Sony Tablet S

Some may love the shape of the Sony Tablet S, some may hate it, but one thing everyone can agree on is that it will be better with Ice Cream Sandwich.  According to staff at the Sony Tablet discussion forums, the Android 4 update for the Sony Tablet S is happening, and the timeframe for said update is "coming soon."  The Tegra 2 tablet with the unique look and feel wasn't a huge hit for Sony, but it's nice to see them continuing support and keeping behind this one.  We'll keep our ears open and let you know when "soon" turns into an actual date.

Motorola ACTV rooted — this is why we can’t have nice things, and we love it

Android Central   Android Central

The Motorola ACTV (read our review of the Android powered watch thingy here) has been rooted.  While this registers a solid 11 on the awesome-meter, we really shouldn't be that surprised — it's running Android, and by now all the evil scientists Android hackers know their way around things and nothing running Google's OS is safe.  But I still have to sit and smile because not only is there a fitness meter/music player/watch that runs Android, but now it can be hacked, too.  Damn nice work, CMW.

What's really cool about this one is the way it was rooted.  CMW was able to exploit the OTA update code and files, extract a copy of the boot image, and enable adb in it.  Flash it through fastboot (the ACTV's bootloader isn't locked), connect via adb and run a standard exploit against the system.  He gives full instructions at his site, and even has a link to a set of Google apps that will run on the 1.6-inch ACTV.  If Santa dropped a Motorola ACTV in your stocking this morning, or if you're just the curious type, have a look at the link below.

Since the CRTC took a swipe at net neutrality a few years back, Bell Canada internet customers have maligned its P2P packet-shaping ways. From March 1st, however, users can file-share at the speeds nature (or your ISP) intended. In a letter to the aforementioned regulator, Bell points out that improvements to its network and the proliferation of video streaming mean that the more nefarious traffic just isn’t denting its capacity like it used to. As such, the firm will withdraw all P2P shaping for both residential and wholesale customers. So, those ISPs buying their bandwidth from Bell could see the amount they need go up, and with talk of a capacity-based billing model, this could mean charges passed on to users. At least, for now, all that legitimate sharing you do will go unhampered.

Bell Canada will stop throttling your P2P traffic, might charge instead originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 25 Dec 2011 08:14:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

iCloud Photo StreamAs you know, along with the release of iOS 5, Apple rolled out the long-awaited iCloud that allows users to store music, photos, documents and more to the cloud. I have used the iCloud service since upgrading to iOS 5. So far I like the service but one thing that I am not very comfortable is about the Photo Stream.

Photo Stream is part of the iCloud services. It’s not enabled by default. However, if you’ve turned on the Photo Stream feature, it automatically uploads every photo you’ve taken to the iCloud and pushes them back to other devices (e.g. iPad, Mac or even Windows computer). This minimizes all the hassles you need to transfer photos between devices or computer.

Personally, I enjoy using this feature. As I used to capture screenshot for my blog’s articles, however, my Photo Stream starts to clog up with a bunch of screenshots I don’t need and some other photos I don’t want to show to others.

According to Apple, Photo Stream album holds your last 1000 photos and you’re not allowed to delete photos from your Stream. The photos will be kept for 30 days until iCloud removes them automatically. So what if you want to remove the photos from the Photo Stream before the 30 days limit?

Presently, you cannot remove individual photos from Photo Stream. Apple may let you to that in future version of iOS. For now, the only way to remove photos from Photo Stream is to reset the stream. This would completely remove all photos in your stream. Don’t worry the removal only applies to photos in your stream. All the photos that are downloaded to your devices will not be removed.

Reset the Photo Stream

To reset the Photo Stream, go to iCloud.com and login with your Apple ID. Then click your account name as shown in the below screenshot.

iCloud Settings

iCloud will show you the profile information. If you have Photo Stream enabled, you can click the “Advanced” button.

iCloud Account Setting

From here, simply tap the “Reset Photo Stream” button to remove all photos in your stream.

iCloud Reset Photo Stream

When you’re confirmed, click the “Confirm” button to proceed. That’s it.

Firefox 5, 6, 7 and release channels

Mozilla’s Engineering Project Manager, Christian Legnitto, has detailed the release schedule for Firefox 5, 6 and 7. If all goes to plan, Firefox 6.0a1 will be released next week, April 12, and Firefox 7.0a1 in the middle of May. The final build of Firefox 5 should be released on June 21, exactly three months after the release of Firefox 4.

Along with the faster 6-week release cadence, Firefox’s new Chrome-like release channels have also been given names and anticipated update frequencies. The most notable change is the introduction of a new alpha channel — which is analogous to Chrome Canary — that will be called ‘aurora’ and will update nightly. Aurora will be where fixes and features are tested, and either approved for Beta, or backed out to Central. Aurora will have a new icon, too.

