Attracted by all that Cedar Trail gossip about 10-hour battery life and weeks of standby time? Then you’ll be pleased to see that Asus’s Eee PC 1025C and higher-end 1025CE models have received their nods from the FCC. Both pack the latest 32nm Atom processor under their 10.1-inch hoods, along with an HDMI-out, Kensington lock and flush trackpad. The CE additionally serves up a USB 3.0 port, 4x zoom on its webcam and a metallic finish. NetbookNews got some hands-on time with these babies at Computex and reported prices of $249 and $279 for the C and CE respectively — whet your appetite at the More Coverage link.

Firefox 4 usage share graph

Using some early numbers from both StatCounter and Net Applications, Mozilla’s noisiest hominid, Asa Dotzler, has illustrated Firefox 4′s meteoric rise to around 5% of Web browser global usage share. Internet Explorer 9, which launched two weeks ago, seems to be enjoying a much more casual stroll in the park with just 1.5% of the global Web usage share.

Interestingly, we can see IE9 dipping between March 20 and 21, just before the ‘Important’ Windows Update rolled out. It’s hard to say whether IE9 is only growing because of the installed-by-default Windows Update, but that small dip definitely sticks out — did excitement peter out? Did people download IE9, try it out, and summarily uninstall it? Perhaps, given their close proximity, the stats show an attention shift from Microsoft to Mozilla?

Numbers-wise, if the bottom left corner of the graph shows 2.3 million downloads for IE9, we can guesstimate that that it has now been downloaded 5 million times. Firefox is clocking in at 37 million downloads after five days of public availability.

We wonder whether Microsoft knew its release schedule would coincide so closely with Firefox 4. Internet Explorer 9 — a great browser by almost every metric — was never going to do well against anything emanating from the maws of Mozilla. The main thing, though, is that Microsoft has now shown that it’s serious when it comes to the Open Web. If Internet Explorer 10 is good, and 11 and 12, then we might finally see it compete with the zealous Mozillan horde.

Firefox 4 rockets to 5% global usage share, IE9 wallows at 1.5% originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 05:31:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/29/intel-to-aquire-telmap-dole-out-easy-to-implement-location-apis/In case you weren’t watching, Intel’s Elements 2011 Keynote slipped in a sly acquisition announcement: the firm recently signed a deal to absorb Telmap, an Israel-based outfit whose location platform is the backbone of countless navigation apps. Intel’s Peter Biddle says the navigation firm is to become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Intel, and will help AppUp developers pack their apps with unique location capabilities via Telmap’s standardized APIs. Biddle wraps it up simply enough: “New advanced capabilities with just a few lines of code.” Details on the deal are scarce, but hit the source link below to see Biddle’s full statement in Intel’s AppUp wrap-up.

Report: 41% of Mobile Users Plan to Buy iPhone 5

iPhone 5 with A5 Processor4th October is still a week away and I’ve to admit that I’m not a very patient person, especially when it comes down to Apple product announcements. I spend several hours every day hoping to unearth Apple’s most closely guarded secret – the iPhone 5 specs. There’s a great sense of anticipation about the iPhone 5, truly reflected by a recent report from inMobi which reveals that 41% of current mobile users in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada plan to buy an iPhone 5—potentially making it the most successful launch from the consumer electronics giant to date.

The inMobi survey also indicates that nearly 50% of the surveyed users said they’ll purchase the iPhone 5 within the first six months of the launch. The general mood is that Apple will unveil a new device (iPhone 5) running on a new operating system (iOS 5). If Apple decides to launch a product update instead (an improved iPhone 4), only 15% of consumers are likely to buy the new handset.

As many as 52% BlackBerry users, 51% of current iPhone users and over one in four (27%) Android owners are reportedly planning to switch to the iPhone 5. The report suggests that BlackBerry users are the most disgruntled lot, as many as 28% of current BlackBerry smartphone owners plan to switch even if Apple unveils a product update such as the iPhone 4S. Those are startling numbers and it could effectively mean that Apple’s smartphone share could climb again, giving Android devices a run for their money. The holiday season is not too far and Apple might benefit from its traditional practice of launching a new iPhone around June each year.

Most iPhone 5 prospect customers want an improved battery life; increased processing speed; higher-quality screen resolution; and stronger phone service. However, two critical questions – how many distinct iPhones (a low-end iPhone 4S and a high-end iPhone 5) and their specs are likely to be answered only next Tuesday. Apple is a market leader in terms of innovation and customer loyalty and the recent inMobi survey is a testimony to the company’s supremacy.

The clock is ticking for the new iPhone launch next Tuesday and I totally hear it every second. What about you?

dropspace

Dropbox offers a lovely client for Android, but it’s lacking true “sync” functionality. You can merely browse your Dropbox, pull files into the device, and manually upload specific files.

DropSpace is a little Android app that makes Dropbox on Android work like Dropbox – that is, you get real folder synchronization in the background.

When you run the app you’re prompted for your Dropbox credentials. After logging in to Dropbox, you get to select which device folders you’d like to sync to the cloud. It’s a straightforward mapping process: You select a folder on the device, and then specify where in Dropbox it should go.

The interface is rather clunky, at least for now. The biggest annoyance is that you can’t edit your “sync list”: if you add a folder and then wish to remove it, you must delete the entire list of folders and start over.

In terms of functionality, it works quite well. I tested it with the camera folder, and it was nice to be able to take my photos using the lean default Camera app and have them sync up to the cloud instantly.

DropSpace adds real Dropbox sync to Android originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 04 Mar 2011 12:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

During a presentation at Macworld Asia, China Unicom revealed that, as long and widely rumored, iPhone 5 will support HSPA+ networks.

Japanese IT news site “PC Watch” tells that, Research vice president of China Unicom, Huan Wenliang, told iPhone 5 will support W-CDMA based high-speed data transfer standard HSPA Evolution “HSPA+” (21Mbps) at keynote speech in Macworld Asia 2011.

