Poll: Should Apple allow tethering apps in the App Store?

Twice now, once with Netshare in 2008 and now again with iTether in 2011, Apple has initially approved and then turned around a rejected an app that let iPhone users tether for free.

While some carriers in some countries allow for free tethering on the more expensive data plans, many countries, including the US do not. That means those carriers make extra money charging for tethering plans, and apps like Netshare and iTether threaten that extra money (or double-dipping, as you may wish to call it.)

I don’t know if Apple has carrier agreements in place to prevent tethering apps and protect revenue streams, the way they once did to prevent VoIP over 3G, but should that really be the users problem? Should it be Apple’s to police? If you get a tethering app and stay beneath your data cap, shouldn’t that be between you and your carrier? And if you’re on an unlimited plan, aren’t they already sending nastygrams if you go over a certain amount anyway?

TiPb Nation, what do you think? Should Apple allow tethering apps in the App Store?

Windows Phone 7 DemoWanna try out Windows Phone 7? You don’t have to get a real Windows phone to experience the Metro UI. Microsoft has come up with a fun way to attract iPhone and Android users to try out their mobile platform.

The developers at Microsoft has created a web application to demonstrate the Windows Phone 7. Simply open your mobile Safari browser and point the address to http://aka.ms/wpdemo. You’ll be fully immersed in the Windows Phone interface. The website is very well-designed that you can touch and swipe to experience the Metro UI.

I have to say it’s a good initiative for Microsoft to push out a great demo for everyone to try out the Windows Phone. The tile-based interface is clean and informative. However, as a long-time iPhone user, I still think the iOS is the best.

Experience Wildlife ‘LIVE” with Instant Wild iPhone App

Instant Wild iPhone AppA warm welcome to all Nature Lovers, which I’m sure you all are. If you are wondering what Nature lovers have here to do in an iPhone Blog; well, its time to celebrate the endeavor of the Zoological Society of London, which has come up with an unique app – Instant Wild App that promises to stream LIVE photographs of wild animals to you on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch from motion sensitive cameras placed in remote locations across the globe.

Doesn’t it sound exciting? If your quest as a wildlife enthusiast has always been to reach out to real locations and adventures instead of being satisfied watching National Geographic and Animal Planet on television, Instant Wild iPhone app is exactly the one for you as it transcends you to real locations from the comfort of your home or even on your daily commute.

Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, this app is an honest endeavor of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) to involve wildlife enthusiasts and iPhone users worldwide in identifying some of the rarest and endangered species on the planet. So, if you have been waiting for an opportunity to do your bit ‘Animal Conservation’, but couldn’t pursue your passion due to lack of time, Instant Wild iPhone app brings you the perfect opportunity.

Instant wild app

You can play a direct role in helping conservation scientists understand and protect wildlife; and who knows you may also be the first to discover a new species, or rediscover an animal once thought to be extinct, all on your iPhone. If you are thinking HOW; well, read through this:

Instant Wild App Features – At a Glance

- The Instant Wild App enables you to see the latest live images from our camera traps around the world

- See all our cameras installed at different strategic locations around the world such as Kenya, Sri Lanka, Mongolia and the UK and choose which ones to follow

- Receive a notification when a camera—one you’ve selected to follow, takes a new photo

- Zoom in on image details

- You may make an attempt to identify the species in the image and help conservation researchers in the process or even feed your knowledge knowing about the species.

- Share the most interesting and picturesque images on social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Delicious, etc

- Maintain a list of your favourite images

However, one of the most important requirements you need to have so as to experience the best from Instant Wild iPhone app is that owing to the ‘live’ nature of the content, Internet access from your phone (3G or WiFi) for some app functions to operate is a necessity. There have been a few reported bugs with the app, which of course is a rare occurrence especially when internet access is poor or patchy. In that case, you may encounter just a black space, wherein some or all images never load.

Things you ought to know….

Instant Wild is one facet of the ZSL’s EDGE of Existence program, with EDGE standing for Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered species. One of the aims of the program is to raise awareness of unique, endangered species around the world, along with developing conservation strategies for those animals.

Instant Wild App is an experimental project from Zoological Society of London and it has been a constant endeavor to try to get as many photos coming in to your Apple device. However, Instant Wild would like you to know that cameras may be down at times and therefore cannot guarantee the long term provision of images. There is a great level of optimism that with active participation and help, this project will continue for many years to come and play a responsible role in the world.

Animal lovers with iPhone may discuss what’s been spotted in each photograph with others online and view live species sighting opinions on the Instant Wild website http://www.edgeofexistence.org/instantwild

What do you think about this app? Share your thoughts.

Google Bar

We hope you’re enjoying that new Gmail and Reader interface, because Google isn’t done repainting every nook and cranny just yet. The next bit to get a facelift is the Google Bar. The thin dark gray strip of text is going away, and in its place is a new persistent UI element that combines search and Google+ tools, including a share button and notifications. There’s still quick access to other services available in the Google menu — just hover over the logo and you’ll be presented with a bunch more links. Love it? Hate it? Doesn’t really matter… it’s coming, so you might as well embrace it. Get a preview after the break.

In a conference call to press this afternoon, the FCC announced that it will grant AT&T’s request to formally withdraw its application to acquire T-Mobile US. In addition, the agency will also release a 109-page report today that discusses what it found over nine months of reviewing the merger. In short, the FCC found that the cons of the deal outweighed the pros, and AT&T is likely to build out its LTE network regardless of what happens with the carrier’s buyout of T-Mobile. The report determined that the merger would create too many network inefficiencies and job losses, and whatever cost savings that would be generated by the deal wouldn’t be passed on to the customer.

While the FCC won’t pursue the draft order signed by Chairman Julius Genachowski mandating the merger be brought before a Federal judge, AT&T isn’t completely done. It’s become a great deal harder — its dealings with the Department of Justice are still looming, and in the meantime Reuters is reporting that the carrier’s in talks with Leap Wireless to sell some of T-Mobile’s assets — mainly as a last-ditch effort to still gain the support of both governmental agencies. So this saga is far from over, but opponents of the merger can still sigh a breath of relief. Follow the break for AT&T and Sprint’s official responses to today’s decision.

Update: The report is now available! Head here to read all 109 pages of it.

Editorial: Carrier IQ — the ‘evil’ we agree to and hate that we did it

HTC Legal

Seems like every time you turn around you'll see corporations using sneaky tricks to gain a competitive advantage over a different, yet equally sneaky corporation.  That's usually how money is made by the people who are best at making lots of it — at the expense of others.  The cell phone industry is no different, even though we wish it were.  Yes, I'm talking about Carrier IQ, and it's my turn to bitch.

Carrier IQ sells a stock client for BlackBerry, Symbian, and Android.  There's strong evidence that  they also make client software for other smartphone platforms, and even semi-smartphone OS's like Bada or BREW.  But they're only making it easy to get the same type of data your carrier has been collecting about you since the minute you turned your cell phone on.  If they're collecting it in an insecure manner, which has happened, that's bad on them, and they need to fix it — pronto. But they're not doing it on their own. They're doing it at the behest of the manufacturer and the carrier, who uses the data to determine how to make changes that get you to spend more money when they offer you the latest shiny.  If 72 percent of the people use a certain feature, you can bet your last dollar that more work goes into making that feature "better" so it's a stronger selling point.  Carrier IQ, as a company, could care less what you do with your smartphone, when you do it, or why.  All they do is make it easier for the people you give your money to each month to see why you like your phone.  I don't work for HTC or AT&T, but I'm sure easy data collection and aggregation makes for a compelling sales pitch.

CIQ isn't doing anything it's not supposed to be doing, unless there's a software bug in play.  The software was purposefully placed there in order to track what you're doing in real time.  Apparently, it works pretty well.  Some may argue that it's a rootkit, or a flaw of some sort, but to the people using the product — again, the carrier and manufacturer — it's a feature, one that they pay money to include.  Remember, you are not HTC's (or Samsung, or LG, or RIM, etc.) customer — companies like Verizon and Sprint are, and all parties find the data that's collected pretty damn useful, so they aren't likely to stop collecting it.

It could be argued that you don't have a choice in the matter. You bought the phone. And while there might be (and usually is — see the picture above from a CIQ enabled HTC phone) some vague reference to the phone collecting data about how you use it, you likely skipped over that section, and it's not all that up-front about what's being collected or how it's being done. But on the other hand, that's probably true about 90 percent of what your phone's doing at any given time.  It works exactly how it's supposed to work.  Getting mad about it after the fact isn't very productive, and isn't going to solve the problem any time soon.

Vote with your wallet.  You have the option to say no to this sort of data collection software, and that's done by not buying phones that use it.  Every major carrier in the world now carries one of those.

Yes, I think Carrier IQ is a bad thing, done by unscrupulous people so they have more pennies to count.  But all the hate towards the company that writes and sells the software is misguided.  They are only filling a need, and if they stop someone else will step up to replace them.  Enough words have been written about it, yet the solution for Android fans only needs three:

Buy a Nexus.