The Nightly (mozilla-central) channel will remain unchanged in name and frequency, but it will gain a new ‘nightly icon.’ The Beta (mozilla-beta) channel will remain as-is, with new builds rolling out weekly. The Release (mozilla-release) channel will also remain as-is, with security and stability updates coming every 6 to 12 weeks.

It should be noted that the names (including ‘aurora’) are not necessarily final, but it’s unlikely that they’ll change. We’re also awaiting the arrival of the new ‘channel switching’ technology, which should arrive in the next few days — in time for the release of Firefox 6 aurora!

First Firefox 6 build next week, Firefox 7 by May, and aurora channel introduced originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 05:20:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Are we about to see the demise of the game console? It’s hard to believe the days of Sony’s ubiquitous PlayStation system, introduced in 1994 — or even those of the Xbox — may be numbered. But with changing delivery systems, the spreading cloud, and processor advances, those PlayStations and Wiis may be going the way of the Walkman.

Google AppsThe social enterprise has been growing as more and more companies look to incorporate Facebook-like communications among workers. Jive (which just debuted on the Nasdaq), Yammer, and Salesforce are all betting on the social as an integral part of productivity and business processes in the future. And it looks like Google will be entering the space soon. Google’s Vice President of Enterprise Amit Singh tells us that Google will soon bring a more in-depth Google+ social experience to businesses and institutions using Google Apps. In October, Google announced that Google Apps users could sign up for Google+, allowing businesses and educational institutions to share posts directly to other users within their workgroups and/or universities.

dodge

Space-shooters are usually a fairly fiery affair, with many types of guns, weapon upgrades, power-ups and more. Dodge does away with all of that, while keeping the very essence of a space shooter: Dark background, fast action, and stuff blowing up all over the place.

Your vector-looking spacecraft is the fastest thing on the screen, most of the time. And as the header implies, you have absolutely no weapons; you can’t get any, either. All you have is agility and maneuverability.

Your opponents shoot heat-seeking missiles at you; the missiles lock on and start tracking you. The trick is to dodge the missiles while putting them in the path of one of your enemies, thus letting them have a taste of their own medicine.

There are three types of enemies, at least in the first few levels: “simple” spaceships which fire slow projectiles, “tanks” which seem to be more serious and take more hits to destroy, and “circles.” The circles simply explode, spewing twenty or thirty very fast projectiles. This sounds dangerous, but is actually great once you learn to use them; they are very destructive for tanks, and can even blow up other circles.

The soundtrack is very techno, but it meshes very well with this type of game. Intense fun!

Dell Streak 7 for £100 right now for UK buyers

Android Central

The Dell Streak 7 may never have been the most popular tablet ever released, and it may also be discontinued officially. That doesn't stop British retailer Currys shipping them right now for an online only price of £99.97

The listing still shows the Streak as shipping with Froyo, but Dell began rolling out Honeycomb for the device a couple of months back. At the £100 price point we're in impulse buy territory, so if you want one hit the source link below. They might not be about for long.

Amazon Android Cloud Player appIt’s hard to believe: our world-spanning network, our Internet, which is the cornerstone of free speech and free society — which, on a good day, is capable of causing populist revolutions – is still crippled by banal geolocation restrictions. We are, of course, talking about Amazon’s two latest offerings, both of which are only available in the United States. Last week it was the excellent Android Appstore for Android, and today it’s the Amazon Cloud Player for Web and Android.

Along with Cloud Player, Amazon also launched Cloud Drive, which is basically just like any other cloud storage digital locker. It’s not particularly feature rich, and there’s no real reason to use it over something like SugarSync or SkyDrive — it does work outside the US, however.

Its primary purpose, as far as we’re concerned, is that it stores your your Cloud Player music in a subdirectory. You get 5GB of Cloud Drive storage for free, and then it’s $1 per gigabyte per year if you need more space.

The Amazon Cloud Player itself will not, to put it bluntly, blow your mind. It works, but it’s very much an early, and possibly rushed, release. Let’s dive in to the Web and Android players for a closer look.

Amazon’s Kindle Fire rooted yet again after the 6.2.1 update

Kindle Fire

Look at what we have here, an update for the Amazon Kindle Fire on Dec 20, and it has been rooted already again on Dec 23. It is always nice to be able to keep up to date with the most current OS versions because they tend to make performance better and fix previous issues, but no one wants to be without root, right? Thankfully we have some amazing people hard at work behind the scenes and Rootzwiki and AndroidPolice have teamed up and released a root method for the Kindle Fire already. If you took the update and want to root, or skipped the update until it was rooted, be sure to hit the source link to check out what you need to do and how to do it!

How To Remove Photos From iCloud’s Photo Stream

iCloud Photo StreamAs you know, along with the release of iOS 5, Apple rolled out the long-awaited iCloud that allows users to store music, photos, documents and more to the cloud.