While HSPA+ is really a 3.5G technology, T-Mobile, AT&T, and now many other carriers have been marketing it as 4G for a while now in order to compete with real 4G networks like Verizon LTE. (Turns out it’s easier to print 4G on a box than build out an actual LTE network, go figure?)

It will be interesting to see how an HSPA+ iPhone will be marketed by AT&T. Will Apple let them call it a 4G iPhone?

google chrome 11 proxy
Google Chrome 11 — which just recently made the move to the browser’s beta channel — has received a minor update that gives developers access to two new APIs.

The first is a full-featured proxy API, which will, for example, allow users to set different proxy servers for normal browsing and Incognito mode. Proxy auto-config scripts are also supported by the API.

The second — Web Navigation Extension — is a bit more expansive. This API will allow devs to build everything from more powerful safe browsing extensions — like Traffic Light — to data analysis and reporting extensions.

Both APIs are currently experimental, so you’ll need to enable them on the about:flags page to try out any relevant extensions. Apart from a proxy example built by Google and shipped with the Chromium source, we’re not aware of any examples just yet, however. We’ll let you know when we spot any slick, new extensions which do surface.

Chrome 11 beta adds new experimental APIs for proxies, Web navigation originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 08:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

It may not be addressing complaints from those bemoaning the need for a Facebook account in the first place, but Spotify is now at least giving folks an easy way to listen to what they like without broadcasting it to their friends. That comes in the form of a new “private listening” mode, which can easily be turned on and off at will — the other option is to unlink your Facebook account completely. Hit the link below for details on both options.

Spotify users get a ‘private listening’ mode, Facebook account still required originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 29 Sep 2011 17:46:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

There’s a new Sensation on the block that’ll be making its way to China Mobile, but rather than rehashing more of the same, this release marks the first smartphone to place ST-Ericsson’s NovaThor SoC under the hood. Unlike offerings from Qualcomm, the chip inside the Sensation Z710t offers a dual-core A9 processor along with connectivity to the carrier’s TD-SCDMA infrastructure. Other specs are expected to remain the same, which includes a 4.3-inch qHD display and 8 megapixel camera. Unfortunately, press photos weren’t released, which suggests its design hasn’t changed. You’ll find the full PR after the break, heralding this latest Sensation among the top-tier of China Mobile’s offerings. While pricing or a release date have yet to be announced, we’re inclined to agree.

HTC announces the cost-effective Explorer for India and Europe, coming in Q4

HTC Explorer

HTC announced their newest smartphone this morning called the Explorer, which represents an affordable device headed to India and Europe. We tend to get excited about the top tier phones but the lower-cost devices such as the HTC Explorer are equally just as game changing as they will allow more people with varying incomes to buy a smartphone.

Here are the specs for the HTC Explorer:

  • 3.2-inch touchscreen with 320 x 480 resolution
  • 600 MHz processor
  • 512 MB internal storage
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 3 MP camera
  • WiFi (802.11 b/g/n)
  • Bluetooth 3.0
  • 1230 mAh battery

The phone will be coming to the India and EMEA markets in Q4 and will be available in three colors: Metallic Black, Active Black and Metallic Navy. No word yet on how much it will cost, but given how HTC is marketing it, the price will be very low relative to other smartphones. In the UK, Vodafone has already announced that it'll be carrying the device.

To discuss the "affordable" HTC Explorer in more depth, check out our Android News Forum.

Price was one of the recurring themes at today’s Amazon event in New York City, and nowhere was that factor more present than with the new Kindle. At $79, this truly is an entry level device, and certainly the company made some sacrifices to hit that price point — most obviously, the reader doesn’t have the touchscreen featured in both the Kindle Touch and the latest Nook and Kobo devices — though like those products, the Kindle did lose its physical keyboard, giving it a much smaller footprint than the last generation. In place of the infrared touchscreen are a series of buttons: Home, Menu, Keyboard and Back. In the middle is a toggle button that lets the user scroll through menus — that activity can be performed pretty quickly with the physical buttons, and flipping through pages is not problem with the familiar buttons on either side of the screen. Where one really misses the presence of touch, however, is with the on-screen keyboard — typing is performed by clicking one’s way through the virtual keyboard, a familiar task for anyone who has ever entered their name at the beginning of a video game with a console controller. Of course, typing is a secondary task on a device like this, so for many users this may not be a deal-breaker. For those who foresee the need for such functionality, however, $20 will buy you an upgrade to the Kindle Touch.

scrabblehelper

If you play Scrabble (or a scrabble-like game) from time to time, you may want to check out Scrabble Helper. This simple website is a godsend when you’re at a loss for words. Simply enter whatever letters you have, and the word you’d like to connect with. Scrabble helper comes up with a whole bunch of suggestions sorted by score.

The site lets you select one of five dictionaries – Scrabble International/US, Lexulous International/US, and Words With Friends. Some people might say this constitutes cheating — I think if the other side knows you’re doing it, it’s definitely not cheating. And it doesn’t take the challenge out of the game, because implementing Scrabble Helper’s suggestions and deciding which words you’d like to connect with still takes a fair bit of thought.

Very handy, though perhaps not one for the Scrabble puritans in the crowd.

Photo Academy for iPhoneMy friend Bonnie bought a DSLR Camera and hardly knows how to use most of its features.  In my quest to find out what most of the features were, I stumbled upon “Photo Academy”, a photography encyclopedia of sorts which I think is really helpful.

So What’s Photo Academy?

The App covers the basics like how to hold your camera to the effects of adjusting ISO and exposure settings. There are hundreds of tips on using the ideal camera settings to maximize your pictures, great for beginners like me.  Starting with Photo 101, Explanations are offered for the differences between compact cameras and DSLRs along with basic tips and tricks.

There are more detailed explanations on analysis of exposure modes, all camera settings, composition advice and equipment explanations. Information is also provided on the importance of depth of field, the histogram, why RAW format is used rather than JPEG and even a section on photo editing afterwards.

