GNOME 3 desktop manager

GNOME 3, after more than two years of development, has been released into the wild. GNOME 3 is not merely the logical successor of GNOME 2: it is an entirely new project, started from scratch, to create a “completely new, modern desktop designed for today’s users and technologies.”

The best way to check out GNOME 3′s new features — and it has lots of new features — is to run a live version of openSUSE or Fedora, or simply head over to the GNOME 3 website and watch the (rather pretty) introductory videos. If you want a synopsis, though, here it is: GNOME 3 looks a lot like Mac OS X, with a healthy dollop of iOSesqueness for good measure, but yet it still somehow retains an underlying feel of Linux.

The overall aesthetic is very simple, very elegant, and despite being slightly out of fashion, there are plenty of rounded corners, too. The main addition, workflow-wise, is the addition of an app-launcher-cum-alt-tab screen, where you can launch apps, or flip through your open windows. For a complete list of the new features and changes, check the GNOME 3 release notes.

Despite GNOME 3 being officially launched, there aren’t actually any releases for existing, stable Linux distros — it’s the live CD/USB images, or Ubuntu users will have to wait for the launch of 11.04 for a GNOME 3 PPA, but it will break Unity in the process. Fedora users will have to wait for for the May 24 release of Fedora 15. Of course, if you’re feeling crazy, you can always build GNOME 3 from source.

GNOME 3 released, ushers in an interesting amalgam of iOS and OS X originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 06:40:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

How To Setup Contact Relationship in iOS 5 Using Siri

Siri Contact RelationshipBack in October, Scott Forstall the Senior Vice President iOS Software of Apple demoed the new Siri feature of iPhone 4S on stage. He told Siri to remind him to call his wife when he left work. You may wonder how Siri knows who his wife is.

In iOS 5, the contact profile comes with a new field named “Related People” for defining relationship. The mobile OS offers you two ways to configure the contact relationship, either manually or via Siri.

Define Contact Relationship Manually

To manually setup a contact relationship, open Contacts and select any of your contacts. Tap the “Edit” to go into the edit mode. Scroll down until you see an option named “Add Field”. Tap on it and iPhone will show you a list of fields for selection.

Contact Add FieldContact Related People Field

Scroll down and select “Related People”. You’ll be brought back to the edit screen and you’ll see a new field “mother” added. If you want to change the relationship, simply tap on the “mother” field and you’re provided with other relationships (e.g. father, parent, friend, partner, etc) to choose from. If you can’t find one that fits, simply tap “Add Custom Label” to define your own relationship.

Contact Relationship AddedContact Relationship Label

Once you confirm the relationship, tap the blue arrow and choose the contact to complete the configuration of relationship setting.

Define Contact Relationship using Siri

If you’re using iPhone 4S, there is an easier way to define the contact relationship. Just let Siri help you.

Tap and hold the home button to launch Siri. Tell Siri what contact relationship you want to set. For example, “XXX is my brother”. Siri automatically configures the relationship for you.

Siri Setup Contact Relationship

Actually you don’t have to setup the relationship one by one. Whenever Siri can’t sort out the relationship, it’ll ask you.

Call my sister siri

I Only Got 3 Types of Relationship?!

Sometime you may wonder why you only get three types of relationship label (Spouse,Manager,Assistant) to choose from. It is likely you’re using other means (e.g. Google or MS Exchange) to store your contact. You may need to move your contacts to the built-in contact list or iCloud in order to have the full list of relationship labels.

What do you think about this tip? Should you have any problem, leave us comment and we’ll try our best to help.

HTC EVO Design 4G and Hero S kernel source released

HTC Hero S and EVO Design

HTC has released the kernel source for the EVO Design 4G, and its US Cellular cousin, the HTC Hero S.  The specific version is 2.6.35 for Gingerbread, which is the current kernel running on the devices.  Having kernel source opens up some ridiculously cool mods and hacks, and the development community should have plenty of fun with this.  This means that we'll all be having fun shortly after.  If you're an interested developer, hit the link below and grab some code.

As the U.S. government continues to pound out proposals for getting its IT security ducks in a row, it appears it’s not the only party in Washington, D.C., to have a problem with network intrusion. IT systems belonging to the lobbying group the United States Chamber of Commerce were breached by hackers using servers located in China, according to a recent report.

Those perpetual rankers over at Nielsen unveiled their “Tops of 2011″ list this week, revealing the most popular brands and products across all manner of categories. There’s nothing particularly shocking over on the digital side of things — Google topped the list of Top US Web Brands, followed by Facebook. Perhaps a bit more surprisingly, Yahoo managed to hold its own in 2011, rounding out the top three. Over on the smartphone side, Apple came out on top with a 29 percent marketshare in data pulled from August to October 2011, followed by HTC. Despite a fairly tough year, RIM managed the number three spot. On the social side, Facebook scored number one, followed by Blogger and Twitter, while some site called “YouTube” was ranked number one in video. Check out the rest of the results in the source link below.

iPhone 5 Design Rumor: Aluminium Back Plate and Antenna System
The iPhone 5 rumoured to be released in the fall of 2012, almost the same time the 4S was released this year is probably the most anticipated iPhone version till date. iPhone 5The iPhone 5 rumoured to be released in the fall of 2012, almost the same time the 4S was released this year is probably the most anticipated iPhone version till date. And the highlight of the next iPhone is obviously its Design, which has caught the fantasy of iPhone enthusiasts all over the world. There has been a series of debates and discussions as to what the size of the iPhone 5 will be to what design changes are expected, besides the usual predictions regarding its features.

And the latest one to add to the already rumoured status is news from some ‘insider’ source that the next iPhone will have “rubber or plastic” material built into its case as a new take on the device’s bezel. This is again said to accompany a new aluminium back plate and new antenna system.

However, the irresistible rumours surrounding the upcoming iPhone 5 surely make you ponder at the span it has managed to survive. If you remember, it started sometime after the iPhone 4 was released and soon rumours about an impending iPhone 5 began doing the rounds. But what followed – Apple releasing iPhone 4S, left many on the lurch – surprised, dejected and blown away by its path-breaking feature like Siri.
Will the iPhone 5 come in the way of iTV launch?

The Apple iTV is supposed to debut in the 2nd or 3rd quarter of 2012 and analysts believe that going by Apple’s fabulous marketing strategy, they would not mess things up or diversify attention from each product at the same time. Therefore, it can be well adjudged that the iPhone 5 might make an early launch into the market, which can also be in tandem to its prior summer launches.

The Revelation…

BGR in its latest revelation about the most-awaited iPhone 5 has come out with some interesting facts and news.

“Apple is planning to use a rubber or plastic material — similar to the material used in the company’s bumper cases — that will be built into the new iPhone case. In all likelihood, this material will be used as a bezel surrounding the front edge of the phone (like the iPhone 3GS bezel) and it will serve two purposes:

First, it will join the glass iPhone face with a new aluminum back plate. It will also cover a redesigned antenna system that surrounds the device, allowing Apple to build the rear case out of aluminum without having to use a large plastic insert above the antennas as the company does on its iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G.