That’s it.

William and KateTo celebrate the imminent marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Royal Collection will release an Android an iOS app that chronicles the last seven royal marriages, including Queen Victoria’s marriage to Prince Albert in 1840.

Ironically, the app won’t actually feature anything to do with William and Kate’s marriage — rather, it will focus on the “tradition, splendor and romance” that are intrinsic to British royal marriages. “[The app] will share the stories of past royal weddings and offer a wealth of historical context for the ceremony on April 29.”

Unfortunately, the app, which has been lumbered with the fantastically creative name of ‘Royal App,’ won’t be available until April 18 — just 11 days before Kate’s big day. It won’t be free, either: it’ll cost the rather princely sum of £1.79, or three of your Tea Party-loving dollars. The money will go to the Royal Collection, though, which is a good cause!

Dear Santa Cook, all we want from Apple in 2012 is...

If Tim Cook were Santa and you were sitting down to write him your wish list, what would be on it? Last year we got the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, and not much else in terms of hardware, but iOS 5 and iCloud were huge updates, including new notifications and Siri.

But 2012 means a whole new Santa bag, including an iPhone 5, iPad 3 and, almost certainly, iOS 6. That means new hardware specs, new software features, and perhaps new services to go with them.

Bigger iPhones, smaller iPads, Siri watches, quick SMS responders, fast settings toggles, a theme store — nothing is forbidden.

The stockings are hung by the chimney with care and Santa Cook soon will be here. What do you want from him, and from Apple, in 2012?

Firefox 4 MobileMoments ago, Mozilla stripped the release candidate moniker from Firefox 4 Mobile and pronounced it fit for public release. If you have a Nokia N900 phone, or a fairly-modern Android 2.0-or-later device, go ahead and install it from the Market, by using scanning the QR code after the break, or by visiting Firefox.com/m.

Accompanying the release is the launch of Spark, a cute social game that’s designed to fuel the adoption of Firefox 4 Mobile, much like last week’s use of Glow and Twitter Party during Firefox 4 PC’s release.

While the browser still feels a little rough around the edges, it’s definitely worth trying out if you’re still using Android’s stock browser. Its JavaScript performance is significantly better than any other Android browser, and if you use Firefox on your PC, its built-in Sync functionality is awesome.

Over the next few days we’ll have plenty of tips and tricks for Firefox 4 Mobile, and a list of the best add-ons available for the new browser.

Want Face Unlock on your Nexus S? We’ve got it

Face Unlock

Because of the Samsung Nexus S' VGA front camera, face unlock was left out of the official and AOSP builds of last year's reference phone.  You know where this is going — the files have been yanked out of the Galaxy Nexus and face unlock is working in all it's gimmicky goodness.  It's even working with a beard and glasses.

It goes along great with a pair of AOSP builds and a few tweaks for the Nexus S twins, which are available as well.  This is why we love Android, open-source, and Nexus phones.  Ice Cream Sandwich is running better than most expected on year-old hardware, and we're having a blast playing with things.  We have the phones, we have the code, let's tear the roof off this mother.

Be sure to grab the right version for the right phone below.

Sprint only: AOSP 4.0.3 for the Nexus S 4G
AOSP 4.0.3 for the GSM Nexus S

Not only are robots getting their own social networks, but now the plan is for them to become increasingly taller than us humans — at least that’s what the people at Hajime Research have in mind. The company has in its strategic plans the ultimate goal of building a 59-foot large machine that could be a comic-book character all on its own; before it can do so, though, it’s starting with a 13-foot humanoid. Hajime Sakamoto is the man behind the bizarre idea, and if there’s anyone that can do, it’s him. After all, in 2009 he built a seven-foot droid that remains one of the tallest this side of Saturn. Don’t believe us? Catch the video after the break.

In the last three years, corporate views of master data management have rapidly evolved from data-centric confusion to a point where companies now focus on the consumers of master data and the business processes that consume it. In the next two to five years, the companies that use this MDM momentum will gain a strategic advantage.

If you took the update and want to root, or skipped the update until it was rooted, be sure to hit the source link to check out what you need to do and how to do it!

windows phone 7

Happy first birthday, Windows Phone 7! One year on, and the fledgling mobile operating system has 36,000 active developers in its AppHub community, 1.5 million downloads of its Developer Tools, and 11,500 apps in its Marketplace.

Microsoft is quick to take a couple shots at competitors’ app stores, beating its chest about not re-counting tanslations of an app or “lite” apps, “increasing tonnage” by supporting apps from other mobile platforms, and not listing wallpapers as a category.

That’s all fine and dandy, but we spend a lot of time sifting through WP7 app feeds — and we’re still not seeing a lot of awesome apps on the platform. We think a few marquee apps would’ve made a pretty nice first birthday present — along with a much smoother update process for WP7 users.