Another quarter has come and gone, and you know what that means: Nielsen ratings are out again. The latest batch of numbers don’t reveal anything wildly new, but they’re still just as telling nonetheless: 44 percent of mobile subscribers in the US use a smartphone in the US. Of those, 71 percent are in possession of an Android device or an iPhone. Additionally, 56 percent of all phone purchases during the third quarter were smartphones. And — this probably won’t come as a surprise to anyone — at a decisive 42 percent, Android remains the number one smartphone OS while Apple is still perched firmly on top as the leading manufacturer (28 percent). Check out the source link below and graph above for more of the tiny details.

Regarding the use of the name “iPhone 5?

Regarding the use of the name

No one outside of Apple, and likely very few inside of Apple, if anyone at all at this early stage, knows what the 2012 iPhone will be called. For the sake of convenience and familiarity, we’ve been using iPhone 5 (or whatever Apple ends up calling it).

But Apple can call it anything they want. iPhone 4G. iPhone 4GS. iPhone 4GS Mark II Epic, LTE X. (Okay, that’s very unlikely, but the point is it’s their phone, their name.)

There’s no logical reason they couldn’t call it iPhone 5 either. The model number will be 5,1 after all, and for most mainstream customers the logical number after 4 — even after 4S — is 5. Mainstream customers don’t know, and don’t care, what generation the device is. Nor should they.

Apple doesn’t really care either. They’ve used 3 twice and 4 twice now. They could easily use 5 twice next. They still call iOS 5 on Apple TV “software 4″, after all.

Marketing has nothing to do with reality and everything to do with perception and presentation.

There will almost certainly be a new iPhone next year, but until they officially announce it and it’s name, we’ll be using iPhone 5.

We have some somber news to bring you today: Charles Walton, the man who pioneered the rise of RFID technology, has died at the age of 89. The Cornell-educated entrepreneur garnered more than 50 patents over the course of his career, but it only took one to cement his legacy — a 1973 patent for a “Portable radio frequency emitting identifier.” It may not have been the first RFID-related invention, but Walton’s breakthrough would prove to be foundational, spawning many similar patents, including ten from the creator himself. It all began at the Army Signal Corps, where Walton worked after studying electrical engineering at Cornell and earning a Master’s degrees in electrical engineering and economics of engineering from the Stevens Institute of Technology. In 1960, he accepted a position at IBM, where he conducted research on disc drives before founding his own company, Proximity Devices, in 1970.

It was at Proximity where many of Walton’s patents came to life, including his initial design, which he developed alongside the Schlage lock company and eventually licensed to other firms, as well. He would go on to earn millions from his technology, though as Venture Beat points out, he may have been a bit too far ahead of the curve. Many of Walton’s patents expired by the time RFID devices caught on with big spenders like the Department of Defense and Wal-Mart, thereby excluding him from any subsequent windfall. But that didn’t seem to bother him too much, as evidenced in a 2004 interview with Venture Beat: “I feel good about it and gratified I could make a contribution.”

If you are still trying to figure out how to fix up your iPhone 4S battery woes with the iOS 5.0.1 update released sometime back and yet did not do much to solve the problem, Hang On! Apple Inc has come up with another update – iOS 5.1 beta for Developers. Will it prove to be lucky this time?

Confirmed news sources indicate that iOS 5.1 beta is for the Apple iPad 2, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3rd and 4th gen, the GSM and CDMA iPhone 4 and of course the iPhone 4S. It has however, to be installed via iTunes 10.5 and also a word off caution for all those who choose to upgrade: Once upgraded to iOS 5.1 beta you cannot downgrade it to iOS 5.0.1 or a lower version. Check out the full release note below:

iOS SDK Release Notes for iOS 5.1 beta 1

Important: This is a preliminary document for an API or technology in development. Although this document has been reviewed for technical accuracy, it is not final. Apple is supplying this information to help you plan for the adoption of the technologies and programming interfaces described herein. This information is subject to change, and software implemented according to this document should be tested with final operating system software and final documentation. Newer versions of this document may be provided with future seeds of the API or technology.

CONTENTS:

Introduction
Bug Reporting
Notes and Known Issues

Introduction

iOS SDK 5.1 provides support for developing iOS applications and includes the complete set of Xcode tools, compilers, and frameworks for creating applications for iOS and Mac OS X. These tools include the Xcode IDE and the Instruments analysis tool among many others.

With this software you can develop applications that run on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 5.1. You can also test your applications using the included iOS Simulator, which supports iOS 5.1. There are two Xcode iOS SDK 5.1 images, one for installing on a Macintosh computer running Mac OS X 10.6.7 (Snow Leopard) or later, the other for installing on a Macintosh computer running Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion).

This version of iOS is intended only for installation on devices registered with Apple’s developer program. Attempting to install this version of iOS in an unauthorized manner could put your device in an unusable state.

For more information and additional support resources, visit:

http://developer.apple.com/pro…

Bug Reporting

Please report any bugs not mentioned in the “Introduction” section using the Apple Bug Reporter on the Apple Developer website (http://developer.apple.com/bug…. Additionally, you may discuss these issues and iOS SDK 5 in the Apple Developer Forums: http://devforums.apple.com. You can also access more information about iCloud for Developers at: http://developer.apple.com/icl…

Notes and Known Issues

The following issues relate to using the 5.1 SDK to develop code.

Accounts

When creating an iCloud account, you can use any Apple ID as long as it is a full email address and not a MobileMe account. If you have a MobileMe account, you can move that account to iCloud. You can find more information at: http://me.com/move

APIs

The NSNetService class and CFNetService APIs do not include P2P interfaces by default. To browse, register, or resolve services over P2P interfaces, an application needs to use the Bonjour DNSService*() APIs noted below.

Setting the interfaceIndex parameter to kDNSServiceInterfaceIndexAny in the following API’s will not include P2P interfaces by default. To include P2P interfaces, you must now set the kDNSServiceFlagsIncludeP2P flag when using kDNSServiceInterfaceIndexAny or set the interfaceIndex to kDNSServiceInterfaceIndexP2P. The affected APIs are:

DNSServiceBrowse
DNSServiceRegister
DNSServiceResolve
DNSServiceRegisterRecord
DNSServiceQueryRecord

GameKit

App Icons and Profile Photos are not loading in apps using Game Center.

iCloud Storage Provisioning profiles must be enabled for iCloud in the iOS Provisioning Portal. You can enable a provisioning profile for iCloud by navigating to the App ID section of the iOS Provisioning Portal and configuring your App ID for iCloud. After enabling the App ID for iCloud, regenerate your provisioning profiles to enable them for iCloud.
The setSortDescriptors: method of NSMetadataQuery is not supported. In iOS 5, files that are protected via Data Protection cannot be used with iCloud Storage APIs.

File names are case-insensitive in Mac OS X but case-sensitive in iOS. This can lead to problems when sharing files between the two using iCloud. You should take steps on iOS to avoid creating files whose names differ only by case.

Movie Player

Starting in iOS 5.0, in order to facilitate finer-grained playback control, a movie player is not automatically prepared to play upon creation. Call the prepareToPlay method to prepare the movie player. For more information, see MPMoviePlayerController Class Reference

Music Player

Using shake-to-shuffle causes Music app to freeze and playback to stop.

Newsstand

FIXED: Deleting an issue that was marked as the currently reading issue could cause a crash.

Security

In iOS 5, the signing of certificates with MD5 signatures is not supported. Please ensure that certificates use signature algorithms based on SHA1 or SHA2.

Xcode/Developer Tools

A bug in the documentation organizer causes an exception when you type in any field in the content area. To prevent the need to log in to the developer website from Xcode, download documentation sets locally using Xcode’s documentation preference pane and enable the ‘Check for and install updates automatically’ checkbox as a workaround.

“uninstall-devtools” script mistakenly removes files and packages even if Xcode is still running. Be sure to quit any running copy of Xcode before starting the “uninstall-devtools” script.

The Network Link Conditioner daemon cannot be launched after installing the Networking Link Conditioner without a reboot. You can manually workaround the issue with a restart or by the following command: sudo launchctl load /system/library/launchdaemons/com.apple.networklinkconditioner.plist.]

In the iOS 5 development tools, it is possible to extract APIs used by an application and have them checked for use of private APIs. This option is offered when you validate your application for app submission. Of course if you check out any of the URLs in the above they will not take you to the required page unless you have a developer account.

iOS 5.1 Beta for Developer

Has anyone tried this out? How well do you think this update will fix up the iPhone 4S woes? Be the first to share here.

windows phone 7 nodoSome of you who own Windows Phone 7 devices are still waiting for your pre-NoDo preparation update — never mind NoDo itself. A few workarounds have been posted, but unfortunately they didn’t work unless your carrier had completed testing and was ready to schedule the update.

Now, however, the Chevron WP7 team’s Chris Walshie has delivered a handy little utility that will allow you to update any Windows Phone 7 device — regardless of your carrier.

  1. Download and install the Windows Phone Support Tool (x86 or x64) and the ChevronWP7 Updater (x86 or x64)
  2. Launch ChevronWP7 Updater and select your language. If your language isn’t listed, stop and do not update.
  3. If were running WP7 build 7004 (you can verify in Zune) then run the updater twice.

