A massive and totally unseasonal snow storm hit the Northeast over the weekend, saddling millions of trick-or-treating runs with lame winter jackets and disapproving parents. But! There are some really great things about an extremely unseasonable nor’easter, too. More »

HTC ships nearly twice as many phones in Q3; profits up 68 percent

HTC

It's good to be HTC, no? The Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer released its Q3 2011 earnings this week. It shipped some 13.2 million phones, nearly double that of Q3 2010 and some 9 percent higher than the second quarter of 2011. After-tax profits were up 68 percent over a year ago to $18.68 billion.

A couple of areas HTC continues to focus on, it said in its earnings release, are China, and LTE. It's expecting further growth in LTE handsets in the United States (Verizon's got LTE now, and AT&T's in the midst of rolling it out), as well as Japan, Korea and Hong Kong. HTC also reaffirmed its commitment to the entry-level market, citing the HTC Wildfire as a top-seller.

And speaking of growing, HTC has 2,000 stores in China, and a factory in Taoyuan will be completed early next year and could increase production by 40 million phones a year.

So, yeah. It's good to be HTC.

It’s safe to say that Q3 2011 probably won’t be remembered as Cablevision‘s finest. According to the provider’s latest earnings report, profits declined by a full 65 percent over the year, with net income plunging to $39.3 million this quarter, compared with the $112.1 million it raked in during the third quarter of 2010. The company also reported a loss of 19,000 video subscribers during Q3, though it added 17,000 broadband customers and 38,000 telephone subscribers. Total customers, however, declined by 15,000 over the past three months. Revenue, meanwhile, increased by eight percent to $1.7 billion, though the New York-area operator lost about $16 million to Hurricane Irene — not to mention all those legal fees. Smell that? That’s a big platter of PR, sitting right there after the break.

shotshotpirate

Shot Shot Pirate is very satisfying, because each level is short and to the point. You know what you have to do and you just do it.

As you may have gathered from the name, you’re cast in the role of a pirate. Your goal is to shoot at a diamond and make it fall off a tower of bricks. The height of the tower changes as you progress through the levels. It’s not enough to just make the diamond fall off the tower of bricks – it has to fall below a certain line (drawn on the screen) for the level to be completed.

There are also different kinds of bricks, with some heavier than others, and different kinds of ammo. You only get a certain amount of ammo for each level, and when it’s gone, you lose. But don’t worry! If you don’t make it on the first try, it’s very easy to restart the level and just give it another shot (or three).

All in all it’s a cute game. I’ve seen similar games with better graphics and music, but the game delivers on its main promise – a few minutes of pure time wasting!

tarzanball

So, you’re a ball. A Tarzan Ball, to be precise. You’ve earned the nickname thanks to your astonishing ability to shoot out a lengthy ‘vine’ (I hope it’s a vine) at objects, and then pull yourself towards those objects.

That’s a handy ability to have, especially since you’ve got no legs, no arms, and no other means of transportation. In Tarzan Ball, the rope is everything. But you don’t just swing around the screen aimlessly – that wouldn’t be much of a game now, would it?

Instead, your goal in life is to collect “targets”. Each level has one of these “targets” hidden away somewhere on the screen, usually behind some kind of barrier. Once you navigate close enough to the target, you can shoot your rope at it and just reel it in. That’s when you pass the level.

You can’t die in this game, but it can still be very frustrating. It’s actually one of the tougher games I’ve posted recently. Still, if you enjoy physics games, this one is quite nicely made.

[This is actually the sequel to IQ Ball, which we covered last year! -Ed]

Firefox 4 racks up 25 million downloads in 3 days

If you’ve had your head under a rock for the last few days, here’s this week’s Firefox news in brief: Firefox 4 was finally released.

Yes, 13 months after the initial release of Firefox 3.7 alpha 1 and four more alpha builds, a renumbering to 4.0 and 12 beta releases, and finally a release candidate (or two), Firefox 4 has been released into the wild.

Just like every other Firefox release, initial reception for the new browser has been nothing short of insane. 7.1 million downloads were registered in the first 24 hours and the download rate continued to accelerate, clocking in more than 15 million downloads after two days. At the time of writing, three days in, Firefox 4 has been downloaded over 25 million times. In case you’re wondering, the United States accounts for 7 million of those downloads, just beating out Germany’s Firefox-downloads-per-capita.

But now that you’ve installed Firefox 4 (you have, right?), what do you do now? Well, obviously, in true Download Squad fashion, it’s time to tweak Firefox 4 using add-ons and about:config hacks!

First up is an add-on called Stratiform that lets you change every aspect of the Firefox 4 browser chrome — including the color of that orange button!

burritobison

Burrito Bison is a pretty simple game, but if you’re into gummy bears you might find it addictive.

As you may have guessed from the name, you’re a bison (not a burrito, though). In the course of your day-to-day grocery shopping, you’re abducted into a bag of gummy bears, and must now fend for yourself.

At the beginning of each round you launch yourself onto the marching gummy (gummi?) bears, while you’re being watched by a huge crowd of even more gummy bears. Your goal is to keep bouncing on the bears and earn more and more money while you do it. Every time you hit a gummy bear, you lose some momentum. If you hit the floor, you basically lose all of it.

But don’t give up just yet! You have an emergency thrust which you can use to gain some momentum and keep bouncing on those bears. This extra thrust gets refilled as you hit more bears.

