoments ago, Mozilla stripped the release candidate moniker from Firefox 4 Mobile and pronounced it fit for public release. If you have a Nokia N900 phone, or a fairly-modern Android 2.0-or-later device, go ahead and install it from the Market, by using scanning the QR code after the break, or by visiting Firefox.com/m.

Accompanying the release is the launch of Spark, a cute social game that’s designed to fuel the adoption of Firefox 4 Mobile, much like last week’s use of Glow and Twitter Party during Firefox 4 PC’s release.

While the browser still feels a little rough around the edges, it’s definitely worth trying out if you’re still using Android’s stock browser. Its JavaScript performance is significantly better than any other Android browser, and if you use Firefox on your PC, its built-in Sync functionality is awesome.

Over the next few days we’ll have plenty of tips and tricks for Firefox 4 Mobile, and a list of the best add-ons available for the new browser.

Google has plenty of things going for it, but patience has never really been high on the list — not surprising, really, for a company that employs scooters to get around the halls of its offices. The search giant has taken a similar approach to the web, offering up a number of services to help speed things up around the old tubes. Page Speed Service is the latest simply named initiative on that front, which has apparently offered up speed improvements of 25 to 60 percent in its early testing phases. How does this magical quickening work? Google grabs content from your servers, rewrites pages with performance best practices, and sends them out through its own servers. The service has raised a few eyebrows, but Google insists that Page Speed Service is all about improving performance, not collecting information for future advertising opportunities.

Google wants to speed up your site, while resisting the urge to sell you stuff originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 30 Jul 2011 00:23:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Android Honeycomb

Google, in an interesting but not entirely unexpected twist, will not be open-sourcing Android 3.0 Honeycomb for the foreseeable future.

Historically, Android is usually open-sourced via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) a few days or weeks after the code is finalized. While this departure from the norm won’t affect OEMs like HTC and Motorola that have access to internal builds of Android, small-time developers will likely have to wait months before rolling their own distributions.

As to why Google is holding back Honeycomb, its reasons are actually rather rational. Honeycomb, while originally intended to run on all mobile form factors, is only ready for deployment on tablets. “To make our schedule to ship the tablet, we made some design tradeoffs,” says Andy Rubin, the head of Google’s Android group. “We didn’t want to think about what it would take for the same software to run on phones. It would have required a lot of additional resources and extended our schedule beyond what we thought was reasonable. So we took a shortcut.”

In other words, Google wants to prevent OEMs and homebrew developers like Cyanogen from rolling their own smartphone versions of Honeycomb — it doesn’t want to see the same bitter-tasting tabletified bastardization that occurred with Android 2.1 and 2.2 last year.

Still yearning to find out when the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 will be released worldwide? Aside from Sammy’s previously announced September release for the Nordic areas, there’s been no other official word on when the rest of us can get our mitts on one — not to mention that a month’s time has passed since the AT&T-banded 3G Galaxy Tab 8.9 hit the FCC. It appears that we’ll know more soon though, as Samsung’s apparently slipped out a new “app” that serves as a demo Retail Mode for the upcoming slate. Reportedly, once the store mode is downloaded from Samsung Apps and installed, using the password “5444″ will grant you the access needed to get it running on a current Galaxy Tab. You’ll find a video of the TouchWiz filled demo after the break, but don’t get to excited yet; it’s running on the 10.1-incher. Patience, friends. Patience.

[Thanks, Will]

iPad as Game PlatformThat Apple’s iPad has been a booming success since its launch and to date is no longer news. The tablet has seen continuous growth in sales and a whopping market share, in excess of 50%.

Confirmation of its success has come from all sources, from users to market analysts to Apple’s financial results.

Well, now the tablet gets more praises, this time coming from one of the largest computer games developers, Electronic Arts.

The company’s chief executive, John Riccitiello has stated that the huge success of the tablet has also lead to his company’s latest growth spur. According to Riccitello, one of the reasons for this success is the fact that, compared to gaming consoles which have seen a five-yearly update schedule, tablet users have the ability to use the app stores to get the latest versions of their favorite games.

What this means is that a game developer can update and launch new games sometimes even as often as once every 90 days. This has lead to a 500% increase in Apple’s share of the US video game market share.

Another move by Apple which further fueled the gaming market shares has been the launch of the iPad 2, which saw a great improvement in graphics acceleration and this giving a much better gaming experience. In comparison, a gaming console usually sees a 10-20x improvement in 7-8 years. Apple leaped 9x within one year with the launch of the new version of the iPad.

This ever increasing success can only lead to questions regarding what will happen if Apple launches the rumored iPad 3 this autumn.

Now that Windows 8 images have begun leaking out, it’s only a matter of time until developers start releasing mods for Windows 7 which mimic upcoming features. Over at Into Windows, they’ve spotted one such mod already.

In the earliest Windows 8 images, we saw Windows Live integration on the taskbar. In the far right corner, there’s a user tile displayed. If you’d like to do the same on Windows 7, download Taskbar User Tile from DeviantArt user AngelWZR.

Once installed, your current picture will appear on the taskbar. Click it, and a menu appears which allows you to log off, switch users, and access the control panel. Right now, the mod only works if your taskbar is displayed on the bottom of your Windows desktop.

