Who said there’s no such thing as a second chance? After resurrecting the RAZR brand just last week with Motorola’s newly minted Droid member, Verizon’s now gearing up for a pre-order deluge on the 27th. That’s right, starting tomorrow morning at 8AM EST, Big Red’s dual-core 4G LTE handset’ll ship out to eager subs who plunk down the $299 on contract price before November 10th. If you’re not the early bird type, you’ll have to sit tight a wee bit longer as plans for an in-store launch have yet to be announced. Of course, you could always hold out for that eventual Galaxy Nexus to make its first place carrier debut, or even cross your toes for a Nokia Lumia 800 (one can hope, right?). Whatever your preference, this holiday season’s sure turning out to be a cornucopia of high-end mobile options. Check out the official presser after the break.

Update: Droid Life got a hold of an internal Verizon screen that pegs the Droid RAZR’s off contract price at $650. Still no word on an actual retail date for the device, but we’re sure that’s right around the corner.

Asus Transformer Prime shows itself, we all gaze at it’s beauty

Android Central

We're getting closer and closer to the official announcement of the Asus Transformer Prime, but if you really, really can't wait then take a look at these leaked shots of the quad-core super tablet.

Bearing passing resemblance to a Macbook Pro, the images have been pulled from the Chinese site that originally leaked them. They go on to show various angles of the Prime, but the lockscreen is the only part of the software on show and it doesn't give any glimpses of any Ice Cream Sandwich goodness I'm afraid.

Coming from the success of the original Transformer, a lot of you are sure to want one of these. Check out some more images after the jump to whet your appetite just a little more.

Singapore will soon have its iPhone 4S dream realized as it is one of the chosen 22 countries, which will have the most awaited smartphone launched on the 28th of October, 2011. And bringing it up on a 2 year-contract is the pioneering carrier company M1 Limited.

iPhone 4S will be available in Singapore starting at $505 for the 16GB model, $630 for the 32GB model and $770 for the 64GB model. And with M1 patronizing the services with its advanced mobile network, customers can not only expect faster download speeds of up to 14.4Mbps, but also M1’s indomitable iPhone tariff plans subscriptions.

You may choose from a range of four iPhone tariff plans with a 2-year contract, which will vary according to the price plan signed and is stated to start off with a affordable and competitive pricing of S$36. Apart from that, all those who are looking at the 16GB version, prices will start from S$0 for the high-tier plans at $98/month and S$198/month. Again, you may opt for the price of S$505 and S$235 tagged to the new iPhone with a S$36/month or S$56/month plan respectively.

Although there aren’t much changes in tariff since the iPhone 4 launch the last year, the data bundle has been reflected to support download speeds of 14.4Mbps according to the iPhone 4S and its new HSDPA speeds. However, it is important for you to note that the download speeds are dependent on your location and is applicable only to new subscribers and renewed contracts.

Are you ready for the Big Launch?

M1 will celebrate the iPhone 4S launch at midnight on Oct 28 at midnight at its Paragon flagship store. However, customers may also obtain the iPhone 4S from 7am the same day at M1 retail shops at Bugis Junction, Change Alley, IMM, Tampines, Plaza Singapura and Westmall, as well as at selected exclusive dealer shops at Ang Mo Kio Hub, Sun Plaza, Jurong Point and Toa Payoh Blk 190.

And if you are not interested in stand in the queue, you may comfortably place your order online at m1shop.com.sg with just the click of a mouse. Are you all set to own the iPhone 4S; what is it that makes you want to own one soon?

Aaron Sorkin being courted for Steve Jobs biography, the movie?

Aaron Sorkin, responsible for everything from The West Wing TV series to The Social Network, is rumored to be somehow, someway, in consideration or talks — basically being courted by Sony — to write the movie version of the just-released Steve Jobs biography.

Sorkin is one of the smartest screen writers in recent times, with a pitch-perfect ear for dramatic dialog. He made the relatively boring subject of Facebook into a highly engaging movie (as opposed to terrible writing, which made a lot of fantastic looking movies painful to endure) and could likely inject similar sizzle in the Steve Jobs movie.

Let’s hope they make this deal and get it done. Then all they have to do is cast Steve Jobs. What do you think, TiPb nation, Noah Wyle again?

It’s still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple’s mobile platform. And it’s even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple’s tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you’re searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as “touch and decide,” Bing Voice Search is also built in — making it easy to start a query without using the iPad’s on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

Today’s Amazon earnings were decidedly split — the company revealed both a 44-percent increase in net sales and a 73-percent decrease in net income. So, why the discrepancy? It may at least partially be due to the much discussed suggestion that the company actually loses money for each Kindle sold — a trend which, if true, has likely only been compounded by the release of the uber-cheap ad-supported version of the device. The company addressed the matter in part, suggesting that it is focused on “the lifetime value [of the Kindle], not just the economics of the devices and accessories.” The total economic picture of the Kindle includes the device itself, accessories, downloaded content and ad-revenue.

Things are apparently looking up for the company, as well, with Amazon anticipating “a record quarter in terms of device sales” for Q4. The positivity is a reflection, in part, of greater than anticipated Kindle pre-orders. Says CEO Jeff Bezos, “In the three weeks since launch, orders for electronic ink Kindles are double the previous launch. And based on what we’re seeing with Kindle Fire pre-orders, we’re increasing capacity and building millions more than we’d already planned.”

We’ve been having a jolly good time lambasting the United States federal government and, by extension, its various CIOs for Washington’s problems in cybersecurity implementation. It turns out now that the fault, dear readers, lies not with the CIOs but with the government itself. The U.S. General Accountability Office has found that CIOs don’t consistently have responsibility for 13 major areas of IT.