There are also special gummy bears that give you extra thrust or extra money. The money comes in handy at the end of each round, when you can shop for cool stuff to make your bison even more effective against those gummy bears.

It’s a fun and colorful game that kept my interest for quite some time, and almost sent me running to the closest store to get some gummy bears!

Wladimir Palant, developer of the most popular add-on in the world, Adblock Plus, is also an active contributor to the Planet Mozilla blog community. Over the last few days, in response to Mozilla’s new name and shame list of slow add-ons, Palant has been investigating whether Mozilla’s testing methods are actually accurate.

Rather surprisingly, it turns out that Mozilla’s numbers could be significantly wrong — and if they’re not wrong, the factors that Mozilla uses to tabulate an add-ons final score should definitely be made more transparent.

In the first set of tests, Palant shows that FlashGot’s position in the top 10 is probably due to a fault in Mozilla’s testing setup, and that add-ons can perform very differently depending on which operating system they’re being tested on. In the second analysis, Palant uncovers an irregularity that doesn’t seem to have an obvious cause — but it could be due to an I/O bottleneck on Mozilla’s test machines. Basically, even though performance testing of Read It Later is disabled because of a bug, it still (somehow!) manages to record a 14% slow-down on Windows 7.

Palant concludes both analyses by scolding Mozilla for going public with the performance data before its testing methods had been confirmed accurate. It definitely looks like Mozilla has been more than a little reckless, considering the importance of Firefox’s add-on ecosystem.

google chrome 11 proxy
Google Chrome 11 — which just recently made the move to the browser’s beta channel — has received a minor update that gives developers access to two new APIs.

The first is a full-featured proxy API, which will, for example, allow users to set different proxy servers for normal browsing and Incognito mode. Proxy auto-config scripts are also supported by the API.

The second — Web Navigation Extension — is a bit more expansive. This API will allow devs to build everything from more powerful safe browsing extensions — like Traffic Light — to data analysis and reporting extensions.

Both APIs are currently experimental, so you’ll need to enable them on the about:flags page to try out any relevant extensions. Apart from a proxy example built by Google and shipped with the Chromium source, we’re not aware of any examples just yet, however. We’ll let you know when we spot any slick, new extensions which do surface.

Apple airs new iPhone 4S commercials: Siri, Camera, iCloud

Apple has released 3 more iPhone 4S commercials, a second on Siri along with one focusing on the new 8mp, 1080p camera, and one on iCloud.

  • iCloud highlights automatic iTunes Music downloads across devices, Documents in the Cloud propagating updates, iBooks bookmarks copying themselves from iPhone to iPad, and Photo Stream taking the pictures from iPhone and popping them into iPhoto.

  • Camera shows the fast camera access from the Home screen, pinch-to-digitally-zoom, on-device cropping and red-eye removal, and Twitter integration.

  • Siri focuses on “what does may day look like”, pulling up the day’s appointments, “can I walk to the Belvedere Hotel from here”, pulling up Maps and directions, “read me that text”, reading the last last SMS message, and “do you think it will snow today”, bringing up the Weather app.

All of this, of course, “on the most amazing iPhone yet”. Check them out below.

App for That: How to wirelessly send videos from your iPhone to your iPad

There are hundreds of thousands of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps for just about everything — so how come the one you need, the one you know just has to be there, is so hard to find? Enter TiPb’s new weekly feature where staff and readers alike sort through the App Store and help you find just the right App for That. This week, Sean asks:

I am a father to a four and a half year old baby girl and keep up with a blog that I created shortly after she was born to chronicle my fathering experiences as well as her forays into the big wide world. I do all this blogging solely from my iPhone 4 and iPad 2. I take pics and video on my iPhone and then write the blog posts on my iPad later in the day. Photos are not an issue as I just mail them to myself and then save them to my camera roll on the iPad, but Videos are the bugger! Is there an app out there that will let you save video to your iPad’s camera roll that you have captured with your iPhone?

Ideally, Photo Stream and iCloud would include the ability to sync videos between devices, but until that happens, we must go to the App Store to find a solution. To see what we found for Sean, follow along after the break!

PhotoSync [$1.99 - App Store link] is exactly what Sean needs! This little gem allows you to share photos and video from one device to another, including your Mac or Windows computer – and it’s super easy to do.

In Sean’s case, he would tap sync on his iPad and select the option to receive photos and video. Then on his iPhone, he’d tap the photo and videos he wants to transfer, and choose to sync them to another device. He’d then select his iPad from the list and start the sync. Once the sync is complete, Sean will find the videos in his iPad’s camera roll.

The transfers rate is up to 2.5MB/sec, so depending on the size of the files, it can take a couple minutes, but syncing will continue in the background while Sean works on his blog post about his daughter.

This really is a fabulous app. I, like Sean, also blog photos and videos of my daughter and am thrilled with the discovery of PhotoSync.

Anyone else have any App for That suggestions for Sean? Let him — and all of us — know.

Having trouble finding what you need in the app store? Head on over to our App and Game Feature Forum and let us know what you’re looking for. The TiPb community will do our best to find you just the right App for That!