Firefox 5, 6, 7 and release channels

Mozilla’s Engineering Project Manager, Christian Legnitto, has detailed the release schedule for Firefox 5, 6 and 7. If all goes to plan, Firefox 6.0a1 will be released next week, April 12, and Firefox 7.0a1 in the middle of May. The final build of Firefox 5 should be released on June 21, exactly three months after the release of Firefox 4.

Along with the faster 6-week release cadence, Firefox’s new Chrome-like release channels have also been given names and anticipated update frequencies. The most notable change is the introduction of a new alpha channel — which is analogous to Chrome Canary — that will be called ‘aurora’ and will update nightly. Aurora will be where fixes and features are tested, and either approved for Beta, or backed out to Central. Aurora will have a new icon, too.

The Nightly (mozilla-central) channel will remain unchanged in name and frequency, but it will gain a new ‘nightly icon.’ The Beta (mozilla-beta) channel will remain as-is, with new builds rolling out weekly. The Release (mozilla-release) channel will also remain as-is, with security and stability updates coming every 6 to 12 weeks.

It should be noted that the names (including ‘aurora’) are not necessarily final, but it’s unlikely that they’ll change. We’re also awaiting the arrival of the new ‘channel switching’ technology, which should arrive in the next few days — in time for the release of Firefox 6 aurora!

First Firefox 6 build next week, Firefox 7 by May, and aurora channel introduced originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 05:20:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Apple asks Toyota to remove jailbreak Cydia theme

In news that will no doubt shake the very bedrock of your belief system, Apple has asked Toyota to remove its Scion theme and its advertising from ModMyi, a Cydia repository. The Scion theme has been available for weeks, but after it received a ton of press in the last couple of days, Apple finally lashed out.

It’s not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal – but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn’t matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.

This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia’s creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!

As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.

Toyota pulls Cydia theme and ads to appease Apple originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 06 Apr 2011 05:25:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Google improves search experience for Honeycomb tablets

Google Search on Honeycomb

If you’ve searched with Google through your Honeycomb tablet’s browser, you have probably noticed that the process feels a little undercooked. Today Google announced that they’ve revamped the experience, optimizing browser search for those tablets running Android 3.1 and above. A new search button below the standard search box will organize results by websites, photos, videos, and the rest of the usual suspects, while image results will have larger previews, faster thumbnail loading, and continuous scrolling. Google says that the tablet revamp will be rolling out, with 36 languages in tow, over the next few days.

I find myself playing the air drums rather regularly when boppin’ along to some tunes, and the drum set on Rock Band is by far my favorite instrument, but neither of those hold a candle to what Maayan Migdal has up his sleeve. My air drums don?t make real music. My Rock Band drums do, but they also take up a hunk of space in my room.

His make real music and are invisible.

evoluce win&i windows 7 gesture control kinect
We’ve been looking at some pretty cool Kinect and Windows interactions for a while now, but we were hoping that the release of an official SDK would lead to even more coolness. Evoluce has stepped up, and is now offering Win&I — a full-featured gesture control system for Windows 7.

The company claims that a range of up to four meters is supported, which should be perfect for just about any home theater setting. In the video embedded after the break, you can see an Evoluce demonstrator flip through a photo album, pan through a map, rearrange application windows, browse the Web, and control media playback. Two versions of Win&I are offered — the home version goes for about 20 Euros, the business version for 40.

Anyone else having fun pretending his stance is a little “Iron Man”? We’re tempted to put a repulsor on that hand.

This morning, an updated version of the stock Android Music app was leaked along with a new version of Android Market. Calendar with Alarm is an iPhone calendar app that, well, lets you set alarms.

Never miss an appointment again! CalAlarm is an elegantly designed user friendly calendar that adds an alarm to your appointments, so that you are no longer committed to the two short standard calendar beeps.

  • Easy and quick navigation through days and weeks and years.
  • Quickly add/edit multiple alerts.
  • Copy events.
  • Set defaults for new events.
  • Custom week numbers.
  • Distinguishes calendars with the same name but of different type.
  • Lists upcoming and overdue alarms.
  • Repeats continuously till acknowledged.
  • Snoozes with variable intervals.
  • Customize Quick Alert values, Snooze screen and birthdays alarms.
  • Choice of 25 alarm sounds.
  • Customizes sounds for different calendars.
  • All CalAlarm alarms on/off switch.
  • Sets local notifications.
  • Works with all calendars that use the iPhone calendar database (iCal, MobileMe, Exchange, CalDAV, Google calendar, etc.).
  • Syncs with these calendars.

It drives me crazy that the iPhone’s native calendar only allows two alerts for an event. For entries that require more alerts, I normally add them to MobileMe in iCal on my Mac. Calendar with Alarm seems like a much better solution.

Calendar with Alarm is available on the iPhone for $1.99. Screenshots after the break.

iPhone Air Mockup: Could this be the iPhone 5?

iPhone Air MockupThe iPhone and MacBook Air are perhaps two of Apple’s most bestselling products. So, why hasn’t Apple thought of a product that would offer the best of both worlds - the ultra slim, sleek design of MacBook Air and the gorgeous user interface of the iPhone? ‘iPhone Air’ would probably the most apt name for such a device. Though it is believed that Apple will begin shipping iPhone 5 in September, nobody knows what it would look like? Who knows the iPhone 5 might turn out to be modeled on the “iPhone Air” concept.