Once the process completes, you should be able to copy and paste to your heart’s content. Let’s just hope all this update foolishness gets sorted out before we’re supposed to receive Mango.

iPhone Siri JailbreakIt is well known that the exclusive Siri feature – Apple’s official voice recognition service is not only the most popular but also the most enviable feature of the iPhone 4S. Thereby, since is release, there has been an earnest endeavor to inculcate Siri for iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4. However, there is jailbreak news here which reveals of a possible attempt to expand Siri Dictation to the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS.

Simply Add the Cydia Source to Download the Hack

This jailbeak connoted Siri0us and available via Cydia is Nuance-based. However, the end result derived from the jailbreak is the same as Siri’s dictation capabilities. All you need to do to get Siri Dictation running on your jailbroken iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 is simply ‘Add’ http://apt.if0rce.com to your list of Cydia sources and search for “Siri0us.”

Well, if you are still in doubt as to what ‘Nuance’ is; then let me tell you that the technology used here is actually Nuance-based dictation, which works great on the iPhone 4, transcribing words into text rather quickly. And the end result is pretty much the same as Apple’s Siri.

Known Issues

The developer, Eric Day has warned users a few things to be kept in mind:

- You might run into a bug when trying to install. So, if your iDevice keeps on respringing do not restore. Instead, use a SSH tool to remove the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AssistantServices.framework file.

- Again, it is important to keep in mind before installing Siri0us that the jailbreak is supported by ads and you’ll need an Internet connection for “Siri’s” microphone to show up.

Meanwhile, developers are still working to bring a Siri port to the iPhone 4, and have already come up with some pretty cool custom use cases, though the method violated Apple policies. But what the developer of Siri0us has done is that amazing tweak which allows you to use Siri dictation without the need of iPhone 4S system files. It just uses the voice engine which powers the flagship device from Apple.

It Does Work…

Many have tried Siri0us on their iPhone 4 and it seems to be working fluently, without any major hiccups. Needless to say, your accent may mess up with the dictation, which of course you can expect in the iPhone 4S as well. So, first try dictating small sentences and check if it works for you or not. Good Luck!

If you want to see Siri0us in action, you can check out the demo from iDownloadblog.com:

Is your iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS already jailbroken? Well if yes, then this wouldn’t be a bad thing to check out. But yes, do it under the developer’s guidelines and at your own risk! Have any of you used Siri0us? Do let us know.

CM7 on Kindle Fire

Well, with source code and root firmly in hand, it was only a matter of time before someone got a custom ROM up and running on the Fire. Of course, the first contestant for your hacked Kindle dollar is the reliable, and damn-near ubiquitous CM7. XDA Developers Forum member JackpotClavin posted a pair of images showing the Gingerbread-based ROM booted up on his 7-inch Amazon tablet. He isn’t offering the code for download yet, primarily because there are still a host of bugs to work out — including a severely mixed up touch panel thats about 90-degrees out of sync with actual display. On the plus side, it does appear that WiFi is working. We suppose if you’re impatient you can join the frothing masses begging Clavin to release the code, but we’ll be waiting for something a little more polished before risking our shiny new slate. One more pic after the break.

[Thanks, Matthias]

Now that Windows 8 images have begun leaking out, it’s only a matter of time until developers start releasing mods for Windows 7 which mimic upcoming features. Over at Into Windows, they’ve spotted one such mod already.

In the earliest Windows 8 images, we saw Windows Live integration on the taskbar. In the far right corner, there’s a user tile displayed. If you’d like to do the same on Windows 7, download Taskbar User Tile from DeviantArt user AngelWZR.

Once installed, your current picture will appear on the taskbar. Click it, and a menu appears which allows you to log off, switch users, and access the control panel. Right now, the mod only works if your taskbar is displayed on the bottom of your Windows desktop.

Multiple app markets crossing streams, causing problems for some

Cross the streams

Now this is interesting. Seems that some of you who have purchased apps from the Amazon Appstore are starting to see conflicts with the Android Market. A couple scenarios appear to be playing out. In some instances, the Android Market sees an app that was purchased from the Amazon Appstore, knows an updated version is available, but then fails on updating because the app wasn't actually purchased from the Android Market.  While we're not exactly sure what's going on, it may be an issue where some developers use the same signing key for applications in both the Android market and other app stores.  This could cause your phone or tablet to see the applications as identical.  That's just a hunch, and chances are google has a better grasp of the situation than we do.

Reversing things, as TWiT's Jason Howell points out, the Amazon Appstore app can see that you have an app installed and offer to unassociated it .. that other market … so that you can get updates and such through its services instead. How handy. But it also smells of someone standing next to your car in a parking lot, pointing out a dent you know wasn't there when you left your car, and then recommending a friend who can fix it on the cheap. There's just something offputting about it.

This could end up being an interesting push and pull, but we've got a feeling Google's got the upper hand here, being able to more easily and quickly tweak code to keep things in line. And as violent23 points out in our forums, Google's already aware of this and is on the case. Should be interesting to see how it all works out.

An iPhone 4 caused a major scare on an Australian passenger flight when it appeared to commence self combustion. The iPhone 4 belonging to one of the passengers on Regional Express flight ZL319 operating from Lismore to Sydney started to emit a significant amount of dense smoke accompanied by a red glow.

Luckily the aircraft had already landed when the incident started and a flight attendant carried out recovery actions which included extinguishing the iPhone. The incident has been reported to the Australian Transport and Safety Bureau (ASTB) as well as the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). The iPhone is also now in the possession of the ASTB for analysis.

opera 11.10 battery power

Just recently, the Opera 11.10 release candidate was made available for download. It brought a handful of important feature additions — like HTML5 File API support and IMAP enhancements — and loads of bugfixes. Nestled in amongst the other details in the Opera team’s announcement is one more interesting tidbit: Opera 11.10 offers improved battery optimizations.

The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft’s recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. While we’ve not seen any new benchmarks yet, we’re curious to know whether the Opera 11.10 RC offers any significant gains.

If you’re running Opera 11.10 on a laptop, let us know if you’re seeing an improvement in your battery life while browsing!

Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket review

Samsung Skyrocket

It was a long wait between the release of the international version of the Samsung Galaxy S II and a version for AT&T, but the U.S. carrier has now ended up with two of them.  One version is pretty faithful to the original (check out our review here), and the second version, the Samsung Skyrocket, is what were looking at today.  There's a good bit of difference, both the obvious (a larger 4.5-inch screen and an LTE modem) and the not so visible (different chipsets), but the user experience is the same for the most part.  Hit the break where we dive in and have a look at what the Skyrocket has to offer, besides having one of the best device names since the OG Droid.

The Good

The beautiful screen looks even better at 4.5-inches.  Handoff times from LTE to a GSM/HSPA network are quick.  HSPA+ fallback when not in an LTE area offers a better experience to the user.  Overall the phone is very smooth, like we're used to from the GSII line.

The Bad

LTE is hard on battery life.  A 4.5-inch screen may be too big for some.  AT&T's LTE network is in its infancy and still full of holes.  The different internals may mean longer wait times for updates from Samsung and AT&T.  NFC is once again notoriously absent from the software.

Conclusion

The Skyrocket stays faithful to the Galaxy S II line, offering the same (or better) performance and an identical user experience.  AT&T still needs to work on its LTE network, but with a fast handoff and fast HSPA network speeds to fall back on, the casual user will be pleased with its speed on the Internet.  The big, beautiful screen and LTE radio are hard on the battery (especially when compared to using it in a non-LTE enabled area) but that can be solved by carrying a spare battery or plugging it in when possible.

linegrapefruit

Okay, see that snaking line coming in from the right on the screenshot? That’s you. And see those large round circles? Those are supposedly grapefruits, only they won’t sit still – they keep moving up and down and cutting across your path. And if you touch one, you die!

That’s what you have to deal with in Line Grapefruit. But that’s not all – you’re also on a time limit. In fact, you have a very limited amount of time to make it through the “path” (for lack of a better word). You need to snake your way through the winding trail without touching anything. The good news is that a grapefruit only kills you if it touches the end of the line – once you’ve made it past the grapefruit, nothing happens if it crosses the path you’ve made.

This is not an easy game, but it’s quite unique – I can’t recall seeing another game quite like it.

Because of its 7-inch display screen, the Dell Streak 7 is probably the smallest tablet computers on the market. Many people may find this a disadvantage, but its size provides it with supreme mobility. Additionally, it has some fantastic specifications such as highly effective processor chip, 4G, and also to top it all off it features a comparatively low cost. How exactly does it compare with other Google android tablet computers out there?

Positive points about the Dell Streak 7

SD Card Memory Slot: Although the Dell Streak 7 has only 16gb on board storage space, you can increase this by a maximum of 32gb as there is an integrated SD card port. The port will also support other types, including Micro SD, and it is a good choice for individuals who wish to transfer pictures (because SD cards tend to be more typical in cameras.)

Appearance: On studying the tablet, the initial perception is usually likely to be that it’s significantly small compared to the majority of tablet computers available. Consequently the display screen is likewise scaled-down. The gadget has been built to be as easily transportable as feasible and it undoubtedly lives up to that. The display screen quality is very good (though compact) with excellent color processing. Viewing angle isn’t as flexible as other pc tablets, most likely because of the smaller sized display size. The display screen is of Gorilla Glass to safeguard from scuff marks. The device seems fairly strong and well-built, yet still be light-weight in the hands.