I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m not the best person to call if you happen to be bleeding and need help. I tend to succumb to gravity pretty quickly, which has also prevented me from being a generous donor. But I know I’m not alone, and in a continuing effort to find a reliable source for blood that doesn’t require sticking people with needles, researchers at Edinburgh University have developed a new type of faux blood that could be ready for human testing in as little as two years. It’s the problem that won’t go away for LightSquared, and one that has prompted a number of different “fixes” and “solutions.” The latest, as announced by the LTE wholesaler last month, is an actual hardware fix that overcomes the interference issue affecting high-precision GPS units — the only problem being that all existing and future units will need to be upgraded with said fix. Now the company’s back with yet more details, announcing that it’s partnered with PCTEL to develop an antenna that lets users of high-precision GPS units easily retrofit their devices to make them “LightSquared-compatible.” There’s still no word on the cost for it, but LightSquared has also announced that Partron America has created a filtering component that costs $6. The company’s press release is after the break.

Apple acquires 3D mapping company, 3C Technologies?

According to Mark Gurman over at 9to5Mac, Apple has acquired a third mapping company, this time 3D specialists C3 Technologies.

Sources say that C3 Technologies CEO Mattias Astrom , C3 Technologies CFO Kjell Cederstrand, and lead C3 Technologies Product Manager Ludvig Emgard are now working within Apple’s iOS division. The leading trio, along with most of the former C3 Technologies team, is still working as a team in Sweden (interestingly, the division is now called “Sputnik”), where the C3 Technologies company was located prior to the Apple acquisition.

They specialize in making 3D maps from photo data using declassified missile-targeting technology. Apple previously bought map data companies PlaceBase and Poly9, and while they still rely on Google for the actual maps in OS X and iOS, it’s not hard to imagine some fantastic new Map app just may be in our future.

Here’s a video showing how C3 works.

Every year laser pointers get brighter and cheaper, and every year the number of incidents involving some bozo shining one at an aircraft increases. In 2005 there were just 283 reports, but that number has increased every year, hitting an astonishing 2,836 in 2010. So the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has set up a website to make it easier for pilots, and those on the ground, to report when it happens. More »

Nokia had something to prove at its annual event, and an eight-month turnaround of its smartphone arm is certainly nothing to be sniffed at. While Nokia’s first Windows Phone devices were undoubtably the stars of the two-day expo, there was plenty more to investigate — Nokia’s legion of development labs certainly didn’t let us down. Check out a veritable world of coverage neatly arranged below the break for everything Nokia World had to show us, and few more tidbits we found for ourselves.

Researchers Turn iPhone Into Microscope at $30 Only

Well, we’ve seen our iPhones and iPads become almost everything. From DSLR to Joystick-supported gaming console to Over-the-Air Digital TV and from Blood Pressure and ECG machine to a Computer Shutdown Remote -  you name it! This time, it’s iPhone’s turn to mold itself into a microscope and spectrometer, at the hands of medical researchers.

This microscope-cum-spectrometer leap-forward is a solid endeavor taken by researchers at the University of California Davis, at Sacramento, California, United States of America. Under the supervision of Sebastian Wachsmann-Hogiu, the team of researchers has embedded a 1mm-diameter (0.003 feet) ball lens into a tiny slip of rubber. This tiny piece of rubber was placed over the lens of an iPhone, knowing that the camera supports 5x magnification zoom. 5x zoom was enough to study out the diseased blood cells, since the pixels squashed onto the camera’s tiny sensor are so little that the resolution of objects of mere 1.5 microns in size turned out to be an easy possibility.

Microscope for iPhone - How it Works

Here’s an excerpt from the research piece that talks in detail about the task carried out:

…two attachments to a commercial cell phone that transform the phone’s integrated lens and image sensor into a 350× microscope and visible-light spectrometer. The microscope is capable of transmission and polarized microscopy modes and is shown to have 1.5 micron resolution and a usable field-of-view of 150×150  with no image processing, and approximately 350×350  when post-processing is applied. The spectrometer has a 300 nm bandwidth with a limiting spectral resolution of close to 5 nm. We show applications of the devices to medically relevant problems. In the case of the microscope, we image both stained and unstained blood-smears showing the ability to acquire images of similar quality to commercial microscope platforms, thus allowing diagnosis of clinical pathologies. With the spectrometer we demonstrate acquisition of a white-light transmission spectrum through diffuse tissue as well as the acquisition of a fluorescence spectrum. We also envision the devices to have immediate relevance in the educational field.

If you’ve been using a microscope more often, you might not find the result of this mod to be as perfect as what a professional microscope can do, but with just $30 spent, this is a job well done – just as good enough to seek out major diseases such as sickle-cell anemia, iron deficiencies etc from blood cells by doctors.

iPhone Microscope - Sample Photo

In countries where facilities for medical research are scarce, this could turn out to be a major breakthrough, if thought-about the positive possibilities.

Nintendo’s latest earnings report may be a litany of woe, but at least the outfit’s semi-annual financial results briefing bore good news: the 3DS eShop is about to get a kick in the pants. Today’s 3DS store gets the job done, but it’s hampered by disorganized categories, limited accessibility, and poor download management. Want something better? It’s on the way — a late November update is slated to bring “sleep mode” background downloading to the fledgling console, and opens the door for publishers to release in-game premium DLC and “limited-play” demos. Nintendo is even taking steps to address the handheld’s lousy shopping experience, announcing a companion website where users will be able to browse the eShop from a PC or smartphone. Eventually 3DS owners will be able to buy content directly from the eShop website, but at launch shoppers will need to scan a QR code with the handheld to make a purchase. It’s not a perfect plan, but at least it’s a start. Baby steps Nintendo, baby steps.