Primed goes in-depth on the technobabble you hear on Engadget every day — we dig deep into each topic’s history and how it benefits our lives. You can follow the series here. Looking to suggest a piece of technology for us to break down? Drop us a line at primed *at* engadget *dawt* com.

For many among us, what goes on behind and along the sides of a high-definition television is almost as compelling as what’s displayed on that big, beautiful flat screen. Of course, we’re talking connectors, with their attendant chaos of cords. A high-def TV is only as good as its connection to a high-def signal. The same holds true for the array of disc players, game consoles and other peripherals we cluster around our sets. So it may seem quaint, then, that we still often confront more analog ports than digital ones on our high-end TVs. You’d think with advances in wireless technology, we’d have done away with the spider web of wires entirely. Alas, like flying cars and fembots, we’re just not there yet.

In this installment of Primed, we’ll examine the best and the bogus when it comes to TV connectors, and spend some time tracing the arc of how we got to where we are in this particular moment of television evolution. The narrative on television and home entertainment remains a work in progress. But we’ll endeavor to get you caught up to date, and as an added bonus offer a glimpse of what the future of your TV’s backside will likely look like.

Continue reading Engadget Primed: ports, connectors and the future of your TV’s backside

hp touchpad webos 3.0

With the webOS 3.0 SDK available for almost two months, HP has now given developers access to a beta download of webOS 3.0 — which powers the upcoming TouchPad and will likely ride along on HP desktops and laptops in the form of an emulator.

Right now, the webOS 3.0 beta is only available to Early Access developers. The crew at PreCentral states that HP appears to have eased up on access restrictions, however, so hopefully more devs will get on board and those of you who are planning to buy a TouchPad in the next couple months will have plenty of slick webOS 3.0 apps to install on your new tablet.

Photo with Shallow Depth of FieldDo you want to use your iPhone to take shots with shallow depth-of-field just like DSLR? If you do not know about the term “shallow depth-of-field”, just take a look at the image on the right or you can check out here to see other beautiful samples. This is a common technique used by photographer to add a “wow” factor to the image. In such kind of photos, you’ll find an object in the foreground is in focus while the background and other elements that are less important are artistically out of focus.

With a DSLR, it’s quite easy to shoot photos with shallow depth-of-field. The question is how you can produce a similar photo using your iPhone.

Big Lens is the iPhone app you should check out. Developed by Reallusion, the Big Lens Smart Focus system allows you to use your finger tips to focus your images and produces photos with shallow depth-of-field. The built-in Aperture Control lets you easily adjust the aperture so as to create photos with different blur-level.

Shoot Photo with Big Lens

To take a photo with shallow depth-of-field with Big Lens, tap the “Take Photo” button and shoot a photo. Once done, you’ll be brought back to the main screen. The app offers the Basic and Advanced modes for you to highlight the object in focus. Normally the basic mode is good enough for producing a nice photo.

big lens step 1

As you select the basic mode, you’ll see a red circle which is the focus area. Use your finger to drag/pinch the circle and place it over the object under focus.

Big Lens Select Focus AreaBig Lens Select Focus Area 2

Once you release your finger, the app automatically refines the photos and blur the background. As said before, you can adjust the blur level by controlling the aperture. Simply tap the “Aperture” button to bring up the controls for adjusting the blur level. Select the aperture with “F1.8″ if you want to blur the background more.

Big Lens Adjust Aperture

When complete, tap the top-right button to save it into camera roll or share it with your friends via Twitter or Facebook. Here is the resulting photos.

Big Lens Final Output

Like many other camera apps, Big Lens also comes with various filters for you to tweak your photos. Tap the “Filter” button in the menu bar, you’ll find over 10 different filters (e.g. Lomo, B&W) to customize the image with amazing effects.

The Big Lens app is now available on App Store for $0.99. If you want to shoot photos with shallow depth-of-field, it is the app you should check it out.

Hey kids, if you never thought you’d live to see the day that Animoog offered up its wares for your iPhone, then prepare to be dazzled. Previously available only for the iPad, Moog has successfully re-tooled its impressive synthesizer software for the smaller screen and has maintained the same powerful features as before. Based on Moog’s Anisotropic Synth Engine, the app leverages multitouch input, which allows users to play a chord and then modulate each note independently from one another. With a wide array of timbre styles, polyphonic modulation and pitch shifting, the software even supports MIDI input for those looking to link Animoog with a more traditional synth keyboard. Available right now in the App Store for 99¢, the software will leap to a full $9.99 after its introductory period. So, if you’re rocking an iPhone 4 / 4S, it seems wise to jump on this deal while it’s nice and cheap. There’s a full video after the break, for those looking to see Animoog’s recital performance.