App Store Purchased OptionIn early June, Apple updated the iTunes App Store and introduced you the purchase history. You can make use of it for viewing all your purchased apps, as well as, re-downloading them. Quite a number of readers have raised the concern about privacy as they used to share the same Apple ID with their family members. One of the common questions is how you can remove the apps from the purchase history.

Along with the release of iOS 5, Apple has updated the iTunes App Store and allows you to hide any apps in your purchase history. There are two ways to hide the apps. You can either do it on iPhone (or iPad) or simply remove the apps using iTunes.

Hide Purchased Apps using iPhone

To hide a purchased app using iPhone, tap “App Store” and select the “Updates” tab. Tap “Purchased” to view your purchase history.

From here, pick any app you want to remove from the history. Swipe your finger from left to right on the selected app and tap the “Hide” button to remove the app.

Alternatively, you can hide the purchased apps on iTunes. First, go to the iTunes App Store. Under the Quick links section, select “Purchased”. You’ll be prompted to log-in with your iTunes account.

iTunes App Store Quick Link

Once you’re authenticated, iTunes shows you the history of all your purchased apps. As you move the mouse cursor over any of the app icons, you should notice a cross appeared at the corner of the icon. Just click on the cross to hide the app.

You can always unhide the apps and make them appear in the purchase history again. In iTunes, click on your account to access the account information. In the “iTunes in the Cloud” section, click “View Hidden Purchases”.

The IRIS 9000 is a little box with a built-in microphone that sits next to your iPhone 4S and lets you use Siri from across the room, HAL style.

Simply place your iPhone into the Iris 9000 cradle and use the included micro remote to trigger Siri up to 50 feet away. Just tap the Iris 9000 remote button once, listen for the Siri chime, and speak your command. The built in mic on the Iris 9000 picks up your voice from across the room and the embedded speaker amplifies Siri’s spoken responses.

In addition to fine Kubrick, 2001: A Space Odyssey good looks, you can use IRIS to make and receive phone calls with the built-in speakerphone, but the coolest part is the glowing LED eye that flickers when Siri talks to you.

The only problem I can see with this is if there’s anyone else in the room, or any noise going on to get in the way of IRIS picking up your voice. But then again, it can only be attributable to human error, right?

tarzanball

So, you’re a ball. A Tarzan Ball, to be precise. You’ve earned the nickname thanks to your astonishing ability to shoot out a lengthy ‘vine’ (I hope it’s a vine) at objects, and then pull yourself towards those objects.

That’s a handy ability to have, especially since you’ve got no legs, no arms, and no other means of transportation. In Tarzan Ball, the rope is everything. But you don’t just swing around the screen aimlessly – that wouldn’t be much of a game now, would it?

Instead, your goal in life is to collect “targets”. Each level has one of these “targets” hidden away somewhere on the screen, usually behind some kind of barrier. Once you navigate close enough to the target, you can shoot your rope at it and just reel it in. That’s when you pass the level.

You can’t die in this game, but it can still be very frustrating. It’s actually one of the tougher games I’ve posted recently. Still, if you enjoy physics games, this one is quite nicely made.

[This is actually the sequel to IQ Ball, which we covered last year! -Ed]

Motorola, on Twitter, says RAZR, Bionic and Xoom will get Ice Cream Sandwich within 6 weeks of code drop (Update: Or not)

Motorola

Update 2: And we've gotten further clarification directly from Moto, which now says it "will provide more precise guidance on timing within 6 weeks post public push of ICS by Google."

Update: And proving our point that Twitter isn't exactly the best way to go about something like this, Motorola has deleted any Tweet that references doing anything with a 6-week window.  Carry on.

Original: Let's explain (again) what's about to happen here: Motorola, on Twitter, responded to someone with the following:

We'll be releasing devices for ICS 6 weeks after Google releases the final version of it.

The Twitter account later clarified, saying the Droid RAZR, Bionic and Xoom "Will get ICS within 6 weeks of Google's public push," and they'll confirm other devices later on. We'll believe it when we see it. Dunno how many times we've had to say this, folks, but there's a reason carriers and manufacturers don't give precise windows for updates — and even vague time lines are often missed. (Never mind the fact that "official" information on Twitter and Facebook isn't always as official as you might think.) It was the same way with Froyo updates. It was the same with (and still is, unfortunately) with Gingerbread updates.

The point is this: We have no doubt that Motorola, HTC, LG, Samsung and every other manufacturer is hard at work at figuring out which devices can — and should — be upgraded. But if you start a six-week countdown from the instant the Ice Cream Sandwich code drops in AOSP, you're setting yourself up for a big bag of hurt, should things take a little longer than planned. That's not to say we're not hoping for speedy updates across the board. It's just that history has taught us different.

evernote web

Evernote, the popular multi-platform ‘digital memory’ app, has done some serious re-tooling of its Web interface. In addition to a more polished UI that more closely mirrors the look of Evernote on the desktop, the update brings features like notebook stacks and snippet view to the Web.

Auto-saving is now enabled as well, and you can select multiple items by holding down the Cmd or Ctrl key on your Mac or Windows keyboard. If you’ve got items stored in your notebooks that you want to share with friends or co-workers, Evernote has improved that process, too. You can quickly post an item to Facebook, share it via email, or generate a Web sharing link to paste into an IM conversation or status update.

Head over to the Evernote Web login page to try out the new interface.

Android Honeycomb

Google, in an interesting but not entirely unexpected twist, will not be open-sourcing Android 3.0 Honeycomb for the foreseeable future.

Historically, Android is usually open-sourced via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) a few days or weeks after the code is finalized. While this departure from the norm won’t affect OEMs like HTC and Motorola that have access to internal builds of Android, small-time developers will likely have to wait months before rolling their own distributions.