Connection: That’s where the Dell Streak 7 jumps in front of the pack. It can connect with 4G networks along with the usual 3D networks and WiFi hotspots. Its only competitor for this at this time is the Motorola Xoom.

This brand new 4G broadband internet is only just opening now. Right this moment it’s accessible to around a third of individuals in the US, and the system is continually increasing. 4G gives a fantastic network speed, so much that you’ll be capable of download complete movies while connected with 4G, and obviously it also usually means less buffering and juddering when playing streaming songs on the road, too. Just like any 3G or 4G technologies, you will have to purchase a month-to-month data plan to use it, but if you require continuous online connectivity with a strong data transfer speed, this might over-shadow the extra price.

Digital camera: The back camera is an amazing 5MP, putting it close to the top of the class for tablet pc digital cameras. It also has good quality functions like flash, auto-focus, multi-shot mode and much more. It will likewise take videos in High def. The digital camera on the front side is okay for video chats.

Usb 2 . 0 Slot: good to see this helpful function on a device this size. The USB port will mean straightforward link with your computer or a mass storage device for instance a flash drive or exterior hard disk drive. It’s also possible to effortlessly link an external keyboard set, making it simpler to type.

Price: If you’re able to agree to the trade off when it comes to display size and storage area, the Dell Streak 7 is extremely cost-effective, beginning around the $300 level. The model with 4G happens to be about $450 – a lot less pricey than the 3G version of the iPad (which unfortunately doesn’t actually have a 4G alternative.) This will make it a fantastic choice for everyone who’s searching for a well-priced tablet computer that also has great processing strength.

Dell Streak 7

Dell Streak 7

Negative points about the Dell Streak 7

Os: The Dell Streak 7 runs Android 2.2 OS. The most recent edition of Android is 3.0, and the Streak doesn’t have the capacity to become upgraded. Android 2.2 wasn’t created for tablet pcs (it was designed for mobile phones) which could make the consumer experience less smooth compared to something such as apple’s iOS. You still obtain access to the Android Market, which includes a great deal of applications, but the most current applications might not run on Android 2.2.

Life of the battery: Dell happen to be extremely cagey about disclosing battery time with this device, and there’s a strong reason for that – battery life is bad. 3.5 to 4 hours is all you’re getting – not even half of what you can expect in the Samsung Galaxy or the iPad 2. This will make the tablet pc not really such a good option if you’re on the go a lot with no access to a charging point.

Consumer Experience: The touch screen works easily, but the on-screen key pad is one challenge. Because of the little display size, the keyboard seems very confined and can be difficult to strike the proper keys. You’ll need to type in landscape mode to get any kind of hope of typing successfully. Of course, you might like to locate an external keyboard which may be connected through the USB port.

Conclusion

The Dell Streak 7 is a great pc tablet with an exceptional asking price. The price point alone may help it coax some consumers away from Apple, Samsung and so on. Nevertheless, the inadequate battery will turn a similar number of individuals off.

In summary, the Dell Streak 7 features a high quality display screen, great functions, a quick processor chip, and is extremely light-weight and therefore mobile. But you will need to think about the battery pack issues, the modest display size and the edition of Android operating system, prior to making your final decision on whether this is the suitable pc tablet for you personally.

windows 8 wallpaper

With Windows 8 milestone 3 now up for grabs for select Microsoft Connect partners, it’s inevitable that leaked bits and pieces will start popping up around the Web. In fact, the first “official” wallpaper image from the still-brewing OS is already making the rounds.

As you can see, it’s got a similar feel to the good ol’ Windows 7 default background, but features a more subdued smattering of cerulean hues. Those of you who want to use the Windows 8 wallpaper on your current desktop can download it from our file dump.

A few other details have been revealed, too. According to ZDNet’s source, the Windows 8 Jupiter libraries and Twin UI are starting to take shape — though all that’s been located thus far are “[various files] scattered throughout the OS” and the aptly-named twinui.dll.

Sand Trap

Sand Trap is one of those games that at first seem too hard to bother with, but when you try to stop playing it you discover you’re hooked.

The goal is to get as much sand as you possibly can out of the maze and into the bucket at the bottom of the screen. You need to rotate your maze every which way to get the sand rolling around it. You then try to direct the sand to one of the exits of the maze, and hopefully into the bucket. It took me several tries to actually get sand into the bucket, but that might be due to the fact that I didn’t even realize the bucket was there at first. Things improved significantly after that.

As you level up, the mazes get more complicated, with moving parts and other things making your life more difficult. Once you manage to get through all these obstacles and get enough sand into your bucket, you can move on.

As I mentioned, this is not an easy game, but it’s highly addictive. The graphics remind me of some long lost game from the 80s, but this just proves that you don’t need super graphics and crazy sound to make a game work. There’s a soothing guitar track playing in the background and that’s it, as far as I could hear, and you can enjoy it just as much with no sound at all.

If you like a fun physics challenge, don’t miss out on this one!

The Sprint Epic 4G Touch possibly has a fix on the way soon for loss of signal and other bugs

Epic 4G touch

The Sprint Epic 4G Touch has been plagued by a known issue for quite a while now.  Not everyone experiences it, but enough do to make it a serious concern for many people, including the folks at Samsung.  We're talking about the "LoS" (Loss of Signal) bug — it mostly happens in areas with spotty coverage and affects both 3G and 4G networks.  It's fairly simple to recover, just reboot your phone, but that's clearly not the correct way to go about resolving it.  Thankfully, it looks like Samsung and Sprint have a fix in testing to address this, as well as some other minor annoyances that come with every new smartphone.

Epic 4G Touch user kingsway8605 says he currently has the testing patch from Samsung, and he received it after a conversation with a developer who responded to his cries for support.  Supposedly the explanation for the bug itself is as follows:

It is isolated to areas with spotty coverage, which is why some don't experience it at all. If you are in 4G and leave 4G coverage, or in 3G coverage and leave 3G coverage, and in the process of sending packets, there is apparently a bug where the phone does not detect this and would just give up after it could no longer talk to the old tower.

This makes sense from an engineering perspective, and if the fellows at Samsung are right this patch should address it.  The new OTA is Android 2.3.6, with a baseband of SPD710.10.S.EK02, and a build number of GINGERBREAD.EK02.  According to kingsway8605, if this passes initial testing we should see it in December.  Developers are already exploring ways to help retrieve the OTA files from the cache partition, so maybe we won't have to wait.

iPhone Wi-Fi ProblemApple’s support forums are going berserk with complaints of Wi-Fi capabilities of Apple’s devices being affected owing to the iOS 5 update. Most of the complainants (although not all) are owners with the iPad, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, who are complaining about broken connectivity, weak signal strength, and failure to connect via Wi-Fi. The iPad2 however, hasn’t seen any complainants till this news was drafted.

One of the most common grievance is of devices updated to the iOS 5 failing to connect to a WiFi network, often giving an ‘unable to connect’ message despite the fact that the WiFi network is working fine on other devices. Many users have otherwise complained of their Apple devices taking a very long time to connect in spite of detecting networks. Also once connected, it can take a while to be actually enabled to send and receive data.

Although the issue hasn’t received any confirmation from Apple Inc, the social media seems to be flooded with reports of this problem. One user has in fact reported uninstalling iOS 5 and returning to iOS 4.3 in a bid to get his work going temporarily. However, when he later tried re-upgrading to iOS 5, the problem with WiFi connectivity resurfaced.

It’s a fact that iOS 5 had problems with battery life as well as the invalid SIM error messages earlier. Although Apple has made an honest effort in doing away with these issues with successive update – iOS 5.0.1; the new found ‘Wi-fi connectivity’ issue is sure to create more woes for Apple in days to come.

Have you experienced similar problems to the ones mentioned above? Do let us know about it and also we’d like to know what device and which iOS version you have been using.

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Motorola’s Droid RAZR takes enough pages out of the classic textbook of smartphone differentiation to assemble its own chapter. It sets a new standard for thinness in LTE devices, uses leading-edge display technology, resists flexing, glass breakage and water damage, has a striking design and thoughtfully selected materials, stretches battery life, matches with a bevy of optimized accessories, and enables remote file and media access via Motocast software . Who’s it for? Just about any Verizon customer willing to pony up.

Its rival HTC has also long played the one-upsmanship game. It has invested in a software layer designed to have populist appeal. Moreover, it has catered to US carriers’ priorities by being first out of the gate to support T-Mobile’s 3G network (with the first Android phone, the G1) and Sprint’s and Verizon’s 4G efforts, as well as one of two to initially support AT&T’s LTE network.