Nintendo’s eShop plans: premium DLC, game demos, smartphone shopping, relevancy originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 28 Oct 2011 19:02:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Lookee here, it’s the other new Windows Phone-packing Nokia handset. No, not that one, this is the Lumia 710 — you know, the budget phone with the 3.7-inch LCD and those colorful backplates. The Mangoriffic phone appears to have made its way through the FCC, with the ID on the filing matching up with listings on the Finnish phonemaker’s site. Don’t get too excited, however — while this and the product page are certainly enough to get some stateside Nokia fanatics’ blood pumping, the company has given us word that the Lumia is not destined for our shores, sadly — at least not in any official capacity.

Update: We just received word from Nokia that, contrary to earlier information, Lumia devices will in fact be arriving in the States. As far as what those specific products will be, however, the company isn’t quite ready to talk just yet.

Did the Nokia Lumia 710 pass through the FCC? originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 28 Oct 2011 15:41:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Looks like the tablet that wouldn’t die is finally dead — well, kind of sort, for now. HP sent out a note to let the world know that it’s “officially out of stock” of the zombie TouchPad. It’s not all bad news, however — apparently you can still pick one up at Best Buy, so long as you buy an HP computer at the same time. Mourn another quasi-death for the webOS slate with Boyz II Men after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Mobile Nations No Tricks, Just Treats Halloween Costume Contest!

Halloween Costume Contest: Email us a photo of you in costume with phone or tablet in hand and you could win!

With Halloween falling on a Monday this year, we know a lot of you will be out this weekend in costume getting your party on. So to celebrate Halloween and the official launch of our new Mobile Nations network branding, we thought we’d have some fun with a cross-site mobile device + costume contest!

What You Need to Do

When you’re out at Halloween parties this weekend or out trick or treating on Monday, get a photo snapped of you in costume holding your smartphone and/or tablet visibly out in hand. Be scary, funny or do a crazy pose. Whatever you want is cool. Have fun with it. For brownie points, load up TiPb in the web browser or throw a TiPb.com wallpaper on. Group photos with friends and co-workers are welcome too. And hey, if you have a mix of phones in the group photo and want to go for extra-awesomeness, you can load up the appropriate Mobile Nations website onto each different type of phone: TiPb.com on iPhones/iPads; AndroidCentral.com on Android devices; PreCentral.net on webOS devices; WPCentral.com on Windows Phone.

Submit Your Photo

With your photo taken, all you need to do is email it in to halloween@mobilenations.com by midnight PST this Monday, October 31st.

How and What You’ll Win

On the morning of November 1st we’ll go through all the photos and pick out a bunch of winners in a variety of categories – scariest costume, funniest costume, sexiest costume, best group photo and more! We’ll put all the winners and other photos received into a video collage and post it up on the blogs Tuesday afternoon.

As for the prizes? Well… it’s Halloween – which means you might get a treat, or this could all be just a nasty trick. But you know us… we like treats. We’re going to keep the treates a surprise though, so take your photo this Halloween, email it in, and stay tuned.

From all of us at Mobile Nations, have a safe and happy Halloween!!

For what seems like an eternity, Download Squad readers have reacted to news of security exploits targeting Adobe Reader with a common sentiment: why doesn’t Microsoft build its own secure PDF reader into Windows? Apparently the Windows 8 team agrees, and they’re working away at an application called Modern Reader which is exactly that.

From the handful of screenshots Paul Thurrott has shared, it’s clear that Modern Reader has been built with Metro in mind. You can see the Reader back button in the top-left corner of the yellow image and the minimal page navigation bar on the right. We’ve posted some larger images we managed to scrape from Google’s cache after the break.

Thurrott also mentions that Modern Reader is the first program spotted which is built using AppX — a packaging technology that may allow developers to roll a single build to both Windows 8 desktops and Windows Phone 8 mobile devices.

Ask a NomadTill date, I’ve travelled to 15 countries across 4 continents. Being a travel addict, I make it a point to travel to at least one new destination every year. Though I strongly believe that Lonely Planet is the best travel app for the iPad, it falls short when I’m looking for some quick answers to my travel questions. I’ve often wished for a travel genie app which could answer all my questions and ‘Ask a Nomad‘ iPad app fits the bill nicely.

Developed by WorldNomads.com, a global travel services company, the ‘Ask a Nomad’ app provides valuable travel information, answers to Frequently Asked Questions and local assistance from other like-minded travelers around the world. The idea is to leverage the wealth of information present on several Travel Knowledge Network sites and combine it with geo location to find content nearby. It’s like a Quora dedicated to your travel questions.

The first step is to create an account on WorldNomads.com – this can be done through the website or directly from the iPad app.

First things first, I love apps with unconventional yet attractive user interfaces and there’s no doubt that ‘Ask a Nomad’ belongs to that elusive category.

The app is hierarchically organized into several regions. You can choose a region and then drill down to a specific country and city that you want to lookup. Questions and answers are neatly organized in an easy to use manner. You can browse existing questions and answers about a specific location or ask questions.