As to why Google is holding back Honeycomb, its reasons are actually rather rational. Honeycomb, while originally intended to run on all mobile form factors, is only ready for deployment on tablets. “To make our schedule to ship the tablet, we made some design tradeoffs,” says Andy Rubin, the head of Google’s Android group. “We didn’t want to think about what it would take for the same software to run on phones. It would have required a lot of additional resources and extended our schedule beyond what we thought was reasonable. So we took a shortcut.”

In other words, Google wants to prevent OEMs and homebrew developers like Cyanogen from rolling their own smartphone versions of Honeycomb — it doesn’t want to see the same bitter-tasting tabletified bastardization that occurred with Android 2.1 and 2.2 last year.

Viewsonic throws its hat into the sub-$200 tablet ring with the ViewPad 7e

Viewsonic ViewPad 7e

Viewsonic has announced the ViewPad 7e (check out our hands-on) — a Gingerbread running tablet that checks in just under $200.  With a 7-inch 800×600 screen, a 1GHz ARM A8 CPU, front and rear cameras (.3MP and 3MP respectively) and the ViewScene 3D interface on top of Android 2.3, this looks to be a player in the same market space as the Kindle Fire.  Much like the Fire, the ViewPad 7e comes preloaded with "Amazon Services" (we assume this means the Amazon Appstore and MP3 Store) and the Kindle application, as well as games from Wild Tangent, Twitter, and Tune-in Radio.  There is no mention of the Android Market or other Google services.

Unlike the Kindle Fire, the ViewPad 7e comes with 4GB on-board storage and a microSD card slot for use with cards up to 32GB, which will appeal to a whole lot of people who need or want their removable storage.  The ViewPad 7e will be available in North America at the end of October for $199.99, with Latin America to follow shortly after in November.

Things are looking pretty rosy for Canon these days, though there may be some difficulty on the horizon. Today, the camera maker published a rather strong Q3 earnings report, just a few months after posting relatively ho-hum Q2 results. According to the company, operating profit grew by 17.4 percent to ¥122.55 billion ($1.6 billion) this quarter, compared with ¥104.42 billion ($1.37 billion) a year ago. Net profit, meanwhile, increased by 14.2 percent over the year, reaching ¥77.9 billion ($1.02 billion) during the quarter, versus ¥68.20 billion during Q3 2010. These results come at a time when the yen is strong, and therefore detrimental to Japanese exporters, though Canon attributed much of its success to strong growth in emerging markets, including China and India. For the year, however, Canon lowered its net-profit outlook to ¥230 billion ($3.02 billion) from ¥260 billion ($3.4 billion), on assumptions that the yen will maintain its strength, and on fears that recent flooding in Thailand may impact production. In fact, the manufacturer said the flooding may cut annual sales by ¥50 billion ($657 million) and operating profit by ¥20 billion. Check out the full report, at the source link below.

To ensure we never miss a moment, it’s entirely plausible that one day cameras will just continuously record video, instead of snapping individual shots. But when all you want is a single photo, pouring through hundreds of frames in a clip for that perfect shot is overly tedious. So researchers have come up with a better approach to automatically analyzing videos and selecting only the best candid portraits. More »

    mitoza

While not a game per se, I found Mitoza intriguing enough to spend quite some time with it. You start off with a seed, and are then presented with two choices: you can either click a flower pot, or click a cute little birdie.

If you click the flower pot, a flower pot appears and the seed is planted inside. You’re then presented with two further choices — a water can or a bottle of fertilizer. Each choice you make causes your creation to morph, and presents you with two other choices.

There’s no winning or losing, really. Each “game” usually lasts around four or five choices, at which point the plant/animal dies in some creative (but not too gruesome) way. At this point you instantly start over with a new seed.

The graphics are captivating; the whole thing has a cinematic feel to it, with a bit of artificial camera shake added for style.

All in all, it’s a fun, peaceful way to spend a few minutes, and it might even make you think a little bit while you’re at it.

Android 101: Change how quickly your phone locks

    Android lock settings

Note: This example is from a phone with HTC Sense. Yours may vary.

So you want to use Android's built-in security — either the pattern, pin or password lock. Good for you. We highly recommend it. But maybe you don't want it to lock every time you hit the power button. (Can't blame you there.)

Go to Settings>Security>Lock phone after and you'll have options as for how much time you want to pass before you have to unlock the phone. If you're going to be picking it up every couple minutes, perhaps "Immediately" isn't the best choice. But even 15 minutes is better than no security, right?

This option isn't available on all phones, but HTC Sense does have it, as do some newer TouchWiz devices.

How to Optimize iCloud to Maximize Storage

When Steve Jobs in his June’11 WWDC speech introduced iCloud to a packed house of cheering Apple enthusiasts and media; anticipation of a technological marvel was sowed. The release of the iOS 5 recently brought to rest all speculations and buzz related to this amazing creation from Apple Inc. – The iCloud.

The new iOS 5 comes loaded with an online backup and syncing service iCloud, however, its allotted 5 GB space is considered by many to be too economical a space for geeks, without much storage space to spare. Thereby, the next option would be to maximize your back-up and storage space. So more the space, you can save and back-up all the apps, Contacts, messages, calendar events, and other important data stored on your iPhone to Apple’s remote servers rather than your local computer. And this is applicable for all your Apple devices like the iPad, iPod touch and the iMac.

Has it occurred to you that the iCloud in your iOS device has displayed a larger utilized space rather than remaining? There has been several reported instances where e.g 4.7GB space has been displayed as being utilized, which in actual you haven’t. It is only after you optimize the iCloud settings does the space display ‘4.7GB remaining’. Therefore, it is essential to optimize iCloud for your iPhone so as to completely utilize the free allotted space of 5GB.