The 2011 Formula 1 racing season just wrapped up in Brazil, but Sky is already breaking down what it will bring to the series as it takes over UK coverage next year. Launching in March, Sky Sports F1 HD will be a channel dedicated to round the clock coverage of the world’s most technologically advanced racing series including every race, practice, and qualifying session. Sky customers with the Sports and HD packages will see the HD channel appear at number 408 on the dial, although there’s no word yet whether or not it will be available on BT Vision or Virgin Media. Other tidbits include a promise of Sky Go access, and that despite the broadcaster’s big 3D push, there’s no such coverage planned for 2012. Seeing how long it took for true HD broadcasts from F1 we’re thinking that could take a while, but here in the US we’d simply settle for a promise of no more tape delayed broadcasts on Fox (and some competent challengers for the Red Bull team while we’re asking) for next season. Until then, check out this brief video trailer, plus a press release with all the details after the break.

iPhone SiriWell, it might be a debate, for some, that Tellme and Siri are a comparison. But today we’ll tell you why both the technologies are not even comparable, let alone the thought that one leads the other in capabilities. Tellme, Microsoft’s voice function utility on Windows Phone and Siri, the voice assistant for Apple iPhone 4S, have almost nothing in common. For instance, Microsoft Tellme lets you dictate text, do a search on the basis of voice commands, which is not what Siri does, technically.

The thing is that, the Tellme features are spread all over the Windows Phone functionality, while Siri on the other hand, is an all-in-one package, containing not only all that the Windows Phone can do, but 10 times more than that.

While the guys at TechAU have taken out the time to do an extensive research and carry out a detailed comparison of Tellme and Siri, it won’t be a bad idea to share their demonstration in this post. The video compares the two voice based utilities side by side and brings out the better product out for you, eventually. Just in case you want to know it even before the video begins, Siri wins it by a big margin, as the Omnia 7 Windows Phone struggles to detect the voice properly and moreover, ends up searching every other text on Bing. Have a look at the video demo after the break!

Now that you know how Siri leads Tellme in terms of possibilities and its capabilities, one might argue that the video only discusses only one specific part of Windows Phone’s voice features, as compared to a whole lot of Siri experience. Well yes, that’s what the point is. Siri is a huge and much larger experience, as compared to the amount of tasks that can be achieved through Windows Phone’s voice features.

Siri might not be a god-like voice assistant, to be honest and it does fail to do quite a few things, and in fact, most of the things if you’re not a native English language speaker, but it still is far greater than what Tellme can do. So yes, Siri may be partly a hoax, but then Tellme is comparatively nothing. Microsoft needs to port all its Windows Phone features on to voice, only then can we say Tellme is something like the Siri assistant.

tripadvisor windows phone 7TripAdvisor, the popular travel planning tool, has just launched an app for Windows Phone 7. Just like the mobile website, the app allows you to search for anything travel-related — from hotels and flights to restaurants and points-of-interest to visit once you reach your destination.

Geolocation is supported, which allows TripAdvisor to quickly locate places nearby. But while that’s a neat feature, it’s also a bit of a downer — because, really, it’s about the only feature TripAdvisor for WP7 brings to the table that its mobile Web app doesn’t already offer (its browser-based geolocation doesn’t work with WP7 at the moment).

While it’s nice to see Windows Phone 7 users getting some big-name apps, it’d be even nicer if we saw some packing a bit more swagger.

Still, TripAdvisor for WP7 might just be worth installing on your device if you’re frequently on the go — at least until a better browser arrives with the Mango update.

TripAdvisor app for Windows Phone 7 now available originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 05 Apr 2011 09:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

A tablet running Ice Cream Sandwich? That’s what China’s Fuzhou Rockchip has apparently produced with the Android 4.0 PAD, as seen by our brethren over at Engadget China. According to the manufacturer, this slate is the very first to run Android 4.0, having been put together only a couple of weeks after Google released the source code for its latest OS. Rockchip’s being rather mum on specifics and release dates for supported devices, though it has revealed that this particular prototype’s powered by its 1GHz RK2918 processor. The company’s released a teaser video as well — check it out for yourself after the break, and do also head over to Engadget China for some hands-on shots.

iPad vs. iPod touch vs. Kindle Fire: Which should you get?

Comparing the pros and cons, costs and features, between Apple’s iPad 2 and iPod touch, and Amazon’s new Kindle Fire

iPad vs. iPod touch vs. Kindle Fire: Which should you get?

Trying to decide between an Apple iPad 2 or iPod touch and an Amazon Kindle, either for yourself or as a gift for someone else? There’s a lot to consider — the quality and dimensions of the hardware, the features and flexibility of the operating system, the availability and diversity of the content, the difference in cost and value, and we’ll take you through all of it, point by point, to help you decide.

Location

iPad vs. iPod touch vs. Kindle Fire: Location

The first and easiest filter is simple geography. If you live outside the U.S., Amazon has such limited content support that it might as well be non-existant. Apple by contrast has good support for apps and increasing support for music, movies, and more around the world.

  • Kindle is U.S.-centric
  • iPad and iPod touch have better international support

Cost

iPad is literally twice the price of the Kindle Fire and while an argument can be made that the iPad is by far a better value, if you only have $200 in your budget, you’re better off considering the Kindle Fire or the much smaller iPod touch.

  • iPad starts at $499
  • Kindle Fire is $199
  • iPod touch starts at $199

Mobility

iPad vs. iPod touch vs. Kindle Fire: Mobility

iPad has a 9.7-inch screen. Kindle Fire has a 7-inch screen. iPod touch has a 3.5-inch screen. The iPad is good for running more expansive apps and immersive content, the iPod touch for more on-the-go, interstitial use. The Amazon Fire is a great compromise between the two size.

  • iPad is large and heavy, portable but not mobile, requires a travel bag
  • Kindle Fire is medium sized, can fit in most large pockets
  • iPod touch is small and ultra-mobile, easy to carry anywhere

Connectivity

iPad vs. iPod touch vs. Kindle Fire: Connectivity

If you need to access the internet away from your home, work, school, or other Wi-Fi hotspot, currently only the iPad has a 3G option. If you don’t have easy access to a Mi-Fi or tethering, Kindle Fire and iPod touch go offline.

  • iPad has 3G option
  • Kindle Fire and iPod touch are Wi-Fi only

Hardware

iPad vs. iPod touch vs. Kindle Fire: Hardware

The iPad has amazing fit and finish and is absolutely best in class in most areas, with the notable exception of the rather pathetic front and rear cameras. The iPod touch is similar, though has a lower screen technology (no inter-plane switching) to keep costs down as well. The Amazon Kindle Fire uses the BlackBerry Playbook chassis which is great but not Apple great.

  • iPad is high-quality glass and aluminum with excellent display
  • Kindle fire is good quality, re-purposed plastic with good display
  • iPod touch is high-quality glass and aluminum with okay display

Software

Apple built the iPad and the iPod touch to fully take advantage of their iOS operating system, including all the great features like FaceTime for free video calls, tons of great built-in apps, and Safari, the best mobile browser in the business. Amazon has built a special version of Google’s Android Gingerbread OS specifically tied to the Amazon store and to best show off Amazon store content. Because it’s a “fork” of Android, it doesn’t get Google’s apps like Gmail, Navigation, or Market.

  • iPad and iPod touch run full version of iOS for multi-function usage
  • Kindle Fire runs special Amazon fork of Android optimized for buying and consuming Amazon content

Support

Apple has retail stores throughout the U.S. and in many cities around the world. In addition to their online and phone support, the ability to walk into an Apple Store and take a free class on how to setup and use your device, or get a Genius Bar appointment to fix it, can be invaluable. Amazon is the world’s largest online retailer with a stellar reputation for online support.

  • iPad and iPod touch have not only online and phone support, but Apple Retail and Genius in-person support.
  • Amazon Kindle Fire has online support.

Apps and games

Apple still has the most apps in mobile, including over 100,000 specifically built to take advantage of the larger iPad screen and over a half-a-million for iPod touch. If games are a consideration, the App Store typically gets them first and with the best, most fluid graphics. Amazon has built their own version of the Android market with less content but arguably better curation than Google’s.

You can also get a Kindle and other Amazon apps — and Google apps — for iPad and iPod touch, but you can’t get Apple apps — or Google apps — for the Kindle Fire.

  • iPad has access to purpose-built large-screen iPad apps as well as iPhone/iPod touch App Store apps
  • Kindle Fire has access to Amazon appstore approved Android apps
  • iPod touch has access to most iPhone App Store apps

Accessories

iPad vs. iPod touch vs. Kindle Fire: Accessories

Both the iPad and iPod touch have been on the market for years and have tons of great cases and other accessories available. Also, Apple allows accessories to connect via dock port, Bluetooth or AirPlay, meaning you can connect your iPad or iPod touch to a wide arrange of gear and gadgets, everything from cars to cameras to Apple TV, to special-purpose scientific instruments. Amazon Kindle Fire is just hitting the market so it will take a while for a lot of accessories to come out.

  • iPad and iPod touch have huge variety of accessories available
  • Amazon Kindle will take a while to ramp up accessories

Future-proofing

There will likely be an iPad 3 sometime next spring, potentially with a double-density display and other hardware improvements. There was no new iPod touch this year but there might be one next fall. Both, however, are mature, well supported products and if you want either now, you’ll get a great device now. The Amazon Kindle Fire is a brand new device and inarguably an immature one at this point. Amazon will no doubt introduce a new, hopefully much better, hopefully much more internationally supported, Kindle Fire sometime next year. If you’re not dying for one now, you might be better off waiting.

