Samsung Galaxy S II variant for AT&T images leak out

Samsung Galaxy S II

We have been waiting for quite a while to see some of the US variants of the Samsung Galaxy S II, and earlier this week we saw an un-named slider leak out, and it appears as though that was the AT&T version. BGR has some leaked images of the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S II, which has a slide out keyboard, for better or for worse. It is still yet to be seen whether it will release with a different name, or they will keep the Galaxy S II name, but earlier reports are showing that the devices are set to launch in the US sometime in August, which is right around the corner. So, did the keyboard kill it for you, or are you still interested? Let us know!

facebook ipad logoAre you waiting for the official iPad app of Facebook? As reported by Techcrunch, the Facebook’s iPad app is already here and hidden inside its iPhone app.

Hidden in the code of Facebook’s iPhone app is the code for something else. Something everyone has been waiting over a year for. The iPad app.

Yes, it’s real, and it’s spectacular (well, very good, at the very least). And yes, it really is right there within the code. Even better, it’s executable.

The hidden iPad app was first discovered by @AeroEchelon that you can modify a parameter of the latest version of Facebook’s iPhone app and turn it into a full iPad version.

Procedures to Activate the Hidden Facebook App

If you can’t wait for the official release, here is the guide showing how you can modify the parameter and enable the hidden Facebook app on your iPad.

1. First, same for any hack, you have to use a jailbroken iPad. If you haven’t jailbroken your device, the easiest way is to use JailbreakMe to jailbreak it. Here is the detailed guide of JailbreakMe that walks you through the procedures.

2. Download the latest version of Facebook app on your iPad.

3. Launch cydia and install iFile

4. Launch iFile app and navigate to var -> mobile -> Applications

ifile application folder

5. Tap on the lower-left button and set “Application Name” to ON. iFile then automatically interprets the unreadable folder name for you and turn them into application names.

iFile enables application name

6. Tap on the Facebook folder and then enter the Facebook.app folder.

iFile facebook folder

7. Locate the Info.plist file and tap on it. Select “Property List Viewer”.

iFile Facebook Infoplist

8. Search for “UIDeviceFamily” and tap on it.

9. Change the value from “1″ to “2″ and tap “Done” when complete.

The final step is to reboot your iPad to effectuate the change. Once your iPad starts up, launch Facebook app and enjoy the iPad version!

What do you think about the hidden Facebook iPad app? Do you like the interface? Leave us comment and share your thought.

The iPad version of Facebook app is not officially released. There is always risk when you edit the application’s internal parameter and the iPad version is still buggy. If you think it’s too risky to change the setting, just leave it as it is and wait for the official iPad app.

Update: It appears that Facebook has disabled logins through the iPad version.

One byproduct of computing almost everybody has had to deal with at some time or another is the heat. Whether it’s your Xbox overheating due to poor ventilation, your MacBook’s fan roaring like a jet engine, or some other manifestation, the inescapable truth is that computers these days get warm. Whether it’s a processor, hard drive, or video card, it produces waste heat as its processors and moving parts do their thing. Microsoft Research asks: if these things are so hot, why aren’t we heating our homes with them?

What’s made by Research in Motion and is “shiny, new, and social all over?” No one can say for sure, but according to BlackBerry’s Facebook page, we’re going to find out tomorrow. Might it be the Torch 2 come calling, newly acquired FCC badges in tow? Perhaps Waterloo’s hinting at the Bold Touch, its phone of many flavors. Or, maybe it’s something yet unseen that will blind all who perceive it with a corona of social networking awesomeness. Whatever BlackBerry’s got in store for us, let’s hope it’s not just another phone with a Facebook button.

A new BlackBerry to be unveiled tomorrow, or so Facebook would have us believe originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 25 Jul 2011 21:01:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Survival Lab
In most games, dying is a bad thing. You have to start all over again, or at least revert to the last save point and lose some progress. Not so in Survival Lab: in this pixelated gem you play as a lone individual pitted against ruthless weapons in a sealed chamber. You have to run, jump and duck, collecting little yellow things (I have no idea what they’re called).

For each donut-like yellow thing you pick up, you gain a bit of experience. If you manage to collect several in a row without getting hit, this counts as a combo. You can see my mad combo skills in the screenshot, of course. Collecting combos is a good thing, because a ten-point combo gives you for more experience than just collecting ten dounts one by one (getting hit in-between).

Having experience is useful, because once you die, you get to a screen where you can upgrade your skills. You can learn to run faster, double-jump (and then double-jump higher), and duck. You can also gain more armour so that getting hit won’t kill you so quickly.

What makes this simple game so addictive is that when you die, your experience doesn’t reset. You just go back to the same level, or another level of your choosing, and keep accumulating more and more experience. Lots of fun, especially if you’re into the whole retro-gaming thing.

Trimit for iPhone: Let’s Keep It Short And Simple!

Nobody likes to be bombarded with information overload. Very often, people are forced to read through large bodies of text though the same information could be easily summarized in a few short sentences. In fact, social networks such as Twitter are immensely popular as they enforce users to convey meaningful information in 140 or less characters. Till date, I hadn’t seen a text summarizer app for the iPhone and then I stumbled upon Trimit.

The Trimit app uses an advanced algorithm to automatically summarize text to a specified length. The idea is simple yet unique – scan through the text at any URL and apply an algorithm that shortens bodies of text while keeping its meaning intact. Does it sound too good to be true? That’s the reason I installed the Trimit app on my iPhone and decided to explore how good a summarizer would be.

Once installed, Trimit provides instruction on how to use the app. You can swipe to the right to see instructions for editing and mode views. Once you enter the app, it shows the Mode View with various options to limit the text length based on number of characters – 140 (Twitter), 421 (Facebook), 300 (SMS), 550 (Reddit), 700 (Tumblr) and 1000.

Once you switch to the Editing View, you can directly paste the text to be summarized or specify a URL.

The app shows a Trimming progress indicator and once it’s done, the summarized text appears in the editing window and you can shorten it for Facebook, Tumblr, StumbleUpon, LinkedIn, Reddit, Twitter, email, or SMS by simply shaking your phone.

I tried Trimit with a couple of websites as well as few paragraphs from a randomly picked user manual. I have to admit that in most cases, Trimit did a good job of shedding the extra baggage and summarizing the important text. Trimit finds the sentences in the passage of text that are most integral to the passage’s meanings. The only downside – the app crashed once as I was trying to trim down a message to post it on Twitter.

The app originally launched for 99 cents but it’s available as free (for now). Here’s a video of Trimit in action.

This is one of those posts that could probably be condensed into a tweet: Apple has released the second Preview of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. If you’re running Preview 1, it looks like you’ll first receive a small update via Software Update, and then you can download Preview 2 from the Mac App Store.