Users can ask a question by tapping the big blue button on the bottom left side of the screen. Enter the subject, location, description and hit the ‘Ask’ button. You can also answer questions asked by other users by tapping the orange “Add Your Answer” button and typing in your answer.

It’s possible to add a question as your favorite by tapping the star next to it. You can also search all the questions by keywords.

All in all, the app is easy to use courtesy its intuitive user interface. In addition to the iPad app, users can also get answers to their travel questions from the Ask a Nomad web application. Here’s a video of the ‘Ask a Nomad‘ app in action.

Dolphin Browser responds to allegations of data mining

Dolphin Browser

Several days ago we (and likely many others) were contacted about a potentially serious security issue with Dolphin Browser.  Apparently, quite a bit of information about your browsing session, including URL data for secure websites and search strings, was being forwarded to a remote server — http://en.mywebzines.com.  We tore things apart and verified it, sure enough, it was happening and we were concerned.  Today the folks at Dolphin Browser have responded:

With roughly 300 Webzines supported at the moment, it was necessary for the client to check the current user URL against a database housing these 300 Webzine columns…None of these URLs have ever been stored by Dolphin, instead being used to cross-index if a Webzine for the current site exists. If it does, the current site is immediately converted to Webzine format; if not, it remains the standard mobile site. Again, none of this process is stored on the backend of our servers and we are deeply sorry that this was not made clear to our users from the beginning.

While the security nerd inside of us still cringes a bit at this, it's a perfectly reasonable explanation.  It's also the best way to handle the situation — Webzine is pretty cool, and we don't want to have to maintain that database of 300 supported sites on our devices.  This should have been presented to the user before using the Webzine feature, but Dolphin Browser isn't evil.  We're glad they took the time to explain the whole mess, and now we can go back to using it.  Read the concerns, and Dolphin's entire response at the source links.

Since the introduction of the first ipad different individuals and third party companies have come up with different methods of enhancing the overall usage of the ipad interesting, fun and educational. The introduction of ipad applications aka ipad apps, have taken the look and feel of using the ipad to a whole new level. Different types of these apps can be found on many online sites and even at the official online apple company store.

There are multiple ways in which you can also create your own ipad app without any programming or coding skills, there are software’s that can allow you to create any type of ipad application that you want. Many individuals have made this a business as they develop these apps and sell them on itunes. To be able to fully enjoy using your ipad it is highly recommend you download different types of ipad applications to your ipad.

To be able to do this you are going to need itunes, if you decide to load the applications straight to your ipad, it is vital you use the itunes that comes installed on your ipad, but if you choose a different route, downloading and installing itunes can also be an easy way to load ipad apps through your pc. Itunes in a nut shell is a transfer protocol through which different apple company products can download and install certain programs with ease. Most Mac devices comes with itunes already installed while windows operated computers will require the download of itunes and installing it to be able to transfer files to and fro the ipad.

Some ipad apps are very useful while others are just for cosmetic value that is they offer no real purpose and are made for entertainment purpose; this is evident in apps such as finger print scanner apps and many others. However there are many useful ones that are both educational and entertaining, this includes ipad apps such as the piano apps that I have found very useful in learning how to play. It is a task that requires dedication and time to sieve through a lot of junk ipad apps found on itunes and get the real ones that are both useful and entertaining. With regard to the last statement, different individuals have different types of ipad apps that they will like to have, many download ipad apps for different purposes.

When buying new ipad tablet pc, the first thing you will notice after switching the device on is that it comes almost empty with few apps preinstalled. Once you have charged your ipad, it is very important that you head over to itunes and download any type of ipad you want to spice up your ipad.

After finishing downloading and installing your favorite ipad apps, you can rearrange them the way you like. There is a documented guide that you can follow to help you get started on how you can rearrange your ipad apps to your liking.

Despite its heavy price tag and its buggy look, the ipad has become a favorite for many tablet pc buyers as its convenient and has the same functionality as a normal sized laptop computer or a computer.

Ooyala Backlot Web-8Netflix is not only in the movie business, it is also turning into this year?s biggest corporate horror story. Having increased its price by 60% earlier this summer, Netflix has lost 800,000 customers and $12 billion in 90 days – including $2.3 billion in one day earlier this week. So should we feel sorry for founder and CEO Reed Hastings, whose has gone from Silicon Valley hero to corporate goat in just a nightmarish three months? No, we shouldn?t. According to John Tschohl, the so-called ?guru of customer service?, Hastings deserves all the ridicule and criticism that he is now getting.

Google+ Tip: How to change who can message you

Google+

Google+ is great for so many things, but one thing that can become annoying is if anyone who circles you has the option to send you a message. That is, unless you change your preferences. So, let's take a quick look at how you can limit those messages down from just anyone to your circles or extended circles.

  1. Launch the Google+ Android App
  2. Press menu then go to Settings
  3. Scroll to Who Can Message You
  4. Select from Anyone, Your Circles or Extended Circles
  5. Click the back button to save your settings

Just like this you are able to change your Google+ preferences so that not just anyone can message you, and only people that you have chosen to circle back can send you messages. While some will enjoy the ability to interact with just about everyone, not everyone wants that so luckily for us the option is available to monitor who can message you.

Oh, and you are following all your favorite Android Central team members on Google+, right?