  • New iPad 3 likely in spring, but iPad 2 is solid now
  • New Kindle Fire sometime next year, current Kindle Fire immature
  • New iPod touch likely next fall, but current iPod touch is good now

Bottom line

While this is an iPad and iPod touch blog, and we’re no doubt biased, the Amazon Kindle Fire is so new, so U.S.-centric, and so obviously intended to be little more than a front end to the Amazon Store that it’s tough to recommend. Future versions could be outstanding, but right now you have to really not want an iPad or iPod touch, and really want an Amazon tablet to get the Kindle Fire.

  • The iPad is best if the big size is a plus and not a minus for you, if you want the most apps optimized for the most screen real-estate, if you want 3G connectivity, and something that can better replace a laptop or netbook for light computing work.

  • The Kindle Fire is best if you live in the U.S. and are a heavy user of the Amazon Store, if you want something smaller, lighter, and cheaper than an iPad but bigger than the iPod touch, and if media focus and pocket-ability is more important than flexibility for your needs.

  • The iPod touch is best if you want the smallest, lightest, cheapest, most mobile solution possible, if you want the most app and accessory choice available, if you want something that’s as close to a phone-style experience that possible without being a phone.

Addenda: Other tablets

We didn’t include other Android tablets here because they’re simply not a mainstream alternative at this point, but if you’re a hardcore Android enthusiast head on over to Android Central for a ton of coverage and help choosing between the myriad brands, sizes, and implementations, including the Barnes and Nobles Nook Tablet, which may be something to consider if you’re leaning towards the Kindle Fire.

If you’re a diehard BlackBerry enthusiast, check out CrackBerry.com for all the PlayBook info, and if you’re lucky enough to find a webOS TouchPad still on the market, PreCentral.net has you covered.

Yes, Motorola’s latest slinky slim smartphone has just cleared the FCC, but before you get too excited, nothing about it has changed. From all appearances, the XT615 remains targeted solely at international markets with dual-band 2100 / 900MHz WCDMA. Of course, it’s certainly usable here in the States (in a pinch), thanks to quad-band GSM support, but if you demand a svelte handset and blazing fast LTE, you’re most certainly better off with its more powerful sibling. Aw, shucks.

TiPb Picks of the Week for November 26, 2011

TiPb.com Picks of the Week

Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game.

To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break!

Etsy – @andrewwray

A lot of you are probably already familiar with Etsy, the online e-commerce website that focuses on buying and selling handmade and vintage items, and they’ve recently released a really great looking iPhone app to help you browse the service on the go. Etsy for iPhone lets you browse and purchase one of a kind accessory items and clothing directly from independent sellers.

As a buyer, you can browse by category and set your own filters to narrow down your search results (there are a lot of things on Etsy!) and check out your shopping cart right from within the app. As a seller, you have most of the Etsy merchant tools readily available whenever you need to access your listings or manage your business without having to jump onto your computer. It’s a great way to sell and shop! If you’re into vintage items, Etsy has always been one of the best places to shop, and they’ve just made it that much easier by making the service accessible anywhere you are — check it out!

Type2Phone – @sethclifford

Since the very first time I jailbroke my iPhone 3G a million years ago, I’ve wanted a way to control it without taking it out of the dock. I’ve used Veency to run a VNC server on the phone and then screen share into it, but it’s really overkill for what I need, which is essentially just text entry. I can manage to hit the home button and swipe around a little just fine while the phone is docked, it’s the typing that becomes laborious if I’m answering a text message or if I want to quickly paste some text into a field.

Enter Type2Phone. I’m sure you can figure out what it does, but it’s actually fairly slick in how it does it. You use Bluetooth to pair your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad with your Mac, and activate the app on the computer. Tap into a text field and start blasting away. You’re using your Mac’s BT connection in lieu of a BT keyboard, but it works in exactly the same way.

Aaaaand… that’s pretty much it. Which isn’t a bad thing, because I’m sure if you tried to bolt a bunch of other unnecessary stuff onto an app like this, somehow it would stop working. The only thing I’d like to see would be a way to actually hit say, the “Send” button from the keyboard. Just hitting enter drops you down a line, but a Cmd-Enter would be a fine way to get that done. Then you could basically slide to reply to a text, fire off a response and not touch your phone at all. I can also see someone perhaps wanting to keep an iPad on as a secondary display for something like Twitter, away from his/her main workspace really finding this functionality pretty useful.

And for everyone who’s thinking “Why don’t you just use Siri to answer your messages? DUH!”, well, when other people are on a conference call or working around me, I like to embrace basic social courtesies and respect their needs. Otherwise, yeah, you’re totally right. In the meantime, Type2Phone is a cool little utility that makes life at least a little easier. I’m all for that.

Beauty and the Beast: Storybook Deluxe – @chrisoldroyd

My little girl adores the Disney Movie Beauty and the Beast. Now that Disney has released this app, she has completely taken over ownership of my iPad 2. Beauty and the Beast: Storybook Deluxe is based on the Disney movie and includes games, movie clips, puzzles, coloring pages and even sing-along songs from the film.

The animation, as expected is superb and the whole app is really well put together. It tells the story in an interactive way and offers a read along mode or the story can be read out to you. This one should keep any little princess happy for quite some time!

Word Tumble – @Alli_Flowers

A familiar theme, this word game is great on either iPad and iPhone. Find a word inside the box of letters. You can go forwards, backwards, up, down, or diagonally. The longer the word, the more points you get. So far, so similar to a dozen other games, right?

Here’s the catch. When you find a word, the letters disappear from the playing field, just like Bejeweled or Tetris.

There are several versions you can play, although the basic game play is the same. I like the one minute game. The one minute game can stretch out and last for quite some time, because the more you score, the more time you get back.

The only negative to this game is the background music, which is either on or off. I’d like to be able to lower it because it also lets you know when your time is running out. The music is less than great.

But the game is addictive! I even found a fun way to play with a partner, and maybe keep the game going extra long. My nephew and I play together – he finds words on the left side of the board, and I find them on the right. (Hooray for capacitive screens!)

Instagram – @iMuggle

This week i’m going back to an app that I’ve used for quite a long time but just recently started “really using” again. I have always loved Instagram and the ease of which you can share pictures and add cool effects.

Ever since picking up my iPhone 4S I’ve been blown away by the quality of photos it produces considering it’s a phone. I’ve found myself snapping more pictures than ever. Instagram makes is easy to share them not only with my Instagram followers but all my followers and friends on Twitter and Facebook. If I just want to share something quickly, this is the app I choose 99.9% of the time.

Instacast HD – @reneritchie

My grand take-away from the original iPad launch was that it was the iPhone gone IMAX, and experiencing Instacast HD shows that, more than 18 months later, that take-away still holds true. Here’s why: Instacast on iPhone is all about quickly getting, streaming, and/or caching your favorite podcasts so you can listen to them feet down on the go. Instacast HD on IPad is a different experience entirely. It’s feet up, at pause, relaxed and ready to enjoy.

If that type of usage pattern sounds like it favors video podcasts, you’re not wrong. Settling back in the recliner, a tasty beverage to the side, a soft light in the back, a light rain-turned-snow-turned-back-rain outside, in just a few taps I was watching Georgia kick off the last iPad Live. A few more and I was watching TED. A few more and Steve Jobs was walking out on stage to introduce the iPad 2.

The interface took a bit of getting used to. Global tools like add podcast, refresh, favorites, AirPlay, volume, and action live along the thin left edge. Album art for your shows lives beside it for easy scrolling and selection. Episode-specific controls like mark, favorite, download, action, and play/stream live at the top, while mark all, the scrubber, and the show list live at the bottom.

Show notes get the rest of the screen, with a built in web view to handle links. You can swipe the browser away to get back to show notes, and you can swipe horizontally between shows.

Video shows go full screen with controls top and bottom and there’s even an embedded brightness control so you can make it look just so.

The one big bit of friction I hope gets addresses in an update is, while in video mode, tapping the “exit full screen” button takes you back to show notes while leaving the audio playing, there’s no equal and opposite “go full screen button” to return to the video. I should be able to toggle back and forth without moving my finger or having to figure out I need to cross back to the play/stream button to get the video back. Also, while they deserve a lot of credit for jumping on iCloud sync quickly, it’s still early days and some glitches will hopefully be worked out, by by Apple and developers.

Overall, Instacast HD makes fantastic use of the bigger iPad screen. It’s all the podcasts I want, right where I want them.

Real Racing 2 -@llofte

This Black Friday, I picked up an Apple TV (finally!) and Real Racing 2 on my iPhone and iPad. One of the really cool features about this combo is that with AirPlay, you can play multiplier on your TV with a split screen. Firemint calls this Party Play. All that’s required is to have an iPhone 4S or iPad 2 work as a host. My husband and I had a lot of fun racing against each other, last night, which is saying a lot because my husband typically hates anything related to Apple.

I will say that playing with the iPad is a little awkward because of how big it is. By the end of the race, it actually begins to a feel a little heavy.

If you have an Apple TV and an iPhone 4S or iPad 2, and do not have Real Racing 2 – what are you waiting for? It’s actually still on sale for Black Friday weekend, so now is the perfect time to pick it up!

Your pick?