Expanding on this – the “How to” section covers every combination of subjects that can be photographed. Everything from aquarium situations, safaris, babies, candid shots, cityscapes, festivals, food, disabled sports, extreme sports and macro photography of flowers is covered.  This includes general tips, appropriate camera settings to use, relevant equipment, lighting tips, and creativity tips.  There is also a gallery of images, which was a collage of well taken shots.

Finally, there is a section called Shoot Diary.  Here users can record their latest photos along with notes, the date, location and weather conditions.  Here you can have a journal your photography experience and watch it improve.

Summary

The reason why you start the young on hobbies is because they have the time to indulge in finding a pastime and submerge themselves in whatever suits them.  Unfortunately for me, managing a young family along with some of my other pet projects have made such time scarce.

However, it is Apps like Photo Academy that can really help make sense of basic Photography concepts easily.  The alternatives of doing more research or joining a class would simply be too time consuming.

Photo Academy is available on App Store for $2.99. It supports iPhone, iPod touch and iPad running iOS 4.0 or up.

You’d be forgiven if talk about Cyborg Rats made you think about precision gaming mice, but in this case we’re yapping about the real thing. A team from Tel Aviv University has found a way to restore lost motor function in rodents by building a digital cerebellum. As the story goes, they anesthetized a rat, disabled its natural abilities and installed the device — and were able to teach the chip to make the rat blink when a sound was played. It’s all very early-days, but the hope is to develop implants to aid people with long-term disabilities — or to ensure our sewers are crime free. For those not paying attention, rat-brained innovations are on the up: in June, researchers at the University of Southern California were able to construct an artificial memory, not to mention last year’s Tokyo brain-car. After all this mistreatment, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Cyborg Rats sided with the machines in the forthcoming Robopocalypse. Which, you know, is exactly what we need weighing on our conscience.

Apple reportedly has scaled back orders for iPad parts — possibly by as much as 25 percent for the fourth quarter. There is a good deal of skepticism about the report’s accuracy, though, along with plenty of conjectures that could explain the change, from the mundane (geographical redistribution) to the sublime (design changes in the works).

MacPhun LLC has updated their popular iPad photography app, FX Photo Studio HD. It now has 7 new effects and the Masking Studio that they recently introduced to the iPhone version of FX Photo Studio.

The new Masking Studio is such an awesome addition to FX Photo Studio. I thought it was great on the iPhone, but on the iPad’s big screen, the Masking Studio is amazing! You can zoom in real close to make sure you don’t miss any details, and while painting (or erasing) the mask, a little box pops up in the corner so you can see precisely where your finger is placed on the photo. Very cool.

Powerful, creative and intuitive application to keep everyone amazed with your photography.

  • 194 photo effects and filters: lomo, vintage, art, tilt-shift, 3-D, textures, blurs, graffitti, pixelate, 3-D, etc
  • Masking – paint with effects
  • Color Splash Tool
  • Import from Facebook
  • Share to Instagram and other popular social networks

The update includes:

  • Masking Studio: apply effects to any part of the image
  • Color splash tool: apply selective colors to the image
  • 7 new effects, including 3-D filter
  • Performance improvements – with some filters 2X faster processing
  • Improved editing tools: gamma, saturation, hues, etc
  • Improved in-app camera
  • Possibility to import images from Facebook
  • Instagram sharing
  • Centering for Tilt Shift, Radial Blur effects
  • Printing via Air Print
  • Square crop option
  • Enhanced user interface

We’ve seen all shapes and sizes of iPad cases, with varying degrees of utility. But, if you have use for a desktop PC-style dock / keyboard combo, you may want to check out some of the new offerings in iLuv’s WorkStation Series. First up is the iMM737, featuring a wired keyboard with iOS function keys that can be stowed in the dock’s base when you’re not typing away, a tilting / rotating bracket for easy customization and built-in speakers. Next, the iMM517 boasts an adjustable slate holder of its own, a Bluetooth keypad and jAura Sound technology. Need something a wee bit more portable? Perhaps the iCK826 or the iSK912 Professional WorkStation Portfolio cases will suit your workflow. Both offer a wireless set of keys that are detachable, should the need arise. Only looking for a keyboard? That’s an option too with the iBTKB20. You can grab any one of these you’d like for $180 to $50, from top to bottom. You’ll have to wait until November to pick up the iMM737, though — everything else will be hitting stores this month. Check out the gallery below for a look at all the above mentioned add-ons, or peep the full PR after the break.

Samsung and Google appear poised for some possible Ice Cream Sandwich at CTIA

Samsung-Google at CTIA

Allow us a little inside baseball here. We normally don't post every event we're invited to at the usual trade shows. We'll be there, and you know we'll be there. But this one's a little different.

Behold the invitation to the Samsung Mobile Unpacked 2011 "Google Episode" at CTIA in San Diego. So, first, it's the "Google Episode." That's new. Second, they're going to stream it for everyone to see, live on Youtube. Normally such bandwidth is reserved for Google events. And this very much appears to be a Google event.

So we're going to figure we've got some Ice Cream Sandwich in our future in San Diego. Some Nexus Ice Cream Sandwich. Some Samsung Nexus Ice Cream Sandwich.

We'll see you there.

Creating apps for Ubuntu is about to get a lot easier, now that the folks over at Canonical have launched the Ubuntu App Developer platform. On the new site, developers will find guides, tutorials and other resources to help them create apps specifically for the Linux OS, or to port other apps to the platform. Once finalized, these apps can then be published on the Ubuntu Software Centre, where developers can choose to either offer them for free, or at a price. In announcing the new platform, community member David Planella predicted that it will offer a “unified and consistent journey for both open-source, non-commercial and commercial app authors.” He went on to acknowledge, however, that there’s still plenty of work to be done: “For all its current awesomeness, we are aware that the site needs to pass the test of a wider audience, adapt to their needs, and grow.” Find out more at the source link, below.