We’ve already inspected every inch of Samsung’s big bad phone-tablet hybrid, but a soupçon of extra news has trickled out from the Galaxy Note’s bombastic launch event in London yesterday. Those looking for brighter color scheme to match the striking glow of its HD Super AMOLED display are in luck, as the Galaxy Note looks set to arrive in white; the ethereal ying to its companion’s midnight blue yang. Sammy added that the Galaxy Note’s S-Pen SDK will be available to third-party developers starting December, hopefully bringing more uses for that slide-out stick. And that’s despite the latest Android OS offering native stylus support — the Galaxy Note remains a Gingerbread affair. The current smartphone king was unable to confirm if the UK would be getting the white model on the November 3rd launch day, or ever. Similarly, we’re still waiting on Samsung to put S-Pen to paper on pricing and any possible US launch details.

White Galaxy Note appears, developers wanted to pen third-party apps for its stylus originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 28 Oct 2011 13:21:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

While everyone was in a tizzy about Amazon’s $199 Kindle Fire price point, the Indian government was busily working to help bring out the $35 Aakash Android tablet. The tablet was developed with similarly good intentions as OLPC’s XO laptop before it — an attempt to get low-cost computing devices into the hands of students. One of the tablets landed in the VentureBeat offices this week. The site spent some hands-on time with the Froyo slate, and mostly liked what it saw, noting that seeming compromises made for price and a speedy release date ultimately benefit the whole of the device. The tablet will start hitting India next month, at the $35 government-subsidized pricepoint (actual retail price is a still mega-cheap $60).

Is Big Red gearing up for a tag team Moto tablet refresh? From the looks of this internal screen grab (and the oodles of pre-release leaks), that may very well be the case. Despite the lack of official confirmation from both parties, we’re pretty certain those two mystery model numbers shown above — MZ617 and MZ609 — belong to the oft in-the-wild spotted Xoom 2 and its 8.2-inch “Media Edition” sibling. Unfortunately, that listed October 23rd date has come and gone with nary a mention of the slates’ existence, so we’ll just have to content ourselves with evidence of their apparent 4G capabilities and storage configurations. Folks keen to snag the full-fledged 10.1-incher will purportedly be able to select from 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models, whereas lil’ bro Fleming offers up 16GB and 32GB options. With Google’s Motorola acquisition looming overhead, these could be your go-to tabs for an unadulterated Ice Cream Sandwich experience. And, hey, at least they’ll ship with LTE this time.

Mystery Motorola devices headed for Verizon, could be the long-awaited Xoom 2s? originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 28 Oct 2011 08:33:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Apple Lossless Audio Codec -- now under the Apache license

Apple has released their lossless audio codec under the Apache license.

The Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) is an audio codec developed by Apple and supported on iPhone, iPad, most iPods, Mac and iTunes. ALAC is a data compression method which reduces the size of audio files with no loss of information. A decoded ALAC stream is bit-for-bit identical to the original uncompressed audio file.

The Apple Lossless Audio Codec project contains the sources for the ALAC encoder and decoder. Also included is an example command line utility, called alacconvert, to read and write audio data to/from Core Audio Format (CAF) and WAVE files. A description of a ‘magic cookie’ for use with files based on the ISO base media file format (e.g. MP4 and M4A) is included as well.

Any golden eared FOSS-advocates out there going to switch from FLAC?

windows 8 welcome screen

It’s not really a secret the Microsoft had planned on bringing bits of Windows Phone 7′s Metro UI to Windows 8, but we haven’t seen a lot of really telling evidence. However, with the Windows 8 milestone 3 build now available to Microsoft Connect partners, it was really just a matter of time before we started to get a peek.

Thanks to Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott, we’ve now had a glimpse at what the Windows 8 welcome screen will look like. As you can see, the typography is very Metro indeed. Within Windows also mentions that the background image is customizable, and we’re wondering if it might not pull from your current Windows 8 theme. This particular shot shows the CTRL + ALT + DELETE login option, but we imagine you’ll still be able to log in by clicking your account picture tile as well.

Rivera and Thurrott also mention that the tablet version of the welcome screen will allow you to log in by swiping a pattern on the screen — as you can on current Android devices.

More Siri-powered Apple television set rumors

Nick Bilton of The New York Times has some quasi-informed speculation on the latest, greatest unicorn chase, a potentially Siri powered Apple television set in the future.

Several people, all speaking on condition of anonymity for obvious reasons, told me that nothing was actively being built, but — and this was a big but — I was told repeatedly that Apple would eventually make a television. “Absolutely, it is a guaranteed product for Apple,” I was told by one individual. “Steve thinks the industry is totally broken.”

He also thinks Siri is the interface crack Steve Jobs referred to in his biography. So there you have it. Nothing new, but with the NYT stamp on it.

Tablets Electronic devices have changed in last couple years with the introduction of advanced electronic tangible goods. In the past the most common type of electronic communication was the use of a telephone, though still used to day and fax, also still in use today. Over the years electronic products companies introduced certain products that are very advanced, this includes tablet pc. Tablet pc’s are touch screen computers that are used for multiple things such as email and all forms of electronic communication.
What is a tablet Pc In a nut shell a tablet pc is an over sized touch screen cell phone with a massive touch screen. The tablet pc is a type of computer that has no physical keyboard and everything is done by touch screen. The most popular and well known tablet pc is the ipad. The ipad resembles an over sized iphone and has similar icons pre-installed.