Earlier reports suggested that Apple’s next-generation iPhone will feature an aluminum case similar to the one found on the iPad 2, as well as a larger display around 4 inches”.

What are your comments about this new design revelation? Do you think these changes will add value to the iPhone 5? Share your thoughts.

MIPS NOVO7 mini review — the ‘first’ Ice Cream Sandwich tablet

But how far did you think $99 would get you?

Novo 7

Ice Cream Sandwich, and a 7-inch tablet — two things that (for me) that go great together.  We got our 7-inch Ainol NOVO7 tablet fresh off the boat, and we're having a look at "The first Android 4.0 tablet in the world."  We really don't expect much from these no-name tablets — especially one that retails at less than $100, but the intrigue of Ice Cream Sandwich running natively on one made it too hard to resist.

Hit the break, and let's have a look.

Huawei Ascend II now available from US Cellular, free after rebate

Huawei Ascend II

We heard last week that US Cellular would be carrying the Huawei Ascend II — a 3.5-inch candy bar style Android phone running Gingerbread — and today they have made it available at the low price of free on a new agreement and after rebates.  While the Ascend II isn't a powerhouse (it has a Qualcomm MSM7627 at 600MHz) it has specs that make it more than acceptable to most folks.  It's nice to see a more consumer-friendly company like US Cellular getting closer with Android, and it's clearly what a lot of people want.  If you're interested in grabbing one of these free Android phones, hit the link and have a look.

lightbulbBack at Google I/O in May, members of Google’s Android team unveiled a new initiative that’s going to extend the mobile OS beyond smartphones and tablets ? and take us one step closer to Back to the Future II. Dubbed Android@Home, the project aims to bake special hardware and software into a variety of gadgets, which will allow users to control these devices from their Android phones. Think alarm clocks that fade in with your favorite music, lighting systems that blink based on events in the game you’re playing, and more. Eventually the @Home project will include everything from home stereos to dishwashers, but the first planned device was something a bit more modest: the lightbulb. At the event, Google said that it had partnered with LightingScience to launch Android@Home LED lightbulbs by the end of 2011. I’ve been waiting patiently since then, scowling each time I had to get up out of bed to flick off one of my ‘dumb’ lightbulbs when I should have been able to simply tap a button on my phone. I may have even boasted to my iPhone-toting friends about my impending luminescence superiority.

The Galaxy Note, Samsung’s unconventional powerhouse, has managed to ship 1 million units in under two months. While eager US customers still wait for the 5.3-inch tabletphone hybrid to arrive on their shores, the Galaxy Note has apparently struck a chord in Europe and Asia. The number of units shipped is always more substantial than the number devices out there in end-users’ (preferably large) hands, but it bodes well for the device’s eventual reception in the US. Now, whether it will include an LTE radio, we’ll have to wait and see.

FCC to investigate Verizon's $2 convenience fee for payments

After yesterday’s news that Verizon would be charging a $2 fee for paying bills online and over the phone, the FCC has chimed in.

“On behalf of American consumers, we’re concerned about Verizon’s actions and are looking into the matter,” the statement said.

A lot of subscribers have spoken out against Verizon’s decision to institute this new convenience fee. It’ll be interesting to see what the FCC ultimately decides to do, and what if any effect that has on other networks like Sprint which don’t “surcharge” but do offer “discounts” for their preferred payment options. (Just goes to show how far smart PR and better marketing language can get carriers who aren’t Verizon…)

Ally’s most-used iPhone and iPad apps of 2011
Some of my most-used apps have managed to stay the same year after year, but app updates and new contenders are always finding their way onto my device….

Ally's most-used iPhone and iPad apps of 2011

Some of my most-used apps have managed to stay the same year after year, but app updates and new contenders are always finding their way onto my device. While there are tons of great apps in the App Store, these are the apps that currently earn a place on the homescreen of my iPhone or iPad, or even both.

BiteSMS

I can not even express how great of an app BiteSMS is. While iOS 5 made several much needed improvements to the messaging app, I still need my quick reply. I desperately miss this functionality on my iPhone 4S and can’t wait for a jailbreak for A5 devices to be released so I can have it back. Until then I’ll have to enjoy using it on my iPod touch.

SBSettings

SBSettings is by far one of the most useful jailbreak tweaks ever created. It’s made my list year after year ever since its conception. I realize how much I miss it every single time I have to launch the Settings app on my iPhone 4S just to change the brightness level on my phone or toggle off wi-fi. If you jailbreak and haven’t picked up SBSettings, what are you waiting for? It’s free.

Reeder

Reeder has been one of my all time favorite apps on both my iPhone and iPad. While apps like Flipboard are great for casual reading, Reeder allows me to read when I want without missing anything. I can set up options for how many days worth of content I want to see when I load it and know I’m still up to date. More importantly, Reeder is a surprisingly beautiful client for one that provides so much functionality. Often times you see a great UI go bad when too many options are added. Reeder is a shining example of an exception to this rule.

Google Currents

Google releases Currents, a user-friendly news reader

While Reeder is the app I’d turn to when I actually want to sit down and catch up on my news for the day, Currents is the app I turn to when I just want to view headlines or pick and choose what I want to read. It has one of the most beautiful interfaces I’ve ever seen in a news app and it really is a joy to browse through, especially from the iPad. I think Currents will give Flipboard a run for its money. I actually already prefer it due to blogs being able to customize how their content is presented.

1Password

1Password has a well-deserved spot on every single device or computer I own. Lets face its, most people are terrible at remembering passwords. We all know it isn’t safe to have the same password for everything but who can remember all those passwords? Enter 1Password. Not only does it remember all your passwords or generate impossible to guess random ones for you, it does it across all platforms seamlessly. I have 1Password installed on my iPhone, iPad 2, iPod touch, iMac, and MacBook Pro. Never again will I forget a password or have to worry about not having the one I need nearby. While you can purchase them separately for iPhone and iPad, I suggest picking up the Pro version to cover all your iOS devices. It’s currently on sale for the holidays for only $8.99, down from its normal price point of $14.99.

Zen Coding made quite a splash when we first covered it almost a year ago. For those who aren’t familiar, Zen is a fantastic form of shorthand for quickly hand-coding HTML. And today, a new version is out!

Here are some of the goodies version 0.7 brings to the party:

  • Text nodes: Writing something like a[href=/]{Click here} now works, and puts “Click here” within the link.
  • New actions added: Increment/decrement number under cursor, evaluate math expressions, and more.
  • Wrap with Abbreviation was upgraded.

There are several other improvements but they’re all rather technical. If you use Zen Coding (or are intrigued by the concept) go ahead and read the release notes for this new version.

Zen Coding has official implementations for a ton of editors, including TextMate, Apatana, Coda, E2, Komodo, Notepad++, PSPad, and more. It also has unofficial builds for Vim, UltraEdit, Visual Studio and more.