Mega Recorder+: The Most Advanced Voice Recorder For iPhone
Though I love my iPhone, I’m not a big fan of Apple’s built-in voice recorder app. In fact, after having used sophisticated recording apps such as Vox Studio and Awave Audio on my PC, using the iPhone voice recorder simply sucks. Mega Recorder+Though I love my iPhone, I’m not a big fan of Apple’s built-in voice recorder app. In fact, after having used sophisticated recording apps such as Vox Studio and Awave Audio on my PC, using the iPhone voice recorder simply sucks. Therefore, I’ve been scanning the App Store for feature rich voice recording apps for the iPhone and I recently stumbled across Mega Recorder +.

How the App Works

Once installed, the app shows a listing of your existing recordings. You can add or delete recordings by clicking on the respective buttons.

The app lets you sort the recordings by date, length, name or priority. I like the concept of priority especially as it lets me determine which recordings I want to see on the top of the list.

A note to the Mega Recorder + app developer – it should be ‘Length’ not ‘Lenght’.

The Settings tab lets you choose a large number of configuration parameters related to recordings. These include audio quality (low 8 kHz, Good 22 kHz, Best 44.1 kHz), audio format (AIFF, WAV, AIFC, CAF) and auto pause threshold duration. You can also choose to turn of the beeps during the recordings.

While such advanced audio configuration options are common for desktop tools, I’ve never seen any other iPhone app offer such capabilities. So, on the feature richness scale, the Mega Recorder + app scores a thumbs up. The ‘Create Recording’ screen is equally advanced and lets you choose a variety of parameters such as Play Speed, Repeat Flag etc. You can pause/ stop recordings, move them to Trash, cut and rewrite your recordings.

Once you start a recording, the Record button toggles state to ‘Stop Recording’ as shown below.

I tested the audio quality on all 4 formats – AIFF, WAV, CAF ,AIFC and it sounded pretty good. All in all, Mega Recorder + is a comprehensive
voice recorder for the iPhone with lots of unmatched capabilities.

Great App but…

My only major concern is that Mega Recorder+ is so advanced that there’s a learning curve involved in getting used to the user interface and various features. Secondly, the support site is part Russian and part English. It would be nice to have 2 separate Support pages – one for each language.

Priced at 99 cents, Mega Recorder+ is great value for money for people looking for a sophisticated voice recording app for their iPhone.

pastebin

Pastebin is a very popular website aimed at coders and other nerdy types, which allows them (or should I say, us) to paste and share snippets of code with lovely syntax highlighting.

It has recently undergone a major overhaul which includes the release of a brand new Windows client. The new client lets you create new “pastes” and manage your existing ones. It joins a host of other tools from Pastebin, such as the Google and Chrome extensions, OS X widget and the mobile apps.

If you’re currently using Pastebin, the new client is a great addition. And if you haven’t tried it before, next time you have a piece of code you want to share or get some feedback on, you could do worse than try out Pastebin.

[Thanks, Jeroen!]

The promo video for Xume’s quick-release camera filters starts off in typical infomercial style, with a klutz ham-fistedly trying to do something that’s actually pretty easy. But this doesn’t take away from the neatness of the product, a filter attachment that uses magnets — frikkin’ magnets! — to speed up an otherwise tedious task.
It’s ingeniously [...]

T-Mobile addresses the iPhone (or lack thereof) to customers

In a company blog post earlier today, Cole Brodman, Chief Marketing Officer for T-Mobile USA, told customers that they were interested in offering a “no-compromise iPhone experience” on their network, but offered little details on the negotiations between the carrier and Apple.

We’ve heard from many customers who love their T-Mobile service, but are disappointed that we don’t carry the iPhone. To these customers, first, thank you for your business. Please know that we think the iPhone is a great device and Apple knows that we’d like to add it to our line-up. Today, there are over a million T-Mobile customers using unlocked iPhones on our network. We are interested in offering all of our customers a no-compromise iPhone experience on our network.

One interesting takeaway is the current amount T-Mobile customers using an unlocked iPhone on the service. Although T-Mobile has never offered the iPhone to its customers, over a million users have been able to unlock the iPhone to run on the network.

Funny, though, that Brodman went into how T-Mobile offers a plethora of Android devices to cull would-be iPhone users until they’re officially under the Apple umbrella. Given recent surveys suggesting roughly 31 percent of current Android device owners are planning on jumping ship to the iPhone as their next purchase, this doesn’t bode well for T-Mobile who currently has the lowest number of US customers (around 32 million).

It will be interesting to see how the AT&T/T-Mobile merger plays out and if that will have any impact on T-Mobile finally offering the iPhone to its customers.

evernote web

Evernote, the popular multi-platform ‘digital memory’ app, has done some serious re-tooling of its Web interface. In addition to a more polished UI that more closely mirrors the look of Evernote on the desktop, the update brings features like notebook stacks and snippet view to the Web.

Auto-saving is now enabled as well, and you can select multiple items by holding down the Cmd or Ctrl key on your Mac or Windows keyboard. If you’ve got items stored in your notebooks that you want to share with friends or co-workers, Evernote has improved that process, too. You can quickly post an item to Facebook, share it via email, or generate a Web sharing link to paste into an IM conversation or status update.

Head over to the Evernote Web login page to try out the new interface.

Despite one of its execs pegging this spring’s lengthy PSN outage as a “great experience” the folks at Sony have been pounding the pavement to drum up consumer morale. Back at IFA, the outfit unveiled its new all-in-one Sony Entertainment Network, and its already giving the VOD wing, Video Unlimited, a facelift. Starting today, PS3 owners holding a PlayStation Plus subscription can download the creatively titled “Video Unlimited-preview” app from the PlayStation Store. According to Sony, the new user interface is all about giving the people what they want, and in this case that means a streamlined UI, with big bright graphics and understated, glowing blue text. It also means Gracenote integration, opening up the possibility of endless rabbit-holes of related content searches. We had a few minutes with the new setup, and found ourselves searching content related to Danny McBride’s Your Highness under categories like “Bumbling Buffoons” and “Mythical Beasts,” although we could just as easily have called up titles featuring the film’s director or any of its stars.