Simple Steps to Optimize iCloud for iPhone

Step 1. Go to Settings and select iCloud, Settings > iCloud screen on your iOS device. You will come across some pre-installed Apple Apps. However, those are a handful, I’m sure you want to find many of them – in fact almost all of them.

Step 2. Scroll down to Storage & Backup, and tap it. There choose the third option – Manage Storage

Step 3. Here select the entry <name> for your iOS device under Backups.

Step 4. Meet the list of the top five storage-using apps here. Scroll down and click Show All; and then select app by app – the items you want to back up.

Step 5. You have the option to discard the apps you do not want to store or backup. So, all you need to do is toggle those to “off”, after which a tab reading “Turn Off & Delete” will appear. However, you can still access the app and its data on your device after clicking on it – because data deletion has so far taken place only from iCloud’s storage space.

Thereafter, you can see the remaining available space at the bottom of the screen. So the better you clean-up your app backup space, better will you be able to optimize the free 5GB space. But, all of you who aren’t interested in all the economics of limiting yourself to the 5GB mark; can indulge yourself with extra storage space starting $20/year for 10GB from Apple.

Have you optimized iCloud yet on your device? We’d love to hear from you.

    Hacked

Recently, I was given the (what I thought would be) amazing task of doing an Android adult app roundup.  I prepared myself with a pre-paid debit card, a clear mind, a 12-pack of Milwaukee's finest and a dark room — and went on a download spree.  What was supposed to be informative and fun turned out to be a $10 pain in the ass and time spent on the phone with T-Mobile trying to get things undone.

Repeat: Steve Jobs might have joked (or maybe he was serious) that the Android Phone is for Porn, but as we found out, that doesn't mean it's good porn.

This one's about as NSFW as can be, so be warned before you click through.

Fixing the Siri Security Flaw in iPhone 4S

Siri for iPhone 4sEvery good thing comes with its share of flaws. And Siri – the most popular feature in the iPhone 4S which has achieved unprecedented popularity in this short span of time, too couldn’t save itself from a default loophole.

Siri, the revolutionary voice-control system for the iPhone 4S, allows it to be controlled by voiced commands for making calls, setting reminders and sending text messages. Besides that it can engage you in chatting incessantly on varied topics to making online searches, etc. However, experts have recently discovered a prominent security flaw, which shows that Siri responds to commands even when the phone is password-locked i.e. Siri remain ‘on’ always by default.

    How big is the threat?

This is indeed a matter of concern considering the fact that any unauthorized person with physical access to the iPhone 4S can use Siri to send texts or emails to any  of your Contacts, as well as alter your reminders and calendar settings – all without your knowledge and without having to enter the passcode. However, fortunately the flaw doesn’t allow apps to be launched while the phone’s passcode is locked, and can only send messages to your Contacts.

    Fix the Siri Security Flaw

You can fix this flaw by just entering ‘Settings -> General ->Passcode Lock’, and ensure that the ‘Siri’ option is set to ‘Off’. This doesn’t turn Siri off altogether; however, it will not work any further when the phone is locked with a passcode. Analysts are blaming it on Apple Inc. for this irresponsible act of implementing Siri to a default mode, rather than ensuring iPhone 4S security.

However, record sales of over 4 million iPhone 4S over the first weekend speak for iPhones popularity and the security flaw crisis haven’t actually dampened the spirit of Apple iPhone enthusiasts all over the world. This further heightens the responsibility to salute people’s verdict and fix the errors and the loopholes with early minor setting changes.

Have you encountered this flaw yet? Send in your reactions to us.

BlackBerry’s Android App Player not all it’s cracked up to be?

    BlackBerry Android App Player

A big question we've had since RIM first announced that the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet would be able to run some Android applications was "Why?" Another question has been "Would a developer really want to?"

We're getting a little insight into that courtesy of pals at CrackBerry. The tl;dr version:

This seems to be a short term solution for a long term problem. For years RIM rested on their laurels doing very little to woo new developers or even keep their existing ones happy and it finally caught up with them and the Android solution seems to be more about getting some quick positive publicity rather than solving the real problem.

Sounds about right to us. Check out the whole piece at the link below.

Droid RAZR page now live at DroidDoes website

    Droid Razr Does

The Motorola Droid RAZR Does.  We know it does, because Verizon has added it to the DroidDoes website to get things ready for pre-sale and release.  The page reminds us of the RAZR's Gorilla Glass and Kevlar construction, it's 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, water repellent "nanocoating", slim 7.1mm profile and 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Advanced display, and leaves everyone a little bit more excited about seeing one in person — exactly what marketing should do.

Even though Verizon and Motorola have told us pretty much everything there is to know about the RAZR already, we still like seeing reminders that it's close — as in pre-orders in four days style close.  Check it out at the source link.

Android’s share of the tablet market grows to 27% in one year

    Tablet market share

Android has grown to capture 27 percent of the tablet market, that just one year ago was 100 percent filled by Apple.  With the launch of the original Galaxy Tab things have been on a slow uphill climb, but much like the smartphone space diversity and a much more open ecosystem will allow Android to grab a large portion of the pie, and draw manufacturers who can see the profit potential from tablet hardware.  These numbers are impressive, but will likely seem pale when the Amazon Kindle Fire is released, which is seeing upwards of 50,000 pre-orders daily according to internal Amazon documents obtained by the Cult of Android blog.

This parrots the meteoric rise of Android phones in another way as well — you'll see this 27 percent number trying to be dismissed by detractors and nay-sayers everywhere, using all sorts of outlandish metrics to try and sweep it under the rug.  The fact remains — people want Android tablets, and are buying Android tablets.  With the release of Ice Cream Sandwich and the Fire, this number's going to grow even faster.  We're here.  Deal with us, or get out of our way.