There has been some speculation that Apple is getting close to a release or Golden Master build, but judging by 9to5 Mac’s initial findings there’s definitely some way to go. The Golden Master will probably appear at, or just before, the Apple WWDC in June.

So far, it’s looking like the only changes in Preview 2 are the leather bound iCal skin that you can see above, and the main iChat window now combines your AIM, Bonjour and Jabber contacts, like Adium. We’re sure that more details will emerge throughout the day, though, and there’s bound to be lots of invisible changes, too. We’ll update this post when we find out more.

Chrome out your HTC Sensation, let it shine bright

HTC Sensation Chrome

Not a huge fan of the subdued look of the HTC Sensation? Wish that it stood out a bit more, and was more eye catching? So did the folks at Whitesites Blog, and so they took sand paper and metal polish to the device to give it an all-new chromed-out look, as you’ll see above. You’ll also find full instructions on their site if you’d like to trick out your Sensation in the same way. It involves a little time and elbow grease, but the results are worth it, if you’re a fan of shiny things.

Let us know in the comments if you’re planning on chroming out your Sensation, or if you’ve tried your hand at any cosmetic modding in the past.

Firefox 5, 6, 7 and release channels

Mozilla’s Engineering Project Manager, Christian Legnitto, has detailed the release schedule for Firefox 5, 6 and 7. If all goes to plan, Firefox 6.0a1 will be released next week, April 12, and Firefox 7.0a1 in the middle of May. The final build of Firefox 5 should be released on June 21, exactly three months after the release of Firefox 4.

Along with the faster 6-week release cadence, Firefox’s new Chrome-like release channels have also been given names and anticipated update frequencies. The most notable change is the introduction of a new alpha channel — which is analogous to Chrome Canary — that will be called ‘aurora’ and will update nightly. Aurora will be where fixes and features are tested, and either approved for Beta, or backed out to Central. Aurora will have a new icon, too.

The Nightly (mozilla-central) channel will remain unchanged in name and frequency, but it will gain a new ‘nightly icon.’ The Beta (mozilla-beta) channel will remain as-is, with new builds rolling out weekly. The Release (mozilla-release) channel will also remain as-is, with security and stability updates coming every 6 to 12 weeks.

It should be noted that the names (including ‘aurora’) are not necessarily final, but it’s unlikely that they’ll change. We’re also awaiting the arrival of the new ‘channel switching’ technology, which should arrive in the next few days — in time for the release of Firefox 6 aurora!

First Firefox 6 build next week, Firefox 7 by May, and aurora channel introduced originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 05:20:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

SPDY in Google Chrome
We’re not entirely sure of the time line here, but it looks like Google has now rolled out the SPDY HTTP replacement to its full bevy of Web services, including Gmail, Docs, and YouTube. If you’re currently using Google’s Chrome browser you’re probably already using SPDY.

We originally reported on SPDY way back in November 2009, when Google introduced it as yet another experiment in making the Web faster, like Go, Native Client and speculative pre-connections. Over the last 18 months, though, SPDY support has found its way into the stable build of Chrome.

SPDY is basically a streamlined and more efficient version of HTTP. At its most basic, SPDY introduces parallel, multiplexed streams over a single TCP connection — but at the same time, SPDY allows for prioritization, so that vital content (HTML) can be sent before periphery content (JavaScript, video). All in all, the SPDY protocol can halve page load times, which is obviously rather significant.

The best bit, though, is that SPDY is an open-source project. HTTP 1.1 is a lumbering beast that needs to be replaced before low-latency real-time computing really becomes a reality, and SPDY is one of the best options currently on the table. To be honest, we’re not sure why SPDY hasn’t received more coverage — it’s awesome in every way. At the moment, though, the only way to help speed up SPDY’s proliferation, is with an experimental Apache mod.

As far as actually ‘trying it out,’ your best bet is downloading Chrome, hitting up some Google sites, and then checking chrome://net-internals to see your active SPDY sessions. SPDY is a transparent replacement for HTTP, though, and as such it’s rather hard to see its effects. Google’s sites definitely feel fast in Chrome, but there are more technologies than just SPDY at work.

Google Chrome now uses SPDY HTTP replacement, halves page load time originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 11 Apr 2011 07:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

It’s still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple’s mobile platform. And it’s even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple’s tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you’re searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as “touch and decide,” Bing Voice Search is also built in — making it easy to start a query without using the iPad’s on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

Firefox 4 MobileMoments ago, Mozilla stripped the release candidate moniker from Firefox 4 Mobile and pronounced it fit for public release. If you have a Nokia N900 phone, or a fairly-modern Android 2.0-or-later device, go ahead and install it from the Market, by using scanning the QR code after the break, or by visiting Firefox.com/m.

Accompanying the release is the launch of Spark, a cute social game that’s designed to fuel the adoption of Firefox 4 Mobile, much like last week’s use of Glow and Twitter Party during Firefox 4 PC’s release.

While the browser still feels a little rough around the edges, it’s definitely worth trying out if you’re still using Android’s stock browser. Its JavaScript performance is significantly better than any other Android browser, and if you use Firefox on your PC, its built-in Sync functionality is awesome.

Over the next few days we’ll have plenty of tips and tricks for Firefox 4 Mobile, and a list of the best add-ons available for the new browser.

You’d think the UK government would be able to at least afford A4 paper for its printers, considering the amount we pay in taxes. But according to The Telegraph, the HMRC forgot to order enough paper to print tax reminders. More »

With point and shoot cameras apparently now up against a megapixel wall, manufacturers are focusing on adding quirky new features to keep you hooked on the upgrade cycle. Sony’s new Cyber-shot TX55 includes several such additions, such as ‘amazing’ 3D image capture, ‘extremely low’ noise, and a new digital zoom technology called By Pixel Super Resolution, which promises to double the camera’s 5x optical zoom range while still capturing 16.2-megapixel images at full quality. We’re a bit skeptical about that last one, but if the $350 camera really can deliver on its promise, then we may just have a winner. Sony says there’s also high-speed autofocus that can lock onto subjects in 0.1 seconds, optical image stabilization, a 3.3-inch OLED touch-screen, and 1080i AVCHD video. It also includes some features found on the higher-end NEX-C3, such as Picture Effects, and a 42.9-megapixel Sweep Panorama mode. Sony has yet to completely nix the Memory Stick slot, including one with the TX55, though there’s also MicroSD support for those who prefer to take advantage of that more affordable memory card standard. We’re not yet convinced that all of the point-and-shoot cam’s new features perform as well as Sony suggests, but if they do, the TX55 may even be worth its $350 price tag when it hits stores in September.

iSites — a zero-code cloud-based ‘app creator’ — can now generate HTML5 apps that work on iOS devices. With this new feature, dubbed ‘InstantApp’, you can now design a single app in your browser and publish it natively on Android and iOS, and as an HTML5 iPhone app.