If that’s not enough of a departure from the conventional video on demand arrangement, the new UI also features “tumbler search technology,” which abandons regular keyboard-style input for PS3 controls — click the right button to select a letter as you scroll vertically through the alphabet. This “patented technology” also autocompletes your query and similarly takes advantage of Gracenote’s database, allowing you to search by title, actor, director or tag. The new UI is specific to the company’s video service and is currently only available via the PS3, but we’re told it will roll out to the entire network and supported devices sometime in the future. All PlayStation Network users will be able to download the preview app starting October 11th, check out a video preview embedded after the break.

Sprint halts Optimus S Gingerbread update

Optimus S

While many folks celebrated the release of Gingerbread for the LG Optimus S on Sprint, seemingly not all went as planned. A number of users have ran into some issues with the update as listed below:

  • Device not charging
  • No access to data services
  • SD card un-mounted or removed message
  • Device is not recognized by Windows XP, Vista, or 7 when connected to a PC
  • Predictive text with the Android keyboard is not working

Sprint has been actively tracking the issues as well as some of the possible workarounds for the situations listed above. No date has been set for a fixed version of the update but they are working to get things sorted out as soon as possible. Until then, it's probably best you stay away from the update.

Members of the creative class, your input options have arrived. Wacom, maker of the tablet you’ve spent countless deadline-driven, bleary-eyed nights slaving over, has outed a trio of updates to its Bamboo line — each targeted to a particular user profile. At the low-end of this newly introduced range, home office / business users can opt-in for the company’s pen-only Bamboo Connect, which’ll set you back about $80 for the base goods. But the real enhancements to a graphic designer’s best friend comes via the wireless-capable (courtesy of a separate $40 RF dongle) Capture and Create models — available for $100 and $200, respectively — that add multi-touch functionality for “gesture-based input such as scrolling [and] zooming.” While the latter entry is essentially a luxe, double-sized (and double-priced) version of the Capture, all of the tabs come bundled with a specific suite of PC and Mac-friendly software, and a pressure-sensitive, eraser-tipped pen. You can snag these latest Wacom family members right now, or if your wallet needs more convincing, feel free to peruse the PR after the break.

Be part of the Cinderella Story with with Cinderella animated picture book for iPad [Kids Corner]

Nosy Crow has released their newest animated storybook, Cinderella. It’s the same story that we’ve all grown to love, only this version allows you to add your child’s picture to the magic mirror!

What a great way to add more excitement to this classic story! Growing up, I had a book that was personalized with my name and loved it, but that’s nowhere near as cool as having your face included the story! I can’t wait to read this to my niece – I know she’ll love it.

You know the fairytale. Now experience the magic! Created in HD especially for iPad. Nosy Crow’s Cinderella app lets you play inside the story. Beautiful illustrations, exciting animation, and original music make this a picture book app at its best.

  • Help Cinderella clean the kitchen.
  • Stack the King’s invitations to the ball.
  • Dress up the Stepsisters for the party.
  • Build the magical carriage with the Fairy Godmother.
  • Select the music for the Prince and Cinderella and watch them hit the dance floor! Do you want a waltz, disco or Bollywood?
  • You can even choose Cinderella’s dress!
  • With the front-facing camera on iPad2 you can even see yourself in the “magic mirrors” in many scenes in the story!
  • Pick a reading mode: either Read to Me, Read by Myself or Read and Play.
  • Choose how long text stays on the screen so beginning readers have enough time to read by themselves.
  • Choose between American or British spelling styles.
  • Help is embedded into the story. Characters offer hints about what to do on each page so even very young readers can participate fully.
  • Tap the characters to trigger additional dialogue.

Cinderella is available on the iPad for $5.99 .

Spotify wants to be the next big thing in music, but a change to its service has created quite the uproar online: users can only get their Spotify on if they have a Facebook account. Of course, we knew this was in the works from the time it opened its doors to all Americans, but netizens were sufficiently vocal in their disdain for the change so as to elicit a response from the company. According to Spotify, most of its users are already on the Social Network — plus the service uses Facebook on the backend for its social features — so it made sense to integrate the logins. Rest assured, you don’t have to connect your account to Facebook unless you want to, and users still control what they share and don’t share in their Timelines. We understand why the move doesn’t thrill everyone out there, but we’re okay having one less username and password to remember. Change can be a good thing, ya know.

Snapseed for iPhoneI have never understood the importance of Apps for Editing Photos.  Its one of those things you need to use first to appreciate.  However, if the App make its easy to dramatically alter your photos with a well thought of interface, its an added bonus.  For ease of use and features, Snapseed has always been on the top of the list for me.

Simplicity at your Fingertips

Most editing Apps have a bunch of features, more so on the PC versions.  One of the main reasons behind Snapseed’s success is its simple to use interface that relies mostly on gestures.  Yes, gestures. Snapseed’s creator – Nik Software – has created an interface designed to be gestural. This makes Snapseed easier to use than any other iPad image editing application.

A quick help screen greets you when you fire up the App.  You can then use their sample images or load any other image you wish from your Album. You have a selection of features to select:

  • Automatic
  • Selective Adjust
  • Tune Image
  • Straighten & Rotate
  • Crop
  • Black & White
  • Vintage Films
  • Drama, Grunge
  • Center Focus
  • Organic Frames

Tap whichever feature you wish to use on the image and you are led to a help screen on how to use the particular feature.  I have taken the liberty to summarize how to use them:

(1) Tap on screen

(2) Swipe up and down to select additional feature

(3) Swipe left and right to vary the effect

(4) Stretch or Pinch for Area of effect (on certain features)

Its that Simple!  There are other options on the status bar, you can choose to apply the edit, or hit the Back button to discard it.