First things first, iPhone Air is purely a mockup concept created by Italian studio Ciccarese Design. These folks certainly let their imagination run wild and came up with mockups of the iPhone Air available in both black and white. In the past, several reports (such as the one from thisismynext.com) have indicated that the iPhone 5 would feature an edge-to-edge display as well as boasting a tapered, teardrop outer body design.

It’s widely believed that Apple will launch two totally distinct iPhones in September. One of them would be a low-cost variant modeled on the iPod Touch design. This device would be slimmer than the iPhone 4. Interestingly, the iPhone Air mockups demonstrate the same concept – a device thinner than the iPhone 4 and providing an edge-to-edge display. I, for one, am mighty impressed with the iPhone Air concept and I won’t be disappointed if the iPhone 5 is modeled along these lines.

iPhone Air Mockup - Notification Center

In the past, Apple has done a terrific job of slimming down its products including the iPhone, iPad and Macbook. Therefore, a slimmer iPhone would be a norm rather than an exception in Apple’s future arsenal of products.

Of course, these are mere speculations and the iPhone 5 remains Apple’s best kept secret till date. The iPhone 4 leak saga brought a lot of bad press for the Cupertino giant, therefore it’s understandable that Apple is trying to keep the iPhone 5 under wraps.

What do you think of iPhone Air? Do you think the iPhone 5 would look similar to the iPhone Air concept? Please share your opinion by leaving a comment.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Gingerbread now ready … again

 Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

Although Sony got a little ahead of themselves with the previous announcement of Gingerbread rolling out for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, they’ve gotten things back on track. Some of the first users getting the update notifications will be unbranded devices with carrier branded devices shortly following after. Once you get the update notification, you’ll need to load up the PC Companion app in order to download and install Gingerbread but after that — you’ll be golden.

SPDY in Google Chrome
We’re not entirely sure of the time line here, but it looks like Google has now rolled out the SPDY HTTP replacement to its full bevy of Web services, including Gmail, Docs, and YouTube. If you’re currently using Google’s Chrome browser you’re probably already using SPDY.

We originally reported on SPDY way back in November 2009, when Google introduced it as yet another experiment in making the Web faster, like Go, Native Client and speculative pre-connections. Over the last 18 months, though, SPDY support has found its way into the stable build of Chrome.

SPDY is basically a streamlined and more efficient version of HTTP. At its most basic, SPDY introduces parallel, multiplexed streams over a single TCP connection — but at the same time, SPDY allows for prioritization, so that vital content (HTML) can be sent before periphery content (JavaScript, video). All in all, the SPDY protocol can halve page load times, which is obviously rather significant.

The best bit, though, is that SPDY is an open-source project. HTTP 1.1 is a lumbering beast that needs to be replaced before low-latency real-time computing really becomes a reality, and SPDY is one of the best options currently on the table. To be honest, we’re not sure why SPDY hasn’t received more coverage — it’s awesome in every way. At the moment, though, the only way to help speed up SPDY’s proliferation, is with an experimental Apache mod.

As far as actually ‘trying it out,’ your best bet is downloading Chrome, hitting up some Google sites, and then checking chrome://net-internals to see your active SPDY sessions. SPDY is a transparent replacement for HTTP, though, and as such it’s rather hard to see its effects. Google’s sites definitely feel fast in Chrome, but there are more technologies than just SPDY at work.

Google Chrome now uses SPDY HTTP replacement, halves page load time originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 07:00:00 EST.

If at first you don’t succeed, discontinue your product, carry on a lawsuit, and then try again. That’s the story thus far for Fusion Garage, the company behind the failed JooJoo tablet, an overpriced, hard-to-use slate that proudly omitted all the things people like about tablets — you know, like apps. After the underwhelming sales figures started rolling in, Chandrashekar Rathakrishnan, the company’s founder, admitted that perhaps some people might sometimes be interested in doing things other than surf the web. That was the end of JooJoo, though he promised, ominously, that we hadn’t seen the last of Fusion Garage. Well, here we are: the troubled company just sent another tablet through the FCC, and no, it’s not called the “JooJoo 2.” Rather, this one’s dubbed the “Grid 10″ — a likely attempt on Fusion Garage’s part to distance itself as much as possible from its embarrassing (and messy) entrance into the tablet market. For now, though, that’s near-impossible, especially given that this FCC report contains precious few details about what this thing will be capable of. No word either on when the JooJoo will rise from the grave as an Android-running zombie, but our guess is that apocalyptic day is nigh.

Fusion Garage’s Grid 10 tablet clears the FCC, begs us not to call it the ‘JooJoo 2′ originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Jul 2011 10:18:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

google talk guru answersBots — like the kind which automate IRC rooms and Google Wave — are a good thing to know about. There are plenty of useful bots worth knowing about, too, including the Google Talk Guru.

Just add guru@googlelabs.com to your GTalk buddies, and you can start firing off questions. Lifehacker suggests that the same types of queries supported by Google SMS will work, though we didn’t have any luck getting a response out of the Guru with phrases like “score detroit red wings” or “sushi R3N 1Y1.”