If you want to play with Zen Coding without installing it, you can use the online demo to see some of its magic in action.

iOS devices certainly aren’t lacking for gaming accessories, but we’re always willing to welcome a new contender. 60beat believes it’s got the ideal solution in the shape of this familiar-looking controller. It connects to an iPhone, iPad or iPod through the headphone jack and offers up some familiar gaming options in the shape of dual-analog sticks and digital inputs. Unfortunately, the controller’s been saddled with a $50 price tag and is only fully enabled with two games. More games are promised for next year, and here’s hoping they’ll include some big hitters. Anyone rolling in cash money can check out 60beat’s hard sell — and some unusual spa relaxation music — in its promo vid right after the break.

Samsung Epic 4G

If you have a Samsung Epic 4G and aren't overly happy with it being stock any more, you'll be pleased to know you can now add some new life to the device as it now has official support for CyanogenMod.

It has taken a lot of work from a lot of developers but Team EpicCM's github repositories have been merged into CyanogenMod's and those results are now available for download and installation. Keeping in mind, a few things are still broken here so you'll want to read over what works, what doesn't and what is being worked on before you dive right in.

If you're looking to get the full details, you can head on over to the CyanaogenMod forums and find everything you need to know about this release thus far — including how to install it, a list of current bugs and what all to expect moving forward.

On the plus side, your router’s mostly secure. Security researcher Stefan Viehbock has just discovered a major security hole which allowed him to use a brute force technique to access a WPS PIN-protected network in about two hours. According to Viehbock, a design flaw allows the WPS protocol’s 8-digit PIN security to fall dramatically as additional attempts are made. With each attempt, the router will send a message stating whether the first four digits are correct while the last digit of the key is used as a checksum and then given out by the router in negotiation. As a result, the 100,000,000 possibilities that the WPS should represent becomes roughly to 11,000.

The US-CERT has picked up on this and advised users to disable WPS on their routers. Viehbock, in turn, claims to have attempted to discuss the vulnerability with hardware vendors such as Buffalo, D-Link, Linksys, and Netgear, but says he has been roundly ignored and that no public acknowledgement of the issue has been released. As a possible final step, Viehbock has promised to release a brute force tool soon, thereby pushing the manufacturers to work to resolve the issue. In other news, that evil supercomputer from the movie War Games just got a few more digits of the nuclear launch codes — maybe one of Stefan’s pals can look into that one.

Researcher finds vulnerability in WPS protocol, looks for manufacturers to offer fix originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 28 Dec 2011 19:55:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

ChromeLite ASCII extension

Have you ever wondered what the Web was like before the Mosaic Web browser? If you were born in the last 20-odd years, or you only discovered your inner geek recently, did you miss out on monochrome monitors and the dial-up BBS era? Well, here’s your chance to get a sneak peek at history: grab the ChromeLite extension and marvel as the entire Web is transformed into ASCII characters.

Now, ChromeLite isn’t really all that functional. For the most part, it simply strips images and converts text into a monospaced terminal font. There are a few Easter eggs inserted — such as a fun message at the bottom of YouTube (image after the break) — and some fun ASCII art, but that’s about it. Rather oddly, most JavaScript continues to work — so you can still enjoy Google Instant Search!

ChromeLite was actually made by Google as an April Fools’ joke — and indeed, an annoying ‘you can uninstall this!’ message appears at the top of every page — but we’re kind of hoping that Google, or another developer, takes ChromeLite and turns it into a real ASCII browsing extension with configurable settings. If anything, it will provide an easy way to save bandwidth and CPU time.

In the age of hand-held devices, and of social media addictiveness, it comes as no surprise that these two trends have overlapped. Indeed social media applications on hand-held devices are one of the most used applications in their league. For the very same reason, all the social media applications have released their very own social media applications, but somehow, it’s the unofficial, third-party applications that get most of the attention due to their trend of being more intuitive, and more flamboyant than their official counter-parts.

For all the tweeps (i.e. twitter users for those who don’t know) out there, you might have noticed that a lot of people in your timeline make use of Instagram as a photo-sharing service, especially if there are a lot of iPhone users in your timeline, as Instagram is still an iPhone exclusive application.

Instagram for iPad

Red Foundry Inc. seem to have stumbled upon the secret of Instagram’s success, for they have developed a simply interfaced unofficial application designed to allow the browsing of uploaded photographs in an ever more beautiful way. The application itself is called InstaPad, and comes locked, and loaded with features that are bound to impress even the hardcore Instagram users.

Instapad Screenshot

While photosharing is an all over loved experience, it is in tablets (whose size is more suitable) where they are most loved. So what are we getting in the InstaPad iPad app? As mentioned above, the design is simple enough, yet beautiful in its very own right. The first thing that the user sees is the ever needed login screen. The user needs to login via a valid InstaPad login ID, which authenticates you, and finally gives full access to the application. When the user logs in, they can browse through a grid of popular pictures, set in a design that does not clutter. Below each picture are the poster’s name, the like option, and the comments option. Familiar features exist, like viewing of galleries that are posted by users that you follow on social networking sites, along with the ability to like, and comment on them. Tapping on your username, or any other username you get the full photo stream by that user, along with the same comment/like option. All-in-all this application provides all of the features that a user usually needs. By the end of a session with InstaPad, you certainly get the feeling that a lot of work has been put in to it. While this application is indeed good, perhaps what it lacks is a little better scrolling, which feels a bit off.

Download InstaPad on your iPad here.

How the iPad has changed the world
The iPad Has Both Changed and Revitalized Reading One area that iPad has made a large impact is reading. Sure the e-Book readers have also had an impact but not in the way that the iPad has. The iPad Has Both Changed and Revitalized Reading
One area that iPad has made a large impact is reading. Sure the e-Book readers have also had an impact but not in the way that the iPad has. The iPad has done this is by being a platform for brilliant app developers. The apps developed for the iPad have made reading on an electronic device fun.

People that, although desktop computer literate, had no idea what an RSS was for, now actually report enjoying “Flicking” through long articles with their iPad.

Those article snippets on a desktop computer, via an RSS feed, were just not as eye-catching or personal. The connection readers used to have with the Sunday newspaper in their hands is back. Perhaps back and improved would put it better. The iPad is more mobile and holds more information than the Sunday Times, yet still gives that personal “hold it in my hands” experience.

How the reading habits of iPad users will continue to change and evolve will be interesting to observe. It seems logical the amount of content explored online will soon start to increase exponentially. We already know the existence of the Internet has given those who care to explore a much-increased knowledge of the world around us. The iPad may have ratcheted this upward at an even faster rate. If so, it will be because reading has once again become enjoyable plus more mobile at the same time.

The iPad Has Changed Healthcare

The iPad has helped healthcare professionals save more lives. Previously when doctors and nurses made their morning rounds the information they had at hand, literally was on the chart. If the previous days’ lab reports were not on the chart, decisions were made on the information in hand.