Nortel, once one of the biggest telecoms company in the world but now in the death throes of bankruptcy, has selected Google’s $900 million bid for its patent portfolio as the stalking horse bid. This doesn’t mean that Google will automatically win Nortel’s massive array of telecoms patents, but it does mean that Google is the preferred buyer.

Google, which has a history of lobbying for patent law reform, has been the target of many patent litigation suits. Google’s relative infancy means that it has a lot less patents in the vault than big-hitters like Microsoft, Oracle and IBM, and buying Nortel’s portfolio of 6,000 patents could provide better protection against patent litigation in the future. It’s worth noting that both Apple and RIM have showed interested in the portfolio, too.

Mashable speculates that the patents — which are nearly all telecoms-related — will be used to defend against Oracle’s attacks on Android’s use of Java. We reckon that Google is simply looking to cover its future endeavors in the world of networking. In the absence of patent law reform, and continued threats to net neutrality, owning a bunch of telecoms patents sounds like a very sensible move.

Okay, so it’s a little later than expected, but we’re happy to report that at least some Northeast Regional trains have now been augmented by AmtrakConnect. This (free) WiFi has been available on Acela trains for some time now, and in a few lucky Regional trains in the Northwest. Amtrak still hasn’t confirmed the existence of this connectivity, so we can’t say for sure just how many of its trains have been suitably augmented, but we know that at least number 69, the Adirondack, has it, because we’re using it right now. Connectivity is a little rough and speeds are decidedly low — problems that can certainly be applied to this particular railway relic as a whole.

What good is an Ultimate Driving Machine if it can’t get a little help from its friends? A new hazard-dodging system from BMW could help these Bavarian autos get a bit more chatty, each vehicle talking to nearby traffic across long-range wireless networks. In a series of video demonstrations, the car maker shows how the car-to-x system could give advance warnings of traffic, emergency vehicles and weather hazards by enabling one car to beam warnings directly to others. BMW hopes to connect the system to mobile phone networks as latency times improve and possibly even access data from traffic light systems. Sure, GM and Ford got there a bit earlier, but you can see BMW’s implementation demonstrated after the break, and check out the via link for more videos of the world’s most boring game of GTA.

windows phone 7 nodoSome of you who own Windows Phone 7 devices are still waiting for your pre-NoDo preparation update — never mind NoDo itself. A few workarounds have been posted, but unfortunately they didn’t work unless your carrier had completed testing and was ready to schedule the update.

Now, however, the Chevron WP7 team’s Chris Walshie has delivered a handy little utility that will allow you to update any Windows Phone 7 device — regardless of your carrier.

    1. Download and install the Windows Phone Support Tool (x86 or x64) and the ChevronWP7 Updater (x86 or x64)
    2. Launch ChevronWP7 Updater and select your language. If your language isn’t listed, stop and do not update.
    3. If were running WP7 build 7004 (you can verify in Zune) then run the updater twice.

Once the process completes, you should be able to copy and paste to your heart’s content. Let’s just hope all this update foolishness gets sorted out before we’re supposed to receive Mango.

windows 8Select Microsoft Connect partners — major players like HP — have been given their first taste of Windows 8. According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven’t been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore — which is being referred to as History Vault — has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We’ve also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It’s believed that you’ll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that’s left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.

Windows 8 now available to OEMs via Microsoft Connect originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 08:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

iPhone 4S GPS ImprovementFinally, the secret behind Apple iPhone 4S’s path-breaking GPS system is out. It is the cutting edge GLONASS navigation system of Russian make, considered to be one of the finest navigation systems that run alongside GPS in its iPhone 4S models. This news is no secret, and anyone who minutely went through the iPhone 4S specification page on the Apple website can witness a mention of GLONASS in the GPS column.

However, the introduction of Russian technology into a high profile gadget such as the iPhone has been welcomed by Russian media and people alike. This revolutionary association of GLONASS with the iPhone 4S GPS system has been considered as the beginning of a powerful amalgamation of technological brilliance and company reports from GLONASS share that the iPhone GPS has become 50 percent more reliable with the Russian counterpart on board.

    GLONASS – Facilitating Remote Penetration

GLONASS is the Russian alternative to GPS, however, in spite of being less precise than its rival, it depends on a different set of satellites, which besides facilitating deeper penetration could work in some cities where the US system is less effective.

This further clarifies that rather than just having 31 satellites for GPS to fix up a location, the iPhone can also get data from the 24 dedicated satellites for GLONASS. This collectively brings the number of satellites working on the iPhone GPS to 55, thus multiplying the chances of finding and zeroing on a precise location more accurately. This can be an added advantage for iPhone users considering the fact that until now users had to rely on the ‘vague light-blue circle’ surrounding several city blocks.

Experts opine that the GLONASS association with iPhone 4S GPS is more so like ‘dual-core location’. Now, since the iPhone 4S wireless processor is a Qualcomm model, according to a revelation from IHS iSuppli. Since it works similarly to GPS, GLONASS support doesn’t require recoding of GPS software, but it does require a different radio.

This new found recognition for GLONASS has inspired Apple and the users alike and analysts believe that this will definitely pave way for more Glonass-supported phones in the forthcoming months. By the way, have you witnessed the magic of Glonass in your iPhone 4S?

    Share your experiences with us.

New iOS 5 Jailbreak is only semi-tethered

Not thrilled with the idea of people getting stranded without a working iPhone if they use the current, tethered, iOS 5 Jailbreak, Big Boss has come up with an intermediary solution — and iOS 5 semi-tethered Jailbreak.