Still, Guru does answer a good variety of questions and it works right within your favorite IM app. It’s well worth adding to your friend list, especially for getting answers on the go on your mobile device of choice.

iPad as Game PlatformThat Apple’s iPad has been a booming success since its launch and to date is no longer news.

Toshiba to issue update to address Thrive’s sleep issue

Toshiba Thrive

Toshiba’s PR firm just hit us up to say that they’ve tackled the oversleeping problem the Thrive tablet has been experiencing, and a fix is on the way. To wit:

Toshiba recently became aware that a limited number of Thrive Tablet users were experiencing Resume issues when in Sleep mode. We have heard from a Toshiba source that a software update to resolve this issue will be available early next week and can be accessed from the Service Station utility app found on the Thrive at that time. This will improve sleep-and-resume performance, as well as enhance the multimedia playback capabilities of the device.’

Not a bad turnaround for a fix — in and out in just a few weeks. Shame it had to happen in the first place, but these things do happen.

iOS 5 LogoThe team from 9to5Mac has recently made an interesting discovery. It seems that hidden within iOS 5 code there is a secret feature: new APIs that seem to be linked to a facial recognition software.

Last month we heard of iOS 5’s interesting features straight from Scott Forstall,  iOS Software’s senior vice president. The soon to come operating system will have the ability to take panoramic pictures and to recognize voice commands.

But apparently, Forstall forgot to mention an even more fascinating feature. The next iOS 5 could sport a face recognition feature.

The idea probably started in 2010, when Apple bought Polar Rose, as Swedish company that specializes in face detection algorithms. Now it seems that Apple is taking over this technology to integrate it in the upcoming iOS 5 and most likely, in the soon to come iPhone 5.

The 9to5Mac team claims that the APIs found in the iOS 5 codes appear to be highly sophisticated. The CIFaceFeature could determine mouth an eye position while the CIDetector would process images for face detection.

However, it seems that Apple will not be developing software with this APIs but rather allows app developers to come up with new applications based on their software.

Probably the facial recognition system won’t be used in order to unlock your iPhone 5, but the app developers would be able to use this new technology to create a wide variety of applications. For instance, it could be used to keep track of your contacts, or to sort pictures in an iPhone 5 Photo app.

For the moment, nothing is certain, but we’re pretty sure Apple and app developers would come up with compelling ways of using the face recognition technology.

In the old days, you used to have to put something called “optical media” into a “DVD drive” to install software and operating systems. Those days are long over thanks to an odd little USB key called the Isostick.

Although the project doesn’t officially exist – it’s almost funded on Kickstarter – the IsoStick promises to allow you to load any ISO disk image from any computer just as if it were loading it from an optical disk. Why would you want to do this? Well, some computers can’t boot directly from a USB thumbdrive and the IsoStick solves this by masquerading as an optical drive first and a thumb drive second. Almost any PC will boot from an optical disk, which makes the Isostick so useful.

Accessory review: Xperia Play DK300 multimedia dock

DK300

Desk clutter is always something to be avoided, and smartphone stands have long been a great way to stop expensive chunks of technology from getting getting in your way as you go about your business. Alongside the Xperia Play, the first PlayStation-certified smartphone, Sony Ericsson has launched the DK300 multimedia dock, which keeps your Play safely locked in place, while adding some interesting new functionality.

Physically, the DK300′s glossy plastic shell matches the look of the Xperia Play. On the whole, it looks good, though like anything made out of shiny black plastic, it’s a magnet for fingerprints, smudges and dust. The Xperia Play drops into the DK300 in landscape orientation, and its micro-USB and headphone jack ports lock it in place. Once the phone detects the DK300, it switches into "nightstand" mode, giving you a large clock and weather display, alongside links to the gallery, music and alarm apps, as well as the launcher.

Around the back of the dock, you’ll find an additional micro-USB port and headphone jack, allowing you to easily hook up the Xperia Play to a charger, computer or external speakers. Thanks to the fact that the dock works in landscape orientation, you’re free to play back video content as well as music, though gaming using the built-in gamepad is probably out of the question.

Our only real beef with the DK300 is its RRP, which is definitely a on the steep side at £29.99 (~$45). However, if you shop around you’ll be able to pick one up for as little as £15 (~$23). If you do, you’ll find it’s a great way to extend the multimedia capability of your Xperia Play, while making charging a little easier and freeing up surface space.

Join us after the jump for more photos of the DK300 multimedia dock for Xperia Play.

Motorola Mobility CEO says Droid Bionic coming in September

Motorola Droid Bionic

Update: Here’s the audio of what Sanjay Jha had to say about the Bionic. You can listen to the whole call here.

"… and it will be in stores in September."

Motorola Mobility CEO Sanja Jha just announced during the company’s earnings call that the Droid Bionic will be released on Verizon in September. Starting with a quick recap of the specs — really nothing we didn’t already know with dual-score, 4G date, etc., etc. — Jha dropped the bomb that the phone that was first announced at CES in January will be in stores as soon as a month from now.

That also lines up with Sam’s Club (and Costco as well) not expecting the phone until September, news we broke a week ago.