We haven’t looked at iSites before, but it shot to fame last year when it launched with native iOS and Android support. Self-publishing Android apps wasn’t a problem because Google does very little moderation of the Market, but iSites ran into trouble with its iOS apps. Thousands of people signed up for the service after it was featured on Mashable and TechCrunch, and you can imagine Apple’s chagrin as thousands of cookie cutter apps flooded its approval queue.

Genwi, the developer behind iSites, realized something had to be done — it had to circumvent the App Store approval process. Genwi, of course, turned to HTML5 Web apps — which can be pinned to the iPhone home screen and which can be shoehorned into almost behaving like native apps.

Read on for our experiences with iSites’ new InstantApp HTML5 iOS app creator.

Having the right programs and hardware to keep the information on your display safe from prying eyes is never a bad idea, and new software from Oculis Labs offers a very interesting take on how to do just that. It’s called PrivateEye, and it utilizes facial recognition to automatically pixelate the contents of your display when you look away.

If you step away from your system and someone else decides to sit down and poke around, PrivateEye will present a confusing jumble of garbled text. It’ll even notify you if someone tries to peek over your shoulder — and display a picture of your peeping Tom, throw up an alert, or sound an alarm.

Check out the video embed after the break, and share your thoughts in the comments!

Eyebrows — those highly mobile facial features that always get raised when people are astonished — got a good workout Tuesday at Apple’s quarterly earnings call. Apple COO Tim Cook surprised analysts by stating that some customers are spending their money on iPads instead of new Macs. There’s long been suspicion that the iPad has been eating into sales of laptop and desktop PCs.

Sams’s Club not expecting the Droid Bionic until September? [Updated]

Costco

Update: Grrr. Sam’s Club, folks. Not Costco.

Fresh in from our folks behind the shelves at Costco Sam’s Club, we have some new info about upcoming releases. In handy bullet point form are the following:

So, that’s that. We’re still in agreement that we’ll see the Droid Bionic sooner rather than later, but these things aren’t official until they’re official. But if you’re waiting to get it at Costco, Sam’s Club you might have a few extra weeks to hang on.

Color, the $41-million-in-funding location-oriented photo sharing startup, is susceptible to simple GPS spoofing. With nothing more than a jailbroken iPad or iPhone, you can use FakeLocation to trick Color into thinking you’re somewhere else. Within seconds you can be browsing photos that were snapped thousands of miles away. With a little digging, you can pore through photos not intended for your eyes.

Of course, such a hack isn’t illegal as such — every photo you take with Color is public. With FakeLocation you are simply circumventing Color’s very limited location-oriented security mechanism. It does undermine Color’s usefulness (and uniqueness), though — if nefarious types can sit in their bedroom or basement and eavesdrop on classy dinner parties and wild night club soirees, people might be less inclined to share personal photos with those around them.

Fortunately, both for Color and its users, this is an easy security hole to plug — at least in the short term. The app (or server-side) code simply checks to see if the user has ‘teleported’ an impossibly large distance, without any intermediate steps in between. In the long term, though, Color’s users must be aware that its social graph is completely public. Color’s users must realize that every photo they upload is visible by anyone, from any place.

After the break, just to elucidate a little on Color’s actual business model and ultimate intention, we have two amazing quotes from Bill Nguyen, Color’s founder.

AT&T Google Nexus S on sale, exclusive to best buy

If you shelled out 600 clams for an unlocked Nexus S, buyer’s remorse starts now: the subsidized AT&T version is out today. Available exclusively from Best Buy (and exclusively in black), the AT&T Nexus S will set you back only a paltry $99 with a two-year contract. Is the loss of color choice (and that whole “SIM-locked to AT&T” thing) worth the savings? We’ll leave that up to you and your (Google) wallet.

Google’s quietly pitter-pattering its acquisitive ways back into the controversial realm of facial recognition technology. To do that, the company busted out its oversized wallet to fold Pittsburgh-based PittPatt into the Mountain View borg. Founded by a trio of PhD’s from Carnegie Mellon University, this three-man strong outfit specializes in the sort of object recognition software you’ve come to know as “tagging.” Is this a reversal of the Do No Evil tech giant’s prior waffling on the dubious visioning tech, or just another massive weapon in its social networking crusade against Facebook? We’d err on the side of both, although the company’s new employees aren’t exactly playing their cards for us to see. A brief statement on the triumvirate’s site makes vague mention of “computer vision technology” being core to Google’s products and points to the tech’s planned integration in photo, video and mobile applications. So, basically, expect to see Picasa, Goggles, YouTube and Google+ watch you as you flaunt your internet celebrity ways to that front-facing camera.

Motorola Droid Bionic accessories shown in blurrycam pic from Verizon earnings report

Bionic details

A tipster that’s "close to the matter" was able to send us this blurrycam shot of a slide shown at the end of the Verizon earnings report, and it includes a few Motorola Droid Bionic details.  This basically confirms the laptop dock, full Bluetooth keyboard, and HD webtop dock with IR remote ability.  There’s no word if any of these docking accessories that already are available for the Motorola Atrix 4G are compatible, but we’re not holding our breath.  It also shows off the chrome banding around the edge of the device, which lends that extra bit of design to an otherwise generic black slab.  Of course the news we all really want to know — the release date — is nowhere to be seen.

Thanks, Anon!

Google is stepping up its efforts to improve computer security by adding warnings to users’ search results when it suspects their systems might be compromised by a certain type of malware. Up to now, Google’s security efforts have focused on the Chrome browser and the Android Market. These new alerts are not intended to be a comprehensive solution — users must still be responsible for their machines’ safety.

Editor’s note: Yoav Shoham is professor of computer science at Stanford University and co-founder of Katango, which organizes Facebook friends into groups The recent introduction of Google+ has been fodder for much Google-versus-Facebook discussion. At the center of the discussion has been the Circles component of Google+, which allows users to arrange their contacts in meaningful clusters (for example, ?family? and ?work?) and share different content with different clusters. Circles play a role that?s almost entirely analogous to Facebook?s lists, which have been around (if somewhat buried in the Facebook UI) for a long time. Facebook of course also has the notion of groups, separate from (and more recent than) lists. Here are some basic observations on lists, groups and circles that seem to have been glossed over in the various recent articles.