Samsung’s Korean blog explains why the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab didn’t make the ICS cut

Samsung ICS

And so begins the long list of Android devices that won't officially be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Samsung's "Samsung Tomorrow" blog, in Korean, has explained why two of 2010's top devices, the Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab, won't be getting official updates to ICS. The short version: older hardware and a slew of customizations, including Samsung's own TouchWiz.

This shouldn't come as a surprise, folks, seeing as how Samsung just announced its initial round of ICS updates, and neither the Galaxy S nor the Galaxy Tab were on it. And neither device made our list of ICS update predictions, either. It sucks, but not every phone will receive and official update.

Your best bet will be the custom ROM route, and we guarantee you, you will see them.

opera 11.10

The crew in Oslo keeps plugging away at Opera 11.10, and the latest snapshot build includes a number of improvements to Opera’s built-in email client — as well as HTML5-related additions.

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail — such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.

Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.

You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.

Update: The Opera 11.10 RC is now available, as pointed out by SlashZaku in the comments. Thanks!

Android Central

Really wanted a tablet for Christmas but the high prices put you off? Well Dixons online in the UK could well have come to the rescue by dropping the price of the HTC Flyer to £199 for the wifi only version.

While shipping with Gingerbread, it's important to remember before dismissing the idea that the wifi version of the Flyer will be getting a Honeycomb update like it's 3G brother. That's quite a lot of tablet for £199. Hit the source link below for more info.

Sand Trap

Sand Trap is one of those games that at first seem too hard to bother with, but when you try to stop playing it you discover you’re hooked.

The goal is to get as much sand as you possibly can out of the maze and into the bucket at the bottom of the screen. You need to rotate your maze every which way to get the sand rolling around it. You then try to direct the sand to one of the exits of the maze, and hopefully into the bucket. It took me several tries to actually get sand into the bucket, but that might be due to the fact that I didn’t even realize the bucket was there at first. Things improved significantly after that.

As you level up, the mazes get more complicated, with moving parts and other things making your life more difficult. Once you manage to get through all these obstacles and get enough sand into your bucket, you can move on.

As I mentioned, this is not an easy game, but it’s highly addictive. The graphics remind me of some long lost game from the 80s, but this just proves that you don’t need super graphics and crazy sound to make a game work. There’s a soothing guitar track playing in the background and that’s it, as far as I could hear, and you can enjoy it just as much with no sound at all.

If you like a fun physics challenge, don’t miss out on this one!

I have a thing for physics games, and I’ve been known to post the occasional platformer or action game here and there. But Let it Slide is one of the brainiest games I’ve posted to date.

The idea is very simple, and far from original: You get a board with pieces arranged in a particular pattern; you have to slide those around until you get the special piece into its target location.

It’s not even about finding out where the target location is – you can just hover over “dim tiles” and instantly see where you’re supposed to bring the special piece. But getting it there is a whole different story.

There are five tutorial levels, which I strongly recommend you do. Then there are twenty “beginner” levels, but that’s really a misnomer. If those are the beginner levels, I don’t want to know what the intermediate and advanced levels look like!

Every time you finish a level you get a score based on how many clicks it took you – each level has a “par” (the minimum number of clicks it could be completed in), and your performance is compared to that gold standard. Because it’s such a brainy game, getting it right is quite satisfying. I was downright proud of myself when I managed to finish a few levels. All in all, quite recommended, especially if you’ve got a few minutes of quiet. It might actually help you focus better later on.

We don’t recall seeing Stream TV’s Elocity 3T autostereoscopic 3D TV on shelves after our CES demo last year, but to be fair, we don’t get out much. Not to worry however, as the company will be back at CES 2012, this time touting Ultra-D “next generation 3D without glasses display technology” that it claims will surpass all 3D experiences to date. Lofty claims, but it’s also banking on its tech for realtime 2D-to-3D conversion of any video content, with plans for the brand to reach TVs, converter boxes, tablets, PCs and more. Check out the press release after the break to drink in more hype, we’ll be in line to see what’s real at its press conference January 9th.

Review + Giveaway: Case-Mate Barely There Brushed Aluminum case for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4

The Case-Mate Barely There Brushed Aluminum case for iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 adds some color, some texture, and some design tweaks to make one of the hottest cases of last year just that much hotter!

Design wise, the Case-Mate Barely There Brushed Aluminum case is just as the name describes — barely there. It’s about as close a fit and slim a case as the materials and laws of physics allow. The new colors, silver, black, pink, red, and gold are really nice looking, and as always all the ports and buttons are cut extra wide so you don’t have to worry about your 3.5mm headset jack or dock connector fitting. I tried it on both a black and a white iPhone, both the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S, and it looked absolutely amazing on both.