The semi-tethered jailbreak will allow you to reboot on the road, but with limited functionality. It is enough that you are no longer stranded, and you can use your phone, text, and many other features. This is just until you get home and can use redsn0w again to “just boot tethered”. Once you do that, you’re back to fully functional state.

Or as Miracle Max might put it: “It just so happens your Jailbreak here is only semi-tethered. There’s a big difference between semi-tethered and all-tethered. Semi-tethered is slightly untethered. Now all-tethered, well with all-tethered there’s usually only one thing you can do — Go through your clothes and look for loose dock cables.”

In short, you get Phone, Messages, many of the built in apps, no Safari or Mail, but if you have App Store browsers or Gmail apps, you can use those. There are some other trade-offs as well, so hit the source link below and read carefully before deciding to pull the trigger.

Siri for iPhone 4sApple had unveiled Siri prior to its release and there was a lot of talk about the characteristics of this voice recognition software. But all that was before the phone wasn’t released, now that it’s out and in the hands of millions. People are finally getting to know this personal assistant better.

The technology of voice recognition software wasn’t introduced for the first time with iPhone 4S, in fact previously Android phones have used the technology in their phones. At the time of unveiling, Siri had been named as artificial intelligence, but now as Siri functions in the real world, we know what it can really do. Though the functions performed are robotic, Siri goes beyond the simple yes and no. It is user-friendly software and knows how to intelligently answer the questions of its user. Operating on a your-wish-is-my-command approach, Siri is not only limited to setting alarms and sending messages, it has other qualities too.

For instance Siri knows how to properly conduct searches and even gives suggestions. One of the most interesting characteristics that Siri has been built with is its ability to communicate in three languages, English, French and German and it also understand various accents.  When seen operating in the real world, Siri had no trouble understanding a British accent from an American accent. In fact, Siri can converse in a British accent. Siri has helped Apple sales shift into the next gear as after the release of the iPhone 4S, more and more customers are mesmerized by the voice recognition software.

Not forgetting the fact that Siri after all is artificial and not human, many people have tried testing it and have come up with strange stuff. For instance if one asks Siri, “what is love,” it will reply with a definition searched up from the internet. Siri was obviously not programmed for the entertainment of its owner, its purpose is to serve as a humble personal assistant. So asking Siri to tell a joke would only result in disappointment. However, it may actually search a joke from the internet and tell it to its user, which may not be so bad after all!

Jersey girls and boys can now tap and pay their way around, but for the Garden State’s myriad of malls, cash’ll still have to do. Not so for the Ozzies Down Under who may soon never have to leave the comfort of food court chairs — if they’re packing a Nexus S, that is. Designed as a concept by University of Sydney start-up SDigital, special coaster-like “brand stickers” affixed to eatery “brand tables” would relay fast-food menus to mobile phones via NFC. Hungry, hungry humans would then make their selections, order up and receive a vibrating notification when the food’s ready. It’s a contactless payment solution not unlike the QkR platform MasterCard demoed for us last month. And given our ever-increasing crawl towards the bleak adult baby form factor of our potential Wall-E futures, we’d say this tech’s right around the public release corner. Head on past the break for a video demo of the tukkis-numbing, Foodcourtia tech.

After breaking an all-time iPhone sales record of a whopping 4 million in the first weekend after launch in US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK on October14, 2011; Apple as promised is all set to launch iPhone 4S in 22 new countries by the end of October. The specified markets are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Latest reports indicate that the online ordering system for Apple Inc. in the 22 new countries has been updated with the iPhone 4S pre-ordering pages. An estimated shipping time of 1-2 weeks has been listed depending on the country- a few countries including Slovenia, The Netherlands Mexico, Czech Republic is an indication that Apple Inc. is going through a grueling session to keep pace with the increasing demand.

Apple iPhone now has its presence in 105 countries across 130 carriers. Bill Gates and Paul AllenMicrosoft, citing Google’s tyrannical 95% share of the European search market, has lodged a formal complaint with the European Commission. It’s not like Microsoft is breaking any ground here — the European Commission has been investigating Google’s alleged violation of European competition law since November 2010 — but there’s no doubt that the addition of Microsoft’s gravitas will affect the proceedings.

Microsoft’s complaint reads like a sincere and plaintive cry for help against the Google Overlord. Microsoft lists no less than six damning reasons why Google’s behavior is anti-competitive — from Windows Phone 7′s incompatibility with YouTube, to its nefarious handling of Google Books — and finishes with a wide-eyed plea to the European Commission to please find Google guilty.

For those of you that have been following Microsoft’s own antitrust troubles over the last decade, don’t worry: MS is quick to point out the irony in the situation. “There of course will be some who will point out the irony in today’s filing. Having spent more than a decade wearing the shoe on the other foot with the European Commission, the filing of a formal antitrust complaint is not something we take lightly. This is the first time Microsoft Corporation has ever taken this step. More so than most, we recognize the importance of ensuring that competition laws remain balanced and that technology innovation moves forward.”

It sounds like Microsoft, having well and truly gone through the wringer, wants Google to be held similarly accountable. That’s fair enough, right?

iPhone as a SpiphoneDid you know that your iPhone can work as a spy phone? Well, for most of you it must have come as a surprise. It rather works courtesy the accelerometer in your iPhone, which could be used to decipher your computer keystrokes i.e. whatever you type into your PC keyboard — including passwords and e-mail content.

Well, the technique is that the accelerometer of an iPhone – lying close to a computer keyboard one is typing on, can detect the vibrations created by typing and then decipher the program into comprehensible sentences with as much as 80 percent accuracy. Analysts are skeptical about the threat proposition of this iPhone trait, considering the security breach it can cause.