For many smartphone users, a quality keyboard is the only feature that truly matters. These passionate devotees will proudly live and die with their thumbs blazing, and for of all RIM’s recent troubles, it’s currently floating on a life preserver: a compelling handset with a portrait QWERTY keyboard doesn’t exist for Android. The HTC Status ($50 on contract) attempts to succeed where others have failed, and — if it’s any good — could entice many BlackBerry-toting teens that want a new handheld fixation. They rarely bother with email, as text messages and Facebook reign supreme for communication. To that end, the Status promotes itself as the perfect phone for Facebook users, but is the integration truly useful, or simply a chintzy add-on? More so, can HTC successfully marry Gingerbread with an upright keyboard? Join us after the break to learn whether we “Like” the HTC Status.

This guest post is contributed by Andy G from bravofiles.com.

Right after Apple started selling the tablet computer iPad with a staggering speed in March 2010 in advance sales and shipping first units in April of the same year, rumours started spreading about someone having returned four iPads in a row because of dead or stuck pixels. He did get a replacement unit each and every time, but that part did not catch the attention of the iPad community, the part with the dead pixels did. Although the Apple policy is to replace any and all units that develop dead or stuck pixels during the warranty and even beyond that if the fault is with Apple and not with the customer, people have obsessed with determining if their own unit has a dead or stuck pixel.

What happened?

While it is quite easy to spot a dead white pixel on a mostly dark screen when multimedia stuff is running, spotting a dead or stuck black pixel is near to impossible. Nevertheless, there is help afoot and all over the internet are people professing to have the best solution available, no purchase necessary. After you have shelled out six hundred bucks for your unit, you surely are not in a mood for another purchase that will show you only that your unit is not pristine. Anyway, it is a common fact that Apple users are high maintenance people, so Apple did them a favour and not only released some applications that can test the iPad, they have also released the iPad 2, that should make your new gadget yesterday’s news.

How do you check for a dead pixel?

The only way how a dead pixel – other than white – can be spotted, is the multicolour test. The iPad guide, a web site dedicated to iPad and the users of the same, is a very “pro Apple” crew with sometimes a critical eye, but generally very fond of their new toy, the iPad. They have a pretty good dead pixel test on their web page where you can browse to with your iPad and download some images of very vivid colours. The resolution of the images is apparently high enough and these pictures provide you with five test screens in white, red, green, blue and black that should help you detect that pesky dead or stuck pixel you are probably convinced to have by now. If there is no dead pixel to be seen, then there is none, no reason to stare at the screens for hours.

Is that the only test available; is there not something more fun?

The iPad academy points out the free iPad app with the name ColorSpin Flashlight. It is basically a multicolour flashlight that changes the hue when you tilt the device. If you rotate your iPad, you can go through the whole rainbow and then some, checking for little black points or, in case of stuck pixels, the ones that refuse to change colours when prompted. While it may not be a very brain stimulating exercise, it certainly beats staring at a single coloured screen for minutes. Perhaps it is better to simply ignore it, until a couple of weeks before your warranty runs out. By then you will most certainly have located anything that is faulty with your iPad and then you can go and ask for a new device, which you will undoubtedly get. Or purchase the newly released iPad2 instead.

O’reilly make some of the best computer books in the world. They also sell them as DRM-free e-books in a bunch of formats, including PDFs and Mobi for Kindle.

They usually offer one “Deal of the Day”, which is a 50% discount code for a book chosen for that one day. But just for for today, they’ve created a discount code — DDJPN — that gives you a 50% discount on their entire catalog, and they give a part of the proceeds to aid Japan relief efforts.

So far they’ve raised over $60,000, and the day is still young. So if you’ve been recently hankering after some nerdy book (or three), now would be a great time to grab one.

O’Reilly helps Japan, offers entire e-book catalog for 50% off, today only originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 22 Mar 2011 14:35:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

iOS OTA updates don't work if you're Jailbroken

If you’re Jailbroken and trying to get iOS 5 beta 4 via over-the-air (OTA) update, you just might be out of luck according to iPhone Dev-Team member MuscleNeard:

The 5.0b4 OTA update won’t work on JB devices due to an explicit check of /Applications..almost like a present from Apple

they check to make sure /Applications is a real directory, which it isn’t in a stashed jailbreak (not sure how unionfs would act)

Never underestimate the resourcefulness of the Jailbreak community, but if you want to try OTA now you’ll likely have to restore to iOS 5 beta stock before proceeding.

Verizon’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE launch date pegged at July 28

Read our complete Galaxy Tab 10.1 review

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 LTE

And there you have it, folks. Looks like the "official" (insofar as leaked launch dates go) launch date for Verizon’s LTE version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is July 28. Interesting is that according to this screen (and confirmed by another at Droid-Life), only the gray version of the Galaxy Tab (see our hands-on with the gray edition) will be available in stores at first — the white version will be direct fulfillment (aka shipped) only.

Pricing remains as previously announced: $529 for the 16GB version, $629 for the 32GB version.

Thanks, anon!

Apple asks Toyota to remove jailbreak Cydia theme

In news that will no doubt shake the very bedrock of your belief system, Apple has asked Toyota to remove its Scion theme and its advertising from ModMyi, a Cydia repository. The Scion theme has been available for weeks, but after it received a ton of press in the last couple of days, Apple finally lashed out.

It’s not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal – but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn’t matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.

This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia’s creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!

As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.

Bliss Software have released their new puzzle game, Rat Fishing.

Are you sick and tired of easy and boring puzzles that finish in a couple of days? Are you still into some girly childish games like Angry *****, or Cut the ****? If you are, it’s time to move on to a real mind bending game. Welcome to the world of “Rat Fishing”!

  • Easy and simple ways to control.
  • Mind bending levels to test your brain and skills
  • Catchy and infectious melody and sounds in the background.
  • Variety of fun ways to kill the rats.
  • Fun, unique and exciting achievements to spice up while playing.
  • 63 different rounds to test your skills.

The puzzle games that frustrate and anger me are always the best kind and boy does Rat Fishing do just that. I will admit to being a little skeptical at first, but this is a great little game! My only complaint is that the mice are a little too cute and I feel bad killing them.

Rat Fishing is available for $0.99. Screenshots and video after the break.

Firefox 4 racks up 25 million downloads in 3 days

If you’ve had your head under a rock for the last few days, here’s this week’s Firefox news in brief: Firefox 4 was finally released.

Yes, 13 months after the initial release of Firefox 3.7 alpha 1 and four more alpha builds, a renumbering to 4.0 and 12 beta releases, and finally a release candidate (or two), Firefox 4 has been released into the wild.