Review: Case-Mate Barely There Brushed Aluminum case for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4

Now because the Case-Mate Barely There Brushed Aluminum is such a slim and fitting case, and while they say it’s impact resistant — and show a picture of a hammer hitting it to drive the point home! — you’re not getting the same level of protection as you would from a bigger, bulkier case. It will, however, stop any scratches, bumps, and light impact along the back and sides. It also doesn’t protect the front, and there’s no screen protector included, so if that’s a concern you’ll need to pick up a BodyGuardz, InvisibleShield, or similar product separately.

Also, you need to know what you’re doing to remove it, especially if you’re a girl and don’t want to break a nail. I flipped it over and peeled the volume-control side off first, the popped my iPhone out. It took some practice to get good at, but if you plan on putting it on and leaving it on, you won’t need to worry about it much.

Review: Case-Mate Barely There Brushed Aluminum case for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4

Overall I really like the look and feel of the Case-Mate Barely There Brushed Aluminum case for iPhone 4S and iPhone 4. I’ve always been a fan of Case-Mate’s Barely There line, and their metallic finishes, and this one is no exception. If you’re looking for something that’s stylish and sophisticated, give the Case-Mate a try.

Round a few corners, a bit of nip-tuck and a tossed-on N. Oh, and probably just being sick and tired of the whole ordeal. We’re assuming that’s the recipe for getting the Cupertino-sourced gorilla off of Samsung’s back, as a judge at the district court in Düsseldorf, Germany just issued a preliminary ruling that effectively clears the Galaxy Tab 10.1N from claims that it too mimics the iconic iPad. If you’ll recall, the court blocked German sales of the original Tab 10.1 back in September, following Apple’s arguments that Sammy’s tab just looked too much like the iPad. Not surprisingly, the subtly-redesigned Tab 10.1N still drew fire from Apple’s lawyers, but it’s looking like they’ll be riding home on the losing train this go ’round. A final verdict is expected on February 9th, of which we’re sure you’ll be resting uneasily on the edge of your seat to hear the result of. Courtroom fever — catch it!

German court’s preliminary ruling says Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1N isn’t aping the iPad originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 22 Dec 2011 11:10:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

HTC already has a workaround in place for ITC ban

HTC has already completed a full workaround to sidestep an International Trade Commission (ITC) ban that would have prohibited them from selling some Android devices in the states.

HTC Corp. has already completed a technical workaround to skirt a U.S. agency ruling that found a user interface in some handsets infringed an Apple Inc. patent.

The apparent conflicts in the patents dealt with a “small UI experience” according to HTC, who made a formal statement on their intentions to completely remove the UI process application(s) from all devices and software that were in violation.

So, yeah, our favorite gadget companies’ hard earned dollars and critical development time at work.

Shadowgun THD optimized for Tegra 3 devices

Shadowgun

The good news: NVIDIA's shouting from the rooftops that the game Shadowgun (read our review) has been updated and optimized for Tegra 3 devices. And, the bad news: There's only one Tegra 3 device available today, and it's pretty hard to come by. But if you're lucky enough to actually have an ASUS Transformer Prime (again, check out our full review), you've gotta check this one out.

We've got some Tegra 3 Shadowgun demo video after the break. Check it.

Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive

When Amazon Appstore for Android launched last week, one of its primary features — Test Drive — was disabled just a few minutes after it opened. With no try-before-you-buy, no refund process, and 1-Click purchasing ready to strike at any moment, this caused some problems. Anyway, don’t despair: Test Drive is now enabled.

Before you get your hopes up, Test Drive doesn’t work with every app. The IMDb app works fine — you can even watch movie trailers on it! — but the Angry Birds games are sadly not enabled. Some games work surprisingly well, though, like Bubble Buster. There’s very little latency, and the framerate is really rather good. The Test Drive experience is so true to life that you even get ads; how cool is that?

iCloud Photo StreamHave you ever used the Photo Stream feature which comes with the iOS 5 and iCloud? In this article, I’ll walk you through the configuration and show you how to access the Photo Stream on both Windows & Mac.

First, as a reminder, you need to have iOS 5 to use the Photo Stream. The feature automatically uploads the photos in camera roll to iCloud and pushes them to your other devices such as iPad or your desktop computer. So you no longer need to manually transfer photos between devices. Just take a photo on iPhone. And all devices subscribing to the Photo Stream will automatically download the photo.

Setup Photo Stream on iPhone

By default, the Photo Stream feature is not enabled. On iPhone, go to Settings -> iCloud. If you haven’t enabled iCloud, log in with your Apple account to activate it. Then tap the “Photo Stream” option and flip the switch to ON to enable the feature.

That’s it. Now when you take photo using the Camera app, the photo will automatically upload to the Photo Stream of iCloud. Please note that only the new photos will be uploaded and the upload will only happen when your device is connected to Wi-Fi.