Still unknown: A precise launch date, pricing and whether the revamped Droid Bionic will live up to all the hype that’s been drummed up the past six months.

Gmail update brings custom notifications, better sync for battery life, picture options, new actions

Better syncing, better notification options lead the way

Gmail update

Gmail’s just gotten itself a beautiful little update, and the changes are some we’ve been wanting for some time. In handy bullet form, the changes are:

  • You can choose which mail to sync to help save on battery life. Have a bunch of labels? You can choose which ones to keep synced, and which ones you want to update automatically.
  • For the labels you’re keeping synced, you can set custom notifications. That includes whether to receive notifications, which ringtone you want to use for which label, whether to vibrate when a label gets an e-mail, and if you want it to only notify you on the first new e-mail.
  • Know how if there’s an image embedded in an e-mail, you must tell it to display the image — on each and every single e-mail? That "feature" has blessedly been changed so that you can tell it to always display images from a particular sender — just like in desktop gmail.
  • There’s "new options for message options." When you go to the settings area of gmail — and notice it’s been split into "general preferences" along with individual account preferences — you’ll see "Message actions." You can choose to always show them, or show only in portrait, or only in landscape. Nice.
  • Plus, "performance enhancements."

There you have it. Pretty big improvements, if you ask us. Update your app now and give it a whirl, or check out a few more screen shots after the break.

Sadly, Twitter integration wasn’t part of the package when we checked out Windows Phone Mango at the end of last month. The feature has finally been rolled out in the latest developer build of the forthcoming mobile operating system, and WinRumors has taken it for a spin on video. Thrill at the simple setup process through Windows Live. Gasp at integration with the People and Me hubs. Stare in stunned silence at the threaded conversations. All that and more in the video after the break.

Experiencing more than your fair share of Wi-Fi #fail on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, and curious how to work around it? There are a lot of things which can cause Wi-Fi interference. Luckily, there are , here are some of them, and what you can do to fix them.

Here are some ways to reduce or eliminate Wi-Fi interference for your iOS devices.

  1. Reset/reboot your router and your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. Start with a clean slate.
  2. Reposition your route in case a particularly dense object like a wall, elevator shaft, etc. is getting in the way of the signal.
  3. Change your Wi-Fi router channel. Sometimes a microwave can interfere, sometimes other devices. Try the low end, high end, and middle until you find what works best.
  4. For iPad 2, try switching to the 5 GHz band. There’s much less interference on that frequency.

Identifying the causes of interference can help as well, if you notice something always happens when you lose signal — your microwave is on, your neighbour is using their garage door opener, the elevator reaches your floor, you’re streaming over Bluetooth, anything that establishes a pattern — it can help you figure out the right fix.

NOTE: Some iPad and iPad 2 users have reported problems with Wi-Fi in general. If you think it’s not just interference but a hardware issue, take your device to the Apple Store and let the Geniuses look at, and potentially replace it.

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

Verizon ED05 update now available for Samsung Fascinate owners

ED05

Unless you’ve managed to wrangle your way into a new device from Verizon, you’ve no doubt been dealing with some bugs on your Samsung Fascinate. The previously mentioned ED05 update that fixes the incoming call and various other bugs is now available for download through system updates. Still, it may worthwhile to give Verizon a call and see about getting a refurbished Droid X2, Incredible 2 or Droid Charge. If you love Gmail and need to access it on the go you probably already know that Google’s Android platform is the best way to access it, and with v2.3.5 that just hit it’s getting even better. The top two new features this time around include the ability to sync only priority messages (saving battery life and keeping unimportant messages at bay) and the ability to individually set notifications and ringtones for any of the labels in your inbox. The Android Market website is still showing version 2.3.4.1, but we successfully upgraded via the Market on our devices adding those features the ability to remember “Show Pictures” for specific senders, better TalkBack support, the ability to turn off sticky message actions in all orientations and improved performance.

Regarding apps being updated to support iOS 5

We’re getting a ton of emails about apps showing up in the App Store that say they’re compatible with iOS 5, and readers/listeners wondering how that could be since iOS 5 isn’t public yet. Here’s the thing — developers are not currently allowed to upload anything to iTunes Connect (the App Store backend) that uses the iOS 5 SDK and iOS 5 APIs. However, they may be able to make changes within the iOS 4.x SDK, using iOS 4.x API, that also just so happen to fix compatibility issues with iOS 5. In other words, they might be able to code around problems in iOS 5 for existing apps, but they can’t code new iOS 5-specific functionality.

There will likely be cases where devs can’t fix something using the iOS 4.x SDK as well, regardless of how clever they are. So we’ll once again remind you, if you’re using iOS 5 and a specific app doesn’t work right, not to leave a bad review. iOS 5 is only available to developers testing apps, not to users complaining about them. Wait until after iOS 5 is released to the public this fall before you start getting on anyone’s case.

battlepaint

In BattlePaint, you play a cube. In fact, you’re not even a cube — just a square. But boy, are you fast! And you can shoot in all directions. That’s important, because there are baddies coming in from all over the place.