Snapseed Edit Image

Selective Adjust Mode

Most of the controls (Swiping) seem pretty simple and a refreshing concept was the Control Point (Point 4).  Control Point is an ingenious way to creating complex selective adjustments

  • In Selective Adjust mode, add a Control Point.
  • Tap with two fingers (stretch or pinch) to change the area of the intended effect, then swipe up or down within the area to select the feature you wish to adjust adjust (Brightness, Contrast, or Saturation)
  • Then slide left or right to change that parameter

The Control Point will sample the color or effect at the point where it was placed allowing you to pinpoint your effect on various parts of the Image.

Summary

Snapseed is a wonderfully crafted App.  The controls are so simple and yet a pleasure to use.  Nik Software has set the benchmark for other editing software with Snapseed.  I must add that it was quite an experience using Snapseed.  The kick was in seeing how simple gestures were able to create effects which usually took multiple taps and slides using other software.  I would recommend Snapseed to tidy your images and have a great time doing it too.

Snapseed is available on App Store for $4.99.

To learn more about the app, check out the video demo:

Galaxy Player 5.0

In addition to the Galaxy Tab 8.9, Samsung also introduced its new line of Galaxy Players tonight, an attractive option for those who want the functionality of an Android-powered Galaxy device without the monthly data charges. And a fine option it is: the Galaxy Player is up-to-snuff with some of the best Android devices on the market. It comes in two flavors: the 4.0 has a 4-inch screen Super WVGA Super Clear LCD at 800 x 480 resolution, while the 5.0 has a 5-inch, WVGA TFT LCD display at 800 x 480 resolution.

The Galaxy Players are powered by Gingerbread 2.3.5, which means they support everything you've come to love from your Android smartphone, minus of course the phone calls. Each has 8GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot which can handle up to 32GB. And while Samsung hasn't officially announced what's under the hood, whispers at the Samsung Portfolio event suggested a 1 GHz single-core processor with 512 MB of RAM. We'll confirm that closer to the Oct. 16 release date, when the 4.0 will hit for $229 and the 5.0 for $269. Photos commence after the break.

Japanese Phrases FREE is a language learning app which recently caught my eye at the App Store. It is a feature-packed app that presents a cool way to learn Japanese lessons. It is designed to make language learning fun and is apt for beginners who are eager to pick up conversational Nihongo (Japanese).

Japanese Phrases FREE has a collection of commonly used words and phrases which are organized into several categories. Users listen to them being pronounced, see them in writing, understand their meanings and usage and learn them through continuous practice. This makes the app dynamic and easy to use.

Japanese Phrases Screenshot #2Japanese Phrases Screenshot #1

The app introduces you to basic Japanese vocabulary and simple grammar lessons. There are more than 700 audio recordings which make your learning interactive and enjoyable. As you listen to the words being voiced over by a native speaker, you learn how to pronounce them correctly and with sufficient repetition, you can easily master them.

There is also feature that lets you view the phrases you aren’t familiar with, more often, so that you know what exactly you’ve got to focus on. You can even mail phrases to your friends to let them know how your Nihongo vocabulary is increasing.

I found the quizzes to be very helpful in checking my progress at the end of each lesson. The study bank feature helped me save words for later reference. The search tool is particularly useful when you have a specific word in mind which you need to look up right away.

As the app doesn’t require a network connection, it is convenient to use it even when you are traveling. Japanese Phrases FREE guided me as I took my baby steps in learning Nihongo. I’ve picked up a lot of words used in conversations, developed a liking for the script and my interest in the language has increased manifold. I look for opportunities to use the new words I learn everyday and I feel more confident about my pronunciation. This app is a great tool to get started with learning the language.

Want to learn Japanese for free? Grab Japanese Phrases at no cost from the app store.

Ex-Facebook dev talks about iPad app delays

Jeff Verkoeyen, an ex-Facebook developer who was the lead engineer on the Facebook for iPad project, wrote on his personal blog about the internal battle that took place between him and Facebook, and goes a long way to explaining why we still haven’t seen the app.

It is now nearly 5 months since the app was feature complete and I haven’t seen it released except for when the project was leaked on Techcrunch. Needless to say this was a frustrating experience for me. The experience of working on this app was a large contribution to the reasons why I left Facebook, though that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a difficult decision.

MG Siegler at TechCrunch suspects the delay may be tied to negotiation issues between Apple and Facebook, even though Apple would do well in having an official Facebook for iPad app in the App Store. As you may recall, they were in talks for upwards of 18 months on the Ping deal that ultimately fell through at the last minute because Facebook demanded too much in terms of user information.

But Apple has always wanted Facebook to release an iPad app. The Facebook iPhone app is the most downloaded app of all time. And there are countless third-party Facebook iPad apps that are amongst the top downloads all time, even though most aren’t very good. At first, Facebook wasn’t going to focus on the iPad. Then they decided to, but they also realized the app could be used as leverage in their dealings with Apple. That’s what we believe has been going on over the past several months.

It’s also possible that the delayed iPad app has something to do with Facebook’s Project Spartan, an app store that will offer games and news apps that run inside Safari, or as Web Clips on the home screen. Facebook and Apple could be working together on the HTML5 project, prompting continuous delays for the iPad app as deals are hammered out.

Robert Scoble also chimed in last week (on Google+ of all places) noting that Facebook may be holding off until Apple’s iPhone 5 announcement on October 4th.

By the way, I heard a rumor from a usually credible source that Facebook may not announce an iPad app tomorrow, but will save it for October 4th instead. Now THAT will be very interesting news, since I know Apple really hates Facebook.

Either way, our patience is wearing thin… In the meantime, check out our Top 5 Facebook Apps for iPad to hold you over until the official app is released.