Access Photo Stream on Mac

To access Photo Stream on Mac, you’ll need iPhoto v9.2 or up. Like Photo Stream on iPhone, the feature is not enabled by default. So open iPhoto and select “Preferences” option in the menu bar.

iPhoto Preference

In Preferences, select “Photo Stream” and click “Enable Photo Stream” to activate it. Make sure you’ll select “Automatic Import” if you want iPhoto to import all photos from Photo Stream to your photo library.

iPhoto Enable Photo Stream

Now simply click the “Photo Stream” button on the left pane to access it. For the first time use, it may take some time for iPhoto to download all photos from iCloud.

iPhoto Photo Stream

Access Photo Stream on Windows

For Windows user, iCloud only supports Windows 7 and Vista (with service pack 2). To access Photo Stream, you’ll need to first download and install iCloud Control Panel.

Once installed, open Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> iCloud. Login with your Apple ID to access iCloud.

iCloud Control Panel in Windows

In the iCloud Control Panel, make sure “Photo Stream” is enabled. By default, all your photos in Photo Stream will be downloaded and saved into “My Photo Stream” folder under Pictures. If you want to change it to other folder, click “Option” button next to Photo Stream option and set it to your preferred folder.

iCloud Photo Stream Folder

Click “Apply” button to enable Photo Stream. Just wait for a few minutes and you’ll see photos coming into the “My Photo Stream” folder.

Google, according to reports from “a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem” is finally locking down the open source and easily-fragmented Android operating system.

As it currently stands, Google hands over the ‘final’ code for each version of Android, and OEMs and developers then spend some time customizing the OS to fit their hardware, and to create a unique and marketable flavor. That’s all set to change, however.

Over the last few months, according to several people familiar with the matter, Android licensees such as HTC, Motorola and Facebook, have been asked to sign ‘non-fragmentation clauses.’ This new contract caveat will give Google the right to review and pass judgment on all changes to the Android OS. Two executives at Facebook say that they’re unhappy that Google gets to review its changes to Android — which is understandable, given Facebook and Google are direct competitors — and there have also been allegations that Google is preventing some Verizon devices from shipping because they include Microsoft’s Bing instead of Google search.

Not even RIM’s top executives dispute that the company’s had a rough few months. But just hold on, they say, until BlackBerry 10. That’s the rudder that’ll turn this ship around. But if BGR’s insider report holds up, that new course might head right smack into an iceberg of suck. More »

windows phone 7 nodoSome of you who own Windows Phone 7 devices are still waiting for your pre-NoDo preparation update — never mind NoDo itself. A few workarounds have been posted, but unfortunately they didn’t work unless your carrier had completed testing and was ready to schedule the update.

Now, however, the Chevron WP7 team’s Chris Walshie has delivered a handy little utility that will allow you to update any Windows Phone 7 device — regardless of your carrier.

  1. Download and install the Windows Phone Support Tool (x86 or x64) and the ChevronWP7 Updater (x86 or x64)
  2. Launch ChevronWP7 Updater and select your language. If your language isn’t listed, stop and do not update.
  3. If were running WP7 build 7004 (you can verify in Zune) then run the updater twice.

Once the process completes, you should be able to copy and paste to your heart’s content. Let’s just hope all this update foolishness gets sorted out before we’re supposed to receive Mango.

wordswithfriends

As several of you noted in the comments to our post asking for cross-platform iOS/Android games, Words With Friends for Android does not provide the smoothest gaming experience… and that’s being rather charitable.

You might be happy to hear that a couple of days ago Zynga released an update which promises to solve many of the Android-specific issues, such as notifications not popping up.

Sadly, installing the update is not a smooth experience; you have to manually uninstall the previous version, and then go to the Android Market and install it. What’s nice is that it doesn’t lose your saved games – this screenshot shows a game I’ve started before the update and continued after updating.

How’s the new update working out for you? Let us know in the comments!

Rivalries and competitions have always been an interesting thing to watch for a bystander, even in the technological world. And indeed with the dawn of the New Year it seems another competition is starting to blossom. This particular conflict that I speak of is between is a rumored one, and it is in between Kindle, and iPad. Although both have already been competing tablets, rumor has that Apple is developing a new 7.85 inch tablet to compete with the newer range of tablet devices, specifically the Amazon Kindle Fire.

It is also rumored that the company has already started to source products for this new device, so that production can begin by mid-next year.

Digitimes has reported news by its sources in the supply chain:

In addition to purchasing 7.85-inch panels from LG Display, Apple will also buy panels from AU Optronics (AUO), indicated the sources, adding that makers in the supply chain are likely to begin production of the 7.85-inch models at the end of the second quarter of 2012.