Just like every other Firefox release, initial reception for the new browser has been nothing short of insane. 7.1 million downloads were registered in the first 24 hours and the download rate continued to accelerate, clocking in more than 15 million downloads after two days. At the time of writing, three days in, Firefox 4 has been downloaded over 25 million times. In case you’re wondering, the United States accounts for 7 million of those downloads, just beating out Germany’s Firefox-downloads-per-capita.

But now that you’ve installed Firefox 4 (you have, right?), what do you do now? Well, obviously, in true Download Squad fashion, it’s time to tweak Firefox 4 using add-ons and about:config hacks!

First up is an add-on called Stratiform that lets you change every aspect of the Firefox 4 browser chrome — including the color of that orange button!

RSA attacked using Flash vulnerability

It has emerged that the underlying cause of RSA’s SecurID gaffe was the recently-reported zero-day vulnerability found in Adobe’s Flash Player.

The exploit, which used specially-crafted Flash embedding in Excel spreadsheets, was first reported on March 15 and has since been fixed. RSA was hacked sometime in the first half of March when an employee was successfully spear phished and opened an infected spreadsheet. As soon as the spreadsheet was opened, an advanced persistent threat (APT) — a backdoor Trojan — called Poison Ivy was installed. From there, the attackers basically had free reign of RSA’s internal network, which led to the eventual dissemination of data pertaining to RSA’s two-factor authenticators.

The attack is reminiscent of the APTs used in the China vs. Google attacks from last year — and indeed, Uri Rivner, the head of new technologies at RSA is quick to point out that that other big companies are being attacked, too: “The number of enterprises hit by APTs grows by the month; and the range of APT targets includes just about every industry. Unofficial tallies number dozens of mega corporations attacked [...] These companies deploy any imaginable combination of state-of-the-art perimeter and end-point security controls, and use all imaginable combinations of security operations and security controls. Yet still the determined attackers find their way in.”

What we’d like to know, though, is whether the attack on RSA was caused by Adobe’s lackadaisical approach to patching Flash — or was it the other way around? Was it the RSA attack that first brought the zero-day vulnerability to Adobe’s attention?

Verizon Q2 2011 results: 2.3 million iPhones activated

Verizon has now joined Apple and AT&T in reporting their quarterly earnings, and the big news for us is that they activated 2.3 million iPhone 4 devices. That’s up from last quarter, but perhaps not as many as expected.

In the follow up, new Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam acted shocked — shocked we tell you — that there was no iPhone 5 this summer. He, like the rest of us, expect it this fall. Given Verizon only launched iPhone 4 in February, over a half-a-year later than AT&T, it’s hard to believe they were completely out of the loop on Apple’s roadmap this time around.

Either way, Apple previously reported selling 20 million iPhones this quarter, and AT&T activated 3.6 million. That means 5.6 million of those 20 million iPhones were activated on an official US carrier, and further proves just how much of Apple’s business is increasingly international (gray market included.)

Daily Tip: How to do an iOS OTA update [developers]

iOS 5 developer curious how to do an over-the-air (OTA) update to iOS 5 beta 4 for iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch? Yes, Apple finally pulled the big test switch in the cloud and you can go from beta 3 to beta 4 via a svelte, under 200mb, bit differential (delta) update-in-place rather than the usual beefy 700MB+ iTunes restore of updates past. We’ll show you how, after the break!

Initiating an OTA update for iOS 5 beta 4 is easy as fairly easy pie. Some reports even indicate badge and/or popup notifications will alert you to its availability (though we haven’t seen any on our end… yet). To start it manually:

  1. Launching the Settings app
  2. Tap General
  3. Tap Software Update
  4. (If it gives you an error pop up, just try again later. The Cloud, it strains.)
  5. Tap Download and Install
  6. Watch the progress bar! (This part depends on the speed and quality of your 3G or Wi-Fi signal. Don’t be alarmed if it takes a long time or appears to jump around. Beta means beta!)
  7. Once it’s finished downloading, you’ll be prompted to instal (and restart) your device. If you don’t explicitly hit Later or Install within a few seconds, it will install on your behalf.
  8. Apple will verify the install.
  9. That’s it! You should reboot into iOS 5 beta 4 exactly how you left off in iOS 5 beta 3.

Seriously, once the download finishes it’s amazing quick and smooth Apple may not have invented OTA updates (Chris swears BlackBerry has had them for ages, and Nokia likely invented them in 1812…) but if beta 4 is any indication, they’re doing them right.

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

ChromeLite ASCII extension

Have you ever wondered what the Web was like before the Mosaic Web browser? If you were born in the last 20-odd years, or you only discovered your inner geek recently, did you miss out on monochrome monitors and the dial-up BBS era? Well, here’s your chance to get a sneak peek at history: grab the ChromeLite extension and marvel as the entire Web is transformed into ASCII characters.

Now, ChromeLite isn’t really all that functional. For the most part, it simply strips images and converts text into a monospaced terminal font. There are a few Easter eggs inserted — such as a fun message at the bottom of YouTube (image after the break) — and some fun ASCII art, but that’s about it. Rather oddly, most JavaScript continues to work — so you can still enjoy Google Instant Search!

ChromeLite was actually made by Google as an April Fools’ joke — and indeed, an annoying ‘you can uninstall this!’ message appears at the top of every page — but we’re kind of hoping that Google, or another developer, takes ChromeLite and turns it into a real ASCII browsing extension with configurable settings. If anything, it will provide an easy way to save bandwidth and CPU time.

Google, according to reports from “a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem” is finally locking down the open source and easily-fragmented Android operating system.

As it currently stands, Google hands over the ‘final’ code for each version of Android, and OEMs and developers then spend some time customizing the OS to fit their hardware, and to create a unique and marketable flavor. That’s all set to change, however.

Over the last few months, according to several people familiar with the matter, Android licensees such as HTC, Motorola and Facebook, have been asked to sign ‘non-fragmentation clauses.’ This new contract caveat will give Google the right to review and pass judgment on all changes to the Android OS. Two executives at Facebook say that they’re unhappy that Google gets to review its changes to Android — which is understandable, given Facebook and Google are direct competitors — and there have also been allegations that Google is preventing some Verizon devices from shipping because they include Microsoft’s Bing instead of Google search.

Thrutu App logoEven though Apple claims that the iPhone 4 is all about ‘multitasking done the right way’, its in-call multitasking capabilities leave a lot to be desired. However, mobile app startup Thrutu might change that for good as it lets users share all kinds of information and media while they are on a call. With the Thrutu app, users can see each other’s location on a map, click and share photos, send contact details and even convey touch in a phone call by making the other phone vibrate – all while you are talking on your iPhone.

The Thrutu app has witnesses more than 250,000 downloads on the Android Market, thereby making it a runaway success story. Interestingly, Thrutu is developed by Sequoia-backed Metaswitch, a company best known for its carrier-grade VoIP and IMS systems.