The first production of tablet pc was made by Microsoft in the last 20 years, the tablet pc that was made by Microsoft and was buggy and had a lot of operative issues. Microsoft attempted to enhance and remove all the issues that users of its tablet pc were experiencing, but this further led to the tablet pc not becoming as popular as Microsoft had hoped. Over the years a new company called Apple Company came up with the best solution to the tablet pc by introducing its own tablet pc called the ipad. This has become one of the best and most loved tablet pc, due to the fact it is user friendly and can be personalized to reflect your personal theme. What really has made this tablet pc a success is because of the advanced technology used and the way in which a user can do anything with it.

Since the success of the first ipad, many companies have also introduced there own versions of tablet pc’s. The dell streak is also one of the most trending tablet pc around the online communities. However the dell streak will never be as successful as the ipad. There are many types of tablet pc’s and most of them have not become popular or even had any success resulting in company’s not producing them anymore.

Uses Of Tablet Pc
There are many uses of tablet pc’s but the most common one been that tablet pc’s are commonly used for typing reading eBooks, watching movies and even making calls. Tablet pc’s are convenient to carry as they offer the same usability as a normal computer but a lighter and easy to carry. This has made people to carry their ipads around for convenience, instead of a normal laptop computer.

Price Tag
It goes without saying that tablet pc’s are very expensive, except the cheap imitation from china. A tablet pc can cost as much as twice the price of a computer. However this has not deterred people from buying this type of communication devices. Some buy tablet pc for gaming while others buy them for ‘showing off’.

Paul Otellini

It's 50-50 on this one, we suppose, but Intel CEO Paul Otellini will be giving a keynote address on the first afternoon of CES on January 10 in Las Vegas. And it's entirely possible that we'll see some new Android hardware come out of it. You'll recall that Google's Andy Rubin joined Otellini at Intel's developer conference last month to announce that "Combining Android with Intel's low power smartphone roadmap opens up more opportunity for innovation and choice." And that goes from the kernel on up.

Needless to say, this won't be a CES to miss, and we'll be there to bring you the whole thing.

Sony buying out Ericsson’s share of Sony Ericsson

Sony Ericsson

We've seen this coming for a few weeks now, and today it was announced that after 10 years together and some €1.5 billion in profits, Sony its indeed buying out the Ericsson share in Sony Ericsson

Ericsson confirmed the buyout this morning and will receive a payday of €1.05 billion in return for its half of the partnership. The deal also sees sony receive an IP cross-licensing agreement as well as "five essential patent families."

Why, you ask?

The transaction gives Sony an opportunity to rapidly integrate smartphones into its broad array of network-connected consumer electronics devices – including tablets, televisions and personal computers – for the benefit of consumers and the growth of its business. The transaction also provides Sony with a broad intellectual property (IP) cross-licensing agreement covering all products and services of Sony as well as ownership of five essential patent families relating to wireless handset technology.

William and KateTo celebrate the imminent marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Royal Collection will release an Android an iOS app that chronicles the last seven royal marriages, including Queen Victoria’s marriage to Prince Albert in 1840.

Ironically, the app won’t actually feature anything to do with William and Kate’s marriage — rather, it will focus on the “tradition, splendor and romance” that are intrinsic to British royal marriages. “[The app] will share the stories of past royal weddings and offer a wealth of historical context for the ceremony on April 29.”

Unfortunately, the app, which has been lumbered with the fantastically creative name of ‘Royal App,’ won’t be available until April 18 — just 11 days before Kate’s big day. It won’t be free, either: it’ll cost the rather princely sum of £1.79, or three of your Tea Party-loving dollars. The money will go to the Royal Collection, though, which is a good cause!

farragomate

You know those fridge magnet kits composed of a whole bunch of words? The ones you put all over your fridge door and then try to arrange into all sorts of juvenile and/or amusing sentences. Well, Farragomate is the social, webby version of that very same pastime.

You get to play with a bunch of random strangers in real-time, and make up sentences out of a pre-set collection of words, including some fairly naughty ones, and all players’ nicknames. As you can imagine, some of the results are not child-friendly.

There are ten rounds to a game. Once a round is done, players get to vote for their favorite sentence from that round. You can’t vote for your own creation, of course. There’s in-game chat, too.

I think the vocabulary could be made a bit more eclectic, but even as it is, it’s a nice way to spend a few minutes and meet random strangers on the Internet (always a thrilling experience).

Calendagram for iPhoneEver wondered of sending your friends and loved ones a collection of the memories you shared together? That indeed is a brilliant idea and thanks to Calendagram, this is now possible. The Calendagram application allows Apple users to turn their memories into a wall calendar. They can select 12 photos each for a month and customize them according to their wish.

Calendagram connects its users to Instagram from where they can select their photos and give it the shape of a physical calendar. Instagram is an application that allows its user to take pictures, filter them and upload them on social networks for free. The application runs on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch and iOS devices 3.1.2 or above.

The application is free, however it costs $24.99 in the making of a Calendagram. Though a little pricey, the Calendagram calendar can make up for a thoughtful gift for the coming holidays.

Calendagram for iPad

Creating a Calendagram requires one to get inside their photos through an Instagram account and choose from their own photos. This is a bit unfortunate for users that they cannot access their friend’s photos for making a calendagram. Though, in the future the company can get permission regarding access to tap into friend’s photos for this purpose.