Thankfully styled like the more dashing cousin in the typically awkward-looking compressed air car family, Toyota’s Ku:Rin (meaning Air-Wheel) has smashed the speed record for cars powered by (not necessarily hot) air. Sure, measuring a svelte 0.8m across, there’s certainly no space for the kids or the groceries, but it can reach a maximum speed of 80.3MPH. All that driving force is generated from compressed air which acts as the fuel, expanding and powering the single motor. Don’t expect air compressors to replace those petrol pumps just yet — the range for this streamlined beauty is a meager two miles. Take a look at NHK‘s report in More Coverage for redefining of “blown away.”

The Internet has eliminated boundaries with regards to expressing your views.  The blogosphere has allowed everyone to have their little soapbox to express their views for people to follow, tweet about, and discuss.  Personally, I am a closet introvert.  I don’t have that much I wish to share about, so I have avoided starting any sort of Blog (personal or otherwise) despite encouragement from friends.

For those that are avid (or not) Bloggers, there is a good chance that they use (or have used) Blogger – by Google.  It is great news then that Blogger is now available for the iPhone and iPod for blogging on the go.

Installing this App will allow you to publish posts with attached pictures, location information, and labels. It also allows easy switching between accounts if you have multiple accounts. You can view a list of published or saved posts. After writing, you can either choose to publish it immediately or save it as draft.

Using the App

Upon firing up the App, you can sign into your Blogger account or create a new account.  Once you are logged in, you get to the screen where you can write your first post.

With Blogger, Google keeps it simple with 3 buttons.

Blog – Here you can write, tag, attach photos (from camera or library), and location

View Blog – this is where you view what you have posted.

Settings – Here you can switch to a different account, set the size of image you wish to post, or sign out.

Blogger App for iPhone

Here is the official rundown on Blogger’s Features:

  • Post pictures from your device’s camera roll or pictures you’ve just taken using your device
  • Add labels posts
  • Add location information
  • Save a post as draft or publish immediately
  • View a list of all your saved or published posts
  • Switch Between Blogger Accounts

blogger posting

The line is definitely blurring between Blogger and other Social features like Google+ for single paragraph posters like myself.  For now I think I will stick with my semi dormant Google+ account unless I have more to share.

But if you have a blog on Blogger, do check out the official Blogger app which is free for download!

internet explorer 9 ie9

Microsoft has shared some news about the state of its most and least loved Web browsers — Internet Explorer 9 and 6, respectively. Even with IE9 only recently exiting beta, Microsoft reports that 3.6% of Windows 7 users are now running the new browser (no mention of Vista… what’s with that?). The post also reveals that the adoption rate is almost five times what IE8 garnered in the early going.

It’s also interesting to note that there are now more than 1,000 sites utilizing Internet Explorer 9′s Windows 7 integration features — like the new desktop notification support we showed you in Hotmail.

But perhaps the best news of all is that Microsoft’s IE6countdown.com now has more than 400 partners and is generating nearly two million pageviews per month, helping to lure users away from the woefully out-of-date browser. Can the end come soon enough, DS readers?

Internet Explorer 9 nears 4% share on Windows 7, IE6 extinction countdown picks up steam originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 01 Apr 2011 09:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

I have a 11-year-old daughter and I bought her an iPod touch as her birthday present. As you know, you need to have an iTunes account in order to download app. But I don’t want to share my account with my daughter as it’s linked directly to my credit card. What can I do?

If you also have children, you probably face a similar problem. In brief, I have two advices:

1. Register an iTunes account without credit card
2. Set up iTunes Allowances for your kids

For the first option, I have written a detailed guide showing how you can register an iTunes card without credit card. Simply follow the steps to get an account and your child can use it to download apps. The only downside is that your kids are limited to download free app.

If you want to let your child to download both free and paid apps from App Store, the second solution may be suitable for you.

What’s iTunes Allowance?

The iTunes Store features a purchase option called “iTunes Allowance”. An iTunes Allowance provides you an option to send a monthly iTunes Store credit to a family member (or friends, etc) in an amount from US$10 to US$50. Each month, your chosen amount will be automatically added to your child’s iTunes Store account.

With iTunes Allowances, you can control how much money your kid can spend on iTunes store.

How to Set up iTunes Allowances

Setting up an iTunes Allowances is a very straight forward process. However, this feature is not available to all countries.

To configure an iTunes allowances, open iTunes on your computer and click “iTunes Stores”. In the home page of iTunes Store, click “Buy iTunes Gifts” in the Quick Links section. If you can’t find the option, it’s likely iTunes Allowances is not available in your country.

Scroll down to the Allowances section and click “Set up an allowance now”.

Input your kid’s Apple ID, select your preferred monthly allowance (from $10 to $50) and fill in other information as requested. Finally, click “Continue” to complete the setup.

mozy vmware

Mozy is one of the most popular cloud backup services around, with more than one million users storing around 70 petabytes of data. Its popularity apparently put it on the acquisition radar of VMware — which has now made Mozy part of its virtualization empire.

VMware’s official blog post makes it clear that the company wasn’t so much interested in Mozy as a consumer offering. Rather, it’s the inner workings of Mozy which piqued VMware’s curiosity. CTO Steve Herrod says, “Over the past 5 years, Mozy has built one of the best examples of a globally distributed, large-scale cloud offering.” He adds that the move will allow VMware to “further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale, and capabilities” of its existing offerings.

Existing Mozy customers don’t need to worry, of course. VMware has pledged to continue running Mozy’s service without interruption.

For most people and an iPad is part of their lives. This is because the ipad is the best tablet pc in the market. They are many tablet pcs today but none offers impressive specs than the ipad. This is the main reason why it ws even featured on the Oparah show. Many consumers use the iPad for my reasons ranging from reading eBooks to reading their emails and for entertainment. You can buy iPad at many stores both online as well as offline.

An ipad has become part of our lives and we tend to take it with us, it is the most sold Apple product after the iphone. On first glance one can mistakenly be forgiven to think that a ipad is just an over sized iphone, because the two looks some what similar. But on close inspection you will realize that they are lots of differences between the two. The display of the ipad makes it the best way in which you can read your eBooks and even watch movies, because it is big and crisp clear.