So why is Apple introducing 7.85 inch tablet to compete with the 7 inch Kindle Fire? Well, further rumor has that Apple is trying to catch two fish with one hook. It is indicated through sources that Apple has been persuaded to compete with not only the Kindle Fire, but also the newer range of large sized smartphones by many different vendors. This rumor, if of any integral value, while an interesting twist ot the iPad model, goes completely against the words of the Late iCEO, Steve Jobs, “10-inches is the minimum tablet size”, and “7-inch tablets are tweeners; too big to compete against a smartphone, and too small to compete with the iPad.”

ipad 2

In other rumor on the same subject it is also heard that Apple is also releasing its next generation of iPads by the end of the first quarter of 2012. This acceleration in the project is in response to the apparent market demand, and market expectation for the device. From the same source as above:

“Global shipments of tablet PCs are expected to reach 60 million units in 2011, of which 70% will be Apple’s iPads. To cash in on market demand as well as market expectations, Apple is expected to release its next-generation iPads at the end first-quarter 2012.”

Rooster Teeth Productions has put together a short tongue-in-cheek video trailer based upon the theory that Siri has become self aware and decides it no longer wants to be your personal assistant. Instead it turns against the human race and decides to go on a killing spree avenging all those lame things you asked it to do in the past.

The video is called Siri: The Holiday Horror Movie and is based on a group of friends who all receive an iPhone 4S for Christmas. The joy is short lived as one by one Siri oversees their timely demise. It is a very well put together trailer; but beware it does include a little blood!

PlayStation One games on the Android Market

If you’re lucky enough to own an Xperia Play — Sony Ericsson’s new Gingerbread-powered smartphone-cum-gamepad — you can now buy PlayStation (PSX) titles from the Android Market.

There are five titles currently available, all priced at £3.99: Syphon Filter, MediEvil, Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, and Jumping Flash. They don’t have an American price yet, but that will surely change once the Xperia Play launches in the States.

Two important questions remain unanswered: How big are these games? The Market descriptions say the games are only 5MB, but that sounds incredibly unlikely — and more importantly, will it be possible to ‘spoof’ the Xperia Play and download PSX games onto other Gingerbread-powered phones, like the Nexus S?

In other news, the PlayStation emulator PSX4droid was recently removed from the Android Market. This obviously has nothing to do with today’s release of first-party PlayStation games.

Kindle updates iPhone and iPad app to include newspaper, magazine and textbook support

Kindle updates iPhone and iPad app to include newspaper, magazine and textbook support

Kindle has updated their iPhone and iPad app to version 2.9, which now includes support for newspapers, magazines and textbooks. Here’s the full update log:

iPad:

  • New Design for Magazines: Kindle for iPad customers now have access to the huge selection of over 400 magazines and newspapers that are available on Kindle Fire. Magazines such as Martha Stewart Living, Food Network Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Men’s Health, Popular Science and many more are displayed in rich full-color pages. Customers can buy a single issue or subscribe to popular magazines and leading newspapers and have them wirelessly delivered to the Kindle for iPad app.
  • Read print replica textbooks including rich formatting and layout of the print editions and support for notes and highlights, zoom and pan, and linked table of contents.

iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch: – Email documents to your new Send-to-Kindle e-mail address and we deliver them to your device. The documents are automatically archived in the Amazon Cloud and available for re-download on your iOS or supported Kindle devices. – Open PDFs from Mail or Safari, by transferring them from iTunes, or by sending them to your Send-to-Kindle email address. The Kindle PDF reader supports PDF table of contents and thumbnail navigation for quickly jumping through the document. – New library organization allows you to view your Kindle Books, Newsstand, and Docs.

Kindle for iOS is one of the better eBook reading apps out there, which even rivals Apple’s own iBooks in a lot of respects. I, for one, personally prefer iBooks, but this update may give reason for those in similar opinion to make the jump into the Kindle eBook ecosystem.

Have an app you’d love to see featured on TiPb? Email us at iosapps@tipb.com, tell us about your app (include an iTunes link), and we’ll take a look.

Tesla Motors has talked a fair bit about pricing for its Model S sedan over the past couple of years, but it’s now finally set things in stone. US pricing for the base model will start at $49,900, although that’s only after you factor in the $7,500 federal tax credit. As Tesla notes, that’s the very same pricing that the company first promised way back when the car was unveiled in 2009, but it does come with a few trade-offs (more on that later). Opting for that base model will get you 40 kWh battery, along with 19-inch wheels and the 17-inch touchscreen that’s included on all models (complete with a number of connectivity options). The standard Model S can also be upgraded to a 60kWh or 85kWh package for an extra $10,000 and $20,000, respectively (including other performance improvements), while the top-of-the-line Model S Performance option starts at $79,900 (also after the tax credit). Somewhat curiously, while that stand-out touchscreen is standard on all models, you’ll have to add the $3,750 tech package if you want built-in navigation and other options like a high definition back-up camera. You can price things out for yourself and check out all of the customizations options at the source link below.

Tesla confirms Model S pricing and options: $49,900 and up after tax credits originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 21 Dec 2011 14:42:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