With an iPad, the doctor can review patient’s charts before coming to bedside and call up missing data. This has allowed doctors to make more accurate, timely and effective medical treatment decisions. The iPad is saving lives and helping get patients well and back home faster, every day.

The iPad has also made collaborative real time review of patient imagery possible. Doctors may work amazingly long hours but they cannot be on the floor 24/7 forever. In critical situations now, using the iPad, doctors can review and collaborate with other doctors on life saving decisions at the same time from different locations. This essentially puts more doctors in the hospital on the patient’s team at critical moments.

Patient understanding of treatments they have had and those yet to come are explained using the iPad. This makes patient education more thorough and helps eliminate the fear of what lies ahead. The iPad is helping elderly patients eliminate errors and mistakes in the purchase of medications by allowing cross checking of medicine labels to patient records.

Educators Claim the iPad Revolutionizes Education

The amazing free TED app for iPad combines video presentations from hundreds of educators on many subjects. This app has been an instant hit with both students and educators. Other iPad apps provide a virtual and visual periodic table of chemicals. Students can also view chemical compounds and bonding using 360 degree rotating images. Even more apps provide interactive and collaborative study efforts between students and teachers. Teachers, parents and students now have instant and accurate information on the academic status and grades of all students. Even study and preparation for standardized testing such as ACT and SAT has been revolutionized by the iPad.

The iPad is Aiding Law Enforcement

Even police departments are finding new interactive and collaborative ways to use the iPad. GPS apps and instant sharing of details of crimes in progress are helping law enforcement keep our cities streets safer than ever. Apps with connection to paedophile databases are helping law enforcement protect our children too.

The iPad Has Changed Personal Productivity Forever

There are already books written about the impact the iPad has had on personal productivity. To Do apps, whiteboard apps and many more offer exciting ways to organize, prioritize and simplify daily tasks.

Personal Entertainment and Gaming

Certainly not as important to society as many other uses of the iPad are the impact on gaming and entertainment. With high quality graphics and the ability to watch movies while mobile entertainment and gaming is another example of the reach of the iPad.

The iPad is Changing the Art World

More and more traditional artists are using the iPad “Brushes” to capture images and thoughts graphically while out of the studio. From an early age students how have a wide range of graphic user interface tools to produce pictures and artwork unheard or unthought-of a few years ago. While some feel that GUI is out dated and beyond its prime, it is fitting that the original brainstorm idea Apple brought to society, that graphic user interface, continues to be a key aspect of how an Apple product, the iPad is changing our world.

The iPad has Changed the World of Business

There are many ways the iPad has change the business world forever. One valuable way is inventory control. The mobile, connect ability of the iPad allows reordering, FIFO and review of stock by sales personnel. All of these abilities mean a stronger more profitable bottom line for businesses.

Back in the main office secretarial duties and ability to locate information and files for management has made life much easier even as it increases expectations on what is possible.

Management has available real time checks on everything from stock levels to vehicle and shipment locations, personnel staffing and production or engineering project status. The possibilities are endless, increasing daily and limited only by the imagination.

Logitech iPad KeyboardIn the past, we’ve covered some really amazing iPad keyboard concepts and accessories including the TouchFire overlay and the clamshell case. Additionally, there are hundreds of Bluetooth keyboards which can be used with the iPad 2 but they suffer from a major limitation that they offer a cramped typing space often leading to typos and errors. Logitech, world’s leading manufacturer of keyboards and mouse is now offering a Fold-Up keyboard which claims to provide an unparalleled comfortable typing experience on the iPad 2.

As the name itself suggests, the Logitech Fold-Up keyboard  unfolds automatically when you tilt your iPad 2  in to an upright position. It’s remarkably compact and compliant with the iPad Smart Cover.

Logitech Fold-up Keyboard

The keyboard saves time and minimizes typos by providing shortcuts for the commands you use most often, such as copy, paste, undo and many more.

Logitech Keyboard Shortcut

To save space, it doesn’t offer dedicated Function keys. Instead, it uses a combination of Fn Key + numbers to do specific operations. Like most iPad accessories, it uses Bluetooth connectivity to interact with your iPad. It features a built-in battery which can be recharged over a USB connection.  Logitech claims that the battery in the fold-up keyboard lasts up to 500 hours of typing.

Once you’re done typing, simply push it back towards the iPad and it shuts itself down. I actively use the Apple wireless keyboard and based on what I’ve seen so far, the key size in the Logitech Fold-Up keyboard is almost similar. That’s a good thing – users typically don’t like to adjust to different sizes keys on multiple keyboards and it’s often a major deterrent in fast and accurate typing.

All in all, the Logitech Fold-Up keyboard is stylish, compact and provides a comfortable typing experience. However, it’s priced at a meaty $129.99 (or $117.95 via Amazon) and not everyone can afford to spend so much buying a keyboard. However, if you’ve been craving for a fold-up keyboard for your iPad 2, it’s probably the best accessory available in the market today!

2011 TiPb Readers Choice Awards

The TiPb Nation picks their favorite stories and new or majorly updated apps and accessories of 2011!

Your votes have been counted. The results have been tallied. This is it, TiPb Nation! These are your 2011 Readers Choice Award winners

iOS device of the year: iPhone 4S

By the narrowest of margins, the iPhone 4S edged out the iPad 2 as your favorite new iOS device of 2011.

I voted for the 4S since I still have not yet gotten an iPad or iPad 2 and still don’t really have a compelling reason to. iPhone 4S has a better camera for both photos and videos, and also has a retina display. I think if the next iPad has the same camera as the 4S and has a retina display, it will win for next – Brad Morris

iOS feature of the year: Siri

In another tight race, Siri won a hotly contested race against Notification Center. While some felt Siri’s iPhone 4S exclusivity should have excluded it from entry, multitasking, video recording, and other now widespread features all debuted as iPhone exclusives at some point.

I would have to say Siri and the iPhone 4S are the top inovation. They changed the way we interact with our devices – look at what Apple has gotten us to do, we are speaking of an application, Siri, like she is a person I am excited to see what this leads to! – Sarah

Epic fail of the year: Netflix meltdown

In our third hotly contested category, Netflix raising their rates, splitting their services, renaming one division Qwikster, changing their minds about renaming one division Qwikster, and overall plain batcrap craziness this year beat out the lack of iPhone redesign as the most epic fail of the year. Wow.

Netflix was definitely the fail of the year. I love my 4S and nothing about it has been a failure! Siri is great, and I actually like that they didn’t redesign (because with every redesign comes the need to buy and make new accessories). I’m loving the bigger capacity (64g for me!) and the faster processor. Yep, my vote goes to Netflix. What they did just reeks of bad customer service. We canceled instantly and still have not re-subscribed. Not sure if we will. I’m looking into other options. – A. R.