The “baddies” are swarms of other squares, in all sorts of pretty colors. They track you all over the screen, and you run around very quickly and just shoot, shoot, and shoot some more. If that doesn’t sound very emotionally deep, it’s because it isn’t. But it’s fun!

After you shoot a baddy, it splashes paint as it disappears. You need to skate across this blob of paint and “eat it up” to get points. This game is fast. It clocked in at around 60-70 FPS on my system, and was loads of fun to play. It does tend to insult you when you die, though, but don’t be offended — I don’t think it’s personal.

windows home server 2011 whs

Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft’s slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what’s new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft’s official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn’t resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that’s something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.

An evaluation download for Windows Home Server 2011 will be made available in April — we’ll let you know when the links are ready.

opera 11.10 battery power

Just recently, the Opera 11.10 release candidate was made available for download. It brought a handful of important feature additions — like HTML5 File API support and IMAP enhancements — and loads of bugfixes. Nestled in amongst the other details in the Opera team’s announcement is one more interesting tidbit: Opera 11.10 offers improved battery optimizations.

The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft’s recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. iSites — a zero-code cloud-based ‘app creator’ — can now generate HTML5 apps that work on iOS devices. With this new feature, dubbed ‘InstantApp’, you can now design a single app in your browser and publish it natively on Android and iOS, and as an HTML5 iPhone app.

We haven’t looked at iSites before, but it shot to fame last year when it launched with native iOS and Android support. Self-publishing Android apps wasn’t a problem because Google does very little moderation of the Market, but iSites ran into trouble with its iOS apps. Thousands of people signed up for the service after it was featured on Mashable and TechCrunch, and you can imagine Apple’s chagrin as thousands of cookie cutter apps flooded its approval queue.

Genwi, the developer behind iSites, realized something had to be done — it had to circumvent the App Store approval process. Genwi, of course, turned to HTML5 Web apps — which can be pinned to the iPhone home screen and which can be shoehorned into almost behaving like native apps.

Read on for our experiences with iSites’ new InstantApp HTML5 iOS app creator.

Apple finally pushed out a much-anticipated raft of new products this week. Its new desktop OS, OS X Lion, had been promised for a July release last month at the Worldwide Developers Conference, and some Mac followers had been getting downright antsy for a new MacBook Air, which also touched down.

Hey Vonage customers, your VoIP service of choice is about to get a bit of a mobile value-add. Announced today, the company’s new Extensions service links your existing home internet calling plan to extra phone numbers — like a cellphone– for free, so you can make that long-distance call to Tante Lulu in Gstaad on-the-go. Okay, so the feature isn’t exactly gratis — you’re still required to sign up for an unlimited international calling plan, but the bucks literally stop there. All it takes to get started with this “virtual calling card” is an access number and some foreign digits. Sound too complicated for you? Don’t fret, official iPhone and Android-compatible apps are scheduled to hit their respective markets in the coming weeks. So, go ahead and ring ol’ Lu for her 89th birthday. She’ll be glad you called.

It does tend to insult you when you die, though, but don’t be offended — I don’t think it’s personal.

helloexpense

A good mobile application is a fine balance between simplicity and functionality. You’re using it on the go, so you don’t have a lot of time to sit there and fumble with the phone to figure it all out. But you also need it to be powerful enough to let you do whatever it is you’re trying to get done.

Hello Expense is one mobile app that gets it right. It’s an expense tracker that lets you use your Android-powered phone to quickly log the money you spend and then analyze it and see where it all went.

I recently had the chance to use it in a real-life situation – a road trip that took a few days and involved quite a few expenses. Logging each expense took seconds, and at the end of each day I could get a great overview of how much money I spent on each category so far.

Categories and tags are user-configurable; the app also sports its own number pad to make number entry easy, regardless of what keyboard you’re using.

windows 8 welcome screen

It’s not really a secret the Microsoft had planned on bringing bits of Windows Phone 7′s Metro UI to Windows 8, but we haven’t seen a lot of really telling evidence. However, with the Windows 8 milestone 3 build now available to Microsoft Connect partners, it was really just a matter of time before we started to get a peek.

Thanks to Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, we’ve now had a glimpse at what the Windows 8 welcome screen will look like. As you can see, the typography is very Metro indeed. Within Windows also mentions that the background image is customizable, and we’re wondering if it might not pull from your current Windows 8 theme. This particular shot shows the CTRL + ALT + DELETE login option, but we imagine you’ll still be able to log in by clicking your account picture tile as well.

Rivera and Thurrott also mention that the tablet version of the welcome screen will allow you to log in by swiping a pattern on the screen — as you can on current Android devices.

Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy S II will sport 4G LTE

LTE

Great news just keeps coming for the Samsung Galaxy S II as Verizon reveals that their model will support their 4G LTE network. Five million have been sold worldwide thus far without hitting the US market. Many US consumers are considering one, but the question of LTE support has remained unanswered until now. Today’s announcement will give Verizon customers food for thought, as the Galaxy S II and LTE-toting Droid Bionic are both due for release around the same time.

Here’s the Tweet from @VZWSupport:

Great news! The Samsung Galaxy SII will have 4G. ^LM

So now that it will be running on Verizon’s blazing fast 4G LTE, who is going to get one? And perhaps more importantly, what kind of toll can we expect LTE, SuperAMOLED+ and a dual-core CPU to take on the device’s battery?