You’re part of the team as well, so we will be choosing one reader to make a submission each week! Just look for the announcement on twitter or our Facebook page each weekend for a chance to be picked! In the meantime, jump into the comments and let us know your pick of the week!

jetbus

Once upon a time, there used to be a DOS game with a caveman and a human powered helicopter. The caveman would shuttle around the screen, madly trying to get customers to where they wanted to go.

Jetbus is not that game, but it’s obviously inspired by it. You’re driving a yellow school bus which has jets. I guess the jet engine takes quite a bit of space inside the bus, because you can only pick up one person at a time.

There are several doors on the screen, each with its own number. As you pick up a person, the status bar at the bottom of the screen shows you which number door you have to take them to.

You must fly your bus carefully, because if it gets bumped around too much, you lose. You earn money on each level, and can visit the garage to buy better jets and damping, power-ups, or even a whole new vehicle.

So while this game isn’t made as well as the original that inspired it, it does provide a few minutes of fun. And now, which one of you guys remembers the original and feels like pointing to it in the comments?

Waiting for an untethered jailbreak on iOS 5? The Chronic Dev Team has just released a crash reporter tool that will allow your to submit your crash reports to them instead of Apple. Crash reports are most likely the way Apple finds exploits in iOS and patches them.

The Chronic Dev Team is hoping to find exploits in the same way for a different reason – a jailbreak for all. You simply install the program to your computer, attach your device to the computer, and click a single button to send your exploits to the Chronic Dev Team. The program is currently available only for Mac users but a Windows version should follow over the next 24 hours.

We’ll update you as soon as we see one go up!

While we could argue that the Verizon Droid RAZR commercials are kind of over the top and really have nothing to do with the phone, Rogers at least stuck to the whole 'RAZR's are sharp' idea. Poor cake — I could have eaten that.

tastyplanet

So this professor comes up with a new toilet cleaner that works by “eating” the dirt; or so he thinks. That’s how the plot starts for Tasty Planet. You play the role of the toilet cleaner, but you’re not really a toilet cleaner after all — you’re a blob of gray goo that can eat anything that’s smaller than yourself.

As you chomp away, you grow — and as you grow, you can eat bigger and bigger stuff. The first level pits you against microscopic particles; by the time I stopped playing, I got all the way to eating cats and dogs. I know that sounds disturbing, but it’s a really cute game, and there’s no gore or anything like that.

Supposedly you keep growing and growing until you’re able to eat whole planets (hence the name). The challenge factor comes when you realize you can’t touch any critter larger than yourself – you’ll get “bitten” and become smaller. In the beginning you’re so small, that a single touch can kill you. Later on, you’re big enough that touching larger animals doesn’t kill you on the spot, but it does reduce your size. Each level is timed, so if you’re not large enough by the time your clock runs out, you need to start again. As long as you don’t touch the larger animals, you should be fine.

All in all, a fun, addictive little game. It’s available for iOS, too.

Official Motorola Droid 4 specs surface, Droid Razr adds a QWERTY keyboard

Moto Droid 4

Motorola Droid 4, again, already? Yikes to all who recently purchased a Motorola Droid 3, but official specs on the Motorola Droid 4 have come to light. Droid-Life received a tip containing all the information about the device, and it seems like quite a spec machine.

This 4G LTE device will feature a 4-inch display, powered by a 1.2GHz processor, the style of the Droid RAZR and a slide out 5 row QWERTY keyboard with LED edge lighting for the keys. The device features an 8MP camera on the back an HD camera on the front, and requires a special tool to remove the battery door? Just like we are unsure of how we feel abou the need for a special tool to pop the battery door off, we are also unsure of pricing and release time frame, but we can sure hope for soon! Hit the break for the specs breakdown.

Nexus Prime product page at Best Buy, $299 with 2-year agreement starting Nov 27?

Nexus Prime?

Once again we see Best Buy using the name Nexus Prime, this time it's on the new product page live on their website as of tonight.  Even more interesting is the fact that the $299 price point is good starting today (Nov. 17), with a 2-year agreement of course.  While we don't know if this name is going to stick, and no date is official until we hear it from Verizon, any news that shows this phone is close to a release is good news.  Another best buy snafu, or something nobody expects?  We're not sure what to think any more.  Hit the link to have a look, and discuss more in the forums.

windows 8 aero colorization aura

While we’ve still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they’ve discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It’s a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there’s a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme’s wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).

Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7 originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 07:40:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Ever wanted to develop iPhone and iPad apps but didn’t know how to program? It may be a little easier for you to go about doing it now because Stanford University is now offering its iPhone and iPad application development course online, and for FREE!

Keeping the fact in mind that the first iPhone apps course that came from Stanford in 2009 was downloaded more than a million times in about seven weeks, you might not want to miss it this time! iPhone Application Development is out now on iTunes U, from where you can download lectures and slides regarding the art of coding iOS apps.

Instructor Paul Hegarty attributes the course popularity to the appeal of Apple products and the instant gratification of creating apps for mobile devices. “There’s something about developing for the iOS platform that’s really exciting and fun because it runs on devices that everybody has in their purses or pockets, ” he said.

“There aren’t a lot of courses you can take that when you get to the end, to your final project, you can take it out of your pocket and show your friends.”

Hegarty said that his students develop a wide array of applications for the iPhone and iPad, including many that improve or automate their daily lives. Those include apps that manage laboratory experiments, keep track of food choices at campus eateries, or access the works of Shakespeare. Games and social networking applications are also popular.

The university source points that there are two pre-requisite courses that need to be taken before attending the iPhone and iPad Development course, for complete understanding – namely Programming Methodology and Programming Abstractions, both of which are available on iTunes U.

Moreover, to be able to understand the course and be able to develop iOS apps, you need to learn Objective-C language as the core programming language, where as the regular Stanford students do equip themselves with object oriented programming techniques before enrolling to the iPhone and iPad application development course.

Willing to take the free course at Stanford and develop iOS apps? Here’s the iTunes link! Get, set, code!

What the world needs now is just one thing, and that thing is a bejeweled Hello Kitty laptop. Fortunately, Japan’s Mouse Computer is well aware of this, which is why it’s unleashed the LuvBook S, pictured above. Designed in collaboration with Sanrio and Swarovski, this masterpiece is powered by a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i3-2330M processor and boasts an 11.6-inch, 1,366 x 768 display. It also packs a 500GB HDD and a 1.3 megapixel camera, but all that really matters is the swaggy centerpiece — a heart-ensconced Hello Kitty mug made out of about 1,100 Swarovski stones and untold buckets of cuddles. So last month we came across the hoopla of the Facebook Timeline – undoubtedly, one of the greatest things Facebook ever did to itself, a feature that is yet to be rolled out to most of the normal users. In case you do not know, Facebook Timeline compiles a biography style timelapse of a user, in the chronological order, as they happened and got archived on Facebook.

While the Facebook Timeline is still in beta phase and only available to Facebook app developers, many geekier folks have tried the workarounds and thus, activated the Facebook Timeline on their profiles. Taking the same approach forward, famous iOS app company Loytr, mostly known for MyPad for Facebook, has now come up with yet another Facebook-related app called Facebook for Timelines, letting you use Facebook on your iPad in the Timeline style, as compared to the boring conventional profiles.

But only when you use the app, you find out this app is way ahead of the Facebook Timeline on your desktop itself! It has the major iPad touch that you need in every biography you read though your iPad! You can flick through the transitions on your Facebook friend’s profiles or just simply choose to go to any friend’s profile straightaway, using the list compiled on the basis of alphabetical order. The flick, the animated transitions, is what the desktop versions of Facebook Timeline do not have – very much like iBooks or other reader apps on your iPad.

The home feed very much looks like the desktop browser version of Facebook being displayed on your iPad. Since the app is free of cost, the app sports iAds for revenue, though looking at the experience it offers, the ads do not affect much of the experience. The app is 5.9 MB in size and has a restriction to be compatible with iOS 4.0 or higher only.

The app gives you the option to create a Facebook Timeline in case you do not have one already. This is a cool feature for all those who haven’t activated the Timeline on their Facebook profiles as yet.

Since Facebook for iPad contains many bugs which are depicted in the user comments on iTunes as well, this can be a great third party Facebook app, especially if you like using your iPad more like a slate/e-book reading sort of a gadget. You can download Timelines for Facebook here for free.

Well, it appears that Three’s call center agents in Denmark won’t be able to wear pajamas into work anymore. Following the introduction of 3LiveShop in Sweden, the mobile carrier’s other Scandinavian group is introducing this rather novel way of shopping for new phones to Danes. Properly situated consumers may now elect to participate in live video chats with Three employees, who manipulate product photos and information on a heads-up display for customer convenience. (We’d like to imagine this nice lady has placed the Galaxy S II and iPhone 4 into the “maybe” pile.) Thankfully, shoppers won’t have to look presentable at all, as participating in two-way video conferences is entirely optional — along with more traditional voice and chat methods. If you’re curious to see a demo of the system in action, just check the video after the break.