Once the photos have been selected the user can start arranging them in an order from January to December by numbering the pictures. There is also the option of choosing the color as there are three available, white black and brown. The Calendagram application gives the option of previewing the wall calendar before clicking on the purchase button. If one purchases a single calendar it costs them $24.99 excluding the cost of shipping that will later be added to the bill. However, if one orders in bulk it costs less, as the number of orders increases, the cost decreases. On ordering ten Calendagrams or more the price will drop to $19.99 dollars plus shipping.

The printing is what results in higher costs of the Calendagram, though as an investment for the whole year of memories, it is worth it.

Verizon’s exclusive Galaxy Nexus exclusive no more?

Android Central

Seriously, this is the last time we're going to write about this Verizon-Galaxy Nexus exclusivity thing. But it's worth noting that Verizon's removed the "Exclusively from Verizon" line from its little banner image, which really only means that something that wasn't actually exclusive in the first place apparently still isn't exclusive. Make sense? No? Fine. Read this again.

-Ed]

    dodge

Space-shooters are usually a fairly fiery affair, with many types of guns, weapon upgrades, power-ups and more. Dodge does away with all of that, while keeping the very essence of a space shooter: Dark background, fast action, and stuff blowing up all over the place.

Your vector-looking spacecraft is the fastest thing on the screen, most of the time. And as the header implies, you have absolutely no weapons; you can’t get any, either. All you have is agility and maneuverability.

Your opponents shoot heat-seeking missiles at you; the missiles lock on and start tracking you. The trick is to dodge the missiles while putting them in the path of one of your enemies, thus letting them have a taste of their own medicine.

There are three types of enemies, at least in the first few levels: “simple” spaceships which fire slow projectiles, “tanks” which seem to be more serious and take more hits to destroy, and “circles.” The circles simply explode, spewing twenty or thirty very fast projectiles. This sounds dangerous, but is actually great once you learn to use them; they are very destructive for tanks, and can even blow up other circles.

The soundtrack is very techno, but it meshes very well with this type of game. Intense fun!

Android Game Mini Review: Word Farm

    Word Farm

Word games are always a great way to pass some time along while getting to stimulate your brain a bit in the process. Word Farm is a great free application available in the Android market that allows you to spend countless hours connecting letters to form words. The concept of the game is quite simple, connect the letters on the board to form as many words as possible in the minute time frame that is given.

The first few games are quite tough, it is a great challenge to connect the letters and form words, and submit them all while keeping your eye off the timer. After getting the hang of a few games I was moving through them much quicker, the score continued to rise and rise, and before I knew it a whole hour had passed. The game offers in app purchases which allow you to buy various power-ups and other items to help your score rise, and allow you to beat some of your friends in score.

For the ever so lovely price of free, there is really no reason to skip out on downloading this game and giving it a shot. So, get to downloading, and be sure to let us know your scores! Hit the break for a few more screen shots and the download links.

Maingear and Origin PC have both announced this week that their high-end gaming desktops are now available with Intel’s Core i7 2700K — a beast of a processor that’s clocked from the factory at 3.5GHz. Maingear’s shoving this guy into its SHIFT (starting at $1,985) and F131 (starting at $1,228) rigs, with factory overclocking options pushing it beyond 5GHz. Origin is hawking its Genesis desktop with a factory speed of 5.2GHz, and yes, gratis warranties are thrown in for the paranoid. Hit the links below to give your wallet the dent it’s been asking for.

Amazon Android Cloud Player appIt’s hard to believe: our world-spanning network, our Internet, which is the cornerstone of free speech and free society — which, on a good day, is capable of causing populist revolutions – is still crippled by banal geolocation restrictions. We are, of course, talking about Amazon’s two latest offerings, both of which are only available in the United States. Last week it was the excellent Android Appstore for Android, and today it’s the Amazon Cloud Player for Web and Android.

Along with Cloud Player, Amazon also launched Cloud Drive, which is basically just like any other cloud storage digital locker. It’s not particularly feature rich, and there’s no real reason to use it over something like SugarSync or SkyDrive — it does work outside the US, however.

Its primary purpose, as far as we’re concerned, is that it stores your your Cloud Player music in a subdirectory. You get 5GB of Cloud Drive storage for free, and then it’s $1 per gigabyte per year if you need more space.

The Amazon Cloud Player itself will not, to put it bluntly, blow your mind. It works, but it’s very much an early, and possibly rushed, release. Let’s dive in to the Web and Android players for a closer look.

ravn-logoIn November of last year, i/o Ventures-backed Skyara launched a platform that was essentially the Airbnb for experiences, as it allowed those who are in the position to offer cool experiences like a culinary tour, beer tasting, or personalized yoga to hook up with those who want to try them. Skyara was the platform that would connect the providers with the fun-seekers. Since then, founders Jonathan Wu, Dennis Liu and Steven Ou have been working quietly on the platform, adding, iterating, and tweaking. As is often the case, the development process led to an early pivot, and the team is officially transitioning Skyara into a new product, called RAVN — which launches in private beta today. (Invites below.) Unfortunately for early Skyara users, the team will be either shutting down or redirecting Skyara in the near future.

windows 8Select Microsoft Connect partners — major players like HP — have been given their first taste of Windows 8. According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven’t been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore — which is being referred to as History Vault — has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We’ve also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It’s believed that you’ll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that’s left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.