    How it works

Experts believe that this technique is not so easy and works primarily by detecting pairs of keystrokes, rather than individual keys. Firstly, it models “keyboard events” in pairs and then adjudges whether the pair of keys pressed is on the left or the right side of the keyboard. It also makes an attempt to adjudge whether they are close together or far apart on the QWERTY keyboard.

On working this out, comparisons of the results is made to a preloaded dictionary where each word has been broken down in the same way. For example, the word “canopy” is made up of five keystroke pairs. These are: “C-A, A-N, N-O, O-P and P-Y”. The code is translated by the program as Left-Left-Near, Left-Right-Far, Right-Right-Far, Right-Right- Near and Right-Right-Near. This is now compared to the dictionary (which is translated according to this code) to suggest the most likely word. With a dictionary of around 58,000 words, the system has achieved word-detection accuracy rates as high as 80 percent.

    Fighting the Hack

Further studies into this reveals, that the effective range for an iPhone spying on all information is just 3 inches. So, if you want to protect your computer data from being shared on the iPhone keep your device further away from keystrokes. Although, this is very rare incident in all likelihood; however, possibility of a hack cannot be ruled out.

    Synopsis

Research and experiments have revealed that this technique isn’t a smooth ride and the results are difficult to read; although in most cases it has been found that smartphones launched in the last 2 years are more sophisticated and gear to perform as a spy phone. Preliminary results show that this technique performed on the iPhone 4 showed a more decipherable and accurate result than that performed on the iPhone 3GS.

Moreover, your phone could also be infected with some spyware. Initially, when you receive this, it could be through a seemingly harmless application that even refrains from asking to use any of the phone sensors that might make you suspicious. And once downloaded, the keyboard detection malware could be activated – so the next time you start typing with your iPhone next to you, it could be deciphering your text.

What are your thoughts on this. We look forward to hearing from you.

Verizon users — are you getting the Galaxy Nexus? [from the forums]

    Galaxy Nexus

A Nexus phone on the Verizon network is a pretty big deal.  Plenty of people never thought it would happen (guilty), as Verizon has the muscle to have a bit more control over their network than most, and the Galaxy Nexus may take a bit of that away.  We're all happy to be mistaken about it though, trust me.  You guys deserve this phone, and have been waiting for this phone since the day everyone realized that Verizon wouldn't be carrying the Nexus One after all.

So now that it's official, how many of you are going to storm the gates and grab one ASAP?  There's other options of course — the Motorola RAZR looks like a hell of a phone in it's own right, and HTC's Rezound will turn a lot of heads with it's sexy look.  And heaven only knows what's coming around the corner.  We couldn't make an easy decision ourselves in this case.

It's a lot to think about.  It's also an interesting metric, and we all love interesting metrics.  Take a minute, hit the forums, and tell the world what you plan on doing once the GNex hits the shelves.

Android Central forums poll: Now that it's official, what are you doing?

This time we have a band called Turnback who managed to get hold of a couple of iPhone 4S’s on launch day and set about shooting a music video.

On October 14th, 2011 we received 2 brand new iPhone 4S smart phones. On Sunday October 16th we shot the video at the famous NYC nightclub Webster Hall. Over the next several days, with little sleep and lots of coffee, the final video was finished.

The video was for the bands new single, Cellophane Sky and was shot using just the 1080p video camera in the iPhone 4S. It was later edited on a Mac using Final Cut Pro. We don’t know if this is the first music video shot entirely with an iPhone 4S but we do know that the results are really impressive!

    ommwriter

I have a thing for full-screen text editing. I use WriteMonkey for my creative writing needs, and VIM in a full-screen PuTTY session for my Web development work. That being the case, I’m all over the monospace, dark-background, focused editing scene.

OmmWriter attempts to take that aesthetic and make it somehow more spiritual, with three picturesque backgrounds and ambient background audio tracks (there are seven of each in the paid version).

I’m of two minds about this app. On the one hand, yes, it’s beautiful. But if you want music as a background to your writing, why not pick your own soundtrack with Winamp or Foobar2000 running in the background?

OmmWriter also offers three keyboard-clicking sounds, which are kind of nice. None of these features are groundbreaking, really. OmmWriter could be seen as a way to gently ease into the world of distraction-free writing — in case something like WriteMonkey’s dark background is just too oppressive for you.

After the fold you can see a video showcasing several of OmmWriter’s features and creative soundscapes.

How to save a video attachment with iOS 5 on iPhone or iPad

Wondering how to save video attachments you get in Email to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad camera roll? In previous versions of iOS, while you could easily tap-and-hold to save pictures in Mail, Safari, Messages and other built-in-apps, trying to do the same with movies — movies mailed or messaged from other iPhones and iPads! — did nothing. (Except frustrate me. Seriously. I almost dented my iPhone trying!)

iOS 5 changes that. Now, just like with pictures, all you have to do to save a video is:

    1. Open the email, messages, etc. that you received the movie in
    2. Tap on the icon or preview and hold on it
    3. When the Save Video button pops up, Tap it!

That’s it. The video will now be saved to your Camera Roll for you to use as you so wish.

For more on iOS 5, check out our massive iOS 5 walkthrough. Have any other great tips for sharing or saving video on your iPhone or iPad? Let us know!

Version 5.3 of Skype for Windows has just been released, with the main emphasis of the new release being improved call quality, and the quality of video received by mobile Skype users. Presumably one party of the video call must be using Skype for Windows 5.3, though.

Beyond improved call quality, not much has changed. You can now see your friends’ presence icons when contact cards are collapsed, and the topic editing button is now always visible on the conversation header. For a complete list of changes, hit up the Skype Garage blog.

CNN‘s Brandon Griggs wrote a column speculating as to why most computer generated voices, including Apple’s Siri, are made to sound female.