Arts & Entertainment app of the year: Instagram

Out of all the photography, video, and music apps this year, and after briefly falling behind Snapseed in the voting, you picked the smash hit, filter flying, social sharing photo app, Instagram, as your favorite. No wonder it has so many users.

[Instagram] is one of the reason I’m sticking to my iPhone rather than move back to BB. The social features is great, it integrate with the built in photo library and the best thing it’s free. – Dee

[Instagram] in and of itself is enough to make me want to switch from Android to iPhone. – Mary Beth

Productivity app of the year: iWork for iPhone

Top 5 apps for iOS 5 iPhones and iPads: iWork: Numbers, Pages, and Keynote with Documents in the Cloud

Even Instapaper 4′s makeover wasn’t even to hold Apple’s triple iPhone threat of Keynote, Numbers, and Pages, all newly ported to iPhone and amped up to support iCloud document sync.

I’ve been waiting [iWork for iPhone] this since before the iPad came out! iWork is my office program of choice on my Mac and I haven’t been a big fan of the conversions that happen in docs to go or quick office. Now I have numbers across all three of my devices…….finally! – JPwillis269

Social networking app of the year: Tweetbot

Tweetbot just barely managed to take the win from the controversial Twitter for iPhone redesign that we bloggers detested but you readers really seemed to like.

Nothing even comes close to Tweetbot! I even use it on my iPad, and I hate using iPhone apps on my iPad – Galley

Casual game of the year: Tiny Wings

There was nothing casual about Tiny Wings‘ win over Cut the Rope: Experiments — it barely outran daylight to claim this prize.

Tiny Wings is definitely an awesome game. I love the music and the simple controls. The graphics are beautiful, even when playing on the iPad in 2x mode. I especially like the achievements that are called objectives in the game. I’ve been playing it all weekend. – David Levine

Hardcore game of the year: Real Racing 2

Always one of the first apps to adapt to the latest Apple hardware, like iPad 2, and software, like AirPlay mirroring, Real Racing 2 crossed the finish-line ahead of even Infinity Blade II-level competition.

[Real Racing 2's] graphics are beautiful. The cars are authentic and behave the way one would if you were lucky enough to drive it on the real streets. The on line multiplayer feature allows you to “meet” those that you race with all over the world. And, if you get bored with on line racing, there are personal time trials to improve on, quick races with AI cars at three difficulty levels, and why not go back through the career mode again? I have personally spent around 1000 hours playing this game since purchasing! That is just play time alone! FireMint’s associated forum adds an entire broader dimension to this little addictive game and friendships have been forged! Lastly, FireMint is extremely “on top” of this game and receptive to feedback like none other I have ever experienced! If it is not clear yet, I Vote for RR2!!!!! – Denisethenurse1

Jailbreak app of the year: SBSettings for iOS 5

Barely a tap ahead of the equally convenient BiteSMS app for jailbreak, your favorite this year was the newly iOS 5 updated versions of… SBSettings!

Navigating through menus is insanely unnecessary and causes loss of data for apps that don’t support multitasking so you have the fun of starting all over. There is simply no reason for Apple to make using those features as tedious as they do. High on my list of long-standing disappointments and a main reason to JB for SBSettings. – Talkin73

iPhone case of the year: Otterbox Reflex

By only a few precious votes, the Otterbox Reflex case for iPhone claimed the prize over Lifeproof.

Well… I thought I lost my IPhone 4 3 months ago… Found it last night in the bed of of truck beside a small bag of soil that I’ve been carting around…. It has been through numerous rain storms and car washes. It was totally protected with the Otterbox and works perfectly!! Great Product!! – Kerri

iPad case of the year: DODOcase

Even the magnetism of Apple’s own SmartCover couldn’t stop the newly redesigned DODOcase from winning your favorite iPad protection prize this year.

DODOcase is more than just a case. It connects me to layers of artisanal tradition, brings the past into the present and honors generations of fine craftspeople. AND the company is small, local and green. AND the cases are gorgeous! – Corey

iPhone and iPad accessory of the year: Jawbone ERA

While the Wacom Bamboo Stylus took an early lead in our general accessory category, the power of the Jawbone ERA Bluetooth Headset ultimately could not be denied.

Zephyr, by jailbreak phenom chpwn, brings iPad-style multitasking gestures to the iPhone.

From swiping up to show the multitasking switcher or quickly swiping to a different app, Zephyr is all you need to quickly and easily control multitasking.

Zephyr registers bezel-to-screen swipes, which makes sense given the smaller surface area of the 3.5-inch iPhone vs. 9.7 inch iPad display. While only the 2 gestures listed above are currently supported, anyone already familiar with their iPad counterparts will realize the efficiency boost they can provide.

If you’re jailbroken, you can grab it now from Cydia for $2.99.

A few moments ago, version 2 of the Banshee music player for Linux was released, bringing with it a whole slew of new features, and the addition of an official — but alpha-quality — Windows build. The Mac OS X build of version 2 is due later today.

The most notable new feature is support for the Amazon MP3 store — you can buy and download music from within Banshee — but unfortunately it’s only available in the Linux build at the moment (OS X and Windows support are planned, however). There have also been some significant improvements to artist, album, and queue interactions — and yes, you can finally right click a track, album or artist and select ‘play after’ to insert it into the queue.

Beyond actual playback, the user interface has been tidied up — it now looks a whole lot smarter — and the Ubuntu One Music Store and SoundMenu extensions have been made official. For a complete list of changes, additions and bug fixes, check the change log.

When Windows support initially appeared in February, we found it rough around the edges and fraught with stability issues. With version 2, Banshee for Windows is still a bit unstable, but it’s shaping up to be a good alternative to Winamp, iTunes, or whatever other music library manager you use. It’s almost as attractive as its GNOMEish brother, too!

Andrew's most-used iPhone and iPad apps of 2011

My most-used apps of 2011 consist of some of Rene’s favorites, and for good reason. Like Rene and Leanna, I’d also prefer to list some of the great default apps included in iOS like Mail, Reminders, Safari Browser for iPhone and iPad etc., but that would just be boring. Instead, here’s a list of some of the most-used iPhone and iPad apps I spent the majority of my time with this year.

Reeder

Reeder for iPad

Reeder is how I consume my news day in, day out — it’s really as simple as that. It’s one of, if not the best news and RSS feed readers available for the iPhone and iPad (there is also a Mac version available in the Mac App Store). Reeder incorporates a stylistic ZEN-like design with multi-touch gestures making news consumption something I consider to be fun, when previously I used the default Google Reader webapp layout from the browser — and I think we all know what kind of experience that can be like. With Reeder, I can jump in and jump out and get the job done quickly and efficiently, while also having a fluid experience at the same time. I prefer the iPad app, but when I don’t have my iPad handy, the iPhone app is top-notch and has the same look and feel of its iPad counterpart. If you’re looking for a better way to consume news, look no further than Reeder for the iPhone and iPad.