The screen alone should not be only reason why you should decide to buy ipad. It features many impressive features such, responsive touch interactive apps, a 1 GHz processor and a GPU for intense gaming. You should remember that whatever you can do on your pc or laptop you will be able to it on your iPad.

Many people however have decided not to buy ipad yet, as they were rumors of that they is already the ipad3 to be released soon. The specs of the new up coming ipad has made many people reconsider wherether to buy the ipad or wait for the new one to come in to the market. One thing you can be sure of Is that the ipad3 will have more improved specs and cost more.

The ipad is and will be the main foundation of all ipads that are going to be released in the future. Even though many people might consider not to buy an ipad because of the latest ones, one thing to keep in mind is that Apple is continuously offering software updates to the ipad to make it more advanced and user-friendly like the latest other ipads.
Why not come into our store and have a look!!

There’s nothing like a family portrait, and the Xoom 2 brothers have paired up for this year’s Christmas card shot — or at least for an anonymous tipster’s latest leak. These pictured tablets give us a better look at the rear-facing buttons we heard about last week, which appear to be a power button and a volume rocker. The smaller sibling sports the same “Fleming” moniker we saw in yesterday’s images, the same 8.2-inch screen size as previously reported, and appears to be about as thick as a 9.3mm iPhone 4. Combining with This is My Next’s intel, it appears that both tablets are of very similar thickness. Around back? A few stickers, again spelling out the smaller tablet’s codename and outing LTE compatibility.

Interestingly, our tipster tells us that both slates share the Fleming codename, along with Android 3.2 goodness and five-megapixel HD cameras on the rear, though both prototypes are also “buggy as all hell, with frequent reboots and crashes.” This could mean that we’re still some time away from seeing the original Xoom’s successors, so for now, check out our gallery below to get an eyeful for yourself.

Update: Our tipster has confirmed LTE for both devices.

T-Mobile HTC Amaze 4G sighted, looks like the Sensation’s big brother

Android Central

We've seen blurry-cam shots of T-Mobile's HTC Amaze 4G before, but now it seems we may have the first set of leaked press shots for the phone, along with a more detailed list of device specs to boot. T-Mobile blog CellphoneSignal has published what look like official promotional images of the Amaze 4G, as well as details of what's lurking within the chassis.

As we heard last month, it looks like the HTC Amaze 4G is a 4.3-inch device with a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon CPU, 1GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel rear camera. CellphoneSignal says the device is targeted as a replacement for the myTouch 4G, which is interesting considering the lack of myTouch branding, and the fact that it seems to be running vanilla HTC Sense. We have to admit, though, the design is highly reminiscent of Tmo's myTouch line.

Other reported specs for the Amaze 4G include a qHD (960×540) display, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, HTC Sense 3.5 on top of Android 2.3, Bluetooth 3.0, and most interestingly, support for HSPA+ speeds of up to 42Mbps.

The Amaze 4G is reportedly due for release "in a few weeks", possibly adding some weight to the rumors of an Oct. 26 release date that emerged back in August, based on a leaked T-Mobile flyer.

dodge

Space-shooters are usually a fairly fiery affair, with many types of guns, weapon upgrades, power-ups and more. Dodge does away with all of that, while keeping the very essence of a space shooter: Dark background, fast action, and stuff blowing up all over the place.

Your vector-looking spacecraft is the fastest thing on the screen, most of the time. And as the header implies, you have absolutely no weapons; you can’t get any, either. All you have is agility and maneuverability.

Your opponents shoot heat-seeking missiles at you; the missiles lock on and start tracking you. The trick is to dodge the missiles while putting them in the path of one of your enemies, thus letting them have a taste of their own medicine.

There are three types of enemies, at least in the first few levels: “simple” spaceships which fire slow projectiles, “tanks” which seem to be more serious and take more hits to destroy, and “circles.” The circles simply explode, spewing twenty or thirty very fast projectiles. This sounds dangerous, but is actually great once you learn to use them; they are very destructive for tanks, and can even blow up other circles.

The soundtrack is very techno, but it meshes very well with this type of game. Intense fun!

Samsung Captivate on Rogers gets its Gingerbread update via Kies

Captivate

If you're a Rogers customer and using a Samsung Captivate, this weekend would be a good time to hook it up to Kies — there's an update to Android 2.3.3 waiting for you to grab and install.  Reports say that this one doesn't wipeout all your user data, but it does reset your homescreen(s) configuration, as well as improve Wifi reception and address the mass storage issues a few had with the Froyo update.  Sounds like an awesome tradeoff to me.

Installation seems pretty painless, be sure you're running the latest version of Kies, then download and install the file.  It takes just a few minutes, and you're left with a Captivate that runs much nicer than it did yesterday.  If you run into any issues, sound out for help in the forums and lets the expert community get you on the right track.

Keepon co-creator Marek Michalowski stops by the studio to discuss the creation of his little yellow robot and explain how the dancing ‘bot made the journey from research tool to retail toy.

We swing by the Maker Faire in New York to check out 3D printers, a life-size game of Mouse Trap and get stuck in the (Polaroid) Matrix. And Make: Live co-hosts Becky Stern and Matt Richardson join us in the studio to talk about some of their own favorite DIY projects.

Finally, click “Continue” to complete the setup.

balance

Years of computer use have taught us that the mouse cursor is “above” the windows. It doesn’t push anything around; at least not without you clicking anything.

Balance takes that ingrained bit of knowledge and cancels it out. Suddenly your cursor (a blue dot) is solid – and if it touches the blue block, it pushes it around.

Your job is to use your cursor to nudge the blue block over to the orange block. You will have to push it, lift it and even flip it on its side, and then balance it. It’s a very tricky game – one I wouldn’t recommend tackling with a laptop trackpad.

Still, if you have a mouse and a hankering for a little physics gameplay, this is a cute little game. I like how the blue block never stops smiling, it makes me feel better about the world.