I installed the Android version of Thrutu on my Nexus One and simply loved it. Therefore, I was eagerly waiting for the iPhone version to become available. Once installed, the app prompts you to activate your device for Thrutu usage. In my case, it sent an international SMS to a UK number with the validation code. I received a reply instantaneously with a validation link. I clicked on the validation link and then I was all set to using it.

Once your device is validated, you can open the app and call any of your contacts. Thrutu will start automatically when the phone receives an incoming call from a Thrutu user and that’s when the magic begins. I clicked on the Contacts tab and the app tried to figure out which of my contacts already use Thrutu.

Thrutu App Screenshot

Once it has figured out your Thrutu-enabled contacts, you can start a call and once connected, you can choose what to do from a list of actions as shown below.

Thrutu App Screenshot

I especially liked the feature which lets me share mine and my friend’s location on the map, as depicted below.

Thrutu App Screenshot

And if you want to shake your friend up, Thrutu can do so making the other caller’s phone vibrate right from your phone. And the best part is that it works cross-platform between Android and iPhone. Blackberry support is expected soon as well. Here’s a video of Thrutu in action:

The Thrutu app is free and it works with iPhone 3Gs and iPhone 4 with iOS 4.0 or later. If you are fond of sharing pictures and/ or your location with your friends, give it a shot and let us know what you think about Thrutu.

evoluce win&i windows 7 gesture control kinect
We’ve been looking at some pretty cool Kinect and Windows interactions for a while now, but we were hoping that the release of an official SDK would lead to even more coolness. Evoluce has stepped up, and is now offering Win&I — a full-featured gesture control system for Windows 7.

The company claims that a range of up to four meters is supported, which should be perfect for just about any home theater setting. In the video embedded after the break, you can see an Evoluce demonstrator flip through a photo album, pan through a map, rearrange application windows, browse the Web, and control media playback. Two versions of Win&I are offered — the home version goes for about 20 Euros, the business version for 40.

Anyone else having fun pretending his stance is a little “Iron Man”? We’re tempted to put a repulsor on that hand.

cydia - browser button enhancerNo matter you’re using Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox or Safari as your browser on desktop computer, in some ways, you’re able to access your browser history from the back button. On iPad and iPhone, however, the mobile Safari doesn’t come with this handy feature. It takes you a few taps before you can fully access your browser history.

Now there is a hack called “BackForwardEnhancer” that tweaks the mobile Safari of iPhone/iPad and enables you to access the browser history simply by holding the back button.

I’ve awaited this hack for a long time. It’s not a big feature but just does the work right that improves the browsing experience on both iPhone and iPad. You no longer need to access the browser history from the bookmark. Just press and hold the back button (or forward button). The browser history will pop up instantly. You can then select any one of them and go back to the website you’ve visited. It works just like what you used to have on desktop browser.

Safari Back Button with Browser History

How To Install BackForwardEnhancer through Cydia

While there are more and more paid hacks in cydia, this useful hack is completely free. To install the back button hack, simply launch cydia and search for “BackForwardEnhancer”. Tap the Install button to download and install it. Once complete, your Safari back button is enabled to provide you with the browser history. Just launch mobile Safari to test out.

As usual, you need to have a jailbroken device to make the hack work. If you haven’t jailbroken your iPad or iPhone, you can check out JailbreakMe that offers the easiest way for jailbreaking.

Do you find this hack useful? As always, leave us comment and let us know your thought.

shotshotpirate

Shot Shot Pirate is very satisfying, because each level is short and to the point. You know what you have to do and you just do it.

As you may have gathered from the name, you’re cast in the role of a pirate. Your goal is to shoot at a diamond and make it fall off a tower of bricks. The height of the tower changes as you progress through the levels. It’s not enough to just make the diamond fall off the tower of bricks – it has to fall below a certain line (drawn on the screen) for the level to be completed.

There are also different kinds of bricks, with some heavier than others, and different kinds of ammo. You only get a certain amount of ammo for each level, and when it’s gone, you lose. But don’t worry! If you don’t make it on the first try, it’s very easy to restart the level and just give it another shot (or three).

All in all it’s a cute game. I’ve seen similar games with better graphics and music, but the game delivers on its main promise – a few minutes of pure time wasting!

Revive old software on your device with some emulators

Youtube link for mobile viewing

Looking to kick it old school and play some Contra on your Android device? There’s an emulator for that. Since the release of Android, emulator apps have come and gone — some pulled by Google, some just simply no longer supported any more by their developers. However, if you’re looking to replace some of those that have disappeared you can check out some of the ones available from Marat Fayzullin.

  • iNES - iNES emulates classic NES and Famicom videogame consoles from Nintendo. It plays NES, Famicom, DiskSystem, and VS System games in a desktop window or full screen. Save game at any time and restart from that point later. You can also use GameGenie cheat codes, make screenshots and save game music in MIDI format.
  • MasterGear - The MasterGear emulates several 8bit videogame consoles from SEGA. It plays Master System, GameGear, Mark 2, Mark 3, SG1000, SC3000, and SF7000 games in a desktop window or full screen. You can save game at any time and restart from that point if you get killed, make screenshots, and even save game music in MIDI format to play it later.
  • VGB – VGB emulates Nintendo GameBoy handhelds and their accessories. It plays GameBoy, GameBoy Pocket, GameBoy Color, and Super GameBoy games in a window or full screen. VGB also supports the Pocket Printer, GameGenie cheat codes, and more. Please notice that VGB will not play GameBoy Advance games: you will need VGBA for that.
  • VGBA - VGBA emulates the Nintendo GameBoy Advance handheld. It plays GameBoy Advance games in a desktop window or full screen. Please notice that VGBA will not play classic GameBoy games: you will need VGB for that.

Marat has quite a few others available for more obscure systems as well, if you’re looking to check them out you can hit the source link for more details and download links to all listed.

Lodsys vs. Angry Birds

If you thought Lodsys was done making a spectacle of itself and dragging app developers to court, you were sorely mistaken. The king of the patent trolls has amended its original complaint against mobile devs, removing one company, but adding five new ones — all of them big names. Rovio, Electronic Arts, Square Enix, Atari, and Take-Two Interactive have been added to the list of defendants in the suit filed back in May. Vietnamese company Wulven Games has been dropped from the complaint, but Lodsys has more than made up for it by directly targeting possibly the largest mobile title out there — Angry Birds. You can find the completely amended filing at the source link and, if you’re in the mood for a bit of a refresher, check out the more coverage link.