Netflix

Netflix iPad app

Netflix has definitely been a lifesaver for me on more than one occasion. Whenever I’m out and about or just at home in bed dying of boredom, I whip out my iPad and jump into the Netflix app to watch my favorite TV shows, movies or documentaries. The great thing about Netflix is the content, in that it has the best-of-the-best content (at least in my opinion) and beats out competitors like Hulu with ease. They’ve recently updated the iPad app with a better layout, making it easier to navigate to your favorite content and start streaming away. Diving into what I love to watch and forgetting about my worries wouldn’t be possible in certain scenarios without Netflix on my iPad 2, and even when I forget to pack up my iPad with the rest of my gear, I always have access to the content they provide via my iPhone 4.

Tweetlogix for Twitter

Tweetlogix for Twitter

I know there are a number of really great Twitter apps out there, but my personal favorite is definitely Tweetlogix for the iPhone. Developed by Onloft Software, Tweetlogix is probably one of the fastest Twitter apps I’ve ever used, which is probably of the main reasons I ended up switching back to Tweetlogix from Echofon Pro in the middle of the year. I wouldn’t be able to say it’s a straight-split between the two, because Tweetlogix excels in too many places where other Twitter apps are simply lacking. You have the ability to adjust font size, view inline images in your stream, mute people you follow who you don’t want cluttering up your stream, and a whole lot more. And again, when I say this app is fast, I mean it’s really fast. Sending a tweet — even over 3G or edge — takes what seems like milliseconds. Just tap the ‘Tweet’ button and you won’t have to deal with the dreaded loading wheel ever again!

Navigon

Navigon GPS Mobile Navigation for iPhone

I’ve been using Navigon as my main GPS app all year, and then some. It’s one of the best GPS navigation apps available for the iPhone and can even run on the iPad 3G. Navigon provides quick access to Google search, subsequently making it a breeze to search for your desired location (restaurant, gym, grocery store, gas station, whatever) and it also offers in-app purchases for things like 3D terrain mapping in a panoramic view, live traffic and even police radar location information. I’m sure some of you have personal prefecences for other GPS apps, or maybe even prefer a standalone device, but for me, Navigon does the job perfectly.

Evernote

Evernote for iPad

Want to make sure you never forget anything? Enter Evernote, the best note-taking app available for the iPhone and iPad. Just snap a photo of whatever you need to remember, add a label, tag or just leave it blank, and you’re good to go. Evernote will sync that information across all your iOS devices (even your Mac!) making it easy to access no matter where you are or what you’re doing, and they update the app with added value and additional features on a regular basis. Although the layout has changed significantly over the past couple of years since its debut in the App Store, the basic concept remains the same. iChadman put together a great How To on getting things done using Evernote, and after going through some of the pro-tips in that post, it’s easy to see why Evernote is one of the best apps for getting things done (and remembering things, too!).

Best Buy outs the unannounced Motorola Droid 4 on its Reward Zone site

Motorola Droid 4 at Best Buy

Best Buy's stellar track record with Android images continues, with the Motorola Droid 4 making an appearance on the Best Buy Mobile Solutions Reward Zone section. That'd be the still-unannounced (and, hell, not even guaranteed to be released) Motorola Droid 4. That'd be the Droid 4 that looks like a Droid RAZR with a keyboard. Whoops.

We still don't know when Verizon's going to announce the Droid 4. One possibilty would be at CES in a couple weeks, which would make since because by all accounts the thing's ready to go, and Verizon and Motorola are known for making a splash in Vegas. On the other hand, Verizon's kind of in the doghouse over its LTE networkagain. So we also wouldn't be surprised to see launches delayed while that gets sorted out — again.

Early build of CyanogenMod’s ‘Trebuchet’ launcher available for Android 4.0.3 devices

Android Central Android Central

One of the most anticipated features of CyanogenMod 9 — the upcoming custom Android distribution based on Ice Cream Sandwich — is its new home screen launcher, dubbed "Trebuchet." Much like CM itself, Trebuchet expands upon what's offered in stock Android with a host of new settings and features, like the ability to customize the number of home screens, and kill the persistent search bar if you want. Now, thanks to the release of an initial alpha build, early adopters can test out Trebuchet before it's rolled out in CM9 next year.

The catch is that to install the Trebuchet alpha you'll need a rooted Android 4.0.3 device, along with some command line skills. Currently the GSM Nexus S is the only phone that has 4.0.3 officially, though other devices like the Galaxy Nexus can run 4.0.3 code built from the Android Open Source Project.

The current Trebuchet alpha includes just over half of the planned feature set — for example, extra functionality like infinite scrolling and transition effects have yet to be implemented. However, if you want a sneak peek at what's coming in CM9 in the months ahead, you can find out more over at the source link.

That phone on Big Red having problems with data? Apparently you’re not alone, as the carrier appears to be having issues again judging by the metric ton of emails we’ve gotten from you experiencing LTE, and in some cases EV-DO, blackouts across the country. Our Galaxy Nexus in New York is chugging along with 1xRTT while a Thunderbolt in Washington DC is doing just fine with EV-DO. We’ve just pinged Verizon and will update if we hear back.

Update: Verizon wrote in with the following statement:

We are investigating reports of some customers experiencing trouble accessing the 4GLTE network. The network itself continues to operate and all customers continue to be able to make calls, send text messages and utilize data services. 3G devices are operating normally.

Update 2: And it’s back. Both our our Droid RAZR and Rezound are getting LTE goodness here in chilly San Francisco.

World Backup Day 2011

Those benevolent armchair philanthropist Redditors are at it again! Four days ago a ‘self’ post extolling the potential virtues of a Backup Day exploded with 2500 upvotes and 1000 comments — and now World Backup Day 2011 is actually happening.

On March 31, as part of the global data-saving initiative, you are encouraged to back up all of your cherished photos and videos, and important documents. If you’ve ever had a hard disk fail, and not had a backup to fall back on, you’ll know that it’s a bit like losing a sizable fragment of your soul. If you’ve never backed up your important files — or if you only back up sporadically — do it on World Backup Day!

It’s not hard to back up your data, either. A 2TB drive costs only a fistful of dollars, and it takes just a few minutes to set SyncToy for Windows, or Time Machine for Mac, to mirror your data every night. If you prefer a cloud-based solution, there’s always SugarSync and Dropbox. Finally, don’t forget that Bundlelytic has a charity giveaway for three excellent data-backup-and-recovery tools — $160 of software for only $25, and 100% of the proceeds to go the Japanese Red Cross.

For even more backup options, for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, check our list of 13 great backup programs.

Facebook for iPad coming late January with Timeline feature

9to5 Mac has word that Facebook for iPad will be getting the new Timeline feature in late January.

Timeline was supposed to come to the iPad in December, but the release has been pushed back due to last minute bugs found during advanced testing. Facebook is now planning to launch the update between mid-January and late January.

Facebook recently updated their iPhone app to include the new Timeline profile layout, but the iPad app was noticeably lacking in that respect.