[Thanks, Jonas]

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time of food and kinship and gluttony. But that also means a big step backward in your battle against the bulge (in your waistline—because you are quite fat). I wish I’d found out about this stereo iPhone mic yesterday. I was last-minute shopping for dictaphone for the Lady’s work, trying to find the cheapest MP3-recording model that wouldn’t suck. linegrapefruit

Latest Siri Hack Lets You Start, Stop, Lock, Unlock Your Vehicle

iPhone SiriOnly 5 weeks or so may have passed since the launch of iPhone 4S and interesting Siri hacks have started to pour in. A few days ago we shared with you a method to create your own Siri Proxy server using Ruby, and also shared how the creator himself, Plamoni, managed to control a thermostat through this proxy server. Today, we take a leap ahead, based on the same Siri proxy server created by Plamoni, to make Siri communicate with a Viper car remote, consequently letting the hacker turn his car on and off using Siri commands on his iPhone 4S!

Sounds incredible, isn’t it? Have a look at the video after the break!

The hacker, who goes by the name Brandon, has given away the details as well, on how he went on achieving this Viper car remote hack:

The “Siri Proxy” plugin I wrote handles interaction with a php script that runs on my web server. The php script, which I developed months ago for personal use, allows me to send commands to my car which has a Viper SmartStart module installed.

Current commands accepted are: “Vehicle Arm”, “Vehicle Disarm”, “Vehicle Start”, “Vehicle Stop”, “Vehicle Pop Trunk”, and “Vehicle Panic”.

This video is a proof of the fact that Plamoni’s Siri proxy can do wonders in terms of using Siri to endless possibilities – one such being this “Viper Control” plugin itself, being used to start and stop a Viper SmartStart enabled car.

To go more specific on the working, the voice command is sent via Siri to a Viper server. It is from there that the command is relayed through a cellular connection to the vehicle. As a consequence, the vehicle then broadcasts an update to the key-chain remote through RF.

Just when we’re talking about Siri hacks, we’d like to go by another one, which could well be a hoax but deserves a look. Two souls, Josh Evans and Ollie Hay  seem to be that geek to pull off such an amazer, claim to have invented a gizmo that makes use of EEG pads to detect brain waves, ultimately allowing Siri to be controlled through mind control, instead of voice.

As more Siri hacks and workarounds unfold, we’ll keep you posted.

YouTube adds Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks rentals

Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks

Google has been working hard to gather more media content these days and now, coming shortly after their Google Music announcement comes the news they've fleshed out a deal with Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks Studios to bring much of their content to YouTube.

Fans of animated movies? We’ve got the beloved animated classic, Alice in Wonderland and the newly envisioned Winnie the Pooh. Love Disney·Pixar? We have hits like Cars and Cars 2 all in one place. Up for a little bit of adventure? We’ll take you from the darkest depths of the oceans with all four of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, including the most recent blockbuster in the franchise Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Aside from just bringing the content in, Google will be working with the studios to offer YouTube Movie Extras with behind-the-scenes clips, interviews, and other exclusive content. The rentals are live on YouTube right now some you can likely pick up for $.99.

Firefox nightlies for Android have switched to native UI builds

Firefox nightly

If you recall a couple weeks back we mentioned that Mozilla was switching the Firefox for Android application to use native Android UI elements instead of XUL.  This was done to create a unified look and feel and improve performance, and now anyone can give it a run.  The fellows at Mozilla have now started pushing nightlies that include the changes.  The newer builds are faster, but of course like any nightly builds there will be bugs.  If you want to have a look, or if you're feeling like bug-hunting and helping out the Firefox team, grab the nightly here and install it.  You'll see that Firefox has come a long way, and they are slowly building a mobile browser that can rival a true desktop version.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a prison turn to robots for a little assistance, but South Korea looks to be going a bit further than most with its latest robotic endeavor. The country’s Ministry of Justice has announced that it will be conducting a one-month trial run of robot guards at a prison in the city of Pohang starting in March — a project that’s expected to cost one billion won (or about $863,000). “The robots are not terminators,” as the university professor in charge of the endeavor told The Wall Street Journal, but rather monitors that will patrol the corridors of the jail and alert the human guards if they detect any unusual activity. Inmates will also be able to use the robots to communicate with the guards, and the folks behind the bots are apparently doing their best to keep things from turning into too much of a dystopian future — they’re now said to working on making the robots appear more “humane and friendly.”

2011 Holiday Guides: Gifts for geeks

Geeks are really difficult to buy for. They know everything. They have everything. Every iPhone case, every iPad stand, one of each color for every model ever released. So unlike our other 2011 holiday gift guides that focus on awesome gifts to make your iPhone or iPad better, this one is branching out — this one covers everything not iPhone or iPad! (Well, not everything, but a lot of really cool, really awesome stuff we think your geeks will really love!)

UPDATE: Some of this stuff is currently on Black Friday sale! If you’ve been thinking about getting a great gift for your geek, check them out today and you’ll likely save a few bucks!

Boon Glo Nightlight with Portable Balls

Boon Glo Nightlight with Portable Balls

For the little geeks who never want you to turn out the lights when they go to bed, now they can take the lights with them to bed. For parents, the lights will fade slowly over a 30 min. period, letting your little ones drift off to sleep. For kids — listen carefully — monsters are deathly afraid of glowing orb lights!

The 24-105mm Travel Coffee Mug

The 24-105mm Travel Coffee Mug

They love photography. They love coffee. What’s not to love about a hot beverage holder that looks just like a lens? And if this size doesn’t suit you, there are a bunch of other sizes, up to full thermoses. Just remember — drink them, don’t shoot with them!

Air Swimmers Remote Controlled Flying Shark

It’s a balloon, it’s a shark, it’s remote controlled. What could be cooler than that? Just imagine it moving slowly, soundlessly down the hallway, around the corner. Cue the Jaws theme. Coming up from behind the sofa… Eyes black as coal.

Yeah, I think you’re going to need a bigger living room!

Star Wars R2-D2 Trashcan

Star Wars R2-D2 Trashcan

“Ooteenee!” Apparently that’s Jawa for “hey, flip the lid on that astromech so I can toss out this Bantha poodoo!” But honestly, what’s cuter than your very own R2-D2 trashcan? Not even a C3-PO coat rack to equal this for sheer geek chic, especially the mini desktop version. If you want it, though, I’d suggest getting it soon… before Jabba the Lucas dubs a dumb voice on to him. “Noooooooo!”

Electronic Firefly in a Jar

No, it’s not a real insect, and no, it’s not Captain Malcolm Reynolds and crew all vacuum sealed for your viewing pleasure in a Candor bottle, but it is faux geek goram glorious none-the-less. I got one of these for an office warming present and everyone asks about it. One of the best gifts in the ‘verse.

Stylin Online t-shirts

Stylin Online t-shirts

These are shirts that even Sheldon would love. From comic books to movies and TV shows, there are more fabulous t-shirts here than you could shake a bazinga at!

Gift Certificates

iTunes gift cards

If your special geek truly has everything, there’s still the one thing they can always use more off — MONEY! But since money isn’t that festive, you can “wrap it up” in a handy gift card for their favorite retailer and let them choose their own perfect geek-gift!

Your picks?

Remember, you’re part of Team TiPb too, so if you’ve already picked the perfect gift for your iPhone or iPad geek, or have the perfect idea for one, let us know in comments!

ChromeLite ASCII extension

Have you ever wondered what the Web was like before the Mosaic Web browser? If you were born in the last 20-odd years, or you only discovered your inner geek recently, did you miss out on monochrome monitors and the dial-up BBS era? Well, here’s your chance to get a sneak peek at history: grab the ChromeLite extension and marvel as the entire Web is transformed into ASCII characters.

Now, ChromeLite isn’t really all that functional. For the most part, it simply strips images and converts text into a monospaced terminal font. There are a few Easter eggs inserted — such as a fun message at the bottom of YouTube (image after the break) — and some fun ASCII art, but that’s about it. Rather oddly, most JavaScript continues to work — so you can still enjoy Google Instant Search!

ChromeLite was actually made by Google as an April Fools’ joke — and indeed, an annoying ‘you can uninstall this!’ message appears at the top of every page — but we’re kind of hoping that Google, or another developer, takes ChromeLite and turns it into a real ASCII browsing extension with configurable settings. If anything, it will provide an easy way to save bandwidth and CPU time.

Seems like Big G updates its browser of choice with fresh features every time we turn around, and one of Google’s own, dev advocate Paul Kinlan, revealed that another spate of upgrades are arriving for Chrome early next year. The headliner is plug-and-play support for gamepads, but native support for cameras, microphones and open-source video chat app WebRTC are on the docket too — features that give Chrome some considerable gaming chops when combined with its existing WebGL and HTML 5 prowess and, he says, could bring OnLive to the web without plugins. If you thought Angry Birds on a browser was a great, we can’t wait to see what’s in store when a proper controller and integrated video chat are involved.

Recently, Google has been busy beefing up Latitude to make it more competitive with other location apps — and more fun to use. Location history was added recently, iOS users can post check-ins via Latitude, and now Google has begun rolling out location-based deals which are tied to the service.

If you’re in the U.S., you can now score local savings at participating merchants by checking in with Latitude. Google will also be offering “status deals,” which users can unlock by visiting a particular merchant on a regular basis. Mashable notes three status levels: regular, VIP, and guru — though partners can apparently customize those titles if they choose.

Right now deals are available from merchants like American Eagle Outfitters, Arby’s, Finish Line, Macy’s, Quiznos, and RadioShack.