Lodsys adds Rovio, Atari, EA and others to patent suit, makes birds even angrier originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 22 Jul 2011 09:18:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Apple part of $4.5 billion Nortel patent acquisition

The Nortel Patent auction looks to have been just the first in a series of bidding wars between Apple and Google, as reports now indicate both companies may now be interested in InterDigital, a wireless patent firm. Apple was part of the winning $4.5 billion Nortel patent bid, and according to their 10-K filings, it appears their share of that bid was $2.6 billion.

Google may have lost that one — we’ll know for sure when the dust settles and the sale is finalized — but if InterDigital is any indication, they’ve only begun to fight. Apple licensed InterDigital patents back in 2007 for a 7 year period, but given the stakes, Google might just try to secure as many wireless patents as they can to protect themselves, and the Android platform, from potential lawsuits.

cydia - browser button enhancerNo matter you’re using Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox or Safari as your browser on desktop computer, in some ways, you’re able to access your browser history from the back button.

What can’t graphene do? The wonder material’s been at the heart of a stunning number of technological breakthroughs of late, and now it’s adding oil exploration to its long list of achievements. A team of researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have discovered that the flow of good old H2O over a sheet of graphene can generate enough electricity to power “tiny sensors” used in tracking down oil deposits. The gang, led by professor Nikhil Koratkar, was able to suck 85 nanowatts of power out of a slab of graphene measuring .03 by .015 millimeters. The little sensors the researchers speak of are pumped into potential oil wells via a stream of water, and are then put to work sniffing out hydrocarbons indicative of hidden pockets of oil and natural gas. Of course, that doesn’t have a whole lot of practical application for your average gadget consumer, but Koraktar sees a future filled with tiny water-powered robots and micro-submarines — we can dig it.

    World Backup Day 2011

Those benevolent armchair philanthropist Redditors are at it again! Four days ago a ‘self’ post extolling the potential virtues of a Backup Day exploded with 2500 upvotes and 1000 comments — and now World Backup Day 2011 is actually happening.

On March 31, as part of the global data-saving initiative, you are encouraged to back up all of your cherished photos and videos, and important documents. If you’ve ever had a hard disk fail, and not had a backup to fall back on, you’ll know that it’s a bit like losing a sizable fragment of your soul. If you’ve never backed up your important files — or if you only back up sporadically — do it on World Backup Day!

It’s not hard to back up your data, either. A 2TB drive costs only a fistful of dollars, and it takes just a few minutes to set SyncToy for Windows, or Time Machine for Mac, to mirror your data every night. If you prefer a cloud-based solution, there’s always SugarSync and Dropbox. Finally, don’t forget that Bundlelytic has a charity giveaway for three excellent data-backup-and-recovery tools — $160 of software for only $25, and 100% of the proceeds to go the Japanese Red Cross.

For even more backup options, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, check our list of 13 great backup programs.

The fact that Apple has yet to put out an official announcement for the rumored to-be-upcoming iPhone 5 didn’t decrease the chance of receiving quite a warm welcoming. On the contrary, Apple’s “sealed lips” policy have seemed to have a positive effect on the consumers, generating the “I want the next iPhone so badly” need.

Recent surveys reveal that the market seems set to receive the new model. They suggest that there are already throngs of users looking to jump at the opportunity to buy their very own mobile phone from Apple or just to upgrade the already “obsolete” one.

These surveys do not focus on the next-gen iPhone, but rather look at the market’s opinion regarding the purchase of any of the existing ones as well. The results are astounding. Apparently, 46% of respondents are looking to buy a new iPhone in the next period.

If that is any indication of the current market trend, then Apple is on its way to major profit when the next generation iPhone does actually come out. Of course, the results of the surveys are of no major surprise, if we take into consideration some of the information floating around about Apple, whether they are well known facts or just rumors.

One very important aspect to consider is that when the iPhone 4 came out, Apple had major problems in dealing with the huge demand, so many would-be users decided to go for other devices or just postpone the purchase. But they still want an iPhone. So Apple should really take care of the shipments this time.

Also, we should take into consideration the fact that the new model is rumored to come out through not only AT&T and Verizon, but also T-Mobile and Sprint. That means good news for anyone currently subscribed to one of the new carriers who would like to go for an iPhone.

In conclusion, expectations are becoming quite high for Apple and it seems that most already take the arrival of the iPhone 5 as a given. Will we be in for a major disappointment in the autumn, or is the tech giant going to surprise everyone and take the market by storm, which is not unlike them?

Today’s “clearly disappointing” news from Nokia just got even more clear in its disappointment. As touched on during an earnings call this morning, the Finnish handset manufacturer’s smartphone shipments took a 34 percent dip down from the same quarter last year, to 16.7 million units — that’s markedly fewer than the 20.3 million that Apple shipped during that same time period, as announced in its far more celebratory earnings report. Despite his stated disappointment, however, Nokia chief Stephen Elop insists that the company is on the right track, making “better than expected progress.” Really, it’s important in times like these for a company to focus on the more positive side of things.

    Bing transitions

Bing’s new HTML5-and-CSS3-enhanced search interface, which was first demonstrated back in September 2010 to showcase the power of IE9, has started to roll out.

The most notable addition to the new interface is is smooth page transitions — the fade in and out — and navigation tabs (maps, images, videos, etc.) now persistently float at the top of the page. WinRumors is also reporting that a feature reminiscent of Google Instant search is being added to Bing, with page elements smoothly transitioning in and out as you type in your search query.

If you want to try out the new Bing UI, your best bet is to set your locale to United States – English and pray that you’re part of the initial roll out. Alternatively, just wait a few days until MIX 2011, Microsoft’s Web developer conference, which is when the new Bing UI should be officially launched.

Poll: Would you buy a Nexus S this far into the year?

    Nexus S

Asked this on Twitter earlier today, and let’s put it to you folks: We’re more than halfway through the year, and chances are we’ll see a new Nexus device — whatever it may be — by the end of the year, if Google keeps up with previous schedules. (Though we have no assurances that it will.)

So the question is this: With the possibility of a new Nexus device in the next five or six months, are you willing to shell out for a Samsung Nexus S? It’s a mere $99 on contract, but $529 outright.

BlackBerry PlayBook has a newer version of Android than 81% of you

    BlackBerry PlayBook Android

Our pals at CrackBerry are in the midst of testing a recently leaked version of the Android Player app for the PlayBook tablet. And guess what: It’s running a newer version of Android than some 80 percent of you guys out there. When last we looked, some 18.6 percent of Android devices were running Android 2.3.x. (Honeycomb devices made up less than 1 percent on top of that.)

And RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook? Why, it’s running Android 2.3.3, while some 59 percent of you out there are still officially stuck on Froyo, and another 18 percent are on Eclair.