The Timeline feature is said to work very well on the iPad’s larger, multi-touch screen, and will be a “fusion of the web and iPhone/iPod touch version”. I’m personally looking forward to this, and it couldn’t come any quicker.

Screen Shot 2011-12-28 at 9.51.14 AMFor a young startup, sometimes you want any funding you can get. For an incubator program, sometimes any startup is what you’re looking for. Finding each other won’t necessarily make either one successful, but more pairings might help overall. Or so believes TechStars, which is launching what it intends to be the Common Application of the startup world. Called Accelerato.rs, the application is a standard online form that asks founders basic investor-type questions, and lets them write one version then send it to any of the dozen or so participating programs. Funded by the entrepreneurship-focused Kauffman Foundation and under development since earlier this year, Accelerato.rs also lets startups track their acceptance status for each of the programs that they apply to. “One of the big things that a lot of the accelerators are looking for are more applications,” TechStars cofounder David Cohen tells me. ” Y Combinator, Seedcamp, TechStars and some of the other big accelerators are getting thousands of applications but only accepting a few percentage points.”

Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 Released

jailbreakThe wait is over and I think it’s the best holiday gift for all iOS jailbreakers. The iPhone Dev team and Chronic Dev team have released the untethered jailbreak tool for iOS 5.0.1. The untethered jailbreak works for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G and iPad 1.

According to the release note from the dev team, here is what you need to know about the untethered jailbreak:

A few days ago, @pod2g gave the untether to both the iPhone devteam and the chronic devteam. We’ve put it into redsn0w 0.9.10 and PwnageTool, and the chronic devteam put it into a Cydia package (the same set of exploits is in all three).

Here are the basic steps for how to get it:

The untether is for iOS 5.0.1 on iPhone3GS, iPhone4, iPhone4-CDMA, iPad1, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G

If you have one of those devices and are not on 5.0.1 yet, update now! The SHSH window is still open for 5.0.1 If you unlock via ultrasn0w or gevey, make sure you only get to 5.0.1 via a custom IPSW! See the guides at places like iClarified.com if you don’t know how. Once you’re at 5.0.1, use the latest redsn0w 0.9.10 to both jailbreak and untether.

If you’re already at 5.0.1 with a tethered jailbreak, you have two choices: either run redsn0w 0.9.10 over your current jailbreak (deselect “Install Cydia” if you do that), or install the Cydia package prepared by the chronic devteam. The patches are the same regardless of which you choose.

Some of you are using a hybrid 5.0/5.0.1 configuration. If so, do not attempt to install this untether over that setup! You will most likely get into a reboot cycle. Do a sync and fresh restore to 5.0.1 then install the jailbreak + untether.

Where to Get the Redsn0w 0.9.10b1

The Redsn0w 0.9.10b1 is now available on both Mac and Windows:

What about iPhone 4S and iPad 2 User

If you own an iPhone 4S or iPad 2, you still need to wait a little bit longer before the team releases the untethered jailbreak tool for iOS 5.0.1. At the mean time, please be patient and don’t upgrade your device to newer version of iOS. Otherwise, you may lose the possibility of untethered jailbreak.

What if You’re Using Tether-Jailbroken Device

The Chronic Dev team has released a jailbreak app called Corona iOS 5.0.1 Untether for users who have already tether-jailbroken their iOS devices. You can use this jailbreak app to convert your tether-jailbroken device to untethered one. Just search “Corona Untether” in cydia and install the app.

If you have any questions about the untethered jailbreak, feel free to leave us comment.

Google Voice for iOS Updated with Multi-recipient Texting

Google always has its own way of bringing a smile on your face; and at a time when the world is celebrating Christmas and is all set tobring in the New Year, it offers iPhone users in the United States more reason to be happy. An update for the iPhone app for Google Voice has been announced.

The latest updated version of the app cited as 1.4.0.2372 brings in a lot of new features to the iPhone when used in the WiFi Google Voice service. And the most striking feature amongst all is the ability to send text to multiple recipients.

You can now access your Google Voice account right from your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch and even make calls with your Google Voice number. It not only allows you to make international calls at very low rates, but also lets you send free text messages to any US phone numbers. All you require to use this Google Voice app is a Google Voice account, where you can sign up for free at google.com/voice.

What’s new in the Updated Version

- Allows Multi-recipient texting, with contact autocomplete.
– Allows Sprint integration support, whereby sends all calls to the native dialer when the phone is integrated with Sprint
– Also allows Multi-line text entry field with character count.
– One-touch Copy/Paste in dialpad

Until now for over a month, Google Voice users on Android have been enjoying multi-recipient text messaging. However, Google has finally integrated this functionality with this new version 1.4.0.2372 for the iPhone.

Reports of bugs not too serious

Bug are quite normal to accompany any app updates and the ones that have been reported for the updated iPhone version of Google Voice do not usher the urgency to call for immediate fixes. One such is associated with Google Voice outgoing calls. Here you find that a recipient’s Caller ID will display the caller’s actual phone number rather than the assigned GV number as found in earlier versions. Also, there have been reports of Sprint subscribers facing trouble as they can no longer make international calls, connect domestic US calls and run voice dictation.

Google Voice for the iPhone is free and available in the iTunes App Store now. Have you downloaded the app yet? How has your experiences been. Do share with us here.

Logitech Fold-Up Keyboard Turns iPad 2 into Laptop

Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab now said to possibly get ‘Value Pack’ instead of Ice Cream Sandwich

Samsung Galaxy ICS

In the continuing story of "Nobody knows what the hell's going on with the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab," (see Part 1 and Part 2) a new report out of Korea suggests that the manufacturer's 2010 flagship devices may receive a "Value Pack" update instead of a full-fledged refresh to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The "Value Pack" — we'd expect a better name once all the translation and marketing is done — would bring some of the sex of ICS without the hastle of an actual OS update.

That's probably a good middle ground, if indeed it is the case. It's not going to silence those who won't settle for anything less than Android 4.0, of course. But for the vast majority out there (who likely wouldn't really notice the difference anyway), it's a compromise worth exploring.

We’ve seen odd and law-swerving vending machines before, but none as meanspirited as Kraft’s collaboration with Intel that only gives pudding samples to adults. The unimaginatively titled iSample denies the youthful its sweet nectar by taking a facial scan and determining dessert deservedness based on biometric data, like how far apart your facial features are. Part experiment, part publicity stunt, Intel is trying out technologies that could recommend products based on age. The company also claims it may retrofit the technology into existing machines to let companies study who’s buying its products; Kraft is clearly in it just to deny children some pudding. To see if you have spent enough time at the fountain of youth, head down to Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium or New York’s South Street Seaport, and take your place in the line of parents ordering one for their progeny. Check the promo video after the break to see the machine wiping disappointment all over the kids’ little faces.