Starting this fall, for the first eight days after they air, watching Fox TV shows online will require a subscription to Hulu Plus or a participating cable or satellite company. So far Dish Network is the first and only provider to sign up its customers for access to the new walled garden on Fox’s site but others looking to fill out their TV Everywhere lineups probably won’t be far behind. While pay-TV networks like ESPN with ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app and EPIX have already gone the “authentication” route, Fox is the first of the broadcast networks to do so. The new rules go into effect August 15th, then we’ll find out if Fox is driving cable cutters towards paying for TV, piracy, or just ignoring the latest episode of Glee altogether.

avg livekive dropbox

A while back, we told you about AVG’s new LiveKive service, a new cloud synchronization and backup tool which appears to have been named after a vat in which mash is made during the brewing process. But enough about AVG’s odd choice of monikers — LiveKive has launched and is now ready to accept your files into the AVG cloud.

LiveKive takes aim at services like Dropbox and SugarSync, though at the moment it’s lagging behind in terms of features. As it stands, LiveKive is only compatible with Windows and OS X. There are no mobile clients yet, though with AVG’s strong presence on Android we wouldn’t be surprised to see an app arrive in the near future.

The company is offering a heck of a deal right now, however. If you sign up for a paid account during the launch phase, you can score unlimited storage for $80 for a whole year. You can’t even score 50GB per year at that price from Dropbox, so if cost and space are more important to you than cross-platform availability, LiveKive might be worth checking out.

If you’re not interested in ponying up any cash at the moment, you can still get a 5GB account free of charge. Just head on over, and create a LiveKive account.

eFUSION has released a new clock app for the iPad.

iStandard Clock” is designed for everyone looking for simplicity and functionality as iPhone standard clock application to fill the gap of missing clock application on their iPad.

  • Analog clock.
  • City wise time display.
  • Clock color changes on evening and morning.
  • Weekly/daily alarm repeat function
  • Alarm sound ON/OFF and built-in 4 patterns of sound.
  • Snooze ON/OFF
  • Alarm label/message
  • Support lap function
  • Sound ON/OFF and and built-in 4 patterns of sound.

It really is baffling why Apple did not include a standard clock app on the iPhone. Since iStandard Clock is identical to the standard clock app on the iPhone, it feels like it belongs natively on the iPad.

Much music making progress has been made since we first saw Line 6′s MIDI Mobilizer — namely, Apple put MIDI APIs in iOS and iPads started slinging super funky synthesized songs on the regular. In order to embrace the Cupertino-curated CoreMIDI standard, Line 6 has unveiled the MIDI Mobilizer II dongle. It looks like the original and uses the same MIDI Memo Recorder app to store and dispense your sonic musings, but this $70 piece of kit only works with the 3rd and 4th gen iPod touch, the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, and the iPad and iPad 2. Most importantly, the MIDI Mobilizer is compatible with GarageBand and all the latest CoreMIDI apps the kids are crazy about. Apple iOS LogoApple has released iOS 4.3.5 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. If you’ve launched iTunes while connecting your device today, you probably aware of the update.

According to Apple’s release note, this is another bug fix release before the debut of iOS 5. The iOS 4.3.5 mainly fixes a security vulnerability with certificate validation.

Impact: An attacker with a privileged network position may capture or modify data in sessions protected by SSL/TLS

Description: A certificate chain validation issue existed in the handling of X.509 certificates. An attacker with a privileged network position may capture or modify data in sessions protected by SSL/TLS. Other attacks involving X.509 certificate validation may also be possible. This issue is addressed through improved validation of X.509 certificate chains.

The update is available via iTunes or you can download iOS 4.3.5 firmware by using the following direct links:

If you do not need jailbreaking or ultrasn0w unlocking, you’re recommended to upgrade to iOS 4.3.5 to fix the security issue. For jailbreakers, please read on.

Jailbreaker, Please Take Note

A few hours after the release of iOS 4.3.5, @musclenerd from iPhone Dev team confirmed the Redsn0w already supports jailbreaking on the latest iOS version. The jailbreaking should work on all devices except iPad 2.

To jailbreak iOS 4.3.5, you need first upgrade your device to 4.3.5 and use the latest version of redsn0w to jailbreak it. But instead of pointing to iOS 4.3.5 firmware in Redsn0w, point it to iOS 4.3.4 instead.

Presently, redsn0w only supports tethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3.5. That means every time you reboot your device you have to connect it back to computer and use redsn0w to boot it up.

So if you want untethered jailbreaking, stay away from the upgrade and keep your device on iOS 4.3.3.

This article, iOS 4.3.5 Released and Redsn0w can Already Jailbreak It, was originally published at simonblog.com.

Credit card fraud costs the banking industry billions of dollars every year, and with companies yet to find an entirely secure system for processing payments online, there’s no end in sight for unauthorized transactions. Jumio hopes to bring both security and convenience to the world of online payments, however, with its webcam-based Netswipe secure card reader solution. The system replicates the point of sale (POS) transactions you experience when making in-store purchases, prompting cardholders to scan the front on their credit card, then enter their CVV code using a tamperproof mouse-controlled interface. We’re not sure how the software is able to distinguish a physical credit card from, say, a photocopy of a card, but it certainly sounds more secure than the standard input form we use today. It also reduces card number theft from insecure forms and website spoofing, by verifying details through a live video stream. Jump past the break for the full press release, along with video overviews of Netswipe and Jumio, which recently secured $6.5 million in initial funding and is backed by Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.