    Food for thought.

Dead Space for iPadOne of the more popular game genres in the market today is survival horror. For those who have become a fan of the Dead Space series in the console or PC, much is expected in this release of Dead Space HD for the iPad. You play the role of an engineer tasked to explore the mines in the game. You are caught between the web of controversy between the Church of Unitology and the Earthgov. As many of you know, that means a trip through the abyss with the Necromorphs. The main concern with Dead Space HD by most purists before its release is that it might not stand up for the occasion when compared to the other previous releases of the game. The iOS they say wasn’t meant to hold a game such as this and walk with laurels thereafter. Fortunately, for the rest of us expecting Dead Space HD on the iPad, there is so much to flap our ears with.

The controls in Dead Space HD are simplistic though some may take a good ten minutes to get used to it. The directional controls will be from your left thumb and other controls will be made through your right pointing finger like aiming and shooting as well as choosing options. In addition, a tilt with the screen can help you switch modes of firing. Did we say firing? Yes there are sweet guns in Dead Space HD, however, unlike their game cousins, you will not buy your weapons but instead you acquire them as you go along with the game. Particular weapons such as the saw gun and plasma cutter make good of your arsenal as your battle throes of Necromorphs that seem to appear in every unsuspecting corner. The in game experience is something worth noting, the intelligent use of lighting made every scene as immersive as it can be on the viewable area of the iPad. Levels are well rendered and the characters and objects share the same features. If you haven’t picked up this game yet, then stop holding your horses now and purchase this game pronto.

Dead Space HD is a welcome addition to the number of titles on the iPad. No longer will the iPad be frowned at when it comes to more complex games because Dead Space HD has been neatly done for this device. The story on Dead Space HD is in between Deadspace and Deadspace 2 and it does tie up the two game pretty well. In fact, you do not have to possess an idea about Deadspace universe in order to enjoy the whole game experience. Kudos to the makers of this game who thankfully did not just ported a console game to a smaller device such as the iPad. If you fancy a little scare from time to time and would like to do it with your mobile device, then Dead Space HD will not disappoint. It is a refreshing take on a genre which was originally conceived to be played only on larger screens.

Q Pang for iPhone LogoAlien invasion from above might not seem like the most original premise for a shooting game, but once you meet Bobtan Studio’s Q Pang, you might just change your mind.

This fresh little casual shoot ‘em up game sets players up against an invading force of a jiggly green alien race called “Q.”  The Qs’ natural enemy, of course, is a fierce feline defender of worlds and baker of cakes. I mean, it just plain makes sense.  Nothing slows down a horde of power-hungry Q like a comically huge slice of cartoon cake.  Except maybe the quirky fan weapon, or the voracious vacuum, or the gun toting tabby’s merciless machine gun.  Placed at the bottom of the screen, the courageous little cat’s job is to keep the Q from touching down on the planets they’re attacking.  This task gets progressively harder as the game continues through each of the challenging five stages offered by each of the five planets.  To ensure a Q-less future, the player will need to utilize weapons upgrades and change their tactics to deal with the evolution of the Q threat.

    Q Pang Screenshot

Thankfully, the control system is just as simple as it has to be to manage the vast numbers of Qs the player will have to deal with in the upper stages of the game.  Q Pang might be unusual (to say the least) in plenty of ways, but the controls are entirely intuitive.  Center the sights on the Q, fire.  That’s about it.

The game’s best feature, aside from its ridiculously charming attitude, is its depth.  Its concept is light and it’s ruthlessly adorable, but it’s saved from being too saccharine by the combo of devastating cuteness and devastating… alien devastation.  The need to develop new strategies per level also gives players something to sink their teeth into.  It’s one more surprise from a game that is one creative delight after another.  It’s nice that Bobtan Studio isn’t taking their success with this game lying down, too.   Instead of resting on their laurels, they’ve updated Q Pang with new firepower (an ice boom and a laser weapon) and new environments and enemies, including a ghost temple complete with ghostly Q to kill.

    Q Pang screenshot

Visually, Q Pang is non-stop entertainment.  The endlessly energetic little cat that composes the last hope against the Q constantly delights with over-the-top expressions, costumes, and general joie de vivre. Or, joie de alien-slaughter, perhaps.  The Q present evil in one of the most adorable manners I’ve seen in a game; their blobby little green bodies are so ugly they’re cute.  Between the edgey, weird attitude of the game’s graphic charm and its amusing audio take on traditional arcade background music, Q Pang is as fun to look at and listen to as it is to play.

Q Pang offers a lot for a great price. It’s on the iTunes App Store now for $0.99, or free for the lite version which is a lot less than such creative, polished, playable games often go for.

Trying to figure out how to easily add holidays and sports schedules into the iPhone or iPad Calendar app? Lucky for us Apple actually solved this problem quite a while ago for Mac iCal users. Simply subscribe to Apple’s already built calendars and you’ll be all set. Read on to find out how!

Sure, you can manually add calendar subscriptions right on your iOS device, but finding them and tapping them all in can be a pain. iCal on Mac makes it simple, and if you’re already syncing, it can save you some time and effort!

    1. First, open iCal on your Mac.
    2. Next, from the top menu choose Calendar and then Find Subscriptions.
    3. Your web browser should open and direct you to Apple’s iCal calendar downloads page.
    4. From here you can browse from many calendars. Choose the one you want and click Download next to the calendar name.
    5. Your computer will ask you what program you want to open the file with. iCal should be highlighted. If it’s not, select it and tap Ok.
    6. iCal will automagically open and show you the subscription link. Simply click Subscribe. You should now see the subscribed calendar in your side bar and the events should now be added to your calendar.
    7. That’s it! Simply sync your iPhone or iPad and your calendars will come down. If you have MobileMe, it’ll do it by itself with no syncing required.

If you guys subscribe to calendars via Apple, which ones do you use? I find these especially handy for things like holidays and sports schedules as well as astronomy calendars. We live on the beach and sometimes I want to know what time the sun is setting. Sure I can use a weather app but it’s nice to be able to set alarms for nights I know I’m going to be around the beach area. How about you guys, any calendars you found that you think are especially cool?

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

We know that Google+ is growing like a weed, with more than 10 million registered users (some say close to 20 million now). Experian Hitwise takes a stab at estimating the early growth of Google+. For the week that ended July 16, the Google+ domain (plus.google.com) was still tiny with 1.8 million total estimated visits. However, that number was up 283 percent from the previous week, and up 821 percent from the week before. On a daily basis, estimated visits peaked last Thursday on July 14 with 317,000 estimated daily visits. That number settled down to 226,000 by July 18th, the last day of the data set.