Use Night Theme for Better Reading in The Dark on iPhone and iPad
Being an avid reader, I usually spend a couple of hours daily reading stuff using iBooks on my iPad. Reading in DarkBeing an avid reader, I usually spend a couple of hours daily reading stuff using iBooks on my iPad. However, I need to keep the room lights on in order to read comfortably without putting stress on my eyes and that inevitably disturbs my kids. Not anymore though – Apple recently released an update to iBooks which supports a night reading mode. Plus, I found another cool trick which helps improve the night reading experience on your iPad.

Night Reading Mode in iBooks

To be honest, I’m somewhat surprised that it took Apple so long to introduce the night reading mode in iBooks. I’ve tried the night reading mode and I must say it’s relaxing for my eyes to see darker colors instead of using the original light-page-color with the black text.

iBooks Night Theme

Additionally, the latest release of iBooks also introduces full-screen layout which lets you focus on the words without distraction. With all the new notifications introduced in iOS 5, the full-screen mode provides an escape to all the clutter and lets you focus on what you want to do – read without any disturbance. I also noticed a few new fonts including  Athelas, Charter, Iowa, and Seravek.

Use the Built-in Accessibility Feature

In fact, you’d be surprised to know that night-reading isn’t just limited to iBooks and you can enable it for any application that you want. Simply go to Settings -> General – Accessibility –> Triple-click Home and set it to “Toggle White on Black”. That’s it, the next time you open that app, it would show you an inverted color scheme, thereby making it easier to read the content in night or low-light condition.

Reading in Dark Accessibility

There’s a catch though – viewing images using the inverted color scheme isn’t something you’ll cherish. However, given that most iBooks have more text than images, it’s worth a compromise to be able to read in the dark.

Have you upgraded to the new iBooks or switch color schemes on other apps to be able to read in the dark? What do you think? Share your opinion by leaving a comment.

google talk guru answersBots — like the kind which automate IRC rooms and Google Wave — are a good thing to know about. There are plenty of useful bots worth knowing about, too, including the Google Talk Guru.

Just add guru@googlelabs.com to your GTalk buddies, and you can start firing off questions. Lifehacker suggests that the same types of queries supported by Google SMS will work, though we didn’t have any luck getting a response out of the Guru with phrases like “score detroit red wings” or “sushi R3N 1Y1.”

Still, Guru does answer a good variety of questions and it works right within your favorite IM app. It’s well worth adding to your friend list, especially for getting answers on the go on your mobile device of choice.

Right on cue, Google has launched in-app payment support for Android applications. Developer testing began last week, and now many popular apps — like the ones pictured above — can begin charging users for add-on functionality, content, or whatever the heck else they feel is worthy of additional bits of your pocket change. If you were wondering, Google will take the same 30% cut that Apple takes from in-app purchases.

At last we can buy individual issues in Comics with minimal fuss!

Firefox 4 racks up 25 million downloads in 3 days

If you’ve had your head under a rock for the last few days, here’s this week’s Firefox news in brief: Firefox 4 was finally released.

Yes, 13 months after the initial release of Firefox 3.7 alpha 1 and four more alpha builds, a renumbering to 4.0 and 12 beta releases, and finally a release candidate (or two), Firefox 4 has been released into the wild.

Just like every other Firefox release, initial reception for the new browser has been nothing short of insane. 7.1 million downloads were registered in the first 24 hours and the download rate continued to accelerate, clocking in more than 15 million downloads after two days. At the time of writing, three days in, Firefox 4 has been downloaded over 25 million times. In case you’re wondering, the United States accounts for 7 million of those downloads, just beating out Germany’s Firefox-downloads-per-capita.

But now that you’ve installed Firefox 4 (you have, right?), what do you do now? Well, obviously, in true Download Squad fashion, it’s time to tweak Firefox 4 using add-ons and about:config hacks!

First up is an add-on called Stratiform that lets you change every aspect of the Firefox 4 browser chrome — including the color of that orange button!

The developer known as Jaxbot is becoming quite familiar around these parts, who’s known for bringing instant app resuming and multitasking to Windows Phone — long before these features had gone mainstream. Now, he’s back at it with WindowBreak, a project that seeks to deliver an interop unlock tool that can be used on any Windows Phone. As you can see in the video after the break, his tool already works on Samsung phones, and now, Jaxbot needs the help of like-minded hackers to perform similar feats with HTC and Nokia handsets. If you’re willing to give ‘er a go during the holiday weekend, just check the source links below.

A few months of work by iOS hackers Grant Paul (aka chpwn), Steven Troughton-Smith and Ryan Petrich has culminated in the release of Spire, a new installer that will easily set up Siri on your jailbroken iOS 5 device. While Apple has kept its little helper exclusively constrained to the iPhone 4S, it now runs on iPads, iPhone 4, iPod touches and the iPhone 3GS, and while that’s been done before they claim the other new trick is that it’s legal, avoiding the copyright infringement inherent in previous hacks. When installed it will initiate a 100MB download of Siri directly from Apple so watch your bandwidth limits, and also be prepared to set up your own proxy server with donated info from an iPhone 4S to hold the line between Apple’s backend and yourself. It’s available on Cydia now so if you’ve been waiting for a way to get this feature for yourself it’s not far away, however Troughton-Smith tells 9to5 Mac that the next major step may not come until the iPhone 4S is jailbroken and they can avoid the proxy server issues altogether.

Spire installer brings Siri to any jailbroken iOS 5 device, legally — proxy still required originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 26 Dec 2011 22:03:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Youtube LogoThe built-in YouTube app on iPhone only allows user to view high quality video when you’re connected to Wi-Fi network. Once you switch to 3G data network, the YouTube app streams video in lower resolution that was designed for EDGE.

If you own a jailbroken iPhone, you may use My3G hack to stream HQ YouTube video over 3G network. However, there is an easier way to do so and it doesn’t require jailbreaking.

Abandon the Built-in YouTube App

What you need to do is simply point your mobile Safari to m.youtube.com. Yes, instead of using the built-in YouTube app, go directly to the mobile version of YouTube.

From there, you have complete control over the quality of video for streaming even you’re watching it over 3G. Just make the “HQ” button is enabled. The video will be delivered in higher quality.

HQ Youtube Video

Add YouTube Webapp to Home Screen

If you love the user experience, you can install the web app in your home screen. Simply follow the on-screen instruction to install the icon.

Apple has launched its 12 Days of Christmas app for the third year running. The app offers free content from iTunes for twelve days between December 26th and January 6th. Today you can access three live audio tracks and three live videos from Coldplay’s recent appearance at the iTunes Festival in London earlier this year.

Each day between now and January 6th, when you open the app, new content will be available for free. Last year this included music, movies, books and apps. It is offered by Apple as an introduction for new iOS users to get to know how iTunes works and also as a thank you for existing users too.

Apple’s 12 Days of Christmas is only available in Canada and most parts of Europe; strangely the United States is not part of the promotion. The app is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad.

Have an app you’d love to see featured on TiPb? Email us at iosapps@tipb.com, tell us about your app (include an iTunes link), and we’ll take a look.