Research suggests this preference starts as early as the womb, Nass said. He cites a study in which fetuses were found to react to the sound of their mother’s voice but not to other female voices. The fetuses showed no distinct reaction to their father’s voice, however.

Another answer lies in history. According to some sources, the use of female voices in navigation devices dates back to World War II, when women’s voices were employed in airplane cockpits because they stood out among the male pilots. And telephone operators have traditionally been female, making people accustomed to getting assistance from a disembodied woman’s voice.”

Griggs suggests HAL — and I’d add Vader, Cylons, CARR, WOPR, MCP, Agent Smith, and others — have led North Americans to become more than a little leery of computers with boy parts. My take is that North American gadget users are a nerdy computer society, and we nerds prefer a sexy female voices telling us what to do. Economics 101.

Note: In the U.K Siri’s voice is male. Read into that whatever you will.

Update: CNN also took issue with the synthetic sound of Siri’s voice.

“What’s interesting to me is how they seem to intentionally make her speech sound artificial — they could choose to make her speech more seamless and human-like, but they choose instead to highlight the technology,” she said. “That makes you aware of how high-tech your gadget is.”

David Barnard of Tweet Speaker points out one of the more obvious explanations:

Not without dramatically increasing file size!

Apple asks Toyota to remove jailbreak Cydia theme

In news that will no doubt shake the very bedrock of your belief system, Apple has asked Toyota to remove its Scion theme and its advertising from ModMyi, a Cydia repository. The Scion theme has been available for weeks, but after it received a ton of press in the last couple of days, Apple finally lashed out.

It’s not like we should be surprised, considering Apple has claimed in the past that jailbreaking is illegal – but at the same time, did the Cupertino cronies hear about the ruling that made circumventing DRM, and thus jailbreaking, legal? Anyway, whether Toyota was supporting illegal, legal, or deliciously gray and ambiguous, activity, it doesn’t matter: Apple asked Toyota to remove the theme, and Toyota graciously bent over and capitulated.

This story raises a much more interesting topic, though: this is the first time a multinational company has publicly acknowledged and embraced the jailbreak community. Considering jailbreaking is technically legal, and Cydia’s creator, Jay Freeman, estimates that up to 9% of OS devices are jailbroken, it simply makes good, commercial sense to target jailbreakers with ads. Toyota was simply trying to make some money, for shame!

As long as Apple continues to throw around its increasingly-expansive mass, the legality of jailbreaking will continue to be inconsequential. It will be interesting to see if another big company dares embrace the jailbreak community after this, too.

iphone4scameraWhenever a new iPhone comes out, people rush to have the first music video or short film shot entirely on its camera. But it’s not often you hear about a big-time Hollywood production using this kind of device for anything other than behind-the-scenes stuff. Yet in an interview with IFTN, the cinematographer for The Avengers, Seamus McGarvey, admits he supplemented their more professional camera setup with a few shots from the iPhone 4. Don’t get too excited, though: it’s not like they had it on the helicopter rig or they’re using it for serious effects shots. The benefit of the iPhone 4 is that it’s compact and easy to operate. McGarvey says that a couple of the shots are even in the trailer, and I think I’ve picked them out. I highlight them not because I love the iPhone so much, but to explore how a device like this could possibly fit into a multi-million dollar shooting schedule. Also, it’s Friday.

    auslogics defrag
Auslogics Disk Defrag has been part of my system maintenance toolkit for quite some time. With the release of version 3.2, it’s now even better at tidying up and optimizing your system’s hard disk drives. In addition to a cleaner, easier-to-use interface, Disk Defrag 3.2 offers improved single file and folder defragging, better processing of multiple disks, a simplified scheduling screen, and more informative tool tips. Auslogics has also fine-tuned the program’s defragmentation and file consolidation algorithms.

For laptop users, there’s a new option to lock the program if your system is running on battery power — so scheduled operations don’t kick in and drain your power source at an inopportune moment. If you happen to have an SSD installed in your PC, you can head to the Disk Defrag options and exclude it from scanning (many think that defragmenting an SSD is a very bad idea).

Auslogics Disk Defrag is a free download and works with most versions of Windows.

It was just last week that we got to take home the Acer Aspire S3, the first Ultrabook to go on sale here in the States. Unfortunately, it doesn’t live up to the pillars laid out by Intel: its performance trails similar machines, its battery craps out early and the design, while portable, is too chintzy to make it a bellwether for skinny Windows laptops. Our verdict, in a sentence, was that you’d be better off getting a MacBook Air, or at least considering other Ultrabooks — namely, ASUS’ line of Zenbooks.

As it turns out, one showed up on our doorstep just a few days later. In many ways, the UX31 is everything the S3 is not: it has a gorgeous all-metal design and comes standard with an SSD and 1600 x 900 display (not to mention, a case and two bundled adapters). And with a starting price of $1,099, it undercuts the entry-level (and similarly configured) MacBook Air by two hundred bucks. So is this the Ultrabook we’ve all been waiting for? We suggest pouring yourself a large beverage, settling into a comfy chair and meeting us past the break. We’ve got a lot to say on the subject.

Gingerbread kernel source for the Samsung Epic 4G now available

    Epic 4G

Samsung has released the kernel source code (and other GPL bits of code for open-source software) for the D700, which we all know and love as the Epic 4G.  Does this mean a stable Gingerbread build is imminent? We have no idea, but we do know that the many of you guys who have long forgotten about the official update path should now have even better custom ROM's to flash, and developers can carry on doing what they do independently from Samsung and Sprint.  That's why we love open-source software.  If you're a kernel developer, or think now would be a good time to start, grab it from the source link (search for D700).