Apple added face detection API to iOS 5?

According to Mark Gurman at 9to5Mac, Apple has added face detection API in iOS 5. Apple had previously used face detection on the Mac for everything from iPhoto’s Faces feature to OS X Lion’s advanced PhotoBooth effects, and along the way bought the company behind it, Polar Rose.

We have taken a look at these iOS 5-exclusive APIs and they are highly sophisticated. The first, called CIFaceFeature, can determine through an image where a person’s mouth and eyes are located. The second API, CIDetector, is a resource within the operating system that processes images for face detection.

So while we might see the built in iOS PhotoBooth get the same feature boost as Lion, we could also see other novelty apps, and games, and perhaps one day facial recognition for security. (“Oh, hi Steve. Unlocking your passwords now.”)

Nobody likes to be bombarded with information overload. Very often, people are forced to read through large bodies of text though the same information could be easily summarized in a few short sentences. In fact, social networks such as Twitter are immensely popular as they enforce users to convey meaningful information in 140 or less characters. Till date, I hadn’t seen a text summarizer app for the iPhone and then I stumbled upon Trimit.

The Trimit app uses an advanced algorithm to automatically summarize text to a specified length. The idea is simple yet unique – scan through the text at any URL and apply an algorithm that shortens bodies of text while keeping its meaning intact. Does it sound too good to be true? That’s the reason I installed the Trimit app on my iPhone and decided to explore how good a summarizer would be.

Once installed, Trimit provides instruction on how to use the app. You can swipe to the right to see instructions for editing and mode views. Once you enter the app, it shows the Mode View with various options to limit the text length based on number of characters – 140 (Twitter), 421 (Facebook), 300 (SMS), 550 (Reddit), 700 (Tumblr) and 1000.

Once you switch to the Editing View, you can directly paste the text to be summarized or specify a URL.

The app shows a Trimming progress indicator and once it’s done, the summarized text appears in the editing window and you can shorten it for Facebook, Tumblr, StumbleUpon, LinkedIn, Reddit, Twitter, email, or SMS by simply shaking your phone.

I tried Trimit with a couple of websites as well as few paragraphs from a randomly picked user manual. I have to admit that in most cases, Trimit did a good job of shedding the extra baggage and summarizing the important text. Trimit finds the sentences in the passage of text that are most integral to the passage’s meanings. The only downside – the app crashed once as I was trying to trim down a message to post it on Twitter.

The app originally launched for 99 cents but it’s available as free (for now). Here’s a video of Trimit in action.

Firefox 4 usage share graph

Using some early numbers from both StatCounter and Net Applications, Mozilla’s noisiest hominid, Asa Dotzler, has illustrated Firefox 4′s meteoric rise to around 5% of Web browser global usage share. Internet Explorer 9, which launched two weeks ago, seems to be enjoying a much more casual stroll in the park with just 1.5% of the global Web usage share.

Interestingly, we can see IE9 dipping between March 20 and 21, just before the ‘Important’ Windows Update rolled out. It’s hard to say whether IE9 is only growing because of the installed-by-default Windows Update, but that small dip definitely sticks out — did excitement peter out? Did people download IE9, try it out, and summarily uninstall it? Perhaps, given their close proximity, the stats show an attention shift from Microsoft to Mozilla?

Numbers-wise, if the bottom left corner of the graph shows 2.3 million downloads for IE9, we can guesstimate that that it has now been downloaded 5 million times. Firefox is clocking in at 37 million downloads after five days of public availability.

We wonder whether Microsoft knew its release schedule would coincide so closely with Firefox 4. Internet Explorer 9 — a great browser by almost every metric — was never going to do well against anything emanating from the maws of Mozilla. The main thing, though, is that Microsoft has now shown that it’s serious when it comes to the Open Web. If Internet Explorer 10 is good, and 11 and 12, then we might finally see it compete with the zealous Mozillan horde.

Sony’s new Cybershot point-and-shoot — the TX55 — is a weird little camera. It combines a tiny, slim body with a huge 3.3-inch screen (which takes up almost the entire rear of the camera) and a far-too-large 16.2MP sensor.
It also adds in enough photo-processing software to make older versions of photoshop look like pencil and [...]

Motorola Droid 3 review

Motorola Droid 3

Verizon and Motorola might have launched the Droid 3 with little fanfare, but we’ll have none of that here, folks. We present you with the third installment of the phone that nearly single-handedly put Android on the worldwide smartphone map.

So what’s new with this guy? We’ve got a larger screen, a dual-core processor and a revamped keyboard, for starters. Plus it’s loaded with Android 2.3.4 and has a new version of Motorola’s shall-not-be-called-Blur user interface.

It’s a mix of the familiar and the new. And it’s broken down in full Android Central review fashion after the break.

Still not sold on the device’s ability to help you make a dope digital ditty? Peep the PR and video after the break to learn more.
